i'm pretty sure sg grads are working in their country instead of msia. Anyway, I think a doctor should have passion for his job and studies. I'll have to agree with limeuu that it is a bit sad to see some ppl 'forced' into med just because of pressure from parents.

well right and wrong...its recognized by the Msians n the Australian Medical Association but the Sg's MA has not recognized it yet coz monash malaysia hasnt produced any grads yet....the pioneer batch of students are still 1 year away from graduation, but i think Sg will recognize it when the grads are out.....its kinda weird if the Aussies recognize it but Sg doesnt.... shakehead.gif  shakehead.gif

anyway good for us....Sg grads working for us instead of the other way around!!!  flex.gif  flex.gif  flex.gif

btw wanna raise some issue here ah....what u guys think about the medical system here.....like the ministry of health said they are working on a public-funded insurance cover thing, like the Medicare / NHS system....but no news bout it till now....and i think we should hav that coz for average folks.....seeing a 'normal doctor' / GP is getting more n more costly.... unsure.gif  unsure.gif  unsure.gif

recognition of medical degrees is by the malaysian medical COUNCIL (mmc), and the Australian medical COUNCIL(amc)......and yes, the smc.....

there is nothing weird about oz recognising monash msia mbbs, as it is an australian uni degree and nobody will pay the kind of fees they charge otherwise, and smc NOT recognising it, as they do not recognise some oz mbbs anyway........

i don't think there will be many, or even any, sporean doing mbbs in monash msia.....

well...u cant just say sth if u dun even know it... there is actually....im not sure how many but im from monash so i know... and im just saying...if the sg ppl din get recognized so they hav to either work in aus or in msia...coz usually its the other way around...msians go over to sg to work....

well its just weird how the smc (sorry bout the sma mistake) didnt recognize it coz i thought the amc would be stricter in its regulations...anyway u know any aus med skool degrees thats not recognized by the smc?? hmm.gif

I'm just wondering guys, but for those of you who are studying medicine now..

What subjects did you take during A-Levels?

Would Chem+Bio+Physics+Maths be a good choice?

perfect choice, if you can handle 4 principles.......but most unis only need and consider 3p's, so can drop physics or biology..........if fall back plan includes engineering, physics is mandatory.....

dunno, but it will be different from 2009 intake, as melbourne will then be a graduate entry programme.......at best, they will do like uq, only open for those who already have a degree, or stay back another year in imu for a b.med sc. degree first.......

The actual number is not the most important thing. The issue now is WHY and HOW TO SOLVE IT.

It's known that medical professionals are at high risk of developing mental illnesses no thanks to the heavy workload and pressure-cooker like environment. And it probably stems all the way back into med school where there will be people stepping over others' heads to climb up the ladder.

Now that they have identified the problem, let's see how they can solve it. Better working hours, better pay, revamp the corrupted if not biased system, improve working environment... easier said than done though; we're still a long way off compared to other countries.

The Why and How to solve is right there in the news report:

"He said these doctors were either psychotic or neurotic but still managed to get into medical schools because these schools were not screening students meticulously enough."

Start with selection of students.

Really? Haha...does that mean that u have to do a mental state exam before going into Med School?
I still think that the hectic and demanding lifestyle is the cause. Most of the students are "sane" before they start working anyway.. Of course they might be a bit one kind to begin with but I doubt screening will do anything to detect it as most <quote> psychotics or neurotics <unquote> appear normal until they snap.

I am sure some psychological test and interview can weed out some before they enter medical school.

Therefore, i strongly agree that having a interview is not to ask about how much the candidate's parents earn. And can he managed the 5 years of fees during his studies. They should actually acess the candidate to find out his/her suitability for medicine. Anyhow, the interviewer they themselves are doctors too. They should know.
