QUOTE(Zeliard @ Apr 19 2020, 10:21 PM) I'm from Ipoh "kok" could be derived from Hakka or Hokkien. Hakka or Hokkien words have slipped into Cantonese in Malaysia is nothing new.The only main difference is cent. We use chean. Kl uses kok. Eg 10c. Yat chean. Yat kok. Again, both are understandable for me. You ain't no gonna use "kok" in HK. This post has been edited by Meis: Mar 5 2023, 03:03 AM |

QUOTE(Solar Calendar @ Apr 19 2020, 11:05 PM) China sometimes can be regionalism if you get the drift. Chinese ppl speak thousands of languages. Every regions, every cities, every towns, every counties, every villages speak different languages (figuratively speaking).Go there, take a taxi and go to the shops and speak Canto. I did that. They replied back in Canto. About 50% or so are native Guangdong yan and is still speaking Cantonese in varying fluency, another 50% or so are non-native Guangdong aka some decades ago they were migrant workers, etc. There are plenty of half Canto and half other regions offsprings. Their Cantonese fluency is based on how much they exposed to their Cantonese father side and family. Just think about Penang ppl who moved to KL for years. Or the Hokkiens who born and breed in KL. Some examples: SNH48 - Xuyang and Zhao Yue are half Canto and half other regions offsprings. Both their mothers are non-GD. Xuyang can speak Canto, but on rare occasion. She grown up in GD and exposed to Canto. Her father @ 25:40 » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « @ 8:56 » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « SNH48 - Zhao Yue grown up in her mother's province, so she didn't expose to Cantonese at all. Her father is Guangdong yan. Notice her name "Yue"? "Yue" means Canto. It's a telltale sign. I think she mentioned about it in one of her stuff. » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « Zhao Yue was in her father's hometown in GD for annual reunion. Ppl in the background speak Canto or Hakka for a little bit. » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « GNZ48 - Huang ChuYin 100% fluent in Cantonese. Average native Guangdong yan family I guess. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPNn...n8MqkeOv_8yTdfl With her sister GNZ48 Guangdong radio and TV are still standing and exist, but you probably do not know. ASTRO used to have GDTV. Even the Taiwanese student in GD can speak Canto. Go to bilibili.com and search for it. This post has been edited by Meis: Dec 3 2020, 02:31 PM |

QUOTE(ymc2303 @ Apr 20 2020, 12:16 AM) Some of them speak sub-Cantonese. The further you are away from Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong, the higher chance they speak sub-Cantonese (non-standard).Do ppl understand what is Standard Cantonese? http://phonemica.net/ http://phonemica.net/entry?mid=543746312bd...782aad0&story=0 This post has been edited by Meis: May 21 2022, 05:07 PM |

IT IS CALLED LAZY TONE: https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/4945720?author=Meis Many decades ago, the elders in HK used "nei". The younger gen use "lei" bcoz of LAZY TONE aka tongue failed. How do I know? The younger gen of HK asked and did research on it, the elders in HK. I watched a docu of it. Using "lei" means you are a nub. This post has been edited by Meis: Apr 20 2020, 12:37 PM |

We know the TV had no swearing due to self-censorship. The best way to learn is from casual conversations. Live streaming on twitch, live streaming and Youtube videos from HK gamers and videos about HK politics are the best.
Examples: Gaming https://www.twitch.tv/ankgaminghk https://www.twitch.tv/mochi125 Anti-Beijing, pro-opposition, dis-info, fake news, fear mongering, right wing. I do not recommend anyone to learn 'truth' from this places but to learn Canto is OK. https://www.youtube.com/user/D100HK https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSJ7F-9d351iCvla2IzAQoQ/ Pro-Beijing, debunking the yellow or black ribbons. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPNn...mIkRyB12Lt52aiH https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvlBe-TQfjLFINSSYQt9Tjg https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFfLWSnUCblI4Lpsph7H1lA https://www.youtube.com/user/albertip/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkFRfv77kNA This post has been edited by Meis: May 15 2022, 04:59 AM |
