guys, i'm really thinking if a 1070 would really be an overkill as I would only like to play max settings on a 1080p output at 60 fps. what will be a good alternative to a 1070?

What's wrong with buying a 1070 to play at 1080p? Overkill is such a useless word.

Don't have a higher res screen, then why not try downsampling? Sharper images, lesser aliasing, game looks better, still runs at 60fps.

Thanks for your inputs guys!

I really want to upgrade my 760. 1060 will probably arrive later this year. Hoping to have it released before BF1. biggrin.gif These 1070 reviews are really tempting. Hoping for under rm2k price point. biggrin.gif

I LOL when people say "overkill" it's so generalized.

I think they are referring to DOTA2 / CS:GO only.

Every framerate counts man, especially when on AAA titles. Even my cards like R9 390 (in between GTX 970 and GTX 980) have framerate drop under 60 fps on The Division at Ultra settings on 1080P when scenes are intense. A GTX 980 Ti would have it handled just nicely, same would apply to GTX 1070.

btw in MOBA games, even 60fps is actually insufficient. Try games like League of Legends, the framerate counter shows 60 fps but it's actually sub-optimal and you'll see frames aren't smooth at all. You'll need to reach 150fps range to have graphics glide nicely around.

XB271HU is a great monitor, PROVIDED you can get a defect-free panel.

It has a lot of QC problems till this day. Dust stuck between the panels, mediocre to bad levels of backlight bleed and substantial IPS glow.

I got the predecessor XB270HU and luckily no defects. I'm not sensitive to IPS glow so can't really commend on that. If I'm in the market for new gaming monitor, I will definitely gamble on a 3840x1440 ultra wide 100Hz IPS screen with some adaptive sync.

Gaming only, not for any graphical work since curve is no good.

This is so, so, soooo true.

Just hitting "60 fps" on the chart means very little. When actually playing a game, the dips and peaks will be so erratic for a card that just "hits 60fps" on a chart for a given game is actually much more annoying than just playing at a solid 30fps with zero drops.

To everyone who just keeps saying "overkill", nothing is overkill if you know how to use your hardware. It's only the matter of how much you are willing to spend.

And people still think it's sufficient to hit 30 fps. biggrin.gif

No it isn't, even on FPS once the counter shows 40ish range you'll also feel the pinch already.

Just because movies play at 25fps - 30fps doesn't mean it works the same for games. Some may say PS4 is 30fps what ......... .well yeah, that's PS4 games on TV. I also don't know how to explain, I play on both PS4 and PC and I can tell for sure that games at averaging at 30 - 60 fps, you'll encounter unpleasant experience from time to time once the framerate dips.

It's not overkill when it assures you the maximum optimal framerate most of the time.

Maybe overkill is too profound but I absolutely agree with you that these new cards matter with regards to performance and FPS stability. I was probably comparing 1070 vs older cards which would be the bang for the buck for 1080p gaming. I haven't done an in-depth research on the comparison between 1070 and 970 but it tells me that investing on a higher card is the way to go given the fact that 1070 is superior in all aspects but also future-proofing my rig as well.

It's just me or probably I think way too much that Pascal is intended for 1440p and above haha!

maybe what u meant is under-utilized? i know some people cannot justify put 2k+ in gpu because in the end they only play casually and dont care about ultra/fps. but i dun think you have to limit yourself in 1080p with the 1070, like they said if you know how to utilize your card, play with ultra textures/supersampling/msaa or go for 144hz monitor for example will make your card worth the moneys.

One thing to note is that card's price to performance ratio is always the worst at the highest end and the lowest end of the line-up.

However the higher performance card would have better satisfaction, of course there will be a time where one has to consider performance gain vs cost incurred.

Why pay for 1080 when 1070 is suffice?

Nevertheless, a GTX 980 Ti is barely sufficient for 4K UHD gaming so I reckon the GTX 1080 with better performance will be better but that is no guarantee that it will be satisfactory on 4K UHD gaming.

For GTX 980 TI user, I think it would be better just to get another GTX 980 Ti and SLI it instead of selling it off and top up $$$ for 1080.

Nice... cool2.gif

On another note, as mentioned moving from a 980 Ti or even 980 to a 1080 is not really worth it imo. I'd say for those who has been sticking out on their 'old cards', the 1070 - best bang for your buck right now! laugh.gif

haha... the review for the MSI 1070 had been suspended from Guru3D. Apparently AIB 1070 reviews are still embargoed until Friday. Guess we got some information earlier then intended.

Anyways, as for overkill or not... When I got my 970, I also thought it was enough for 1080 gaming. Then Witcher 3 came... and I upgraded to 2560x1080 monitor. Only overkill is our wallet... T_T

must... resist... 10... 70...

I used MOBA as an example because it's a game where many people think does not need high FPS, and very unlike AAA titles such as The Witcher III.
