Foam plugs mute almost everything. I traded mine for concert/musician earplug. It has noise filter. Doesn't block everything cuts most bass and some highs. For me I felt I can hear horns better than foam plugs. Still compared to no earplug sound will felt muted.

Not for me. It was just so much more comfortable where the wind noise is drastically reduced. Mine are 3M foamies.

i bought earplugs and it arrived yesterday. Not sure if i've gotten the wrong earplugs (mack's pillosoft silicone putty earplug), but the isolation is very good. too good till i forgot to even shift to 6th gear.. The wind noise did reduce alot tho. I'm getting used to the isolation feeling. It is still quite a weird sensation for me, going to 100% road noise to like 20% road noise does feel a little eerie at times.

Wind noise can damage your hearing in the long run..

Trust me now I have selective hearing problem after almost 35 years of Riding experience.

Even when you have ultra quiet helmet like Schubert please do wear earplug especially for long highway travel.

Thats right. Even on a very quiet helmet. It is still loud, or should I say, deceptively quiet.

You are still looking at above 90-95db sustained noise/loudness even on the quietest helmets on the planet, say cruising at 110-120. Higher noise if your run faster.

Dont forget the sound levels is logarithmic. a 95db helmet and a 100db helmet is a hell big of a difference. Likewise, going from 95db@110 to 100db at 130

Anything over 70db sustained can potentially wreck your hearing over time.

So the old helmet adage is true. There are Loud Helmets, and then there are VERY loud helmets.

I too have selective hearing problem. But that I think is due to the home minister instead of the helmet as I just starting riding not 2 years ago.

Example:
Exhaust systems Noise (dB) for between stock and aftermarket:
stok - 93.8 / 6750 rpm
aftermarket - 105.5 / 6750 rpm

yeah, it looks like *only* 11.7 dB, but actually 10dB is SPL at 10x order louder already. It's just that our hearing perceives it as log scale, so 10dB macam tak kuat sangat, but is oredi 10x more power hitting the hearing systems.

The Mack's putty reduce 22dB; other Mack's reduce between 29~32dB. That's reducing sound level by 100x (20dB) to 1000x (30dB) liao.

So, a 105dB exhaust becomes 75dB exhaust (ignore the frequency range for now), is like from a noisy baby crying to toilet flush level.

Good decision to start using ear plugs, any ear plugs is better than nothing.

I am used to wearing full PPE at work. So used to all the weird sensation that comes with ear plug, not to mention coverall that makes toilet call a pain in ass.

I had been using Musician's earplugs from shopee for 3 years already, reduced the total sound by quite a significant amount, but not as much as regular earplugs and also maintains the sound quality from my Cardo relatively well. The exact link I bought from had already long expired, but these are pretty much identical from what I bought.

Great to hear that. Pun intended.

We should all enjoy safe riding but not at the cost of losing hearing.

For geniuses who says it’s dangerous riding with ear plugs, guess what? It’s even more dangerous when you are deaf. Plus you can’t *hear* the idiot in the car playing with his phone coming from behind you anyway.

Ear plugs cut off constant noises very well. Other noises are still audible. I just used it on a flight, can still hear the baby crying but the engine drone was cut significantly down.

i get it with my cf helmet especially when i wear earplugs... wondering if thats a bad thing. its not loud.. but its constant and can be annoying sometimes.

Ryan F9 even mentioned "twitchy carbon drums againsts ur ears" at 0.35 mark

Whoever said that lol

I use IEMs, can still hear my surroundings but wind noise levels definitely sees a huge drop

Also are MHR flip helmets any good? Or are there any better sub 400 options?

Flip helmets generally are very noisy. MT and MHR plenty complains.

Shoei Neotec2 kinda exception here, quiet but expensive at 3k.

Mine with Xlite Carbon not drumming, but a high pitch whistle, not sure if it's because of the windshield, or the helmet design.. tried it with another helmet brand and model also on the same bike, no whistling sound..

Depending on the design and the material used, HJC Flip tends to be ok, the downside on this is quite heavy, unless you take the higher end like RAPHA 90 which is light.. for me gold standard of a quiet flip helmet is Schubert C3Pro/C4 but then aside from the high price point, it has a shape of an egg.

My friend using MT flip up, no longer can talk to me over intercomm after 80km/h when I am using open face Jcruise.

So, your assumption (was also same as mine) was proven incorrect. biggrin.gif

I was able to comm clearly with another rider in full face helmet up to around 110km/h, but that's the fastest I ride lah so no chance to test it above 110km/h.

That friend using MT had since bought a Neotec2 biggrin.gif

Anybody got budget cam recommendation? I realize for bike I don’t need a screen or touch screen — difficult to use with gloves. If anything, need tactile buttons just to turn on and record.

What's your budget?

Why not just get a action cam and mount it on your helmet? I recommend as sjcam. Cheap and good.

Sorry but when your are riding, its better not to get distracted by having a conversation with your friends over the intercom. You need full focus and alert to ride safely.
