wat we need is a player tat can decode the HD audio, and an amp tat does PCM, kaw tim, correct?
anyway, is 7.1 tat important?
u know, after scouting @ AVS forum, i be confuse and lost than ever... but i somehow manage to grasp few things.
as for ur Q, 661 definitely cant decode TrueHD and DTS HD MA.
As we know, TrueHD, DTS HD MA capable receiver only decodes these HD audio in bitstream (bit-to-bit). Currently there is no blu-ray player could bitstream DTS-HD MA, except PCM (thru HDMI or MultiChannel Analog out). DTS HD MA players that could bitstream it is Pana BD50 which hell's knows when it will be launched.
So most blu-ray (including our beloved PS3) sends this TrueHD in PCM via HDMI. (no DTS HD MA yet, god's knows when it is). So if the player send the audio as PCM to the receiver, TrueHD light will not appear.
So, 661 able to handle this PCM audio and able to matrix it to 6.1/7.1 and apply processing (PL IIx, DSP, EQ etc etc). plus we could get Yamaha's famous DSP processing as well. Plus, DAC in 661 is Burr-brown, correct me if im wrong.
Even onkyo 605 able to decodes TrueHD DTS HD MA (only in bitstream), it cant apply any processing on PCM audio. 705 can.
hope this helps.
as for 5.1 or 7.1, on my experience it quite impressive. Surrounds sound more depth.
