Nokia's finally fessing up to its latest E series QWERTY phone, but took this one in a seriously surprising direction... for Nokia, anyway: thin. The E71 is one of the thinnest phones we've ever seen exit the doors of the Finnish giant, at 10mm thick, but there's still plenty of room for everything you'd expect out of an E series phone like WiFi, HSDPA, A-GPS and even a 3.2 megapixel camera and a front facing camera for video chat -- the main place the E71 differs on specs from its new E66 sibling is the 2.36-inch QVGA screen, just a fraction of an inch smaller. The E71 even manages to squeeze in extra battery, with 20 days of standby, 10.5 hours of GSM talk or 4.5 hours of 3G talk. There's 110MB of built-in storage and a microSD slot if you grow out of that, and the same business / personal switcher of the E66. Folks accustomed to previous Nokia QWERTY phones in the form factor like the E62 will find the screen noticeably smaller, but with the same number of pixels and an incredibly pocketable form factor there's plenty to love about this new entry. Unfortunately, the $500-ish pricetag isn't quite alluring, and like the E66, Nokia doesn't have any carrier subsidies lined up just yet. The E71 should arrive in the States -- and yes, with full 3G US bands -- sometime Q3 of this year, and will be available in grey steel and white steel.

Neither phone is here yet. But if past experience is anything to go by, this E71 will sell as well as the previous E61/61i did, and of course, more than Blackberries in Malaysia.

Me, I'm waiting for the Blackberry Bold, but I'll probably get this too, to replace my E61i.

I just found that someone is selling the E71 from LYN. I just called him and he said it would be coming in 2-3 weeks time. He also said price could be as low as RM19++ to RM2+++. Not too sure on pricing yet. He is gonna let me know once it comes out.....

come bring this E71 already! its just pure awesome, haha. very very practical indeed. especially to write ad hoc emails or touch up documents. now with HSDPA support, i cant ask more! hehe.

Dont really like the menu icons in this phone, looks ugly... but i guess that problem can be solved by downloading a new theme or something...

with that said, i think this is the phone la... waiting for soooo long to get a new phone... was using Treo 650 before, then now rosoak already, so wanted to replace with another QWERTY phone... was considering Palm Centro or Treo 500, but the features are very basic... And now Nokia comes along with this, WiFi, HSPDA, 3.15mp camera (not great, but it will do)... this is 'the one' i think...

E71 = RM1777 avaxx set... in miri. Racun..

Hi all! Just got the e71 YESTERDAY for RM1900 Avaxx set at Alam Sentral. Well actually went there just to trade in my e51 with N82 coz e51's screen is sooooooo small. problem when watching movies. But e51's function was superb and suits my business needs. But when i examined the n82's keypad. don't suits my taste coz its too tiny for my thumb. Then, after hearing me complaining this and that about n82, the phone's sales men let out something in the box. He said just came in on Monday so you'll be the first one to see it. LO AND BEHOLD! the e71. I fell in love with it instantly, with nice screen, nice keypad and most important thing is that it has the more or less the same function with e90 or even n95 (minus the camera and the ngage that is). it has a-gps too by the way.

so trade in my e51 with e71 and without a doubt this is the best phone i ever own. the d-pad is amazing! you have to test it out to believe it....



p.s : thinking of selling my pdair leather case for e51 flip type and the holux gps m1200 in the garage sales thread....see you there.....

so have u tried using the agps yet. Mine take quite some time to lock in. In fact it cannot not lock on at all. Hv done all the setting right. But strange to say that when i paired it with my holux gps receiver. It lock on quite fast at about 10 secs.

where did u get it from?

this is normal for phone GPS or aGPS (which lock position faster with assist of GPRS to nokia server), i really do not trust GPSed phone... despite i hv great experience with 6110 navigator.. but the info and the details.. really uncomparable to my Garmin nuvi 200... it's cheap and super fast + easy to use, with plenty of info.

Amdx, thank god. I'm starting to think that my phone agps malfunction already. Is it possible that my agps broke coz i can't seem to get it to work. Probably coz i tried it indoor but again when pairing it with my gpas receiver it was ok even in indoor area (my room to be exact)

yea some lowyatians is selling the models for cheap price well u can get it original zitron for RM1780 here near my home at The Mines, same price as those selling here online

Think im gonna bend to this one too. The battery life and the device speed is just sooo tempting. yeah u can get all the best feature in N series but that all gone to waste if the battery is dead rite?

owh and im with amdx on that, E61i keyboard just felt perfect. tested this at shop, finger kinda fiddling. need to train back my trusty fingers~~ huhu.

Well i think that probably u can get it at that price coz its an ap phone. For avaxx or zitron set the price range is around rm1800 to 2000 plus. Correct me if i'm wrong

AP set... hence the really low price...

erm.. if u tried it indoor for GPS, its quite hard to get a lock compare to dedicated btGPSr.

haha latest info....just manage to get a lock up on my way to the office this morning. Initial lock up is about 10 mins....and after that it only took about 10 sec for a lock up and mind you that i only used GPS not AGPS (disabled)...so for those of you who just received this phone and tried to use the GPS for the first time....my advice is that you disabled the AGPS function first and use only the GPS to get an initial lock up, after that then can enabled back the AGPS function to get an ultra fast lock up on your position. This is because they will charge you the data rate of AGPS eventhough you could not get an initial lock up. will not be a problem for those with an unlimited data plan but to people like me without one is quite cumbersome.

owh can u possibly test if one uses only the internal GPS without AGPS at all? meaning no data connection. is it usable at least? well it will be much better if not using data connection at all, saves up right there

yup it is possible...infact i'm using it rite now i.e. only using integrated gps and network base (it is mandatory that you check network base otherwise the gps wont work) but uncheck assisted GPS and bluetooth GPS. and it work as expected. to get a lock on is not quite as fast (less than 5 secs) as with AGPS but its bearable (around 10 secs).

hmmm... like the bundled leather case pro and elegant.

btw.. did u guys manage to get the screen protector for E71? seem like yet to available as of now.

overall... i hv no regret giving up my SE G900 for this E71.. **as expected**

One thing that I was really shocked to see (and a little dissapointed after seeing) is the screen size! WTF?! N95 8GB is 2.8 inch, and this is 2.4 inch... Doesnt seem like much, 0.4 inch only... But i saw comparison photos, and damn! the E71 screen is TINY! So small! But i cant judge yet la... Must go and see proper unit in the shop first...

yeah im with u too. first pic leak thot same size, when it arrived it got very small screen 2.36 inch to be exact. anyway after few minutes using it, its good enuff, but certainly will be missing the superb 2.8 inch of E61i. (I thot even E61i screen got ppl complain already bout its screen size huhu). watching tv series on the go will be tinier this time well, if it at elast got a TV Out. then okay lah a bit, can just connect for presentation/movies for one of those days traveling in hotel, huhu. anyway they just dont want to make one perfect device does them? long term business profit in mind huhu.

actually.. to be honest... at first.. when i saw the actual unit.. i was like... shxts... so small.. so sleek! is this the replacement for E61i or what??

the size is almost similar to my E51 **yess.. this little monster perform damn well** slightly wider... but shxt!! it's slimmer than E51... with GPS.. 3.2mp AF camera.. WIFI... and HSDPA... with its new freescale cpu **faster than E90** and the super zippy performance.. i would say slightly faster than E51.. despite more "interface instructions" are needed to support the QWERTY buttons.

for 1.7k.. i hv nothing to complaint.. as i got my E61 at rm1788 as well previously. extra pound in weight.. and extra wider to hold without any camera.

another thing to add, i think all E-series.. has very useful LCD screen... under direct sunlight.. u still be able to read the text clearly.

yeah, screen clarity of E series is very respectable no matter in what circumstances. well in conclusion the tiny E71 packed a LOT of features, and best of all, its fast, and battery damn long can tahan, huhu. so it fits it features as multifunction device. no point having the best camera in the market etc but can tahan 3-4 hour ony on straight WiFi@camera use.

You know what, just found out something. If u hold the d pad long enough, it will show u nice big clock. Just tried it.

Yeah, I read about that...

and the one thing i'm a bit curious about this function is that you can't do it in a dark environment i.e bedroom at night with lights off. you could do it when there is a light source...hmmm isn't that a redundant function coz you obviously want to see the clock when you just wake up from bed rite?

Wow..... yes its finally out. I just got a call from a friend at Nokia Bangsar. She told me the price is RM1950. Hmm... I'm wondering why the price difference in original sets??? But the price difference is very minimal only. I'm gonna have a look at it this Saturday and low and behold, it will be mine. Wanna trade in my e61i...... yes, yes my friends a bit sad.... it has been serving me for the last year with no problems. Actually better than my companies blackberry. I gave back my Blackberry to the company and used my e61i instead. Hahaha........ Well... I can't wait to get my hands on it.....

Because thats from Nokia... High profile mah... make abit more profit la... if u buy from low profile shops, they give cheaper... if Nokia Bangsar has it, I guess every else should have it too... Which means I dont have to go out of the way to get it... klcc will do for me!

i went to check out the E71 just now... nice... i was very impressed... however, 3 things concerned me...

1) QWERTY keypad felt a bit small (I used a Treo 650 before this, and that has the best QWERTY keypad (and I'm not the only one who thinks so, see reviews of it, and everyone praises the keypad)... So when I tried this phone, it felt just a tad too small... but i guess i can get used to it...

2) The QWERTY keypad felt flimsy... it didnt feel solid... u noe? i little shaky... like it could wiggle around in its place... Same thing as number 1... Used a Treo 650, and the keypad was fantastic...

3) Being an E-Series, it felt VERY business-like... just the theme alone made me feel like it was a business phone... where are the casual features? I'm better off with an N95 or something if you ask me... but i've always wanted another QWERTY phone to replace my Treo 650...

Those are my main concerns about it (not so much number 3 la)... Other than that, the phone is awesome! Very slim! And I am really liking it! Nice pouch too!

10 hours? that is if you on the GPS as well as using WIFI straight for 1 day. If not on average will last you about three days moderate use. BAre in mind that it got powerful battery 1500 mAH WOO!

The SAR rating for E71 is a major turn off...

Would love to have this. Saw at shop for RM2.3K, and smaller by a quarter compared to E61i.

And yes, I can SMS one handed with my E61i, E71 will be a piece of cake.

whats the diff actually? coz certain models, they came from China n exported to Singapore n Malaysia, so how come they got diff quality from us? (unless their getting from diff source) n certain model like (i dunno latest model) previous w810,w760 n etc assemble in Shah Alam by Flextronics n exported to Sg (although Flextronics HQ in SG)

for me buying AP/Ori unit better than SG's unit, at least getting local warranty, easy to claim n etc, buying SG unit js like buying w/o warraty unless u r frequent traveller who travel to SG a lot

well, QC can be varies from country to country. since you know about flextronic, then you should know that other country also have manufacturer for SE and SE singapore might just get from other source if let say Malaysia/China no stock. this is also explain why we say buying phone needs some luck. becoz some batches are from other countries rather than usual source. this is what i get from the flextronic workers during my training.

buying ap/singapore is more likely to be having warranty issues where original set doesnt have. after all, if i am buying, i wud just want to try it out and see if it can last long in my hand. i dont say your thinking is wrong, but there is also grey area that you and i dont know.
