I know HK follow Chinese script. Well... obviously. Their Cantonese words have direct a counterpart in Mandarin, like 你, is 'ni' in Mandarin and 'nei' in Cantonese. But our Cantonese, we say lei. Why are we so different?

Another example:

Mandarin: De
HK: Dik
Local: Gei

Mandarin: Dui
HK: Deoi
Local: Ngam

UPDATE:

Apparently I am wrong as pointed out by a ktard. These words have a direct counterpart in Mandarin, see answer 5.

的 is Dik
嘅 is Ge (correct)

对Is Duii
啱 is ngam (correct)

/K answers as simplied below:

1. Influenced by other dialects

2. The words we use are slangs, which HK also use. But we don't know the formal words, which HK knows and use

3. These are 'Lazy' pronunciation, as the language evolved.

4. KL more different from Hongkie. But Ipoh/Sabah closer to HK

5. The 'slangs' are actually found in Mandarin words. It is just that they are rarely used in Mandarin but have more meaning in Canto.

Both of your examples geh & ngam are also used in hk la... that's their slang. Dik & dui are formal only. Lei is also how hk ppl pronounce you both lei & nei can be used.

Because Cantonese never abandoned the ancient tones, causing the language to be much more complex.

This reminds me of this video. Turn on captions for English:

A lot of words used these days there has the "lazy" pronunciations, though. They stopped using the "ng" sound in front.

Like "ngam" becomes "am" and so on. Although this is catching on here as well due to TV influence. We used to do it correctly.

Can think of it as how scholars are studying Korean and Japanese to learn how ancient Chinese pronounce their words. When it was borrowed over, the pronunciations stuck but Chinese kept evolving. Same like the Cantonese here. Some of it has been stuck from 1800s but Cantonese has continued evolving in China and Hong Kong, but TV shows has been synchronising us, though.

Since I have roots from HK and visit 2 to 3 times a year (before fcuking COVID19 stopped all that), my nephews and nieces ensure my Cantonese is up to the mark - kids are brutal... no give face. Wrong word, wrong pronunciation, they’ll rip you apart hahaha.

FYI Cantonese spoken in HK is also different from Guangzhou even though they are just a few hours apart by road.
Likewise, Foshan Cantonese is a bit different from GZ.

In M'sia, Ipoh Cantonese is also diff from the rest of the country.

Same like English spoken in London, Liverpool, Scotland, Wales etc are all different. It's called an "accent".

"kok" could be derived from Hakka or Hokkien. Hakka or Hokkien words have slipped into Cantonese in Malaysia is nothing new.

Again, both are understandable for me. You ain't no gonna use "kok" in HK.

HK: Deoi
Local: Ngam

/K answers as simplied below:

1. Influenced by other dialects

2. The words we use are slangs, which HK also use. But we don't know the formal words, which HK knows and use

3. These are 'Lazy' pronunciation, as the language evolved.

4. KL more different from Hongkie. But Ipoh/Sabah closer to HK

I know what you mean. More and more "ngoi sang yan", ppl from neighbouring provinces have invaded Guangdong to find jobs, study etc displacing the original Cantonese who gave up and moved to places like Foshan, Zhuhai, Zhongsan etc.

China sometimes can be regionalism if you get the drift. Chinese ppl speak thousands of languages. Every regions, every cities, every towns, every counties, every villages speak different languages (figuratively speaking).

Go there, take a taxi and go to the shops and speak Canto. I did that. They replied back in Canto.

About 50% or so are native Guangdong yan and is still speaking Cantonese in varying fluency, another 50% or so are non-native Guangdong aka some decades ago they were migrant workers, etc.

There are plenty of half Canto and half other regions offsprings. Their Cantonese fluency is based on how much they exposed to their Cantonese father side and family.

Just think about Penang ppl who moved to KL for years. Or the Hokkiens who born and breed in KL.

Some examples:

SNH48 - Xuyang and Zhao Yue are half Canto and half other regions offsprings. Both their mothers are non-GD.

Xuyang can speak Canto, but on rare occasion. She grown up in GD and exposed to Canto.

Her father @ 25:40

SNH48 - Zhao Yue grown up in her mother's province, so she didn't expose to Cantonese at all. Her father is Guangdong yan. Notice her name "Yue"? "Yue" means Canto. It's a telltale sign. I think she mentioned about it in one of her stuff.
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Zhao Yue was in her father's hometown in GD for annual reunion. Ppl in the background speak Canto or Hakka for a little bit.

GNZ48 - Huang ChuYin
100% fluent in Cantonese. Average native Guangdong yan family I guess.

With her sister

GNZ48
Guangdong radio and TV are still standing and exist, but you probably do not know. ASTRO used to have GDTV. Even the Taiwanese student in GD can speak Canto.

In China every 10-20km, the accent/slang will vary. Village to village, town to town, city to city.......

If u watch old HK movie & compare it with current HK movie, the accent/slang also vary.

Some of them speak sub-Cantonese. The further you are away from Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong, the higher chance they speak sub-Cantonese (non-standard).

Do ppl understand what is Standard Cantonese?

IT IS CALLED LAZY TONE:

https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/4945720?author=Meis

Many decades ago, the elders in HK used "nei". The younger gen use "lei" bcoz of LAZY TONE aka tongue failed.
How do I know? The younger gen of HK asked and did research on it, the elders in HK. I watched a docu of it.

Using "lei" means you are a nub.

We know the TV had no swearing due to self-censorship. The best way to learn is from casual conversations. Live streaming on twitch, live streaming and Youtube videos from HK gamers and videos about HK politics are the best.

Examples:

Gaming
https://www.twitch.tv/ankgaminghk
https://www.twitch.tv/mochi125

Anti-Beijing, pro-opposition, dis-info, fake news, fear mongering, right wing. I do not recommend anyone to learn 'truth' from this places but to learn Canto is OK.

at the end of the day Malaysia Canto more pure because it is stuck in the time when we first got our migrants over

HK canto already changed quite a bit due to PRC influence
*
The bolded part = nope

Penang Hokkien, TW Hokkien, Fujian Hokkien. They are like 99% same, except some slangs and whatnot. There are some vids about that on Youtube.

Taiwanese in Fujian PRC, speaking Hokkien
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4mqTd_eiXIQ

All develop based on their own regions and local customs/cultures. That's why we have some Malay words in our Chinese languages, e.g., "mata" = police
In fact, I speak Canto-lish (Canto-English) most of the time, especially with my old man in serious conversation LOL.

If u watch the previous vid that I posted, you can clearly see the slight differences of HK Canto and Guangdong Canto.

HK Canto - 飲品 VS Guangdong Canto - 飲料

The object is different despite referring to the same thing.

HKer wrote this:
廣東人明知飲料同飲尿同音,都中要叫飲料。點解唔學香港人讀飲品?

HK Canto 氣水 - VS Guangdong Canto - 碳酸飲料

The object is different despite referring to the same thing.

Also from the same dude:
點解廣東人講野甘複雜?碳酸飲料,以爲上化學堂。直接叫有氣就得啦。清楚明瞭。
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BJhSQHnu7s...aZ5MbvSJ4AaABAg

And also, Guangdong Canto - 加冰块
I think in Malaysia, we just call it 加雪 biggrin.gif

Hi ts
I speak hokkien
Penang speak hokkien johor speak hokkien and Taiwan speak hokkien
When a dialect said Cantonese travels aboard
Some essense will be preserve and some will be lost
Language in said origin would also evolve
Losing some of it essense which were preserved else where maybe be gone already

So when you balik malatsia
Ecentho all sprka hokkien it differs from one another

Yhetefote when you liste Ln to penang and johor hokkien, it sounds like 2 different dialect
Just like the malay
Despite being in same country.
Tell seremban to speak to kelate, it spike speaking Dutch to an English man and hope the German understands it

Work in HK b4 during project, my Cantonese is quite ok lah but used to KL style.. Just recalled several words used:-

La La (seafood) =Hin..
Photocopy = Yeng Yan.. Not fok yan.

Also HK accent they would stress on tone, like singing song. Msian Cantonese accent is rather flat.. Too much influence from BM, no tone. Also the way they pronounce English words is slightly different n the context they slot in English word is when no Cantonese word can describe better. Unlike Msian Canto, suka2 slot in English word like rojak especially Msian English ed speaker.

If u r Sharp enough, no matter how hard local DJ speak/copy Cantonese HK slang, u can tell the difference just from intonation. Unless they had worked in HK for at least few years.

It is normal in lanuguage to be not exacly the same in different regions. Even Cantonese in Ipoh is slightly different with KL. We have British English, American English or Australian English. Swiss German almost cannot be understood by Northen Germans.

1% different is not big deal. You are over-exaggerating. And it's not that hard to exclude those alien words and re-correct it.

It is no big deal to be slightly different and why is there a need for "pure" Cantonese to begin with? It is just fucking day to day language among the locals, you are not going to need correct grammmar to pass exam or publish articles in international journal.

Not pure, just standardization... Standard Cantonese. I'm all about unifying ppl. Not dividing and not making unnecessary division.

Once a upon a time, there is a foreigner who said, "You do not need 1000 different dialects just to refer a spoon." Even a foreigner, an outsider laughed at us. He laughed at our weakness.

Why do you think Lee Kuan Yew dislike Singlish and criticize it in his books? You should read his stuff where he was puzzled by the Pacific Islander's English in one of his massage sessions.

There is a fine line between formal and informal speech. I would stay away from "rojak" in a formal speech.

Do you not know there are Sub-Cantonese languages/dialects existed in GD and Guangxi? You will pull your hair out when you encountered one.

And which is the "standard" Cantonese or any other dialect? It is only barely possible for lingua franca like English or Mandarin because there is influential authority like government or media (BBC English) which even then still subject to variation due to influnce of local culture or community. Cantonese? Nobody is interested in standardisation when it is not really a lingua franca in any way. People just converse in local context. It is different story for major language as you want to speak to international audience.

Ultimately, there will be localisation or "rojak" language in any part of the world, a great example will be Swiss German. As long as it is in informal context, there is really no utility to force people to change it.

Language is tool. Good tool, you keep it. Useless tool, you throw it out. Part of human evolution.

A language must serve 2 purposes: Culture and economy. Meet these 2 requirements and it will flourish.

In the old days, the Cantonese dominated the KL region. They built lots of stuff, including Chinese schools and Jalan Loke Yew. They are also the major group. All Chinese groups in KL agreed to made Cantonese as a lingua franca.

Now fast forward, who is the dominant force? Mandarin speaking in across Malaysia is a thing. Clearly all Chinese parents have acknowledged that it is important to "reconnect" the past and the Rise of China. In the same time, we didn't abandon English because we still see it as an important lingua franca.

They all are related to culture and economy.
Watching English TV shows. English speaking office environment, especially big multi-national corps. Etc., etc. You get the drill.

I even joked on that. HK's suffering is someone else joy.

HK needs to fix the land price. And then they are good to go. Look at Singaporean and German housing.
GD local gov't should help them as well; e.g., HKers who work in GD, get tax break or something. Gain some good positive points.
Almost everyone in SG laughed at HK since the riot, radical movement in last year.

HK is too capitalist. Little that people know that SG has decent "social program".

Not long ago, CY of HK tried to implement left leaning policies.

The capitalist class, upper class, liberal intellectual people (like Chip Tsao 曹捷) hated CY for his people's oriented policies, left leaning policies. He gave too much "social welfare" to the people. CY's "eat the rich" policy was his down fall. Now HK ppl regretted themselves for being brainwashed by the yellow camp and Apple News. After the last election in Dec 2019, the blue camp KOL scene rises like crazy.

if about the property ,actually the biggest evil there is their own govt, cos the govt is biggest and de factor properti developer by control land resources, a tiny piece land open auction for tenth billions, so build bird cage lo, and big developer needs to pay high auction fee as political subserviency to govt, yes govt ask them to bid start in high high price one you need to belive it, then govt have high income and developer develop bird cage skyrises offer to hk sakai tat have no other choice (but to buy)

after 2000 hk govt get money from squeeze and limit land resource there, bcos they start loose economic position as toilet janitor money collector for entry to china, especially after china enter into wto, thats why things are too expensive, so if later someone say i want to relax the land resources of cos those previous one will sound cos they will loss life savings, and the money gotten is channeled into mainland hand by some funny project, example build a mrt station cost 90billion ringgit, a fake island cost 300billion ringit, airport 400billion, its squeeze its islander to apease higher up and end up skinny and poorer and in return rely more on the boss where it given up its money, its a vicious cycle set in place since 2000, only after 2006 that hk is economically insignificant to china , before that hk economic output measures around 1/8 of china and 1/3 of pearl river delta. for a small island that is something

and since china open up hk economic role lastime as toilet entry fee collector is no more, so their govt turn more to land as resources and it attract mainlanders also to invest for diffrent way of rules , at least till 2007 dissident in china can seat safely in hk, its the differences that let riches love it and that atttraction, but now even the hk govt want to toe and follow to beijing wishes mean rules are same and there is very little rule of law especially political things so nobody wants to go far away to a place of same rule, so hk is very fast degrading themselve to second line city in china, it got no economic specialty and now it los political specialty, it bcome just another chinese city, those govt head that sell hk is their islanders true traitor (but to beijing is patriot) , but that is hk people problem and now cannot lansi ody they are commies now, now is transition generation so u see some noises, old class fading away in vain protest, later when transition is complete, hk is just another china city, and filled with people that have grudge to govt but only talk in coded messages privately and keep heads low like now in other cities, the subserviency is completed, hk as once pearl of asia is no more it seem inevitable now

toilet janitor fee collector (hk) is useless people, yet bcos he (hk) sit there he collect fee (business hub and facility) and feel bcome superior than others when others want to pee (enter china). but once the toilet (china) got two door the fee collector suddenly no more able to collect fee and left with dunno what to do, that is hk govt in 2000

QUOTE(botlife @ Dec 7 2020, 02:25 PM)
if about the property ,actually the biggest evil there is their own govt, cos the govt is biggest and de factor properti developer by control land resources, a tiny piece land open auction for tenth billions, so build bird cage lo, and big developer needs to pay high auction fee as political subserviency to govt, yes govt ask them to bid start in high high price one you need to belive it, then govt have high income and developer develop bird cage skyrises offer to hk sakai tat have no other choice (but to buy)

after 2000 hk govt get money from squeeze and limit land resource there, bcos they start loose economic position as toilet janitor money collector for entry to china, especially after china enter into wto, thats why things are too expensive, so if later someone say i want to relax the land resources of cos those previous one will sound cos they will loss life savings, and the money gotten is channeled into mainland hand by some funny project, example build a mrt station cost 90billion ringgit, a fake island cost 300billion ringit, airport 400billion, its squeeze its islander to apease higher up and end up skinny and poorer and in return rely more on the boss where it given up its money, its a vicious cycle set in place since 2000, only after 2006 that hk is economically insignificant to china , before that hk economic output measures around 1/8 of china and 1/3 of pearl river delta. for a small island that is something

and since china open up hk economic role lastime as toilet entry fee collector is no more, so their govt turn more to land as resources and it attract mainlanders also to invest for diffrent way of rules , at least till 2007 dissident in china can seat safely in hk, its the differences that let riches love it and that atttraction, but now even the hk govt want to toe and follow to beijing wishes mean rules are same and there is very little rule of law especially political things so nobody wants to go far away to a place of same rule, so hk is very fast degrading themselve to second line city in china, it got no economic specialty and now it los political specialty, it bcome just another chinese city, those govt head that sell hk is their islanders true traitor (but to beijing is patriot) , but that is hk people problem and now cannot lansi ody they are commies now, now is transition generation so u see some noises, old class fading away in vain protest, later when transition is complete, hk is just another china city, and filled with people that have grudge to govt but only talk in coded messages privately and keep heads low like now in other cities, the subserviency is completed, hk as once pearl of asia is no more it seem inevitable now

toilet janitor fee collector (hk) is useless people, yet bcos he (hk) sit there he collect fee (business hub and facility) and feel bcome superior than others when others want to pee (enter china). but once the toilet (china) got two door the fee collector suddenly no more able to collect fee and left with dunno what to do, that is hk govt in 2000

icac under commie land is tool to get rid of whoever not align with power only and as a show case of "rule of law", see, got law and got rule, civilised one good one

if here bijan is bad, there is 100x worst in term of money figure and how far extreme measures could go

lee ks definitely receive alot of goodies from british, tats why most retired hk governor are directors in his company, leeks also receive alot goodies from mainland, that is real help launch him into tycoon status challenging the original british taipans, his first big property project is backed by citic of china. now china dont like him so cant see any more mention of his link to citic on any mandrin website, lastime honeymoon mention he, the huoyingtung, dengdanrui etc six tycoons of hk is protege of citic and example of asian trumping the whites, and huoyingdung role is smuggling of banned goodies in 60s and 70s especialy to guangdong govt before china turn sour with ussr and hug american

without political or economic specialty hk is inevitably turn into just another city in china, its much evident in popular culture like movie music etc, cantoness song now bcome second tier to mandrin already and their tv show like those once china kampung style giving weird outdate feel, whoever selling its political n economic specialty is real traitor to the little island there but not our problem, we not hker

I learn that there is Cantonese that can be translated into Mandarin (national language) and Cantonese that is not available in Mandarin but carrying the same meaning
Example I can think of I want go toilet.

In Mandarin
Wo yao qi cesuo

formal for toilet - xi shou jian

Cantonese equivalent
Ngo you Hui ci so

Formal - sai sau gan

But actual cantonese said
Ngo you Hui Mao ci

The word Mao ci is not available in Mandarin and only Cantonese speaker can understand . Hong Kong/Guangzhou true Cantonese speaker community will be using this kind of cantonese word that is not available in Mandarin. In Malaysia, since our education is based on Mandarin, we rarely use this kind of word "mao ci" to describe toilet and we usually use ci so

Also word "ci hang" is not available in mandarin but Hong Kong and Guangzhou will understand it i guess. Proverb "ci kap sin lei wan ci hang" is Cantonese only proverb ,no Mandarin proverb for this.

I'm sure in Guangzhou, there will be people saying "ngo you Hui ci hang", but it would sound very alien for us in Malaysia. Even for me I would have never use this or heard this in my life.

I read this thread with great interest as I too am learning my father's language. I regret in my younger and more rebellious years, I just wanted to be educated in English. Now I am just playing catch up. My dad was from Guangdong, to be specific, Luodeng (Luo Ding in Mandarin). Anyway what I want to find out is this sentence:

食 飽 先 然 後 睇 戲
sik baau sin jin hau tai hei

Thing is, Malaysians don't normally say in such a way. They will probably say

"sik baau sin cin tai hei"

What I want to know is 'cin'. Is the written '前'? Thus

食 飽 先 前 睇 戲

Is this sentence correct? 前 is usually pronounced 'cin' but in the sentence above it would normally be pronounced ching? Or maybe it's my father's village pronunciation?

Cantonese is interesting in that the written, spoken and formal is very different and there are a lot of characters that mean nothing in Mandarin. Those really keen to know more about this can look up:

https://www.quora.com/What-are-the-unique-C...nese-characters

Hong Kong Cantonese lessons with native speakers can be found here:

Interested to know if yak (eat) is true cantonese word or it's just rural guandong dialect only old people use? I never see anyone using it in Hong Kong movie as well.

My grandpa use this word . But only heard it from him and no one else. Yet people understand him when he said yak.

Yak mei yeh?

My friend's dad use to say 'yak fan' too. Interestingly, the grandad will say 'bha fan' (like saying 'climbing'). They happened to be from Sei Wui (四會).

Here is an entry from Cantonese Sheik regarding 'yak' (喫). It means to eat.

'bha fan' = using the chopsticks to push the rice from the bowl into your mouth
You can also use it on watermelon.

We use plate and it is stick to the table, spoon and fork nowadays.

'bha fan' = older words

'yak fan' = newer words

And not to forget, 'hek fan' = older words

That's how I see it.

Nowadays is 'sik fan'... eat rice

It comes from "pasar" straight forward. As for Malay and Indon cultures, they are over-lapped. Similar as Yuan Dynasty and Mongol Empire/history.

So just laugh when Indon ppl bash Malay for copying when they start the internet war.

Even within Peninsular Malaysia it's different la.
I guess it depends on which cities the diaspora originated. Back in the old days, Chinese migrants to South East Asia tended to congregate in places they could find people from their home town.
North Peninsular Malaysia had a lot of people from Zhangzhou, compared to southern and central Peninsular Malaysia where there were more from Quanzhou and Amoy.

For example, egg in Penang hokkien is "nui", but southern Malaysian hokkien it's "n'eng" or something liddat.

I'm not so sure what Sarawak Hokkien is like but likely it should be similar to either one of the two major varieties above.

She is born in Tianjin (Northern region; near Beijing). Moved to HK at 17 yo. Work in TVB for 8 years.

https://www.instagram.com/snowybai/

You can easily spot her accent.

I also know the 1st gen immigrants from Shanghai to HK, many who are tailors, had strong accent too.

It is similar to the 1st gen of Latins, Mexicans who are off the boat to USA. The 2nd gen speaks better English than the 1st gen, obviously.

Still, no one beats the diva Faye Wong on non-native speaking Canto. She is considered as one of the quick learners of Canto.

HK pro use English

Do you notice HK movies are using 'ooi' recently rather than 'yiu' that was used previously just like how Malaysian Cantonese is spoken?

Why the change? No more Mandarinised?

In HK, the informal or colloquial is slightly different than Standard Chinese. Go watch their gaming live streams.

But in formal or professional writing, they tend to use Standard Chinese, much like in TW.

As for script or writing, HK and TW use traditional Chinese and PRC, SG, MY use simplified Chinese.

From HK but work in GD for ages. I think him and his family settled down there.

A bit of stereotype... but yea.

I once spoke to a Singaporean on this. He joked that Singaporeans have learned how to differentiate different regions of Putonghua or Mandarin speakers. He was right on. Since then, I can tell who is from what region based on his Mandarin accent. smile.gif

The Northeast or Beijing accent is infamous for its "er" at the back of the words.

Adik, Jawa Aceh Sulawesi also loghat (in your word, tribal dialect) but still Bahasa Indonesia is main language.

Same same with Kelante Terengganu Loghat Utara but still Bahada Melayu is main language.

Ditto.

The infamous Kelantanese.

There are, basically, thousands of languages in PRC. Most ppl do not know it. Every region has its own languages. Call whatever you like, dialect or language.

Basically, they are born with at least 2 languages ~ regional language and Mandarin Chinese. If someone is not speaking 2 languages, it means his elders have given up on it.

Nope. HK Cantonese language is NOT contaminated by Shanghainese words/elements. But I have seen older HK Shanghainese tailors speak Cantonese with heavy accent.
The Shanghainese tailors moved to HK in droves back then. Shanghainese tailor is the father of modern Cheongsam.

They all integrated into HK culture and Cantonese culture.

There is a street in HK called Hokkien Street.

Niki Chow has Shanghainese ancestry. Alex Fong has Yunnanese ancestry.
Wikipedia used to include their "ancestry" entries... Jackie Chan, Daniel Wu. The trolls, anti-PRC elements, yellow camp of HK are deleting it. They want "localization".

Nope. It is part of Malay language. Professional terms is Austronesian language.
Just like Cantonese Chinese, Mandarin Chinese and many more are part of Chinese language. Professional terms is Sino-Tibetan language.

Additional info on corrupted Malaysian Cantonese:

Our cantonese is 1900s level.

Hong Kong cantonese has diverted and bloosomed from there, they learn cantonese in school, you think their cantonese not progress ?

whereas us, we learn cantonese from our parents, no official education. Those from chinese school use their existing learning to translate and use for local tv programs.

this is the reason why HK cantonese so far ahead of ours.

Also not every chinese here is cantonese, you try to speak to penang/kedah/johor/klang lang in cantonese lah, you think they understand you ?

reminds me of a lenglui back then in school, her canto is really hongkie style canto, but it didnt cross my mind then and thought maybe because she watch too much hongkie drama.

last month i happen to bump into her again in some restaurant sitting a table away but didnt go say hi lah, just pandang tepi2 only. no longer as lenglui as back then, body abit more meat, got one kid. but she is speaking in the same distinct hongkie canto with her kid. that intonation, that choice of words that isnt quite malaysian canto slang. gave me the jitters

Because ours is mixed with Malay + english compared to theirs that mixed with mandarin.

Example, I say mata (police) but they call it geng-chat. Some that mixed more with mandarin speaking wont call Jing-cha, and Gong-an, or Gong-On. (same like security guard. We call seh-kiu, they called it bou-on)

We call money Lui, they call it Chin. We call pineapple Wong-Lai, but they called it Boh-Lo.

Just somewhat different from translation. As long can campur can d. Even soy sauce also. We call See-Yau, they call Sang-Chau, or Jiong-Yao.

No formal cantonese education unlike in HK, study in schools, and language regulated.

Ours are different because we have mixed with other dialects and languages here. Even our Mandarin is different compared to Taiwan. Met someone from Kaohsiung before I had no idea she was talking about guava fruit she sounded so weird hard to understand some of her words.

U should ignore the goddamn title of this thread. I have warned TS about it but he didn't listen.

If u can understand the stuff in the vids that I posted, you are good with Standard Cantonese Chinese language.

They are basically 99% the same thing and mutually intelligible.

There is a vid about Taiwanese speaking Hokkien on the streets/shops in Fujian Province, PRC, and both of them can understand each other.
Penang Hokkien, KL Hokkien, Taiwan Hokkien, Fujian Hokkien are mutually intelligible. As long as you drop your local slangs and shets, stick to the Standard, then you are good.

Ourss is call "parrot canton" ......

Ask yourself this few things first ....

1) Is your parents from Guangdong? GuangXi ?

2) Who you learn your canton from? HK TV drama and movies? Nanny ? Parents ?

3) What other language you know?

Most of us especially 3rd gen learn cantonese from TV, while the older generation some from nanny. In a lot of situation TV base canton is a more formal canton, while local give a much more local slang to it.

Much like Bahasa Malaysia on TV is formal while kelantanese and rempit totally different slang to them.

We are called parrot canton because we mimic the learning trough TV and not from a formal teacher or directly from parents that comes from those region. On top of that we introduce our own slang into what we learn, hence why ours are different from them.

我是马来西亚人,以前的我崇拜美国,向往西方国家,以为美国是世界警察,去营救世界,以为美国是大好人,而认为中国是霸道野蛮的国家,自从有互联网的讯息,我渐渐了解真实情况,我开始讨厌西方国家尤其是美国,我甚至不再看美国的电影,根本不想去西方国家旅行,也不再看西方的新闻,可能你们觉得我很偏激,但我真的看到美国人的虚伪就想作呕。

Try having IT technical conversation between HK, GHZ and KL

You'll be having 8 ears syndrom. All the english term has been converted to canto.
The simplier one like harddisk is understandable but when come to RAID, Fiber Optic, Bladeserver...etc
Need to read back the minutes meeting(English) to know what happening
