there is also a graduate medical school in singapore... NUS-Duke GMS... a medical school based in singapore of NUS in collaboration with Duke university..offers medical degree MD for graduates... the fees are affordable..

i was thinking of taking this path but i calculated i would have spent 13 or so years in singapore if i were to register myself to SMC.. I find myself not ready for that ..

3 years = degree without honour
4 years = medical training in GMS
1 year = housemanship under supervisory doctor ( u must pass this before u can be fully registered to GMC .. i think da same goes to those from NUS undergraduate )
5 years = serving da government ...

but there are lots of opportunities for post-graduates training in sing..just like wgy589 mentioned..sing are trying their best to retain the doctors by offering them post graduate training.

there are pros and cons .. up to individual to decide..
*
hmmm so if u study undergrad med degree in SG u gotta serve the govt for 5 yrs?? so its like msia in a way? hmm.gif hmm.gif

At least in Singapore, the pay in gov hospital is much better. Also, post grad training in Singapore is much better than malaysia, with entry based on meritocracy instead of ethnicity.
*
really?? but i heard intern in SG earn peanuts too....compared to OZ lar so i heard....like SGD2.5 k sth like that???

im not sure bout msia's intern pay....i heard its like touching rm3k? not sure.....but i read a paper that from 2010 PGY2 or 3automatically get promoted and will get rm6k?!?! icon_question.gif icon_question.gif betui ka?!?!!? shocking.gif shocking.gif

For malaysian system, one can take up postgrad (local programme) after 4 years in service (2 years HO + 2 years MO). Of course, one can always opt for overseas postgrad training (US, UK, Aus, NZ) without adhering to such rules as well as the discriminatory policies.
*
hmm im not sure bout other countries....but its pretty hard for foreigners to do post grad specialty training in OZ....the local grads (including international students from local uni) are already clogging it up...some specialty havnt got space even for local students....and i heard spots are open to fellow OZ before its open to foreigners.....

Added on September 12, 2008, 9:05 pmRadiographers? Haha..funny. Me n my fren from Radiology posting were just discussing it just now. Unfortunately..in medicine. Where ever theres a doctor version of a field (as in radiology and radiography or opthalmology and optometry)...the allied health personnel is the technician... we do the clinical work, u take care of the technical stuff.

Coming back to what me and my fren was discussing about is that the radiographers always like to cari peluang to say "apa? medical student pun tak tahu ke?". They always like to have this inferior-superior complex with doctors cause they think we lookl down on them....We DON"T!! Theres a reason why there has to be a radiologist AND a radiographer. Some things u know we dont...somethings we know u dont. Our goverment yg kedekut ni takkan nak employ ppl for no reason. So to all allied health professionals who are reading this...stop thinking that doctors look down on u. They rely on u like crazy..
*
yeah i sense alot of these complexes too.....i got them mostly from nurses tho.....yea and all those 'dont u know this?! dont u know that?!' kinda things alot...so sien.....

wah u serious?! i heard there's also a locum program too where one can sorta go and work 'off-hours' in places in need (mostly rural places i suppose) and get paid pretty generously! a couple of hundred per day?! im not sure la...no source to support and its all from hearsay.... rolleyes.gif rolleyes.gif

damn....

What do you guys think of clinical school? Was it harder than the theoretical part of medical school?

What would you recommend me read in order to prepare for them? I've finished off all my sciences (physiology, biochem, anatomy, neuro, pharm, path) but will only start my clinicals in september next year. so, i have a year to read up on things..

any tips, or things that you wished you had done before entering the hospital? biggrin.gif biggrin.gif
*
depending on the med skool ur in.....different skools hav different approaches i suppose....i think generally clinical is more slack as there won't be anymore didactic teaching and more like learn thru experience....should be good times ahead...

but also depending on the hospital ur placed at...if u get a bunch of arrogant pricks as ur tutors....srsly GG la....can start u turn and go down the book-learning path once again...

*
haha i think the poster sorta said he/shes able to understand it back in sec school but cant get it when he/she has to relearn it in 2nd year med....

i think all these comments are unnecessary.... i mean no one understands everything in the world do they? lotsa so called 'theory' in science for example are hypotheses and its like just a probable explanation for sth rather than an exact understanding of the mechanism behind it....

well i think u should get some help! do u hav any Msian friends over there? maybe getting along, hanging out with them will help...like u guys can get together discuss things talk about things besides study stuffs and how everyones coping and etc.....

and anatomy is more like u learn with books, computer software and etc....well tahts for my case lar....my uni is one of those so called neo-med skool who are moving away from the old skool anatomy stuff and we sorta teach each other in tutorials under supervision of a tutor....well for me its just another scam by the uni to save money coz teaching it old skool with dissections and cadavers and proper tutors with small groups of students is very expensive

hey dude...which foundation program did u do?? well seems like u are not interested in MED i the 1st place from the sound of it...was it forced onto u by u know the usual Asian parents crap....coz doing MED when ur not interested in it is very very tough....

long hours, lotsa commitment and etc....u can only get thru if thats what u really wanna do and interested...but if it IS ur choice...i think the learning bit shouldn't be a prob....if u can get into med skool that means u probably wont have much trouble coping academically.....but if its a situation like what some others has said b4...like poor QC in student intake in some dodgy med skool....those med skool wouldnt be taht academically demanding anyway since its a dodgy one....

problem settling in a foreign country is pretty common...alll you can do is to ind some support...find out if theres any Msian seniors who can give you some advice...or if theres any coursemates who are staying in that same hostel, so that u can sorta travel to uni together and so on....

It's only 1st year of pre-clinicals, it's probably basic sciences anyway... so to be honest you don't lose that much compared to if you stop at say 4th or 5th year.

Whether SAM is worthy or not depends on yourself, and the path you choose to go after that... There are various alternatives for private medical institutions available in M'sia so as long as you have the desire and motivation (and sadly, money) you'll be fine.

Adjustment disorder is quite common for first year medical students particularly if you're studying overseas, as a lot of us didn't really know what's in store for years to come. Some eventually learn to love it, some become indifferent, some totally loathe it and leave; I guess you'll have to make the choice for yourself. Either stick your head in the mud and crawl through it, or make the change quickly. A swift cut is better than continue to muck around.

Cheers.

whuts?! surgeon in the making i see!! tongue.gif tongue.gif

well if its med that ur interested in then its the coping bit that ur struggling with...but if u already made up ur mind of rebooting ur whole med skool thingie....i think its better to do A levels as it sorta gives u the widest range of med skools to choose from....those australian year12 stuff isnt that good tho its shorter, u might find difficulties further down the track when u wanna apply for non-aussie unis.....

times is not a big factor as medical training itself takes forever....everyone will only start to be doctors when they are in their 30's.....

i was wondering..is it worth it if i do quit and go back and restart??the money and the time..Before this, i never thought really properly before going to russia and pursue my studies..heck..i even quit SAM just to do this..but right now i'm having 2nd thoughts already..Is it good to go back??or just sulk it up and finish it here..I'm not sure whether i can make it here..neither back home..But i just cannot cope with the education system here..I'm well aware if i leave russia now i'll never go overseas anymore..i might be fine with tat..Can anybody giv me some ideas?? Rite now my mind's confused..heck my university is still accepting new batch of ppl even it's 2weeks after the intake..what should i do now!!i just want to find an answer whether do i have the passion to do this
*
hmmm well if u ask me that depends alot on what Russian uni ur in now....their top few med skools, are pretty renowned and are quite good but there are a whole lot of crap med skools over there as well....if ur from the top skools, i think its better to learn now to cope coz coming back to ipts would be sorta like a downgrade....

anywya i usually try my best not to judge people but from the sound of ur posts....i sorta feel like ur not committed enough when u 1st decided to follow the path to russia.....and are u gonna be just as sure that ur gonna do fine when u got back to msia and restart the whole thing again?? and from the sound of it.....u said u sorta wanna try to give 1 more month of trial at russia, see if u can cope or not but sounds like uve pretty much made up ur mind, u cant cope....mayb even not try to cope and just get it on with that 1 more month so that u can tick the box, saying that uve tried ur best and still cant cope and now u HAVE to return to msia.....

im not too sure but as ive said before the whole medical profession thingie need HUGE commitments and im not too sure even if u can cope with the demands of clinical years and ur internship years if u already find it so difficult to cope in the 1st year of med in a foreign land...my take in ur situation is....u gotta decide...stick to ur decision and cut the whinging....

Just because you haven't heard of it, doesn't mean that there's no such allegations.  doh.gif

In reality, you are the one getting worked up here. Screwing Russian grads, belittling local med schools, using foul language, ridiculed others when you are being challenge. I dun see any trait of an experience doctor from UM from you.

And who's being more emo right now? Using word like "f***" up and all that.... rolleyes.gif

I dare say this: this thread is not peaceful because we have people like you. Most of the time we spent arguing with each other instead of exchanging useful information regarding exams and clinical knowledge. I dun see why you are so particular about where a doctor is from. As long as a doctor is capable, he/she will be a competent and safe doctor even if he/she is from the worst med school on earth.

Since you are an experience doctor, why not shed some light on some clinical skills or bedside knowledge which we need to focus on? All you have done is condemning here and there, without giving any useful advice.  whistling.gif

I rest my case  shakehead.gif

haiya hes from UM wat the BEST med skool in msia! thumbup.gif cant blame him if others seemed inferior to him tongue.gif tongue.gif

erm what do u mean by different level?? i got quite a few frens in UM doing med....i mean nth too different wat....they are all 4 flat students too....just like those med students in unimas, ukm etc...... i srsly think UM students are overrated....crap medskools produce good doctors too and not every doctor gradding from a fine medskool is good....it all boils down to the person itself....

well cocky quite ok wat....ppl might dun like him but at least patients wont! coz patients would prefer cocky / high confidence in oneself doctors..... tongue.gif right?

btw hypermax u a doctor / medstudent too?? which uni? which year?

i wish you all the best. just take my pointers cause i was in the position more or less like yours. the best is to think why you choose this pathway in the first place. if it wasnt your choice and desire in the first place , its high time you let the shit hit the fan and talk to your parents, and offer them your alternate solution, come back here and take monash MBBS, recognized in singapore and aussie apparently compared to imu's mbbs.
*
well right and wrong...its recognized by the Msians n the Australian Medical Association but the Sg's MA has not recognized it yet coz monash malaysia hasnt produced any grads yet....the pioneer batch of students are still 1 year away from graduation, but i think Sg will recognize it when the grads are out.....its kinda weird if the Aussies recognize it but Sg doesnt.... shakehead.gif shakehead.gif

anyway good for us....Sg grads working for us instead of the other way around!!! flex.gif flex.gif flex.gif

btw wanna raise some issue here ah....what u guys think about the medical system here.....like the ministry of health said they are working on a public-funded insurance cover thing, like the Medicare / NHS system....but no news bout it till now....and i think we should hav that coz for average folks.....seeing a 'normal doctor' / GP is getting more n more costly.... unsure.gif unsure.gif unsure.gif

well its just weird how the smc (sorry bout the sma mistake) didnt recognize it coz i thought the amc would be stricter in its regulations...anyway u know any aus med skool degrees thats not recognized by the smc?? hmm.gif

Erm... I didn't cross the bridge for my education, I headed north then down under tongue.gif
Oh yeah I did cross the bridge, but only for a 1 month-long elective hehe...

Anyway, every now and then a verbal melee breaks out between several members regarding the standard of M'sian medical students and the dire state of our healthcare system doh.gif It's a known fact that our universities' student selection may not necessarily be the best, and there are far too many complaints about sub-standard care in public institutions.

Nevertheless, I must say our healthcare system and subsidies aren't exactly too bad, in fact it's pretty beneficial for people whose income isn't at stratospheric levels. I've a friend who severed his extensor pollicis tendon at work during the holidays and required surgical repair. He ended up staying one day in a public hospital post-surgery. The management of his wounds were pretty ok, and with the surgery expenses, medications, followup review, and a one day hospital stay all he needed to pay was a meagre RM30. If that ain't affordable I don't know what is. Having said that, my friend didn't understood much about his injuries - it could be due to poor doctor-patient communication, or possibly that my friend was just too busy looking at pretty nurses distressed by his floppy thumb.

My point is, despite all the crap publicity that our doctors and hospitals and other healthcare personnel is getting, it's still a relatively efficient system where the public gets the care they need at an affordable price. If anyone's too desperate, there's always private institutions provided you have enough cash in your pockets.
*
yea i agree with u there....there might be less options in the public system (they are stretched to the max alrdy i suppose), so like not much elective surgeries or sth like that...the privates will deal with those...

but it still amazes me how the govt can afford to fund the whole public healthcare system (that rm 30 kinda case...i dont think much funding comes from the fees paid by the patient)....i think i heard our health minister said there are plans to revamp our public health system, sorta making into sth like EPF, like everyone have to put aside some $$ for healthcare, sorta like a govt run insurance kinda thing...im not too sure...he sort of said it wasnt a good time to discuss the matter back then coz of the general election buzz....but they still havnt got started now that the election is waaay over.....

you could easily google or wiki the answer, but you choose to be spoonfed..........not a good sign.........

when they first invented the typewriter, they calculated the letters most used in the commonly used words, and place them in the middle, for ease of typing, and the less used letters further out.......

sorry dude off topic but ur explanation is abit flawed.....coz i remembered it was to prevent the metal stamping thingy in the typrewriter from clashing...looked it up and here u go....

Sholes' original prototypes had a problem with the bars colliding with each other and jamming. So the story goes that he arranged the keys with the most common letters in hard to reach spots, to slow typists down and try to avoid this problem.

but just to reinforce the idea of googling things....one should always seek up knowledge....not taking spoonfeds...even more so as a future clinician....coz u know how drug company will always push 'their side of the story' to convince us over certain stuffs....

well my take on this is....go for those whu offer clinical years overseas (if u planning to do twinning la), not like the PMC's local clinical years....coz i think basic bookish knowledge from the pre-clinical years is all the same...like u can even study them all from the books at home and still pass the exams...but clinical years is important as different countries have different ways of running their healthcare system....so if u wanna get more exposure and etc u should take the non-PMC way...

besides after doing ur clinical years overseas....i think it would be easier to stay overseas and work there (if thats your plan la), coz its harder if u do it the PMC way...say study in ireland then come back msia and then have to reapply and go thru all the hassle, whereas the other way around is much simpler, not to mention you might get to know renowned doctors there to write some recommendation or sth like that....

my 2 cents la...

Eh, is doctor really going to be surplus by 5 years? The thing is that I always view medicine as a stable job even until I can retire. Is it going to really affect us who interested in them now?
*
oh yea! ur right! its like a certain percentage...i remembered him telling me that!

oh i dont think there will be surplus...like even in developed countries...theres always demand for docs....dun worry....we r all gonna be fine....that surplus report in the media is baseless.....sth like it doesnt take into consideration the population growth, when calculating the growth of the medical workforce...i cant see how exceeding the pathetic patient to doctor ratio in Msia would be deemed as surplus....if thats the case they should raise the bar for standard of healthcare delivery...

Yeah, but believe me that not many people I know get from low result to a AAA result in STPM. Your best chance is to go to Matrik. Period. Never ever go to STPM. But remember to study until late night to achieve this. Nothing is impossible until you try but only if you try your very best.

yea thats the best bet...matrik....very high rates of getting 4 flat....and they usually snap up the spots 1st...coz their results are published earlier...thus get to secure those spots right away...

i am not familiar with irish med schools, but they are generally easier to enter (apparently a lot of americans also go ireland for medicine too)........

it would not be possible for uk though, as the application process for sept 09 intake is well underway, and you have missed the qualification exams.........

that would be recognised by smc......... smile.gif
