Most of the airports are about the same, which limits to 3 hours.
In order to enjoy your time in the airport, you have to online check-in + arrive early (3 hours) and immediately drop your bag once the counter is open.
Before middle east, Sg, KL, BKK and HK are the major transit hubs between eastern and western countries.
Most of the long haul flight only have sufficient fuel from Europe to SEA countries.
With the rise of middle east, they are now direct competing with SEA as transfer hubs, where they are geographically superior than SEA / HK especially for USA east coast cities.
Only until recent years, we now have super long haul flight from direct from Sg to USA / NZ to USA.
Hence, all these transit hubs are providing excellent service to attract travelers around the world to take their flight / spend in their airport / city.
Of course KLIA is out of the picture for the time being.
Frankfurt airport is another excellent airport, where you can have early check-in while flying Lufthansa (if not mistaken, certain SA flights as well).
You may even check-in from train station if you are boarding the train from nearby cities!
The train is part of the "flight", you can include them during your booking.

Each airport, and each airline has their own policy regarding check in, and bag drops....
Most airports adopts the standard policy of 3 hrs bag drop before flights....Changi stands out as one that encourages transit passengers to visit....they have many extra services to facilitate that ...
In the old days they have the Singapore stopover holidays for as cheap as USD1....they still have the stopover tours...the left luggage charges are cheap.... efficient public transport right to the terminals....
AND.....the long standing policy of early bag drop.....
All with one single simple aim..... encourage you to go downtown and spend money...lol
Yes, Changi is one of the best airport in the world, if not the best.

In some destinations, the airlines MUST ensure compliance with immigration rules.... including processing a valid visa, and/or a return/onward booking....failing which the airlines get fined if passenger arrives and gets turned back.......
So it's necessary.... where were you going?.....
Exactly, especially when you purchase / redeem return ticket separately.
