Not so familiar with router settings to be able to change them and know what's going to happen.  laugh.gif  but the consideration that there may be monitoring, throttling or limiting me is what's making me think of the need to get my own.
Just over a month using it, so far no disconnections but not being able to access the router settings (if the need to change anything happens, can't even change WIFI name and password now) is something can't be overlooked over the long term.
Yes the round shape, like a giant bar of soap. As it is, I don't even have access to the console, so can't change my Wifi name and password. The usual admin/admin and administrator/administrator combos don't work, and was told by customer care to contact their technicians to make the changes if needed.  mega_shok.gif

i have the same router, the username and password is below the router.

Well you can't expect much from a cheap router. ISP's tend to cut cost kaw kaw as, they know not many will keep using their supplied router. Heck even when the installer visited to my place last week to upgrade my equipments to support 800Mbps, when they saw me using ASUS router, they was clearly wow'ing fiberhome router more powerful than the asus I am using currently. Even when they see my using ZenWiFi AX Mini as my AiMesh node, they insisted me to use fiberhome as they claim, 'powerful router from tm'. Can't blame the installer as they're doing their job promoting to use tm's router. You can't expect a good UI layout or professional feature workflow from a company that milks consumer with different packaging price for the same speed.

I myself use a RT-AX53u, it's nice and all but it has it's fair share of bugs that need to be worked out

1. Out of box firmware literally has broken PPPoE, you have to sideload file to update it to get it online.
2. Status page shows 4 cores despite only having 2
3. Settings page has options for selecting USB 2 or 3 mode, which this router only has USB2 ports
4. Sometimes the FTP/SMB server hangs itself and the CPU gets stuck at 100% while not responding
5. Installing Download Master on a NTFS drive gets stuck
6. IPv6 DNS is a mess:
Router: set to Pi Hole
Dnsleaktest: Cloudflare?????
Device: says its using Maxis ISP DNS
7. one time 2.4Ghz radio just didnt work

granted this is the lowest end asus on a platform they dont use much (mediatek)

i would just buy xiaomi router on higher end one, flash to openwrt and work it out from there.

openwrt is quite pain in ass though, but that's probably because i sucked big time. i've been trying to create dual ssid with one vpn and another without vpn traffic but i still can't make it work after so much testing.

on another side note, i went TM point again asking my SWU, then they said can't offer me 300mbps for RM129, only the 300mbps for rm159 package, they will try appeal again to HQ.

besides that, seems like they quite love their own TM wifi6 router when i said oh... the cap ayam router provided by TM. they seem quite aggravated and said it's a huawei lol.

2. MediaTek MT7621A = Perhaps 2 cores 4 threads?

Oh, forgot to mention mediatek legendary issue with NAT acceleration. If you use WhatsApp, try to connect wifi for prolonged period around 3 or 4 days. Then you will encounter a strange bug where your WhatsApp call will be choppy and robotic.

Indeed, hassle to set up the router w/ openwrt. I prefer ASUS, but disable all the data collection features in the router, and opt to use custom scripts developed by independent coders. The installer said the "FiberHome" is more powerful than my current AX56U. And they said the second unit of FiberHome WiFi 6 can cover my entire house, when I was already using a pair of ZenWiFi AX Mini unit as aimesh. I informed them, just ask the PIC to refresh the system, so you don't really need to do anything as I already prepare everything. NOPEEEEEE. They still insist of installing the fiberhome lol. If they give a call to the CS, it will take roughly about 10-20 minutes, but it took nearly 30 to 40 minutes just to complete the upgrade request report. "Ini router bagus, AX1800..." In return, I said to them, "Ini router pun AX1800. Quad-core Broadcom processor, 512MiB, running on custom fw with scripts". They are speechless and asked me what processor and how it works for router. That's how 'good' the installer is. Somehow I disliked the way TM treat customers as noob. Using ASUS router not as a permanent solution, just as a temporary solution until I settle down with proper routing gear from Mikrotik.

Your unifi is ended contract or still in contract? Trying to upgrade (from 30m or 100m) or sidegrade or downgrade (from 300m+ package)?

I've never used "cap ayam" but I did once say "your toilet paper router" to the TM phone rep.

As for OpenWRT routers, perhaps GL.iNET.
They have a Shopee channel, I believe. Delivery from HK.
If I recall correctly, their current Wifi-6 router costs around RM500. Can't remember the model number, but it's nicknamed "Flint" I think.
I've used their smaller travel routers before, back when there was no coronavirus and I used to stay at hotels a lot.

Yes, that one. Wanted to edit my post to share the page, but my account is still on probation so I'm not allowed to post links yet.
Perhaps can contact the seller and ask for availability if interested. It's quite a recent model, so definitely not discontinued.

GL.iNet is probably our best bet for pre-installed open source WRT routers, since it's Shopee based. If you purchase a DD-WRT/Tomato pre-flashed Asus or Netgear model from somewhere like Flashrouters, you'll probably have to deal with custom paperwork to release the delivery, because our country has some weird rule pertaining to imported devices containing wireless radios, plus the cost after currency conversion and delivery will we much higher. For Asus models, it's probably better to buy a Merlin supported model locally anyway.

Not sure about local businesses selling pre-flashed WRT. I think there was someone offering those on this foum's marketplace once, but that was some time ago.

Dont think so, cause the CPU usage graph goes absolutely nuts when the CPU is maxed out when the ftp/smb server crashes.

It just keeps cycling between all 4 "cores" maxing em out 1 by one, sometimes going to weird in-betweens like 80/11/9/1

Luckily I don't use WhatsApp calls much, and I reboot router daily.

Yup, definitely the same CPU cycling pattern with my Asus AC2600 that use MediaTek MT7621A.

*Note: disable the USB/HDD spin down functionality*

Anyone got a weird email from oss.support@tm.com.my about Invitation to Participate in TM Survey by INSiGhT Team ? hmm.gif

Already expired since 2019.

Upgrading from 30m.

Guess that should be a win for TM but seems like they are playing the tough guy game.

Yeah, this one.

Very surprising since the questionnaire asked for our email in the beginning.
Make one wonder, since they already have our email address, why in the world they ask for it again? confused.gif

Not sure wanna answer or not. laugh.gif

I tried answering that survey and i can tell you it's about smart devices they ask about in that survey

Maybe related to smart device bundle deals like tv, laptops etc

Previously that already have lg tv and acer laptop bundle deal but tm might use that survey for deciding what smart device they should introduce next

user posted image

Edit: smart device bundle also now available for unifi mobile

Guys, just installed mine with 300Mbps unifi package and immediately headache for that.

My house is double storey, and due to constraint, i have to route the fiber cable through the roof and put the router on 2nd floor living room.

Problem is, we need 5Ghz to fully utilise 300Mbps (even 100Mbps), and downstair can't receive 5GHz at all.

Can anyone recommend any good router + mesh system that can cater for full house 5GHz coverage? Budget is not an issue here.

Thanks.

Almost always better to run a wired backhaul rather than pure mesh if you willing to run cable.
