Love Guru

it sucked. it sucked so bad that i joined half of the audience and walked out the cinema en masse. i believe mike myers is a comic genius, and i still do. however this movie is the worse comedy ever. it's so bad that it's painful to watch. atleast i could still sit through superhero movie and disaster movie.

this one is a no go.

i just saw "Burn After Reading" (Brad Pitt, John Malkovich, Tilda Swinton etc).

it's a very good story with a good story telling. it's funny yet intelligent. it's how all the characters were brought together and eventually tied to each and everyone bcoz of simple misunderstanding is simply awesome biggrin.gif.

mind u, it's not great. nothing outstanding in this film. but it's like a great drama about life and how eveybody has secrets and nothing is what it seems!

Coco Avant Chanel

the early years of coco chanel (audrey toutou), the radical fashion icon that almost single-handedly transformed the world of fashion.

it's title basically translates to coco before chanel, which is quite an accurate portrayal of the movie. but the tagline and the trailer threw the audience off. we were fed with the idea of a film portraying how coco rises in the world of fashion in the early 20th century, her motivation, passion and eventually how she changed the world.

but it doesnt. the film is quite 2-dimensional. it's a love story of how coco began her life in an orphanage and eventually as a cabaret singer. she wanted to make a name as either a singer or an actress, became a mistress to someone whom she thought could realize her dreams but didnt, fell in love with a foreigner only to be heartbroken, and suddenly the film skips to her becoming famous.

i was like... WTF?

The Ugly Truth

almost feminist individualistic TV producer meets misogynistic TV presenter only to find that opposite do attract.

it's a romcom. if u love katherine heigl and gerard butler, u dont wanna miss this. i think both of them delivered their characters perfectly, and the story really illustrates the strength and weakness of each character. this leads to an unlikely alliance between two absolutely contrasting characters, but eventually both succumbed into an intolerable urge to snog each other.

it has every single element u can find in other romcom films. but it was brilliant done, the dialogues were witty and engrossing, the jokes were laced with every form of sexual connotations yet not over the top. it's a very enjoyable movie.

6/10.

Time Traveler's Wife

ahhh... if u ever wanna look for a movie to bring the girlfriend, this is the one. be warned, it's quite a tear jerker, only second this year to my sister's keeper. the story is tight and very well adapted from the book. ofcourse, there are certain things that were omitted and slightly changed, but it keeps in line with the essence of the book.

i guess u can read the synopsis elsewhere. i'm just gonna share my verdict:

Inglourious Basterds

pretty brilliant. a great WW2 tale presented in a very cerebral yet fun and enjoyable way. if u're a fan of classic cinema, u shouldnt miss all the references to most of them. this film is marketed as an action film, but actually it's not. well, it has actions, but that's not the main point.

but do look out for the main villain. he's AWESOME!

Broken Embraces

most might not be familiar with this if they're not exposed to spanish cinema. this is the latest masterpiece of the oscar award winning director pedro almadovar staring (again) penelope cruz. it's a brilliant drama with a twist of mystery that takes u into the life of a blind film maker and those around him.

it's a heavy drama, takes u one step at a time, and tells the story passionately. the visual ambience is enhanced by the choice of music that is very almadovar. if u've seen his previous work "Volver", u'd know what i mean. it's a brilliant film, very satisfying even for me who's not so much into drama.

verdict: 8/10

and owh, u get to see penelope cruz' marvelous twin assets.

Skeptic

it's a low budget horror/thriller movie where the only notable person in the film is zoe saldana, but even so, she's holding only a small character in it. others are less known, maybe in tv drama or something, but the film is brilliant.

it's about this guy who's a skeptic over religion or anything supernatural, sort of inherited a huge mansion after the death of his aunt. he was on the verge of divorce, so as an act of separation, moved into the mansion alone. weird things started to happen, weird sounds, weird visions. so he started to investigate, and reveals one by one the secret behind the mansion.

it's not a new thing. there's nothing groundbreaking in this film. but it was told in such a way that it's convincing, down-to-earth, and tries to rationalize everything from the protagonist's perspective. and lots of scary, jumpy stuffs that would be great for watching with ur girlfriends.

Dorian Gray

although it's based on the brilliant novel by oscar wilde, i'd have to say this film is sorta average at best. i cant really shake the feeling that this is almost the same with league of extraordinary gentlemen. the treatment of the film is very similar. but one thing commendable is colin firth. he's probably the only thing holding the film together.

Pandorum

i went to see this movie with little expectations. but i was glad that it didnt disappoint. i'm not sure why the critics are bashing this movie. it had a good and strong story line, the science is grounded and it made a lot of reference to scifi novels, especially space opera.

the movie is greatly claustrophobic. it's psychological with a sense of urgency. it's almost like deadspace (the game), with a slightly different take a quite a good twist at the end.

this film sets quite a good backstory, which i wont be surprised if there's a sequel or even prequel coming. heck, i wish they'd do a game, spawn several novels or perhaps a TV-series. but like i said, the critics are bashing this film just bcoz it was different from what they expected. that in turn will put off people from watching this film, making it a box-office flop. so bye bye sequels.

i give it a 6.5/10

pandorum is a good movie rate it 6/10..better than alien vs predator..kinda confusing at first but u get to know more later on..

i agree. it's definitely better than most recent scifi-horror out there, but it's no sunshine or event horizon. i guess they're being bashed bcoz they borrow too much from other movies. but then again, if u're a scifi buff, a lot of movies nowadays borrowed stuffs from novels. so i dunno what's the big deal is.

these guys borrowed, and made it good.

Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus

this is the last movie by heath ledger, directed by terry gilliam.

man, the story is pretty awesome. it's a stuff that u normally get from a fantasy novel. it's brilliant but also screws u up. u would need time to get used to it, and u would need to follow the dialogues pretty closely.

the acting is superb. heath ledger delivered well, infact u kinda wished that u can see more of him. the delivery and the lines are pretty witty. i would recommend this to anyone.

lily cole is surprisingly good. at first i thought she's devon aoki (too fast too furious, dead or alive). but then i realized it's a totally different girl that sorta looked like her, but british, can act properly and seriously hotter than devon aoki.

Event Horizon

I remember when I first watched this. I was 9 years old I think, and it scared the shit out of me. I didnt even finish the movie. Now many years later, seeing it for the first time since then, it doesnt really frighten me anymore. It's really creepy for about 40 minutes though. Great, nightmarish set designs. A truly chilling premise. This is the kind of movie that necessitates wise use its time to mount the feeling of unease and dread. Paul WS Anderson only bothers doing so to an extent (ie for 40 or so minutes) before setting loose the gore and cheapo slasher thrills. And after that it simply degenerates into an exercise in blood and gore. Not to mention some inappropriate humour as well, and I'm not sure if it's intentional. In the end it's a decent horror flick, but a real pity. It could have been a truly remarkable sci-fi/horror flick in better hands.

u know, back then, event horizon breaks quite a number of norms. a lot flicks today have learned from that, in which if u've seen alot of horror movies lately, u'll realize there's not much special about event horizon anymore.

just like 2001 space odyssey. if u watch it now, u'd be like... meh... boring sial cerita ni... biggrin.gif.
