I bet this thread is gonna stay for eternity tongue.gif Just list down your last movie watched and perhaps discuss about it?

I just caught De Palma's The Untouchables which I thought is a very good flick. Great soundtrack as usual by Morricone, briiliant cast of Costner, Deniro and Connery and great directing. This was a much better film than Scarface which was just average. I'll give it a soild 8/10.

the last movie i saw was Restless, a fantasy Korean martial arts flick.

WHAT WAS GOOD: CG effects, cute korean main actress (if u can tahan her tak boleh actingness) & macho main actor (he was in MUSA too as the spear wielding dude.) being introduced to who i find is the Tony Leung Ka Fai of Korea laugh.gif

WHAT WAS BAD: a plot that plays like a video game, mediocre acting & lousy action choreography. (they did that Bourne Supremacy/Batman Begins camera shaking all over the place thing.) crappy assed cinema subtitles.

my score: 5/10. i'd give it a 4 if i did not watch it on a Wed (RM 7 only tongue.gif)

One of my favorite movies of all time. Okay, watching Monty Python and the Holy Grail but last movie watched was 12 Angry Men (recommended by QuickFire) which was absolutely brilliant. Despite its age, it is just brilliant. Loved that movie every single bit. And I disagree with your take on Scarface.

Nah, scarface is nothing compared to the other gangster movies. the soundtrack especially was horrible. the other aspects of the film was just ok IMO.

12 angry men is a brilliant movie, i watched it 3 times myself laugh.gif

Last seen was probably Hostel Part II, last week or two weeks ago. The first I thought wasnt great but still okay since I like gore. And the atmosphere was not bad too. This one was quite pathetic, less gore, less sex, more humour than horror, but the last scene was so bad and funny that it kicked ass!!

3/10.

Gonna try "It's a wonderful life". starring who?
Casablanca is great, I couldn't get it so much for the first time except some very witty dialogue and the heart melting "As times goes by".
But after the second time I loved it.

the untouchables is a good film.. wouldnt have seen it hadnt cinemax screened it like 2 years ago.. so thanx astro thumbup.gif ... but dude, gotta disagree on Scarface being average. personally to me, among gangster films, scarface is untouchable, no pun intended.. i am a fan of mob flicks, and i suggest you watch goodfellas, godfather trilogy if you havent already.
last movie i watched? ummm at the cinema: bourne ultimatum which was thumbup.gif for me and on tv (astro): the inside man which was a great spike lee joint.

and on my next to watch list, hehe the latest among gangster films : American Gangster! just finished downloading it so gonna watch it soon..

Yup I've watched all the gangster flicks and I like most of them. Scarface for me lacked in the soundtrack/score part which I really hated the 80's techno music. It didn't really work for me.

Well I'm not a big fan of musicals but Dreamgirls was really dissapointing. The first half was ok, but then it became very draggy with all the unnecessary drama around. and Jennifer Hudson shouldn't had won the oscar, she was no good!

That time they has VHS only, DVD aren't popular yet.
Still remember I borrowed Indiana Jones and the Rider of the Lost Ark, and Blade Runner thumbup.gif

Btw, City of God is very good, but I can't stand the kiddo killings part :sweats:

Last weekend (Saturday & Sunday), i juat watched three movie. Night watch, Day Watch and It's a Free World. All r nice movies. Night watch and Day Watch are russian movies, some sort like The Lord of The Ring but in modern days. U need to watch Night watch first coz it's the first part of the trilogy. Pity me, i watched the other way around. later, only i know the movie is based on three novels i.e The Night Watch (Night Watch), Twilight Watch (Day Watch) and Final Watch (internet sources said the title for 3rd movie will be Dusk Watch).

It's a free world oso not bad. Very nice storyline, and good british accents (i luv british accents compare to US).

watched Shrek The Third and Eye of the Dolphin over the weekend...

Shrek 3 kinda disappointed with it, very disintegrated and crappy storyline...the princesses could do more, but i think they got little time to show off their quirky characters, donkeys and puss-in-boot not as funny as before...

Eye of the Dolphin, now this is one movie not everyone can watch, i guess most will fall asleep.. kinda like the Free Willy movie but with dolphin instead of whale.. very laidback movie, featuring some nice locales at Bahamas...

Not really love the fighting part of The Condemned, the camera shake too much.

C+ detective is a better effort from Pang brother. Unfortunately the ending is like C+ to me. I expect something more out of this world. 'Recycle' had a poor & boring story in mid-way but the ending is outstanding.

Anyone know the Opening Thai song? I wan to listen the whole track~ it is catchy!

Well yeah, maybe so but Kelly was gorgeous lar and you can't say the same with Novak. How much was it? I bought North By Northwest the other day for RM 39.90. Returned it the next day (no DTS sound as promised on the cover) and exchanged for Strangers on a Train [preferred Train].

30 Days of Night. I don't like it at all. Pretty silly, probably because bunch of indians next to me making lots of racket, and didn't silent the bloody phone. I wish I have a gun (minigun or chaingun would be better) and blast those fools right from head to toe

Before that I watched 1408, I love how different it is compared to other horror movie. Its more physiological than more direct approach on today's horror movie. Some don't like it but I loved it, even though some of the elements don't make sense, Samuel (the manager) say that electronics don't work on that room, but the TV functions like a dream, also the tape recorder and laptop (??!!??)

Oldboy really took me by a surprise. I was expecting a twist but it was greater than what I imagined. Taxi Driver takes multiple watching, give it a few more tries.

recently watched Perfect Stranger. imo berry character is somewhat
blurry and confused. on the other hand, giovanni ribisi acting is quite
good. the plot of the story is quite loose and the twist is not that surprising anyway.

Exodus 出埃及记 (HK cop drama) - Pretty absurb storyline. Seems like a "steal" concept from women's talk. It stands out to be alternative drama. This is not action gun-fight cop movie. It is an indie + experimental genre type of drama. Overall it is not belongs to artistic or hard to understand movie.

The Queen - Maybe i am not much into the character background deeply. I felt it is just a normal drama. If you wan to know how the Queen felt on Princess Diana. You may take a look How the Queen react at that very moment. A movie you can watch when you are super free.

Irina Palm - Well, i was attracted to the synopsis. This is a sad drama.
Worth watching. It is a sensitive subjects if happen in our real life.
The ending is quite a little fantasy touch.

The King Of Kong - great movie / documentary on a bunch of people trying to set the world record in Donkey Kong (supposedly the hardest arcade game ever, only 2 people have completed it I believe).

The Man from the earth. A story bout a Caveman who had live until present world after 14,000 years.
He decided to revealed the mystery of his immortal life to his friends before he starting a new life.

The starting could be no idea how fancy the story would go on. I thought i can see some supernatural scene like from "The Powder".

Once the guy confessed his identity in the farewell gathering. The atmosphere is getting interesting & attractive to me.

At this second, you can decide to listen or turn off this show.

The whole movie is about argument amongst the friends which believed their immortal friend either had been lose his insanity. The so called "Cave man" friend had destructs his friends's trust against their own religion & mass scientific logical knowledge.

Some bull crap sounds so like to entertain peoples for wild times. Some bull crap could be so real that you can't deny it could be convincing based on your own believable judgement.

Listen to his talk-show if you not afraid to be challenge like a fool.

In the end, there is a firm answer to tell you whether he is a Caveman or not. It won't end up like X-files. Dun worry.

This is a well-written sci-fi story which is not involved with any CG effects, Action stunt or exposed female beauty.

The most simplest sci-fi movie which only using the wisdom of words to applause.

The whole concept is even interesting than "Da Vinci Code" as it is also a fiction which challenge the history of religion.

*
I watched Man of the earth as well and i thought the script was very good. pure sci-fi drama but it never gets tired. only recommended for drama and sci-fi lovers though...

Waoh..I almost forgotten Jodie Forster this movie.

Like her action performance since Panic Room.

If you like Hotel Rwanda, you may try "The Last king of Scotland".

And "Blood Diamond" also speak the darken inhuman hell in Africa. Look at those small kids was train to be terminator. Guns is the biggest voice in those country.

And "Lord of War" is also telling the story from poor African world.

Living no pride, no hope, no tomorrow.

Yeah, we are lucky to live at Malaysia still. Still We should protest what we have now before it becomes rotten like those country which was under the wicked politician's control.

sorry for off-topic.

watched bee movie was quite nice very meaningful

Another movie i think wasted my rm 11 at GSC midvalley was HITMAN the movie.

First those dumb government ( they supporting warez) keep censoring and at the end i dont really understand the movie. COmpare to the hitman game it beats the movie any time. The movie was so terrible dude they change the story until so dumb.

I finally watched 7 samurai yesterday and it was awesome. Puts the current hollywood to shame cz they simply don't do movies like this anymore. I wish there could be more directors like Kurosawa, David Lean and Sergio Leone.

Wonder u had watched The Magnificent Seven too? It had been said to be a western clone based on 7 samurai concept running.

I watched 7 samurai over 5 years ago. And i was amazed by the whole story running & character details.

Weeks ago, i just watched The Magnificent Seven. It is one amazing show wif some simple and depth message. I truly got touched in a conversation when Charles Bronson disallow the kids to say their parents is a coward to fight back the villains. Aiks..it is just not easy to become as a father.

Makakeke,
Do you mind intro some classic work from David Lean and Sergio Leone? Thx..

David Lean: Lawrence Of Arabia, The Bridge On The River Kwai. Both really breathtaking movies.

Leone: The Good The Bad & The Ugly, Once Upon A Time In The West (America), I personally enjoyed West > America.

I watched Magnificent 7 early this year and it was just decent i think. I just dislike how Hollywood champions "americanism" in their movies. Even though it was an adaptation, i still find it lacking in passion and spirit that 7 samurai possess.

Same goes to letters of iwo jima and flags of our fathers. letters was more honest, moving and emotional while flags was a tad propaganda-ish.

I Am Legend. Although I'd say I'm a fan of Will Smith's acting skills, he does really prove it in this movie. Brilliant performance from him. You could just share the emotions with him watching this movie. Recommended to all. 4 out of 5 star rating from me. thumbup.gif

Cool... Leone's The Good, THe bad & the ugly & Once Upon A time in the west are my father's favourite. He told me to get a copy for him to re-watch. I only watched a little for fun. And the "Malboro" theme is so classic which was applied in TV commercial after dat.

Yeah, you are right bout the Americanism. They just want to be as cool as they can to "flirt" with the ladies audience?!

Hmmm, The american movie always like dat one since so long time already. haha.. At least, a few of them still need to die to be legend. haa..

The crazy guy in "7 Samurai" still one of the interesting character until today. I need to get another copy of this. I watched in VCD last time.
Anymore classic work you recommend from Akira Kurosawa. I always think to watch "RAN". What do you say?

Need to grab Iwo jiwa & flags of our fathers. Will get "letters" first for sure!.

Across the Universe - I'm a bit of the Beatles fan, so I enjoyed this very much, despite the cliched story, uneven pacing and being overlong by about 20mins. Loved the radical alterations on some songs, especially I Want To Hold Your Hand. A good looking film, both visuals and cast wise. I also think the Let it Be sequence is probably the goosebumps moment of the year.

Brilliant. Logic and reason may be defied for plot advancement at some points, depending on how you see it, but in overall the film was awesome.

if you want a sub movie, this is it. its very long (3 and a half hrs i think) and its in german but the acting is superb, you really feel the emotions that come out from the actors and the submarine battle scenes oozes with tension. each pulse rings a bell in your heart. 4/5

Very neat movie, but you don't know which scene is real, which scene is not, lolz

My December List:
The Usual Suspect

Lost In Beijing - Great performance from Fan Bing Bing

Lust, Caution - Ang Lee really good at casting, a tragedy love story

I Am Legend - Although, I feel it is a bit slow, but it is better than any other vampires/zombies

Eye In The Sky - Quite a cool movie, Milky Way, too simple, but technology wise, is cool

The Detective - Hear the radio was promoting last time, watched it, great performance from Aaron, although, some scene they did not explain it, Liu Kai Chee* (not sure the correct spelling) is good and weird too

---

Thinking to watch Stardust, and Enchanted .

The Usual Suspects is one of the most overrated movies, EVER! the twist isn't even hard to see coming, and the entire plot is completely reliant upon the twist ending. Plus, very weak characters.

Memento is one of my favorite movies of the decade but like you said, movies like this doesn't gives you the same effect on multiple viewings. sixth sense and usual suspects still works for me, at least there is some drama to it. if you make a movie like usual suspects today, of course it'll be over-rated but 15 years ago, it was heck of a movie.

I just caught Amelie and in a word, its just beautiful.

if we look at old movies with a current perspective a lot of the essential effects and techniques wouldnt be impressive anymore

like the alien chest burster scene

seven samurai wound not be that interesting even, considering it has been copied countless times

and many more.

another one of the movies i watched lately

the lives of others

lan : german

the movie is good, its the one that beat pan's to the oscar. the main character was acted to perfection ( sad the actor passed away ) think the german kevin spacy in his best performance ever. his stare tells soo much emotion.

the movie its a somewhat spy story but a very realistic one. no bond or bourne, this is the real way how its done by recording and bugging (in that era at least). even the issues that it touchs are very realistic, east germany russian controlled not very politically free.

highly recommended 4/5

As 3kk pointed out, even if we were to watch the Pink Panther now, it wouldn't be funny anymore. Comedy then and comedy now is so different and as you said, gags have been ripped off many a time in other movies.

memento is far and away better than usual suspects and sixth sense. the reverse chrono was great, and the ending is so unforeseeable, yet totally realistic. usual suspects and sixth sense were just average movies with a great (according to most ppl anyway) ending.

very interesting movie, the acting for hitler was superbly done. but somehow i wont watch it a second time, maybe because its a biography of hitler's last days through the eyes of his secretary.
*
yeah the acting was great but the movie was too long and repetitive. how many suicides do we need to see?

I still like L.A. confidential and Fight Club even the twist is just one time only and I can see it coming even the first time watching it.

Anyway recently watched,
The Lookout, kinda good and entertaining. Good storyline and great acting by the Blind guy and Villain guy. Some little flaws and a cliche black glass guy but overall still good. One of my top 10 in 2008. 7.8

Mr Brooks, the ending part with the daughter was kinda lame. It's so unconvincing and spoil the whole thing. In fact every scene with her daughter is unnecessary, so does the Demi Moore sub plot. Otherwise would be an a solid one with more times on Kevin Costner and William Hurt dialogues and on works. 6.7

Big Fish, my X times watching it and still like it. Probably my favourite Tim Burton's movie. Obi wan McGregor is so well cast and the lady is too lovely. Just couldn't figure out why the Circus boss has to be a werewolf or something. 8.5
Can't wait for Sweney Todd

Trainspotting, simply amazing. Loves every seconds and every bits of it. Ewan McGregor, Robert Carlyle, Johhny Lee Miller, Ewen Bremner are all great. Highly recommended for those who hasn't and especially those with some experience of you know what. 9.0

Fight Club's twist isn't the best but its not the core of the movie. heck it even builds on the twist, the movie doesnt end at the twist. and the movie is so bloody entertaining and cool that the twist just makes an excellent movie even better.

i dont think you can change much of the events that happened, after all its based on a "historians" book and memoirs of the survivors that were near him.

Thx..

If you like Kurosawa, can watch also Rashoman (hope I spelled it correctly).

It's about different view / perspective different person can have towards a same singular event (murder in this case) influenced by emotion / self interest.

Also if anyone like dumb and dumber, can try to watch me, myself and Irene.

had a good laugh last weekend. Try to get the unrated version brows.gif

Managed to catch I Am Legend yesterday and i thought it was quite good. I see many haters in LYN but maybe cz ppl expect too much from movie of this genre. It was pretty enjoyable IMO.

And The Lives Of Others was even better. Really, i was sceptical before watching the movie. It beat Pan's for the Oscars but it really deserved it. Pan's was entertaining, fun and gory but Lives Of Others was more moving and dramatic. The ending line sums up the entire movie.

I think a lot of ppl expected I Am Legend to be a Resident Evil-style zombie-fest, hence the hate. It actually felt more like Day After Tomorrow, with more focus on the apocalyptic atmosphere and effects.

memento is far and away better than usual suspects and sixth sense. the reverse chrono was great, and the ending is so unforeseeable, yet totally realistic. usual suspects and sixth sense were just average movies with a great (according to most ppl anyway) ending.
yeah the acting was great but the movie was too long and repetitive. how many suicides do we need to see?
*
long : yes (its suppose to be an epic, LOTR is very long for me)

repetitive: ???????? i dont know what u emant by that

anyway.... it is based on true events so if there is 8 suicides thus...8 suicides they will show

kingdom was a good movie but i just hated how they typically stereotyped the arab and muslims in general as stupid terrorists.
but what else to expect since it is a hollywood film after all.. obviously 4 americans are better than millions of arabs. haha. the worst part is the nicest arab guy was the one who had to die. and i think shouldn't have taken that arrested developement dude as one of the FBI agents. he was sooo lame and not right for the role til i wished for him to die when he got kidnapped. miscast if you ask me.

Just watched Hairspray and Eastern Promises.

Liked the songs in Hairspray, brought back memories of Grease to a certain extent. Though I am a bit disappointed not to see Travolta singing more but then, he was more of a dancer than singer. Not bad but Christopher Walken? You ought to be kidding.

Eastern Promises - man, this is fecking awesome. The cutting throat scene was brilliant biggrin.gif Loved the movie but surprised to see how beautiful Naomi Watts is wub.gif And Virgo Mortenssen's the MAN!!!! He looks like Dolph Lungdren [the guy from Univeral Soldier and one of the Rocky films]. Great acting from him and the dude that plays the brother.

Wahaha! Yea, Naomi Watts from The Ring rite? Shes da sizzles....hot! Like an edgier Nicole Kiddman. The review for Eastern Promises looks interesting, although mentioning the throat cutting scene kinda freak me out. What's the story about?

Latest movie I watched was FUTURAMA the movie. Kinda dissapointing for me since I'm a big fan of the series. I was hoping they did something good comparing that Simpson the Movie did well, but it turned out bored. The movie was obvious to show that the producers are desperate to pull back in the fans. Haizz... 5/10

You two, go Wikipedia and type Naomi Watts and see the picture displayed. Disgusting tongue.gif

I knew she was pretty but that pic scarred my image. Muholland Drive and 21 grams will never be the same tongue.gif

Atonement quite clear but Superbad not clear. Speedy said that the movie not released in Malaysia so screener is the best available. Sigh.

Atonement was awesome, what a movie to end the year. It's not for everyone though. It's slow and dreary for some, but I loved it. It was detail, great storytelling and a brilliant performances from the cast. Keira was just ok but McAvoy thumbup.gif

I think it's definitely one of the good movies this year. Worthy of an Oscar nomination but maybe not there yet to win it. It's really a great movie IMO, but I really have to warn - it's not for everyone.

I can't really remember correctly the title but I think it should Snakes On The Plane, starring Smauel L. Jackson. It was a combination of comedy and action more and it sure kept me to the sofa till the credit starts to roll.
Nice movie la.

Just watched No country for old men and it's a real masterpiece. The Coens did it again, rendering another brilliant film. It's a film like no other, a thriller that is quiet, atmospheric, still and well focused and hardly or no score at all, (United 93 being the only film with minimal score I've seen) but yet so rich in context, superbly written screenplay and no wonder the brothers wanted to get Javier Bardem to act in this film, he was great portraying a cold, ominous killer.

It's not surprising why the critics love this film so much, it's one of a kind.

dont waste your time and money if you're gonna watch american gangster at the movies. it will be far too censored. find other sources and watch it full length and unaltered. trust me, you won't regret watching the film. best movie of 2007 IMO. thumbup.gif thumbup.gif thumbup.gif

The Kite Runner. It's been awhile since I last watch a movie like this - pure, honest, emotional and heartbreaking. Another great effort by Marc Foster, 4/5 from me.

predator

watching this show and the recent alien during the AvP period really makes AvP look far worse then it is, the original predator was far more menacing and deadly compared to the cheap pussified versions we get today. the first time in the movie we see how the predator treats its prey is still as memorable.

although there are some wtf moments and certain sub par acting but the acting and things aint as horrid as AvP, like Mac who went on a berserker rampage. his face was far more convincing that what anyone put up in the whole AvP series. and the tension is great, the feeling of being stalked was there all along.

its very sad that movies these days with all the top notch tech and budget cant beat a show that was created in a B movie sense with limited tech.

7.5/10

aliens

ok im watching all these old shows, they show it on astro and i somehow manage to catch them. its funny astro shows all the older shows of the ones in the cinema but the older ones make us grind the new ones into pulp

take aliens for example, a genre change. no more tension or suspense like the first but hell its super. cameron uses the motion sensor to its fullest and it creates one of the best sci fi moments ive ever seen, like ripley and co being trapped in the control tower which was pure class.

funny that movies like this with limited effects can draw the emotions from us, the beeping of the motion sensor as the aliens get closer that really pumps you up. or my fav the air duct scene, which is used in both 1 and 2. scary, and suspenseful the first, thrilling and action packed the second

i guess its down to the directors, and well we all know who is at the helm of both movies. legends considered by most that live today, the people who brought us classics like the terminator series, titanic, blade runner and so on.

8.5/10

Woo.. I've been looking forward to see Gone Baby Gone since last year. Big fan of Lehane's novel.

Anyway I've seen 'The Man From Earth', 'Once' and 'Superbad' recently. Love that guy from Arrested Development but kind of sick of all the d*** jokes after awhile. 'Once' is a fantastic movie about a street performer/songwriter/vacuum cleaner repairman meets a gal on the street, chemistry clicked when both playing together for the first time, writing music together, while learning more of each other as friendships grow. Watching 'The Man From Earth' is a new experience for me, I never thought a one-and-a-half hour movie with its characters continuously talking to each other on the same place can be this interesting.

Gone Baby Gone is fantastic, probably because Ben directed it tongue.gif

Once is really good. I liked it instantly after 10 minutes, you should watch Before Sunrise/Sunset too, almost the same concept, just without the music theme.

I gotta say at first I was disappointed after knowing that he was going to direct the film. But after the reviews was out, I was thinking, "hmm.. this guy is not so bad after all.." tongue.gif

I watched Once mostly because of the musical theme, usually not into love stories, but your recommendations kind of got me interested. A love story sequel in 10 years starring the same lead actors? That doesn't come often.. Will check them out thanks!

Jaws 2 - A guilty pleasure. Not a patch on the original of course, but Schieder is awesome to watch and for my money, Williams outdoes himself with this score. Not quite as action packed as genre sequels go, with the first half mostly a character drama on Brody and the second half a teen slasher flick with a big shark. Still, good dumb fun.

Burga - who thinks the two Jaws end credits are some of Williams' most beautiful music

Tonight watched 2 movies back to back. First movie was GABRIEL. Its a story about battle between archangels and the Fallen (bad angels I guess). The whole story looks like MTV music video with dark city/rain/gloomy alley background. Didnt even bother to watch the last 10 minutes of the show, coz the next movie CLOVERFIELD was starting. All I can say is that GABRIEL is a pass for the movie. Probably worthy to watch in the DVDs, but its abit slow in the story and the fighting scene are nothing to shout about. The only memorable scenes are when the archangel gabriel (in his human form) has a bright blue eye. I bet women would go gaga over the hero. happy.gif

Cloverfield to me is a stunning and innovative piece of movie making. Its just like Blair Witch project but with bigger budget. happy.gif Oh and the mysterious entity is not a ghost, but a giant freakin monster (think the host, godzilla, starship trooper). The characters portrays reallike people in the sense that they do not have short takes. Each clips is like 5~10 minutes shots so their blunders, and dialogues feels natural. Lots of humor one liners and the sound effects are superb! Only available in cinemas for now. Word of caution, if you're open to the concept of movie in the view of handy cam, then by all means watch this movie. You'll feel like there are truly monsters in our world.

It's just that I don't watch that much romance movies really, but I'm interested in anything good, dialogue-ish or not. By the way I have just watched Gone Baby Gone, at the end of the movie I was pretty much speechless. It's crazily good for a first time director. It is everything, even more, than what I imagined it to be. Affleck did a really wonderful job transforming the book into a movie(except the Angela part). And I hope there's more to come. smile.gif

Already watch a 2005 Korean Movie title Jeni, juno.. So after watch the english version of Juno, i still prefer the Korean version..

BTW, yesterday i spent 4++ hours watching Australian Open, almost 2 hours for BPL (MU vs Reading) and another 6 hours watching movie..

These are 3 movies i watched yesterday:

1) The Jammed: 8.5/10
A good movie about human traficking, i prefer this movie compare to another movie with the same theme i.e 'Trade'.

2) Sweeny Todd (2006 released): 9/10
Never bother to watch this movie at first but when i saw advertisement about the new version of this movie featuring Johnny Depp (2008 release), i think i better watch this first so that i can compare btw the two.. Really good movie and it will be a hard task for our Jack Sparrow to make it better..

3) Beowulf: 7.5/10
The story is so-so, but i like the awesomeness of the CGI they are using to produce this movie.. The finger licking good angelina jolie still looks almost 100% real and thus scorchingly hot..

I love holidays, watched many movies today laugh.gif One of the movies that I managed to catch today was James Cameron's The Abyss, what an amazing movie.

Can't believe I left the DVD unwatched after almost a year buying it. Seriously I would put this film on par with Aliens, probably better. There's no monster but in Cameron style, it deals with tense human emotions coupled with some great suspense. And Ed Harris is such a great actor, he was brilliant in this one. It's visually stunning and definitely one of the best sci-fi movies ever made.

The Abyss is so under-rated if you ask me. It was brilliant bcz Cameron created a suspenseful film without the horror factor of aliens/monster whatsoever. Sunshine was close to that but failed in the final third. 2001 still sets the bar for a film of this genre.

Yes, it will happen tomorrow, no worries. Just call if anything tongue.gif

i am a legend ***
will smith is showing that he is a very capable actor but i felt that he is a camera hog for this movie. there is only 1 real actor in this movie and thats you-know-who. the suspense was quite good but the story seems to be a lil boring at times. if the ending was a lil better i think i might like to watch this movie again. too bad though..

beowulf***
i have great hopes for this movie but when i watch this movie i was really dissapointed. a CGI movie that did not made full use of the talent actors available to it.

the only reason this movie got 2 stars and not 0 from me was because the visual effects are really amazing considering its not from hollywood-land. the story is absolute rubbish!! just sit back and have someone wake you up when the snake pops out.

*
The Abyss was such a revolutionary movie because what they did in the movie became true for real deep sea exploration. I'd say Cameron came from the future because how can he know the true concept of deep sea, the correct physics to use in the vehicle and so much more.

correct! The Abyss is basically a movie about technology in deep sea exploration with some e.t. elements, J.C. himself admitted at that time he was fascinated with the technologies.

In fact it was his exploration to the bottom of atlantic ocean that sparked his interest in making a little movie call The Ship Will Never Sink tongue.gif

Hitman: 7/10

Another same old story, i thought i watched Dark Angel male version... Not much to say, American always win against Russian..

Love Lies Bleeding: 8.5/10

I like this kind of story.. If the ending was different, i would give this movie 9 out of 10.

A Mighty Heart: 9/10

Never heard about Daniel Pearl b4, but now i knew. blush.gif Story about journalist being captured in Pakistan, great to see Angelina Jolie in differnt role..

The Island - Probably the smartest material Bay has ever touched. Of course, he does what is expected of him, choosing to not answer the difficult questions the material poses and turns it into an all out actioner. Also, the setting comes across as pretty THX-1138 like although its accused of lifting heavily from Parts: The Clonus Horror (a movie I have not seen). THat said, the action is good, and it looks good, like all Bay movies do.

The Great Debaters, directed by Denzel Washington and it was good. I know "inspiring" movies like this are a tad too familiar but the ending scene was really powerful, I was an inch close to stand up and applaud it tongue.gif

Agree about the part where it's the smartest material that Bay has touched. Micheal Bay's movies were always pretty much eye candy but brainless, the best example being the not-so-long-ago Transformers. Sure, it looked pretty but the plot was quite non existent and boring.

The Island gave us much moral conflicts to think about, especially when the technology of cloning is gradually advancing. The entire movie had virtually no boring parts which slowed down the story telling, while the boom bang action wasn't as overdone as other Bay movies. Armaggedon was pretty good though, but of course the plot was hilariously illogical.

Acting wise, Ian McGregor and Scarlett Johansson were pretty good in portraying innocent and pure mortals who didn't know anything except for their programmed life. And of course, the appearance of the charismatic Steve Buscemi and Michael Clarke Duncan were much welcomed.

My complaints about this show were the stupid ending (there's no way to end the story anyway) and the constant merchandising of products doh.gif

Lars And The Real Girl, a heart warming story about Lars Lindstrom (Ryan Gosling) who brings home the girl of his dreams. The only problem is that she's not real - she's a sex doll Lars ordered off the Internet. The movie moves on with the people around him labelling him a maniac/psychopath but they slowly transformed into a community who loved and cared about the sex doll.

Good movie I have to say, very under-rated and another good performance by Gosling.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.

a mouthful of a title to type out, but the movie was excellent. Beautiful cinematography, a beautiful, hypnotic score by nick cave, and some damn fine acting by everyone. Be warned though, the movie is very slow and lasts two and a half hours. The pace is poetically slow, but its the only way way to pan out the plot so that we get to delve into the lives of the characters while setting the eerie, haunting atmosphere.

Brad Pitt and sam rockwell along with the entire cast give thoroughly brilliant performances, but its casey affleck who steals the show as Robert Ford. He looks to be a stellar actor playing weird, insecure characters like this. (I thought he was awful in Gone Baby Gone, he just cant cut an authoritative figure, and his slurred speech........)

the soundtrack is great to fall asleep to. just utterly hypnotic.

9/10

Paris, je t'aime, which means "Paris, I love you", currently showing in GSC midvalley and I liked it. It's a fantastic film with 15-20 short stories directed and written by some of the greatest names in the film industry, the Coen brothers are one of them. It also stars Natalie Portman, Steve Buscemi, and Elijah "Frodo" Wood, just one of the few hundreds who acted in this movie.

Very interesting approach to a film and ingenious. The first hour, it felt weird watching a movie of this genre but as the minute passed, I wanted more, and more short stories. Very beautifully written and the last story really summed up a beautiful movie, making me to fall in love with Paris.

Some talented actors acting well in a somehow weak or non existence plot which lasted 2.5 hours.
Though a fans of Danny and even Paul Dano, very disappointed seeing it as a Oscar nominated best pic.

Yeah. Rest of the aspects are top notch, tense, emotion are high, superb acting by Daniel D Lewis, some eye opener of mining which I like, the greed, the hatred, the doubt, the lost people at the church of the 3rd revelation, the priceless Milkshake scene, high pitch and strong scores that was ......well strong but a bit harsh and overdone just to make up the intensity but I think the plot are weak and that is what matter the most to me.
Will give it a second try, but for the moments, it didn't convince me as one of the best films of 2007.

On an Edward Zwick roll the past few days.

Glory - An excellent movie examining an aspect of the Civil War not often shown. Great performances from the cast and a brilliant James Horner score tops off this masterpiece. ****/****

Legends of the Fall - A sprawling epic, good doses of well done melodrama, gorgeous cinematography, an all star cast, and one of the best Horner scores ever. Very lush in the old fashioned Hollywood way, and thoroughly enjoyable for it. ****/****

The Last Samurai - Definitely one of Zwick's weaker efforts. Yes, it looks gorgeous like all of his movies, its heavy on the melodrama and its epic. Unfortunately, Cruise (I consider him a pretty decent actor) cannot pull off a period role. There is something too contemporary about his aura. Zimmer's score is a retread of Gladiator with added taiko drums and shakahuchis. All this leads to a leaden feel and a certain lack of freshness. An acceptable watch if you are a fan of historical epics or Zwick, but he has done far better. **/****

Blood Diamond - Its action is great, but its not all the movie has to offer. In between all furious action sequences, this movie has a social and political message. the The acting is excellent, the tone is gritty but sappy melodrama does creep in as the film goes on. The thing is, there aren't many people who can do melodrama as well as Zwick. A fantastic film and a biased ****/****

Burga - who noticed that he has used the words 'melodrama' and 'epic' numerous times in this post.

Perhaps my English failed me but when I said plot, I meant the storyline.
I don't see how all these good things could add up to a good plot.

OMG i like this movie, nice thumbup.gif
however the ending part was really a very very tough call..
either wrong for a right reason or responsibility sweat.gif

butterfly effect was just repetition.  horrible movie.

i kinda disagree.

Mind to elaborate what you mean?

What the protagonist did again and again is because he is trying to change things that went wrong but none of the things/actions that happened are repeating.

The context may be repeating but the action certainly does not.

You are entitle to your opinion of course but to call the movie horrible is certainly extreme

Its the larger mystery of governmental secrecy and cover-ups. Does the public really know what is going on? That kind of thing.

Thus the movie further explores the possible alternatives to the official story. That in itself is mysterious.

1)Lock, Stock And 2 Smoking Barrels.
2)Snatch.

Watch LSA2SB and rush back to the DVD shop at 1a.m. to get the follow up Snatch and like both very much.

British sure know Humour better than American.

3)Adaption
I think it's damn great and even a tad bit better than Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind and Being John Malkovich. I mean, it is on the same level with these great movies without a brain portal material, it's just pure script writing.
Chris Cooper is so so so versatile that I couldnt recognize him in every movie until he speaks.

Thanks I've been spare from those.
I didn't watch enough English film at the first place.
But so far most that I watch Trainspotting, Hot Fuzz, Shawn of the Dead, This is England, Cash Back etc are all very well made films to my liking.
Even some france movies that I only understand by reading subtitles.
But just that their humor are just so natural that need no jim carey face to pull off and it cames so naturally like life itself that need no attempt.

Well. I think it was brilliant and literary not a single second I felt boring.
It's original, sophisticated, witty, lively and I can sit there whole day listening to the British cockney slang and funny conversation.
I think it's a very well combination of story, music, camera works, editing, acting and directing, especially in snatch. Although snatch has no originality to speak off as it is basically a remake a LSA2SB with a bigger budget and some tuning to please the American dudes.
Just never thought a gangster flick could be made this way, an eye opener.

Shawn of the Dead is great, but Hot Fuzz is a terrible unengaging mess. Likewise, A Hard Day's Night is terrific comedy, but the only thing good about Help! is the production design of the Beatles' apartment.

this movie makes me smile. it a very sweet movie. it really reminded me of the time i first got my hands on a camcorder over 2 decades ago. war, fuzzy feeling all over again

then you have Michel Gondry at the helm doing his funky editing and camerawork. is there any other director who can is more innovative than this man! in terms of camera angles and effects i think Gondry just bettered his previous film Eternal Sunshine. But i still think Eternal Sunshine is still the better film plotwise.

i recommed this film to any young filmaker or people looking for a film that make them smile from start to finish. its not a laugh at loud film but boy it made me feel like a kid again. Gondry even teaches you how to shoot a scene so it looks like an old 1920's kinda movie.

what a way to break the fourth wall huh?

8/10....... really sweet and innovative movie

but here is a note. if you hate Jack Black or Michel Gondry film. stay away please. you will hate this movie even more if you are not a fan. as for me.........i am still smiling. i watched this film last saturday. when wast the last time a movie made you feel good inside??

Love Actually. I actually bought the DVD bcz of recommendations from my friends who mentioned that it is more than a chick flick, very meaningful and I decided to give it a try.

I must admit that it does feature a stellar cast (Neeson, Linney, Grant, etc) and meaningful, especially if watched during Christmas, but it might be pretty harsh should I compare this to the heavyweights of Crash, Babel (who are almost in the same parallel-lives genre) but Love Actually pales in comparison.

At least it didn't satisfy my Unholy Trinity of C's - corny, cheesy, cliche. Love Actually was corny at the right moment and was close to being cheesy but definitely cliche. Most of the scenes were rather predictable and I know that is how it's supposed to work for a holiday flick like this but they could have done it more un-cliche-ish.

The scenes were finely put together, just not solid enough. And some of the scenes were totally predictable, it kinda got bored midway. The Colin adventure to the US was a stupid scene, although it had Elisha Cuthbert in it tongue.gif Totally unnecessary.

It's not an easy film to pull off anyway but it did just fine for me, nothing to shout about.

3/5

@amalost

yeah. the cinema was sparsely occupied. this film is very under tha radar. Michel Gondry is not big here in malaysia. most people also find Jack Black annoying. so thats two things going against this movie

me?

I LOVE GONDRY! he is like my film god. i decide to watch this movie solely on the fact that he directed it! 9 ringgit well spent!! its better than the dissappointing NCFOM and I Am Legend.

Juno. Slightly disappointing from Reitman, after his fantastic and cleverly-funny-as-hell Thank You For Smoking. I cant remember laughing a single time in Juno, plus I found Ellen Page's character very unlikeable. It's still a light, well-structured movie, but it's no big deal for me. 7/10.

HELVETICA

was pleasently suprised that a documentary about a typeface can be so interesting. a commentary how a typeface can play a major role in our daily life.these days i walk around looking for helvetica.a must see for all graphic design or FCM student. i finally know how E Spiekerman looks like. his book is a required reading in school.as for me. i dont really like the typeface Helvetica. I am a verdana persona

27 Dresses !! Good show that one. Although i cant relate to it at all, i thought it was pretty brilliant. Some of my friends didnt like it though. The most disturbing part of watching the movie was having the couple beside me who were repeating the lines of the movie to one another. I was going to lose it !!!

I was listening to the soundtrack even before I watched the movie and it was quite a nice, fun album. Too many listens and it becomes too twee though. it didnt work as well in the movie, the soundtrack was a bit too conspicuous for my liking.

Martian Child. Very well balanced drama, comedy, and an inspirational flick. I'm a fan of Cusack when he does movies like this. The chemistry between him and Bobby Coleman (the kid) was very natural and lovable. I don't usually find movies like this really good but this one worked for me.

you can see the reaction of the crowd here, kinda of funny to see the reaction but it is indeed one scary flick.

This thread needs to be stickied. Anyway.

Saving Private Ryan - Great action sequences, but the movie is slightly ruined by the ending. I think an ambiguous approach would have been far superior. I'd prefer ending it on the shot of Ryan after Miller dies than the sentimental cut back to the present time and forcefeeding the audience that the sacrifice was worth it.

The Prestige - This is my third viewing, and I tried to approach the movie differently and not get irked by the sci-fi twist too much. Alas, it was to no avail. The problem with this movie is that its problems lead into one another. Disregarding my dislike for the sudden sci-fi slant, the fundamental flaw here can be traced back to hopelessly underwritten characters. Now, this isn't really a major problem for half the running time, as what makes the movie compelling is the behind the scenes look at the various tricks they come up with to one-up each other. However, the outlandish twist just kills that interest. This is where the shit hits the ceiling. The movie has no interesting characters to fall back on and thus fails to ride out the twist. It collapses. And on top of that, it continues to bludgeon the audience with one clumsy twist after another from that point onwards ad nauseam in what seems as an attempt to appear smart. Final verdict? Up to the halfway point, its pretty entertaining, but after that its just plain awful without a single redeeming factor. Well, I honestly did try to like it, but in the end it just gives off the same cheap vibe The Usual Suspects does.

The Illusionist - This movie is let down by one element. Edward Norton. In his attempt to come across as enigmatic, he just ends up being boring and bland. As it is, its just a barely passable movie. One wonders how much better it would have been had Norton and Bale swapped places.

I agree it would have been better with Bale replacing Norton but I think the biggest letdown of Illusionist is the writing, not so much of the acting. It seems to me that Norton is only capable of a stronger, tougher, energetic role like what he did in AHX and Primal Fear (which I think is his best acting, though I like him in AHX).

Last movie watched - Charlie Chaplin's City Lights and I still find it very entertaining. I use to watch his works a lot when I was younger with my dad and watching it again after 10-15 years later gives you a different kind of vibe. Still an awesome classic IMO. Damn awesome in fact.

Here are my last few movies that i watched recently,

-Kung Fu Panda- I think it's the best Dreamworks work so far.Quite funny through out the movie.

-Groundhog Day- It's a romantic comedy.Love it too.

-American History X- One of the best movies i ever watched. Edward Norton's acting was really good in this movie.I'll forgive them for his horrible acting in Hulk.

-Seven- Another good movie. The crime scene was a bit too much for me.

-12 Monkeys- Another old movie.Didnt like it very much.

Heat - watched it to prepare for the Dark Knight. I can already picture Ledger and Bale as something similar to Pacino and DeNiro. The New World...abt Pocahontas (not to be confused with the Disney version!)

It was good...so good I googled the history of Pocahontas and even ask my dad (who even knows it very well). A great movie for history lovers...or those that love artistic movies.

why this thread like inactive already

anyway watched 3 damn nice movies last week

1. Gone Baby Gone - A few minor twist here and there. Just when u think the movie is over. And it really get us thinking what is right and what is wrong?

2. Primal Fear - A court room drama starring Richard Gere and a very young Edward Norton. Edward Norton is damn amazing and really good story with a twist

3. Crank - Another Jason Stranham (likely wrong spelling) no-brainer actioner. But it was damn fun all the way. Sex on the street with people watching FTW nuff said

Just watched the 1962 original version of The Manchurian Candidate and it was brilliant. It covers the various themes of sociology, psychology, politics, conscience and it's also very well acted from the cast. I don't know anything about the recent remake but I doubt it'll better this classic.

Unforgettable scene when Erin pwns the other girl with all the memorized details and phone numbers.

The Dark Knight - for all the sudden i thought Heath Ledger was the main character... His acting skill was awesome... RIP Heath Ledger

Red Cliff - 3 minutes of tony leung and chi-ling 'special scene' was cut.. so unfair paying 12 bucks to watch.
I wanna see chi-ling only... she driving me crazy.. LOL

Watched TDK on Tues... kickass... but I've already discussed that in the TDK thread so I'll leave it out.

Just watched "The Bucket List" few hours ago.

Pretty good movie, or should I say good concept. The idea of living one's life to the fullest before the end is indeed an attractive idea.

Too bad the script ain't exactly the best around as the story telling wasn't particularly exciting. There weren't many dialogues worth remembering as most of them were mediocre and lack the spark. The entire plot was quite flat as there wasn't even a climax... it's just plain, yet not exactly boring I must say.

Their travels seem to be very fake too, it's clear that the actors were only acting in a studio while the backdrops of the areas they visited were superimposed to the rear. If not for Jack Nicholson's and Morgan Freeman's presence in the movie it would have been less interesting.

Overall, there's nothing much to shout about. I would say this is more like watching a lengthy TV drama more than a blockbuster movie; but it's refreshing to have a simple yet meaningful movie to watch... Too many crash-boom-bang boxoffice hits can be quite weary.

Just saw:

American Hardcore

Awesome movie. About the Hardcore movement in US in the early eighties. Great footage of BlackFlag, BadBrains and Minor Threat. Great interviews with Rollins, HR and other Hardcore greats. Finding out that some of the roots of the movement came from the alienation of suburbia was surprising.

Should check it out...

nice movie, highly recommended
just like the Chaos theory itself, everything seems to be unrelated in the beginning where finally it'll linked to each other thumbup.gif

*added: the movie is abit like 11:14 ... where in the end of the movie, everything will be related to each other and back to point 1

Juz finished watching My Sassy Girl movie, English Version.. What to say.. sweat.gif The korean version of my sassy girl already set a high bar and as expected, this movie not even reach half of it. I didn't get connected to scenes where i supposed to feel sad/ to get the emotion.. 4.5/10 from me.

Other movies that i watch for the last 3 days:

Postal German : 6/10 - humour and nothing else, but it's really a bad humour
Purple violet : 7.5-8/10 - Definitely better than my sassy girl. I'm touched blush.gif
Hancock : 6.5 / 10 - Good action but same story line - super hero cannot die
Made of Honor : 7.5/10 - Good movie but spoiled by the ending. Should have a better ending IMHO.

So, tonite gonna feast my eyes with red cliff. Hopefully, it will be a good movie.

I actually found DOTD highly entertaining, even though it was not as scary and horrifying as say, 28 Days Later. Have you watch the original before? Was it good?

nope i had the choice to rent that or this, and i took this. then again the ori is a zombie classic, if you love those kinda movies its a must watch. DOTD was ok some parts were totally pointless. the "enjoyment" scene where those guys had flashes of fun in the mall was like out of place and so on.
i was kinda expecting a zombie fun in the mall itself, but owh well that didnt come to be.

For crying out loud.
The strategies and formation was so badly presented, I bet it wouldn't help a bit unless you're fighting with a bunch of retarded leading by yet another retarded general. But that's exactly what they show give you. The One man show is a prove of blardy bad formation. Superhero fighting not even competent enemies. Too many man standing there holding their spears "waiting" for their turn to attack but clearly there is only 1 man there to kill, that one man that keep killing his comrades.
The acting was bad. Takeshi portrayal of Zhu Ge Kong Ming kills the show. Even their ace Tony Leung did not deliver as many said he would.
He was his usual trademarked stiffness, blank face, calm dialogue, and grin. You can review back all his work for this few years.

I understand that the movie was targeted to many western audience so the using of too much of modernized languages is making it unrealistic but it is forgiven. But can you believe there is no witty & memorable dialogue in a show that contains one of the brightest man ever in Chinese history and few of the greatest character of all time.
Some pigeon scene and the flirting scene was totally out of no where.

Let's hope the second part will be better.

Couldn't get my hand on the Romero version so I couldnt compare.
But my impression of it was the opening was so well done.
Busy hospital showing a "hint" then the nurse on his way back to the lovely neighborhood. It calms you down and make you emotional ready for the movie to reveal itself then suddenly "BAM".
