I think this depend the sound quality of the Movie or TV drama.  Some movie I also hard to hear surround sound  even I am using 5.1 system.
I like to test surround sound of UHD  movie  10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) .  I can feel monster run at top of my head, even using 5.1  non atmos system.

*
ur 5.1 placement correct or not? kekekekke

surprisingly the best surround I feel like last time was this pioneer wireless 5.1 DVD player I had

the rear 2 channels are wireless but attached to each other, and I put it directly behind my head hahahahah

so shiok the rear channel when bullets flying here n there hahaha

then subsequently proper 5.1 or 5.1.2 also so so, unless for gaming, then still ok

virtual surround depends heavily on the room shape itself and the furniture in it.

hey guys.
Would like some recommendations for a friend of mine on 5.1 system for living room. Budget is ~RM4k. This is to play downloaded HD movie.
Current system is normal RM1.5k HTIB, few years old already.
Living room size is around 18ft x 20ft x 9ft.
Any comment is welcome.

All. Out of phase audio only makes the audio non-directional, which is far from the surround effect.

RM4k can barely buy a set of 5.1 and that's for speakers only. An entry level receiver will already cost RM2k.

Suggest to just buy 1 pair of main L and R bookshelf only, a receiver then slowly add on the other speakers when budget is bigger. More speakers is not always better, in fact most times more is actually worse if you cannot even place the speakers properly and treat the room right in the first place.

Not much. Your ringgit sucks. Even all new entry level receivers (2020-2021 models) are also overpriced these days.

Your best bet is to find some clearance 2019 model like a Yamaha RX-V385 for around the RM2k mark. You won't get HDMI 2.1 features of course.

Ok great. Will start to look from there. Maybe the budget of 4k might go up.

I'm thinking about getting an AV receiver & satellite speakers with subwoofer but before I blindly buy into any of these stuff, I need to know which is the most reliable brand for an av receiver and also for satellite speakers with subwoofer. By the way I have a tight budget!  blush.gif

1. Which brand is the most reliable in terms of quality & worth the money?  hmm.gif
2. My budget is around RM900 - RM1300 (AV receiver) & RM800 - RM1200 (satellite speakers with subwoofer)  icon_rolleyes.gif
3. I'm going to put it into my master room.  tongue.gif

Your thoughts please?  icon_question.gif

Having a Amplifier with 2 book-shelf speakers and a Sub-woofer will somehow take up some space if you are short on that ..hehe
Why dont you have a look at the Soundbar with Dolby Atmos 2.0 or 2.1 Channel.
Soundbar with Dolby Atmos will save space, give you great sound as compared to Amps or soundbars without Dolby Atmos.

https://www.whathifi.com/best-buys/best-dol...mos-tv-speakers

Have a read and you can perhaps find one that fits your budget . Personally test these Soundbars 2.0 and 2.1 which have Dolby Atmos, perhaps you can find one .

Some of them have higher price for the ones with high budget, but one can also get something good for a small budget..

Hope this helps..take your time and test at the shop that allows you ..after all its your money that should be well spent..cheers

hey bro!! how are you?

hahaha yes, i'm into stereo for many years, still learning though.

My friend will go for either yamaha, denon or marantz receiver, and pair with his current low priced speaker for now. Will keep poisoning him with higher-end item biggrin.gif

I also stereo kaki long time ago. Now I am enjoy arcam receiver with xtz bookshelf speaker. Mostly I am using stereo mode to enjoy my tv drama, because most of the sources are pcm 2.0 only.Although I try to up-mix 2.0 source to 5.1 with dobly surround mode. But I prefer more natural stereo mode. Although dolby surround mode is louder.

So after that, I give up any upmix surround mode. IF source is dts hd, I play dts HD. source is dolby truhd, i play dolby truhd. If source is Atmos or DTS-x, I play Atmos or DTS-x. IF soure is stereo, I only use left & Right Channel to play.

Referring to the bolded part, that is some lofty claim you made there. Can you give some details of what you have tried and compared against what amp system to come to your conclusion?
Really interested to know as I always thought that soundbars are rubbish and cannot compete with amps + passive speakers of similar value. If soundbars have indeed improved so much I would also be keen to give them a try.
Thanks in advance.
