According to rumours from The Malaysian Insider, Maxis will offer the iPhone 3G in Malaysia at a competitive price below RM1,000!!! [click here]

can it be true??? blink.gif

Sorry, I DON'T know, only Maxis can confirm that!!! BUT, one thing I am pretty sure is, Iphone 3g will be officially here in Malaysia, either from one of the tel operator, based on the "facts" below...

I found one quite "solid evidence" in the new iTunes 7.7.

user posted image

Do you notice that iTunes store is now officially offer to Malaysian?? rclxm9.gif

So, what to this meant?? rclxub.gif

Well, if you are an iTunes user for quite some time, you may notice that iTunes store was not opened for Malaysian to purchase any music or movies online, and Malaysia is not in the "MY STORE" list. Even with this 7.7 version, Malaysian is still unable to purchase music or movies through iTunes, BUT it now offers the App Store officially for us to purchase/download the new iphone 2.0 applications!!
Kindly note that there is only 62 countries are able to ACCESS this App Store at the moment!!! and Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan, China and Thailand, the few asian countries which "has been omitted" in the first 70 countries that Iphone 3G is going to launch, is in this App Store list!!

What is that meant, is it an accident??? NOT really!!! Kindly note that some of the so called first 70 countries to launch the Iphone 3g, like Macau and some African countries, are not in the App store list!!! and Brunei, our rich neighbor is NOT in there also!!! Thus, I dont think Apple jsut simply put Malaysia in this App store list for fun and without any purpose!!

Don't tell me, just because a lots of Malaysian is using the first generation iphone.... so, they put us in.. doh.gif
Then, why they don't just put all the countries in the world into the list? and just this 62?? What do they have in mind?? You get my point??

So, what I wanna say today is..... Iphone 3G, may be sooner than what we all expected, will be officially launched Malaysia, soon!!!

Kindly note that, China and Taiwan, which is not in the first 70 countries list, has announced that it will launch Iphone 3G in their country later this year...

Here is some of the free applications I downloaded from App Store!!!

So, prepare yourself!!!! Eventhough it is just my own GUESS!!!

No.

Unless you start seeing Apple providing other contents than Apps, that is not an indication of iPhone coming to Malaysia. Apple is merely providing avenues for iPod touch users here to get a chance to purchase Apps.

I'd like to be as excited and as hopeful as you are, but it does not point towards that way. And it has already been explained in other threads as well.

This move by Apple however, may be a test bed to see how well the response is from Malaysian towards AppStore. If they see that the response is encouraging, they may see it fit to launch a full-blown iTunes Store.

Meaning I don't have to spend crazy money (RM4.2K to be exact) to buy a un-warranty unit from someone here in LYP ?

I have a suggestion if says iPhone not officially launch in Malaysia and you still want the warranty.

Go to Singapore to get it, in case of any defect just back to Singapore and fix it.. biggrin.gif

Patience may not be a virtue at all if you're waiting for a train that never arrive at the station. People speak of the train, but all the while, the train goes past by this station and stops only in stations "down south".

We've all been here, and we all love speculations and hopeful rumors. But when you trust non-credible news source and accepts rumors as hard evidence, you'll end disappointed. The Malaysian Insider is good for a lot of other things, but there is a reason why people dont tune to them for technology-related info.

That is if Singtel allows sale of iPhone without contract, which remains to be seen.

Like you, me too would like to see iPhone to come to our shore - officially. But as stringfellow had mentioned earlier, the situations don't seem to point to that way. IMHO, before we could see an official launch here, we'll first need an official Apple store - which we currently don't.

The rules now have change, you may not need official iTunes store to ensure that your country gets picked up for an iPhone launch. All you need is a telco willing to bring it in, and agree to Apple's own business model. Countries like the ones on the African continent, still do not have their own iTunes store, but their telcos are handling the iPhone's unlocking to their telco's network.

Last time, you need an official iTunes Store to get this done. But now, with the arrival of a customised version of iTunes made available to telcos to do the unlocking, the rules have change. The problem here is, Apple only make that special unlocking iTunes version to telcos they have agreed upon, and I dont see Malaysia in that roadmap during Steve's Keynote at WWDC.

The recent localised iTunes Store move you see is to allow iPod touch users to expand on their Touches with the addition of Apps. If AppStore wasnt available for the folks with Touches, you'll never see this happens.

Next indication to look for are offerings OTHER THAN apps. As long as they stlll stick to Apps, I dont see pining for a local iPhone launch to be wise.

Hi stringfellow,

Thanks for pointing out the ipod touch issue!! However, kindly note that neither Hong Kong nor Singapore is offering any music or movies in their iTunes Store!!!

Another point is, iTunes is NOT a new features for Ipod Touch!!

IF Apple really wanna offer music and movies download for Ipod Touch users, they should already done so.... the only reason I can see why they are not offering is because.... they "DONT expect" many people is going to buy it in Malaysia??? isn't it?? How many ORIGINAL CD or DVD you bought compare to those pirated copies??

Anyway, I am not saying I am RIGHT, as I said, I am ONLY guessing....

Cheers.

Yes, all these are guessworks based on current Apple patterns. But the most indicative of a selection of a country as an iPhone launch platform is the inclusion of media downloads. you are right, HK or SG do not have media downloads available for them, on these countries, instead of media downloads, their respective telcos snapped up the rights and handle it as their own launch. Remember, HK and SG themselves do not have official Apple Stores, they rely on Three(HK) and Singtel(SG) to handle all the launch necessities(unlocking, support, etc).

Let's use common sense here. Why wouldnt Maxis, the supposedly telco that gets the rights for an iPhone here, kept mum/very quiet on the issue, and have Malaysian Insider break the news? Why didnt they themselves break the news and generate hype and wanting for their own brand? Why? Maybe it's because the news ITSELF has no credibility and Maxis doesnt want to be seen as an entity spreading FUD.

Trust me, I want it locally here as badly as the next guy here, but I set my foot in reality rather than floating on hope. It is better this way, you dont get hurt too much when reality sets in and you come tumbling back to Earth.

Apple announced 70 countries - "by the end of this year", even Singapore isnt getting the iPhone on the magical 11th, so, I'm pretty sure they already have their hands full now with 70 countries to launch in.

Besides, if either DiGi, Maxis, Celcom or any provider had a deal with Apple, I'm pretty sure they would be boasting it with advertisement now! Why wait?

Also, why would apple not show us that Malaysia is in the list of countries? They have no reason to do so.

One last thing, apple servers went down because of activation issues on the launching hours. Thats not even a simultaneous launch at all 70 countries. They seriously need to rework the activation load on the servers or acquire new ones to avoid such problems in the future.

So, I'd say its safe to say that we're not in the list of iPhone 3g countries, at least until next year, and when next year comes, the iPhone 3 g would be half a year old, with a newer revision coming out in less than half a year, and we'd be put in this limbo again.

there is a difference between iTunes Store and Apps Store, the store in Malaysia is Apps Store, not both iTunes Store + Apps Store, nation like Japan and US is iTunes Store and Apps Store, so they have both buying music/video and buying Apps

the Apps Store are made for both iPhone and iPod Touch, it doesnt have to be an iPhone to install the apps.

look carefully, there are apps for iPod Touch too, and also there are even more nation which does not officially have iPhone on the Apps Store list too: China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Taiwan, Thailand

having the Store doesnt mean anything in bringing in iPhone, it could be made just for iPod Touch

unless there is any thing solid (real news not just rumor) in iPhone officially getting into Malaysia border, there is not much thing happy about the Apps Store in Malaysia, look at the pricing, it still in US, just that it enable u to open an account using Malaysia credit card.

if Maxis does getting it in, it will be the greatest news for Malaysia iPhone user + awaiting user, i have also waiting for moment like this

just sit by and watch how Apple continue to revolutionize the phone industry, someday some telco will understand what market Apple has created brows.gif

Same here, I like the idea of having myself covered in case something broke down. Thankfully even my first launch iPhone still works, bought more than a year ago, so build quality is not an issue with the iPhone, at least not in my case.

But it is not wise to rely on hearsay and speculations.

Two options, O2 or Carphone Warehouse, and I'm pretty sure they are locked down pretty tight. So you'll need to wait for solutions from Dev Team orothers to get it unlocked, O2 or Carphone will not do the unlocking for you. From what I gather, only iPhones from Hong Kong, Italy and New Zealand are unlocked right out of the box, with options to unlock from telco itself, from Australian Optus, Spain, Portugal, France and Norway. If I could not get it from New Zealand, I'll be hoping on France(Orange) from my next trip there on the 22nd. My buddy just missed today's closing time at 1500 LMT(1100 here) and the Vodafone store is closed tomorrow. Only opens on Monday at 0900, and he have to get to the shuttle to the airport by 1050! I'm panicking already here! sweat.gif

Vodafone Italy is selling the 8GB version at EU499, while the 16GB runs you 569 Euros. I'm still looking around for TIM's rate. Two telcos offering iPhone 3G in Italy, Vodafone and TIM.

Hmm...from the market scenario, I doubt Maxis is going to launch iPhone 3G so soon, if they were really going to. If not, they would have very aggressive marketing campaign to promote the plan already, since iphone 3G fever is so hot right now. They could not be so silly to wait until the heat cool down then only promoting the plan right?

I mean, i dare not comment as well that definitely iPhone 3G will not be launch in Malaysia/Maxis...but at least, really don't think will be so soon, although how i wish the news from Malaysia Insider is true...I would switch to Maxis without any second thought! drool.gif

don't put so much hope without an official announcement. you might get disappointed of waiting. it's not about Maxis would like to offer or not, but will apple take up the deal as well. it seems apple isn't much interested with malaysia, if maxis has taken the opportunities at early stage, we should have seen malaysia on the iphone countries list, not until now where, it's abit too late for inclusion (when other countries have huh-ha of their iphone).

REason why Apple is not interested with Malaysia is that our telcos are an entity on its own. See other ccountries, for example Singtel. Singtel holds percentage interest and hold in companies with large customer bases in Australia and South East Asia, hence their ability to take up presence and charge to do the launch. It just also happen that they are from Singapore and hence passing that right and chance to fellow Singaporean.

What about those little African countries like Botswana and such, you ask? Check their telco, and you'll see that most if not all their telco are telecom multiconglomerate such as Vodafone and such, and since Apple have grant blanket rights to them to launch, Vodafone extends such rights also to launch in those little African countries. The same reason why in certain countries like in Italy, besides TIM, Vodafone Italy is also launching it there, because they are given the blanket rights.

Malaysia? Got Vodafone Malaysia? Orange Malaysia? Or T-Mobile? Nope, we have Maxis, Celcom and DiGi. The very extent of them allowing these large telecom multiconglomerates into Malaysia is via partnership, most evidently by business joint-ventures like Celcom-Vodafone Blackberry service for businesses. Other than that, Malaysia is LOCKED TIGHT, between the three main telcos here. Apple may or may not have negotiated with our Big Three but knowing how Malaysian companies operate (untung besar, on as little as possible investments or effort, eg: TMNET, Proton), Apple decides to not go through here, or probably disgusted/disenchanted with how things are done here. Why bother with such a small market and when the telcos representing us here are acting like hungry whiny babies, wanting to be fed?

There may be exceptions like Hong Kong's "Three" by Hutchison, but I see that as Apple's attempt to penetrate the Chinese market after their failed attempt with China Mobile. they may be sending a signal to Three to push their presence into China and allowing Apple to sell their iPhones there.

See, beneath this desperateness of getting the 3G iPhone, is a well-informed calculative mind. I may not seem rational in my obsessiveness in getting the 3G iPhone, but that is just my nature: I'll do whatever it takes to get one, within reasonable mean. But I draw the line when it comes to others taking advantage of my obsessions, such as local importers here wanting RM4,000 for the 3G iPhone. I seething hate cutthroats like these, no matter how business-minded they portray themselves to look like.

I've been lurking the iphone lounge for quite a bit this past weekend and this is the best reply I've come across. Period.

It's absolutely spot-on, especially the part on Malaysia's Big Three.

It's allegedly reported that the first delivery of RM4.2k 3G iphone has been sold out; and now Maxis rumours of being able to bring it in at RM1k.

Of course, it'd be great news to all if the rumours are substantiated in the near future. But I would recommend stringfellow's reply above as the Golden Rule of not being overly optimistic. tongue.gif

OT: I've tried Diamond, and the whole interface reeks! Those comfortable with multitouch would vomit in HTC's general direction, after seeing what pisspoor effort they did slapping a ho-hum interface on top of a crappy OS. No amount of eyecandy wiper wipe animation would make me fall for that.

maybe the HTC Diamond and alot of others are some sort of touch screen phone devices...but in term of smoothness, speed and especially the OS...APPLE IPHONE still the best and no competitors for this moment for sure...

jz wonder maybe the google ANDROID may take the crown in future...but still need to wait for its release... some said end of this year and some said maybe next year...

but for now...not following the trend or what...iphone is the best phone or computerized palm device for me... smile.gif

You're really brave for signing a contract, must be that you have someone in UK for extended period of time to do that. As for the Italian iPhones, be careful. Italians are adept at taking advantage of you while you're not looking, I got conned myself while in Rome. Got a 20 Euro souvenir picture that I dont really want.......long story.

Try and see if Carphone Warehouse gives a better deal. You should be OK if you sign up later in August, currently O2 is facing huge problem of activating the iPhones, thanks to iTunes 7.7 timing out. Some had to wait hours, and some are even sent home with iPhones unactivated.

OT: For those conned pics, what can I do? Those gladiators are holding swords. Even if they're fake, them gladiators are not messing around with bulging muscles....even the female ones. sweat.gif

speculation and allegations is only what we have right now. I don't mind that iphone 3g will be brought in by maxis to be true but I doubt the price is as low as 1k.. Because if maxis do so, it would be the cheapest iphone 3g as it termination fee is only like few hundred ringgit if were to follow the way to obtain the phone without contract. So, let say if maxis would ever bring iphone 3g in, price should be around rm2k and above. Hey, no harm for us to dream, after all, if its not true then just take it as a sweet dream and move on with life.

Besides, I would agree what string pointed out in iTunes as there are iPod touch that alot of people didn't thought of why the app store is available for malaysia. Don't forget that iPod touch is also entitled for 2.0 fw upgrade. since I am not too anticipated on iPhone 3g as the price is superbly high by those sellers, I guess I just stay put with iPhone 1st gen and wait for 2.0 unlock..

If I type something wrong please forgive me as I am using my iphone now while my of is reformatting...

30 quid monthly X 18 months + 99.

it is worthy esp. for the 35 per month deal if you are going to use the 600 mins and the exclusive unlimited wifi connectivity for iphone. if not, might as well get or wait for the pre-pay set set to be announced later of the year.

Actually DiGi had acquired the 3G license thru TIME (not sure which TIME) and in plans for a roll out within this year or next year. One thing that I'm not that thrill about DiGi is their coverage. Its not that 'extensive' as the other telcos. Sometime there's no signal in shopping complexes or in the elevator whereas other telcos signal are strong. Maybe its my phone or maybe not or just maybe they don't have enough yellow man to go around rolleyes.gif

If I'm not mistaken, DiGi has a foreign investor from one of the 3G iPhone launch countries. Not sure about whether is it the same carriers for the 3G iPhone. So if what some of the previous postings said are true, Maxis WILL not carry any of iPhone in Malaysia.

I just confirmed. DiGi.com has a foreign investor, Telenor of Norway. Norway has the iPhone launch on 11th July as well but too bad, the iPhone carrier in Norway is Net.Com.

I believe it will eventually reach Malaysian shore but the golden answer for WHEN, I don't think anyone know. Most likely by the time it officially available here in Malaysia, most people especially from LYN already got theirs from oversea. Cheers.

If I absolutely have to sign up for a contracted iPhone, two choices: Switzerland OR US. Swiss iPhones are the cheapest while on contract, while US, well.....spending considerable amount of time there helps justifying the contract.

14-07-2008: Maxis gets right to distribute iPhone 3G?
by Sharmila Ganapathy
Source: The Edge Ddaily.com

KUALA LUMPUR: The news is out - Maxis Communications Bhd is believed to be bringing in the second-generation iPhone to Malaysia for under RM1,000.

However, when contacted, Maxis “declined comment on speculation” that it will start offering the iPhone 3G at below RM1,000 to its 10 million customers in Malaysia soon.

It has been speculated in the industry for sometime now that Maxis has been bidding for the first rights from Apple Inc to bring the iPhone to Malaysia.

So it did not come as much of surprise when online newsportal Malaysian Insider reported that Maxis “will offer the iPhone 3G in Malaysia at a competitive price below RM1,000”.

When asked by The Edge Financial Daily in April if the telco planned to bring the iPhone here, Maxis chief executive officer Sandip Das had said Maxis had no plan at that time to bring in the phone as Apple had not decided on its Asian distribution policy.

The scenario has changed since then, as last month Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel) told Reuters that it would bring the iPhone 3G to Singapore later this year.

In May, it said its associates Bharti Airtel Ltd, Globe Telecom Inc and its Australian subsidiary Optus would bring the iPhone to India, Australia and the Philippines by year-end.

If the speculation proves true, Maxis’ timing couldn’t be more perfect. The telco, which already has a strong postpaid user base, will gain an even bigger edge over rivals Celcom (Malaysia) Bhd, DiGi.Com Bhd and newcomer U Mobile Sdn Bhd, especially if mobile number portability (MNP) takes off in August as planned. However, the implementation of MNP may be delayed.

With the telcos fighting tooth and nail to retain their customer base and win new ones, securing the rights to bring the elusive iPhone to local shores will be the perfect lure for mobile users to switch service providers. This is because MNP allows mobile users to retain their mobile phone numbers even when they move from one service provider to another.

The iPhone 3G models are third-generation (3G)-equipped and offer a host of new applications and smart phone-like features such as visual voicemail, global positioning system software to facilitate location-based services and push email, incidentally a signature feature of the Blackberry.

Incidentally, Maxis and Celcom are known for their Blackberry packages for postpaid users. If Maxis successfully introduces the iPhone on local shores, this would allow it access to a wider business user segment.

The new iPhone models began selling in the US market at US$199 (for a 8-gigabyte model) and US$299 (for a 16-gigabyte model) starting Friday. That’s roughly half the price of the original eight-gigabyte iPhone, which debuted in the US last June at US$600 (RM1,962).

The iPhone 3G went on sale in a total of 22 countries on Friday, including the US, Japan and Australia. According to foreign news reports said the iPhone would be sold in 70 countries by year-end.

Yeah...i think I am still going to sit and wait, until it is officially announce by Maxis spokesman, though I do hope it is not just speculation.

Another thing is...knowing Maxis, the price of below RM1000 is also another "speculation" that needs to be proven.

I'd jump ship, bye bye Celcom and hello Maxis in a heartbeat , if that is true.  Sell my soul to them for 24 months if needed to. laugh.gif

drool.gif I don't mind selling mine for 24 months as well...

If this is true...i think Maxis will really win over the battle among all the telcos...

I dont see it happening, in cash-strapped and thrift-based climate like Malaysia. Imagine the reaction of the general public when you tell them that on top of the "below RM1k" price, you need to subscribe RMXX per month for 12/18/24 months, and need payment upfront. More rioting and rallies, and cries for the iPhone to be a controlled-price item. laugh.gif

RM1k is indeed too cheap. But i expect them to tie you to, say, a 2-year contract AND may require you to pay the fees upfront. So technically the phone is still below RM1k but you'll need to pay a lump sum upfront.

If i'm not mistaken Maxis has already started this kinda promotion? Advanced 1000.... or something.... Can't remember =.="

I'm using the value 50 per month subscription.

Calls rates at 0.12 sen starting tomorrow as what the maxis customer helpline told me.

Use to be standard plan which is 30 sens peak and 15 sens off peak and monthly subscription of Rm 60 but got discounted on it which is Rm30. Recently just change to value 50 plan. Save on the Rm30 which i can use for my calls.

What about SMS rates?

Countries with plans and contracts have talk times, text and data rates separate. The cheapest plan would only include the cheapest talk times, plus bundled X amount of texting/SMS, usually in the figure or 200, or 500. Data is separate, and can be included if you're a user, but let's try and be cheap and see how much it crops up if you just want talk time and texting.

Sms is 5 sens as stated on their plan. Not sure how many smses they provide. Could be unlimited. Sorry sir, not very firm on this.

Also, they haven't updated their call charges yet on the value 50 as to12 sens(maxis to maxis) and 18 sens (maxis to other operator) but hopefully they will update by the next few days.

Here is the link for more info.

The problem with my logic is that I dont have sufficient data to use as an example. And i dont know which of the plans Maxis would use, or even if they would stick to the current plans. If you check all the other countries launches, they've built specific plans for the iPhone, which more often than not, is more than any of their currently most expensive plans. If that is the case, talk time cost for a 24 months contract would be RM12,000! rclxub.gif

Maxis have to somehow revamp the current tiered plans to reflect and achieve parity with other country rates and costs. Basically, this is an uncharted territory since we dont ever have a contracted period while with a telco around here. In other words, I dont even know where to start from here!

You guys take a gander, I dont know where to begin.

okay.. let say if maxis really bringing in the iphone 3g to malaysia, 1k would be the upfront, suspect that no contract termination is allowed (because the T&C stated that termination would need to pay the monthly subscription, access or other monthly fee for Services for the entire month in which the termination was effective) , and per month should be around RM250 plan for 12months or RM150 valueplan for 24mths?<--- ok ah my erm... assumption?

Hmmmm RM4,000 to RM4,600. That would put it roughly in line with the other worldwide plans. That would mean that if talk or SMS quota exceeds the limit, you'd be charge extra, right?

The only thing we need here is the word from the horse's mouth. tongue.gif

maybe smile.gif
becoz malaysia telco plan doesnt have free sms, unlimited data package or talktime like others telco in oversea, rather than the whole package at that price (eg RM250 plan) so exceeding will need to pay extra.

yeah.. now just wait for the horse's mouth after the flies has been flying around...

If there are any news source that can be trusted, it is from Apple themselves. Once you see it plastered across Apple.com, then that is the truth and not naysay, hearsay, or speculation. I can say I call DiGi and say their rep say they're getting it, who's to say I'm right or wrong?

The level of hopefulness here have cross the boundary of being realistic to being "I refuse your reality and subsitute it with my own". It will be Apple themselves announcing the next batch of countries approved for launch, not DiGi, Celcom or Maxis. That Maxis rep probably got tired of answering the same question since that news "speculation" (I wont call it article since there is ZERO credible source in that article), and just say yes to appease the "overhopefuls".

I say again, and I said this since the iPhone 2G already, I'll be more than happy to be proven wrong on this. No need clamoring for iPhones in foreign land and calling stores in the middle of the night. Stop the speculating!

Another fact that would make the difference in your total monthly bill would be the numbers of second per block that the telco used to calculate your total charge per call.

I was once a Maxis user, that time, Maxis charge on per 30s call, which means once you call or if your call was connected to voice mail, you will be charged the fee of 30s (if 1min is 30sen, 30s would be 15s).

I switched to Digi for 2 year already, initially their plan was 10sec or 15 sec block, couldn't remember clearly, now it is 20sec block. So 1 min is divided into 3 blocks. If 1 min is 13 sen (Digi has FLAT rate calling nationwide and all operator for postpaid plan), so if u just talk for 20sec or less, or connected to voice mail, you will be charged only around 4 sen. So on the surface value, it seems that all telcos are having almost the same rate, but in fact, when it comes to month end total bill, Digi proven to be cheaper.

When I was using Maxis, my monthly bill is around RM180-RM200. Now with Digi, my highest monthly bill is only RM130-RM140, my usage pattern is almost the same though... thumbup.gif So Digi Advertisement is true...Lower Bill Guaranteed!

Data plan is not a compulsory thing in our malaysia telcos plan...i think main thing will still be the call plan, maybe the telco would want their subscribers to commit to a higher amount of usage per month, and a certain numbers of lines subscribed in order to get just ONE iphone at special price.

Again...this is "speculation"..."speculation" and "speculation"...meant for discussion in forums only k... tongue.gif

but due to the nature of the iPhone (the internet in your pocket), most likely it will be paired with data plan. can't imagine how the bill will be when using the google map, not to mention Youtube, AppStore, Mail, etc etc...

even Rogers increased the bandwidth cap in favor of the release of iPhone 3G (myb la)....

Hey great news for us iPhone users in Malaysia. I just had lunch with a new found friend who works in Maxis internally, not going to go into much about his position etc for obvious reasons. He's my dad's friend la, yeah anyway..

He told me specifically that Maxis is in negotiations to bring the iPhone into Malaysia. Details are sketchy but he said that if it's going to happen, it's going to happen early next year.

There is a reason for this: In August, there will be a new ruling that will allow mobile phone users to switch carriers without changing their phone number. For example, you can change your carrier to Digi and contine to use your 012 number.

Obviously, as a result, it's going to be a free-for-all in the carrier wars as there is essentially nothing that's going to stop a subscriber from jumping ship to a rival telco. Whoever has the best rates wins.

The only way to defend against this is, yes, you guessed it, to commit subscribers to long term contracts. And here is juicy bit info #2: Telcos will eventually start offering free or subsidized phones as an incentive to tie consumers down to contracts. This means that the whole mobile phone ecomarket will start to resemble our Western counterparts where free/subsidized phones is the norm..

He said Maxis believes that the iPhone is going to be their trump card in the inevitable carrier wars. The other bonus is the huge profit margin that will be gained from the data plans as let's face it, iPhone users are going to gobble up bandwith like nobody's business.

Anyway, I'm just glad that there is actually some effort put in to bring the iPhone here..

Enjoy the good news guys, and here's to hoping... smile.gif

I just hope, Apple would look at Maxis's Data Plan, then scrap off their plan of distributing Iphones in malaysia just like they did with Rogers, only then will Maxis revamped their prices to suit everyone's financial status.

Chances of Apple caring how Maxis Data plans are is next to zero. We dont even have an actual Apple presence in Malaysia, only resellers. They probably dont even know or care about what's happening in these parts of the world.

Well, he said that they're in negotiations so there are obviously no definite rate plans/pricing of phone yet. Nobody would count their chickens that soon.

What is definite though is that the ruling this August/Sept is going to entirely change the way telcos conduct their businesses. I'm very much looking forward to this. I've been wanting to change to DIGI for the EDGE plan for my 1st Gen iPhone for ages but can't because a lot of my contacts have my current number.

And all this is a huge incentive for the Big 3 to fight to bring the iPhone in. Think about it, the windfall reaped will be tremendous...

Oh and he said Maxis is adopting a wait-and-see strategy to this whole thing after Aug/Sept so that's why it probably won't be in until next year or something like that. I can't remember because at this point I was still ecstatic at the words "Oh and we're going to bring the iPhone in as well.."

Nothing's set in stone yet of course but this is the best indicator of an official iPhone here in a long time so fingers crossed.. smile.gif

If that is the case, I hope Maxis(or whoever snagged this) can follow Australia's move on bringing out those with "parallel imported" iPhones to sign up with their plans at much discounted rates, while still using their own BYO iPhones. Penalising early adopters ,especially those who would be major contributors and users of your offered bandwidth/data plans would not be wise.

They dont make money from the hardware, but from the subscription plans.

Penalising early adopters ,especially those who would be major contributors and users of your offered bandwidth/data plans would not be wise.

They dont make money from the hardware, but from the subscription plans.
*
In fact, I would say that is THE strategy to adopt if they're wise. You don't have to pay the subsidy for the iPhone and can still have users on the same rate plan.

Win-Win situation, definitely..

from the looks, it is not a 3G iPhone. look at the plastic button, it's the first gen.
u can see it clearer on the online version of maxis rewards,
http://www.maxis.com.my/rewards/html/main.asp

but that's still not a solid proof for the claim. maybe they are just using stock photos for the brochure. not a solid indication.

I've seen Gelaskin adds and banners in LYP showing iPhones since God knows when. That banner is bigger, does that mean that it is a much more "solid" proof of it coming here?

It's sad really that we are hanging and believe every little scrap of info tossed at us, and build our hopes from there on believing something. There is something called "pipe dream" and its opposing brother, "reality". I like to be friends with "Pipe dream"'s brother, "Reality" more than "Pipe Dream", because "Reality" keeps my feet on the ground, not flying on baseless hope.

don't worry about the feel man. with tons of new people using iphone we can have pretty good community then. and again, if and only if they release it here.
the waiting game is still continue on.

@Esqandare

true. i used digi for almost 8 years now. i wish if digi take the risk bringing iphone to malaysia. the demand them self in malaysia is quite promising and with a good price i supposed.

Here's news from an insider, working midlevel in Maxis. My brother.

After the NST and television broadcasts onslaught of the coming of iPhone via Maxis, he went to get his facts straight, and came back with two interesting news:-

1. Maxis IS finalising the deal of bringing in the iPhones, the only thing is, if any of this is happening, it will not be soon. The oncoming Number Portability Scheme that is supposedly coming this November, MUST happen before you'll see any iPhones around. The reason why, is that with all the Big Three sharing their network into one, that would eliminated the issue of coverage, and the need to jump ship. IIANM, you can still keep whatever numbers you are using now, even if they are of different carriers, and still make use of Maxis's own data service, if you would like to.

2. They(Maxis) are trying to outsource sets from AT&T for their first launch. They are currently trying to figure out of the current 3G model have built-in carrier branding (APN stuck to AT&T only), or if those are editable and branding-free. This will likely come with the need for the addition of either a new lock to turn the AT&T iPhones into Maxis locked iPhones, or a universal unlock, if that is possible. Or they may scrap the entire stock from AT&T and get them someplace else.

It is close, and it is coming very soon, PROVIDED the Number Portability Scheme happens. That was what I was told. Take all this with huge grains of salt, I am not responsible for the spreading or legitimacy of this news.

What's most important is, we can finally get out own Malaysian iPhones, even if they are locked to a single carrier. Even when you think of it, it is not actually locked, when it comes to that Number Portability Scheme. With this happening, parallel import sets will be able to finally get some form of technical support, even if they have to pay for it, since it is bought outside local warranty coverage. All these things are the BIg IFs, so if you absolutely have to get excited, get excited cautiously.

Even if you're a Maxis user, and you're happy that your Maxis sim card can now be used with the iPhone, and if Maxis follows closely what AT&T is doing in regards to contracts and plans, you may be required to enter a term agreement to be binded for a set amount of months before they gave you the iPhone for use. At&T still have not released their no-commitment iPhones, that are supposedly sold on prepaid basis.

Which is why the Number Portability Scheme is important for this to happen. You can still on one carrier and maintain your numbers on the other. I'm not too sure how this will work with data, and in terms of coverage and speed, I'd rather stay with Celcom 3G. Imagine the already poor performance of Maxis' own 3G being bombarded with thousands of new 3G subscribers using their iPhones. The whole network could be congested to hell.

I wonder if the same mile-long lines and queues will occur in Malaysia should the iPhone show up here. I'd LOVE to see it first hand instead of online pictures smile.gif That's what gets Apple ALL the press coverage and attention they could dream of, without even breaking a drop of sweat.

I'm hoping that they do what NZ does. As far as I know, I think Maxis will offer the iPhone as a purchase option when you sign up with their plan for a set amount of years, say maybe 3 instead of the usual 1 year. They may mark up the rate but contracts costing an arm and a leg is not going to happen.

But NZ sets no need to signup for any plan. U can just buy them outright like stringfellow did. And as my logic tells me, Maxis won't adapt to the NZ style coz this would not benefit them at all and we don't have any law that prohibit 'locked' phones. If Maxis DO intent to bring in iPhones here, they would probably do it after MNP kicks off. About the arm and leg thing, i'm just joking but there are telcos out there that charge exorbitant contract fees for the iPhone 3G like Rogers (i think) in Canada and Vodafone (?) in NZ (correct me if i'm wrong). We never know.

Right now we can just speculate and hope.

I'm HOPING that they do like NZ, selling the iPhone as is. Probably going to cost RM2500-3000 for the 16GB. HOWEVER, Maxis may also offer RM1500-2000 IF you sign up with their plan that is probably at a higher rate or longer bindable period of 3 years or so, without termination clause (allowed in Malaysia, not in the USA).

The contract thing has nothing to do with NZ. Just my sentences seemed to relate to each other without the HOWEVER word. Apologies.

the subsidy they have to pay Apple for the iphone is quite a huge sum. if you see those maxis plan deal with nokia/se phones.. maybe cheaper by couple of hundreds but if u r talking about iphone .. the subsidy is about 1.5K because they say they are looking to bring in iphone for less than RM1000 which i see quite impossible. if the deal is so good, this will kill off nokia/se users and in long term will hurt themself.
if they say bring it in for 1.5K with plan .. then look reasonable but less than RM1000 almost impossible

it's just my 2cents ... .. what do you think?

But honestly, I seriously doubt the number of buyers will be a lot. In my opinion, there are many who wants to get the iphone, but will freak out when they look at the price tag. Imagine NZ, selling the 8GB iphone at NZD979, that is close to about RM2500 after conversion, which is the unlocked version.

With most Malaysians mentality, I'm sure that they would prefer to look to other alternatives, such as the Nokia N95 8GB, with better functions. Frankly speaking, based on my observation, although Malaysians are superficial, but only a few of them will be willing to fork out a large sum of money to purchase the iphone. And according to my observation here in NZ, usually those who bought the iphones are those who are avid Apple fans, lining up with MacBooks, MacBook Pros, Ipod Touches to accompany them, and those of my friends who bought the iphones are those who owns at least a MacBook or iMac. There are not as many Apple users or lovers in Malaysia yet and there are quite a lot of them who dislike Apple products.

That's just a thought I'd share, just my 2 cents.

I would be extremely disappointed if the iPhone does not reach the Malaysian soil, but will also be pissed if Maxis does charge a substantial amount just because they monopolize the iphone like Vodafone NZ

I don't know about her, but I did see that in some youtube clips, that the iphone 3G is relatively slower than the original iphone. But not lagging like shit la. But that wouldn't change my thought of getting one next month

I was in London in April for a week. I was sitting down reading one of their free newspaper and there was a full page advertisement from Carphone Warehouse selling their 8GB 1st generation Iphone for 169 pounds (it was about RM1000 plus at the exchange rate then). It was a 100 pounds discount from its original price at 269 pounds. I think then they were clearing out all their old stock of the first generation 8GB Iphone.

I put down the paper and walked around the corner and there it was, a Carphone Warehouse shop in front of me. I walked in with my friend who has a British VISA issued bank card. I bought the phone with his card, no questions asked. On my last day, I bought another Iphone with another friend's bank card. They require that you have a british issued bank card so that at least they know you're staying there and you're going to use the phone there. You're supposed to take the phone home and activate the O2 account. A few days after the sales started, all the phones were sold out in the whole of UK. I saw a lot of foreigners buying it.

I took it home to activate on Itunes alright... all the way back to Malaysia. I walked through customs and I said I didn't have anything to declare. They didn't stop me then as I was with a VIP. I unlocked it with Ziphone for free (some idiot at Digital Mall wanted to charge me RM300 to unlock it). I'm using one of the Iphone now and I gave another one to my fiance. She's not using it, she just keeps it in her drawer to show off to people, what a waste!

Anyway, I prefer buying the Iphone in countries that has the 3 pin adapter (like Singapore and UK). I've seen some of my friends buying the ones from the US with the 2 pin adapter with US voltage. You'll have to get another wall adapter to charge it.

I personally think the Iphone is never coming to Malaysia because the profit sharing model that Apple uses is not in any of the local telco's interest. I don't think they would want to share their revenues with Apple.

I'm still holding on to my first generation Iphone. The only advantage I see the 3G model has is faster internet and I prefer to use the wifi connection as its free. Just waiting for a windows pwnage version so I can move on to 2.0 firmware. I'm itching to test pwning my fiancee's phone to 2.0 to just see what it looks like. I hope it doesn't brick the phone!

QUOTE(stringfellow @ Jul 12 2008, 09:44 PM)
Try and see if Carphone Warehouse gives a better deal. You should be OK if you sign up later in August, currently O2 is facing huge problem of activating the iPhones, thanks to iTunes 7.7 timing out. Some had to wait hours, and some are even sent home with iPhones unactivated.

OT: For those conned pics, what can I do? Those gladiators are holding swords. Even if they're fake, them gladiators are not messing around with bulging muscles....even the female ones. sweat.gif

The main problem is, there is no Iphone authorized reseller or service center there. Unless you want to send back to overseas for warranty.

If you can't even decide your needs, why should you ask based on other people's need or choice. Just look at the product, read reviews, and see for yourself if you really need the new features and be using it or not. If not then just stick with the old ones.

If just keep on waiting and waiting, you ain't gonna get or buy anything as technology evolves pretty fast. Consumers buy based on their needs and use.

You'll end up like The Joker, forcing oneself to smile, when you actually dont want to. Same like forcing oneself to be "nice", when all you want to be is yourself.

End result? "Do you know how I get these scars?"

I'd agree on the practice of getting what you need at the point of time when you need it, rather than playing catch-up with technology. You may end up not getting anything at all.

as i mentioned earlier ... U-Mobile won't be bringing IPhone becuz they are new in the market and they are small time player in telco industry in m'sia and most likely even Apple wouldn't want to take the risk with new telco ..

Nah, bro.. never meant to flame. The thing is, you asked "Should I get iPhone 3G?" Someone said, "Wait, wait for third generation iPhone. I bet it'll be better than the iPhone 3G."

Then time passes by and here comes the third generation iPhone, you look at the phone and ask if you really want to buy it or wait. If you keep on waiting, then you'll never buy an iPhone. Nothing is perfect in this world, and also in the world of technology. You can't get all features into a phone, yes you can... look at Nokia N95, best in the field with the top-notch features but oh boy... battery life sucks and applications always hang. See what I mean?

You be the judge, it's your money. If you use 3G/GPS alot on the go, then go ahead and buy the iPhone 3G.

high chances its either celcom or maxis or both will be bringing in the iphone. that is, of course, if it's all true from what we heard on the radio, read from the newspaper, heard from our friends, colleagues, relatives and grandmas and all.

no way ... jose ... !!! i phone 3G in malaysia ... you must be "DREAMING"

with all the local telco in the market ... whom are only
aiming to squeeze $$$$ from the user ....

i really doubt that .. this item will be in malaysia .. !!

reason as follow ..

1) how good is OUR line signal for 3G data ... ( not talking of so many blind spot in town or outside town )

2) with this POOR signal ,,, you think the engineer of APPLE is going to give a "GREEN LIGHT" for approval
( whose reputation in more important .. apple , or maxis ( all our telco )

3) consumer behaviour...
How many of us would like to sign up for the unlimitted data usage with our telco .
( afterall this is the ONLY best Option to use this Iphone ..)

4) even our 3G video call is total failure ... that is to show that our consumer are NOT ready yet ..

5) and as for the account on itunes .. well .. so far it is only to attracted more on people using the i touch

this is my opinion

FYI iPhone 3G is launched in areas where 3G is not available/ or worst than Malaysia as well....

as for squeeze $$$$, it is a for profit business after all. You should look at other part of the world and see how it is even more expensive for mobile user, as compared to Malaysia. 3G video call had never been widely used all around the world, and that is one of the reason why iPhone 3G didn't include the Video call feature.

the answers,
1) in india, there's still no 3G connectivity. the bidding for 3G airwave will only commence next year. but they already got iPhone 3G.
2) even at&t in US got prob with 3G coverage. even got downtime.
3) no comment on that, but not a big issue.
4) no need to think about video call as iPhone 3G doesn't provide video call afterall.
5) it's a potential foundation for iPhone activation procedure. btw no comment on that.

still waiting for official release of iPhone in Malaysia although already purchased iPhones. currently discouraging friends and families from getting an iPhone as in the end i'll become their technical support. that's why i wait for the official release in Malaysia.

yea... actually i also thinking of waiting our local telco to launch..... but when look back to their previous so call "offer"..... means if sign contract can get the thing cheaper.... actually it does not cheaper but sometime more expensive than you buy a new one.... they actually just separate the actual price to their monthly payment like installment only. if then ..... why don't find a store which can provide 0 percent interest installment better? no need to control by the contract.

i went to PG maxis office on last friday at northam tower. had a fcuking shock of my life when the dude that work there told me that if im on non limited plan i get charged like Rm100 for 1mb of usage on the data. i wuz like wtf dude, u fcuking serious? u better double and triple check for me, it ain't fcung RM100 for 1mb.

true enuff, it wuzn't Rm100 but Rm10 for those on use-to-pay wutever crap.

neway, the bottomline is the provider themself r an ******* that they dun even damn understand bout 3g or the package that they r offering.

i already accidentally chcuked bout 10mb of usage on my normal line for my iphone. so that's like 100 bucks burn....

RM99 for unlimited then!

still RM99 is consider expensive for world standard but hey...we r in malaysia...weher every politiician associated company squeeze the living hell out of us.

i went to PG maxis office on last friday at northam tower. had a fcuking shock of my life when the dude that work there told me that if im on non limited plan i get charged like Rm100 for 1mb of usage on the data. i wuz like wtf dude, u fcuking serious? u better double and triple check for me, it ain't fcung RM100 for 1mb.

true enuff, it wuzn't Rm100 but Rm10 for those on use-to-pay wutever crap.

neway, the bottomline is the provider themself r an ******* that they dun even damn understand bout 3g or the package that they r offering.

i already accidentally chcuked bout 10mb of usage on my normal line for my iphone. so that's like 100 bucks burn....

RM99 for unlimited then!

still RM99 is consider expensive for world standard but hey...we r in malaysia...weher every politiician associated company squeeze the living hell out of us.

How I wish I can get RM99 or even NZD 99 for unlimited mobile broadband 3G

here u need to pay NZD60 for a 1GB package (the highest 3G data package).

Malaysia's internet is consider as very cheap dy, 2nd to Singapore

You are pretty right, Voda in NZ is sucking blood in NZ due to lack of competition. Well, at least here in Aus we have telstra, Optus, virgin and voda offer iphone so the price is not that bad compared to NZ. But honestly i regret of taking 500mb data plan coz i use less than that each month, only about 130mb, what a waste. Even 1GB is more than enough, unless u dun have pc or u always travel. Well, but looking at the good side, though it is unlimited 3G in malaysia but the signal and connection is not as good as it should be. tongue.gif

rm300 or rm3000???

soon is too universal.... prior to the the tread topic.... soon
just want to say this..... we may already have online apple store... hopefully we'll have our own apple store here in malaysia.... but even by then.... im so sceptic of iphone coming to malaysia.... but the case soon is too general.
so malaysian... go get ur iphone somewhere or be ready to be rip apart by the handphone sellers....
it aint coming SOON enough....

The puzzle pieces are falling into place.

I have stated before we needed a couple of conditions before we could ever see a locally launched iPhone in Malaysia.

1. Our own iTunes Music Store. Check! We have that since the launch of the Malaysian iPod Touch. Reason being, the iPhone needs the iTunes to connect online via the iTMS to verify the authenticity of your iPhone, and unlocks it for proper usage (not third part unlock/jailbroken).

2. Our own online Apple Store. Check! This just in a few days back. This is to facilitate the purchase of the iPhone itself, should the locally appointed telco could not cope with the demand. The Online Apple Store also can be used as proxy on behalf of Maxis/or whoever gets the iPhone contract here, to that when the unit itself in purchased via the online Apple Store, the activation process can be directed towards a Maxis-specific portal.

3. A local telco willing to bend over to Apple's whims. This remains to be seen, and remains to be seen if the general public here would respond well to contractual obligations (tied to a two year contract). We are only used to buying our phones and subscribing to plans that measures our talk/data usage AS WE USE THEM, not on a contract basis.

Point #3 is the last hurdle needed to be overcome before we see iPhone Malaysian edition.

@string,
Sorry OT,

How's the usage then? I tried the maxis unlimited data plan and the speed and coverage is seriously crap. Thought of changing to Celcom since MNP is around.

Thanks for your reply.

OT mode on.

@derlin,
Pretty good, especially around Klang Valley. I roam around KLCC, Kelana Jaya, PJ and the ultimate test, to me at least, is to get acceptable 3G coverage while I'm using it on the ERL train to KLIA. There are several blackout spots but it gets better after passing the Bandar Tasik Selatan station. Coming into Putrajaya, maximum speed, and KLIA, the whole airport is covered with excellent speed as well.

Celcom 3G so far ok
i using the same plan as string

the line speed some time fast some time slow
depend on area
n i found tat iPhone safari by time to time will stuck,
which mean it din load, till u have to restart the safari a few time only it start to load

and from a 3G area to another 3G area
i blame their DHCP not doing a good job assigning our line well
it stuck n take a while only u can continue load
to be honest
malaysia 3G service sux!
no matter what telco

but still i feel celcom better than maxis tongue.gif

@String and Coolerthings,

OT again!

Thanks for the reply. One last question, are u able to login to fring or any messenger using ur data plan (Not wifi)? I tried mine with a few areas (PJ area like SS2, SS16, Sunway area around pyramid, SS15, Kajang, Cheras, Damansara area, all these areas i can't logon at all, it gets timeout. Most of the time i'm on Edge rather than 3G..

Can ignore places like KLCC since bloody maxis tower is so near so surely those places sure can connect..

Note: Maxis Wireless Broadband has the same problem as well!

Salutes for your hasty reply! smile.gif

celcom internet-on-the-go is decent, i dare to say.

i use the xpax rm8 daily broadband once in a while when i need to use internet on the move.

speed et cetera is fine, except when it comes to loading a bulky site and gets idle perpetually.

Alrighty. I guess Maxis data coverage is really crappy compared to Celcom.

If possible, if anyone would be kind enough to test out connecting to MSN or any messenger running on ur Celcom data plan? (Edit: On your iPhone!)

Thanks for the feedback Stringfellow. Appreciate it!

Their service are better but coverage whats matter the most. I lost the signal even at the staircase of my apartment, what more to say at the basement. But like u said, comparing maxis to digi ... Digi is far better (been a maxis subscriber before).

I don't think Apple produce the first gen iphone anymore. It gotta be 3G or it won't even make it to Malaysia at all. Maybe the next revision.

they wont easily introduce 4 5 6
they just need to upgrade the bandwith

coz u tot cheap to develope 4 5 or 6 here?
even 3G also not widely use, how they dare to go further? try to make themselves go bankrupt?

just add more towers and increase bandwidth will do
now digi coming in with 3G
tat make them compete to try serve the consumer well

Of course i know its not cheap to deploy it here. But that would be the direction they are heading to, from the looks of it, since 3G are not widely use, i'm not suprised they would move forward to 4G straight.

Then again, its just speculations, so what do I know? Lolz..

like i said.. even 3G not widely use
what the point to move forward to use huge sum of money to get advance stuff
while most ppl here is not educated to fully use current technology, which is 3G =/

they already dump a big sum of money on 3G

Well, this we will never know, its purely up to our dearest gov to see whether they are willing to do something about it or not. Telcos only deploy while our gov still decides on the licensing and who to do what.

Hopefully we will see better broadband coverage and speed so we can stop cursing and enjoy the full benefit of "Broadband"!

Asia among world's highest broadband penetration
By Victoria Ho, ZDNet Asia
Friday, July 25, 2008 06:30 PM

South Korea and Hong Kong are two of the top three markets in the world with the highest household broadband penetration.

Korea topped the Gartner study with 93 percent penetration in 2007, with this figure expected to hit 97 percent in 2012.

Next on the list are the Netherlands and Hong Kong, trailing Korea with rates of 74 and 76 percent, respectively last year. Although the Netherlands had a lower score last year, it was placed above Hong Kong in the list because it is projected to surpass Hong Kong in 2012 by a slim margin at 82 percent--Gartner predicts Hong Kong to hit 81 percent in the year.
Highest household broadband penetration

1. South Korea
2. Netherlands
3. Hong Kong
4. Canada
5. United States
6. Japan
7. Switzerland
8. Singapore
9. United Kingdom
10. Taiwan

Notably, the three markets are expected to maintain their global lead in 2012. According to Gartner, this advantage is due to their dense populations contained in smaller areas, coupled with government-backed spending for broadband infrastructure.

Another Asian country, Singapore, was eighth on the list, with a dramatic jump of 75 percent in 2012, from 57 percent recorded last year. Its government has been actively-investing in connectivity projects, from its Wireless@SG Wi-Fi hotspot initiative to the larger, planned next-generation national broadband network.

While these markets are nearing saturation, the next wave of growth will come from the Asia-Pacific region's emerging markets--the region will contribute the greatest increase to consumer broadband penetration worldwide, at 59 million added seats, said Gartner in a statement.

This market accounts for more than a third of the five-year growth mapped in Gartner's study; China alone will supply 25 percent of the overall growth in consumer broadband connections.

The growing digital divide
However, Gartner notes that the overall growth trajectory will not place emerging markets on par with currently mature countries, with regard to Internet use. Users in heavily-penetrated markets are "already addicted to broadband", and service providers in these countries are focused on delivering newer applications and content to them, said Gartner.

On the other hand, providers in emerging markets will likely be more concerned with increasing subscriber numbers and delivering a more basic level of service.

"Not only will the digital divide continue between the emerging and mature markets, it will widen by 13 percentage points," said the company.

A recent Frost & Sullivan study said broadband growth in the region is driven by factors such as the increasing popularity of online applications like video-on-demand and video sharing, multi-player online games and social networking services.

The study also projected 31.5 percent growth for the region overall from 129.7 million subscribers last year, to 171 million next year.

Gartner said newer wireless technologies such as WiMax will help attract subscribers.

Overall worldwide consumer broadband seats are projected to grow from 323 million connections in 2007 to 499 million in 2012.

it's long story on how the telecommunication business works in malaysia. just google on how much apple expects (to steal) out of the from network providers globally.

so for the time being, just grow up and don't be a biatch and moan all day long. when the time is correct, iphone will arrive at our shores.

Added on November 14, 2008, 12:43 amof course having said that, IF the malaysian network provider go get their hands on the iphone contract, they will definitely charge a premium for it (to satisfy both economic monopoly principles and also royalty to apple).

by then, knowing the public, will proceed to complain (and subsequently open redundant threads) about the extortionate malaysian iphone prices.

i remembered on AppleByte section, previously people are skeptical for an Apple Online Store here. forumers said things like "too many fraud case on CC in malaysia", "apple dont even bther to open one here" etc etc etc.

and suddenly it just arrived.

so the moral of the story is, dont be 'too' skeptical on the issue. when it comes, eventually it will come, and if it wont, it wont.

i'm just here for reading more clues on the official iPhone arrival and wanna know the thoughts of people here (like the link on the apple malaysia site that got redirected to apple site, myb it's a hint). i didnt came here to be rickrolled (although i love running and jump onto the fence like on the video hehehe...).

yeah different people got different thoughts. but dont be too harsh.

please dont flame me. dont play the 'spot the noob' game.

You know where I stand on this, and I've even stated the conditions required for an official Malaysian launch of the iPhone. The stars are aligning themselves nicely for this, and the last piece of the puzzle is to have a telco bend over to Apple's will and agree to their distribution terms.

IMO, the only reason you see an Apple Online Store here, is because of the amazing response to the iPod Touch launch here. They launched the Malaysian iTunes here, evenif it only for apps. That alone generated a lot of support and interest, and they noticed. Then they expanded that support to the Apple Online Store, but having Singaporean Apple Online Store over us, NOT our own Malaysian version of that. The T&C reflects that. Better than nothing, I guess, rather than waiting for an actual Malaysian-based Apple Online Store.

IMO, the skeptics are right to a certain extent, and the optimists are also right. Apple chose the middle ground on this, but I am prepared to retract this statement when and if the day should come when I can drive downtown to a physical Apple-operated Apple Store in downtown KL. That would be day that my skepticism would be wiped away wholly, because that would the day I see Apple fully embracing us as a viable market for them.

to be honest i was one of them who said that there are too many cc frauds in msia and apple wont even bother to open an online shop in msia.. i was surpised and quite shocked that they did eventually opened an online store.... and its a good thing that it happened.. at least now i know that students in malaysia have the benefit of getting the educational discount.. big big plus there.. and i think its good that msians should be exposed to the mac os..

for all i can see, if windows 7 screws up again, mac osx is the operating system to go.. but however that will generate more attention to the mac osx and we mac users have to start worrying about viruses for the mac osx already.. that means the iphone may be vulnerable too..

yes you are right SuperG (but to an extend). surely we know that locked iphones are cheaper. however experience from the previous generation will tell us that artificially unlocked units will still possess disadvantages as compared to officially unlocked units.

when i was using maxis on my artificially unlocked first gen iphone (software unlocked), the rate of call failures/dropped calls/unsent text messages were so high that i almost gave up on iphone permanently. but when i migrated over to an officially unlocked unit from SingTel, (which i'm very glad i did) i have never experienced such unfortunate incidents anymore. now that's what i call a truly pleasant experience with my iphone!

not to mention, with the upcoming fw 2.2 coming along, i will be glad as hell to be able to click the "update" tab for my 3G without any sorts of hesitation! no more keeping my fingers cross that someone will be able to overcome the so called cheap-skate 3G individuals disabilities.

yes you right, the dev team did said if you want to unlock the iphone 3g,but you must not EVER upgrade to software 2.2 which got sum good goodies.

thts one of the disadvantage,my guess the best solution is just to wait for official launch (like tht's gonna happen soon, duh),

but having a unlocked iphone is better than not to have one, rite? hmm.gif

from my personal point of view, not upgrading to the latest fw is not the main concern, mine is actually those call failures/dropped calls/unsent text messages. i mean it's a phone afterall. imagine having the need to make an urgent phone call, and you are faced with all these travesties (i swear to God, that i feel like smashing my first generation iphone on the floor sometimes)

one other way to buy unlocked iphone 3g,if you have a friend or relatives in singapore, ask them to buy an iphone which bound to sum plan (but still it is unlocked bcos singapore doesn't allow locked phone) which around 308$ singapore dollar for 16gb version then pick the cheapest monthly plan for about 52$ then after a month, terminate your subscribed plan and you'l get a penalty of 800$ .aafter tht, your iphone 3g is free to use!(not to bound on any contract, unlocked)
if you do the calculations 308+52+800= 1160$ is only bout rm 2700 sumthing.thts alot cheap than the iphone 3g tht sell in malaysia,

no offense, but i reckon that almost all the regulars in this forum already know that, even from the day 1 when it was launched in singapore.

in fact, you don't even need the hassle of getting someone to sign up a contract from you; private sellers can sell you at a much cheaper price minus the hassle (and the warranty coverage is still applicable)

Hey...that's pretty cool nokia. That means you'll be the first one to inform us once the trademark is registered hehehe... and we'll be among the first to find out.

old news as well.

if they intend to bring in iphones into the country - before attempting to conduct a negotiation with apple, surely they have to try it out with the network first.

what's the point of negotiation if their own network cannot even support them?
