haha even my r4s are still running much faster than most laptops today (cpu wise). that's stock speed, after 3 years.

680m is showing its age, but i still play bf4 with it (custom settings; running slightly over 60fps at 1080p in 64-player maps ). the one with 880m still good.

oh yes i just flashed the bios of the one with 880m to a13 (stock aw bios). everything is running fine with optimus. however i have problems installing geforce driver when i switched to dgpu mode. it always shows MS display driver only. do you know how to fix that part?

I don't think you can switch dgpu mode and optimus mode just like that without reinstalling the driver.

If you know how to mode inf. look at the device ID. optimus and dgpu both have different device ID even if the card is same.

i'm sure with that modded .inf optimus+880m works fine (no sign of sudden drop of fps yet). note that the installation went well when i ran the modded geforce installer in dgpu mode.

Yes, both mode will have different device id. So, if u changed from optimus to dgpu or vice versa, you'll need to reinstall driver with modded inf which based on current device id.

Has anyone bought theirs AW with the graphic amplifier ? Any substantial change to performance during gaming ?

tbh, turning v-sync on (limiting the fps to 60) eliminates throttling all together. that brings the max gpu temperature down to below 70c in my case. i just wanna find out if there is a way to do it right without turning it on.

I didn't have it. But base on what I read online. Yes, you can get significant performance during gaming. If you use GTX 980 or Titan X with graphics amplifier.

The PCIE 4.0 interface is a 3rd generation. The performance lost of using GTX 980 during testing is about 5%

Of course If you only play Minesweeper you won't see any improvement.

all you told us was the outcome. there are plenty of things that can cause low fps. care to share more? like was this happened before? when was it started? what antivirus are you running? is the laptop plugged in? playing games with wifi or wired? etc.

I'm not really sure when it happened, it was fine until I open some games and play with it. Therefore, I didn't notice it until I played Dota 2 few days ago which I seldom play games nowadays. It happened before last year, overheating covered with dust which I fixed it by cleaning the fan. I had Kaspersky installed and updated drivers such as GC etc. My laptop was plugged in directly all the time, battery was extracted just because I don't need it. I'm currently using wifi to play online games of course but I don't think it's cost by the internet services because my ping was good at 5%.

maybe it's the internet. these few days when i access some places it's damn slow, but when i access websites from local and neighboring countries, it's damn fast. kaspersky should be disabled automatically during gaming. if you previously also play games with wifi, it's unlikely network issues.

Old M15x ? You must have accidentally enabled stealth mode.

i am currently testing w10 insider preview (build 10125) on aw18. there were only minor incompatibilities so far (e.g. installer issues due to incompatible os version. got around them by installing the drivers only manually).

there are still os bugs here and there. (plenty of them. it's like minefield. e.g. now the start menu is not working for unknown reasons hehe) for gaming, i think it's better than w8.1. the gpu drivers are still at their early development stages, but last night when i played bf4, intensive 64p large maps, everything was great.

My hand so itchy to upgrade the SSD. This AW loading is so slow

oh a 2.5" sata ssd. by right it should run with no issues.

make sure the interposer is connected properly to the ssd, and the connection to the mobo is secured properly. if it's still not working, test the ssd on another computer to see if it works. there should be no need to change anything in the bios, but just in case, check if the sata operations is set to ahci mode. (normally this is not necessary, because ahci is just a subset of raid)

i tried many times, but failed. but when revert back to original HDD, it's working fine.

have you tested the new ssd with another computer? or, using usb-based hdd enclosure and test it with your laptop?

yes, tried and working with ext dongle. i transferred file in the ssd to current hdd in the laptop. works fine.
others computer also fine, previously the ssd used in my desktop.

Are you using latest version of bios?

it appeared that aw13 has incompatibilities with certain sata ssds. (e.g. crucial sata ssds have been identified. however their m.2 variants will work. http://eu.alienwarearena.com/forums/thread...crucial-mx-200)

it was said by the official support that this is a hardware issue, not bios, so it cannot be fixed.

edit: what if you disable the secureboot in the bios?

also check out the videos. the second video said there were problems doing windows installs on the new drive. however it worked when using recovery made by alien respawn. but i am not sure if this is good for you because your laptop couldn't detect the new drive at all.

Guys....

For those using M17XR(x) and M18R1/2 and planned to upgrade GPU (single GPU), here's what I've tested today on the power consumption.

Mine is M18XR1 CPU I7-2670QM (45W TDP) with upgraded GPU (From GTX560M (75W TDP) to GTX780M (100W TDP)). Everything else are factory standard except for an additional of SSD.

Here are what I observed:

a. Fully Charged Battery
1. During idle, Power Consumption is ranging around 35W
2. (Only) the CPU Stress test gain the wattage to around 81
3. (Only) the GPU Stress test gain the wattage to around 137W
4. Stress test the CPU + GPU + FPU + System memory = around 178W Spike at 183W)

b. While Charging
1. During idle, Power Consumption was ranging around 110W
2. (Only) the CPU Stress test gain the wattage to 156W
3. (Only) the GPU Stress test gain the wattage to around 211W
4. Stress test the CPU + GPU + FPU + System memory = around 257W (Spike at 261W)

I am using this wattage meter :



The software : AIDA64 - System Stability Test

My conclusion :
1. When battery full (No charging) with a single GPU (100W TDP GPU), I do not see any problem to use the 240W Power Adaptor.
2. When battery is charging, the 240W adapter should be ok for gaming. Sincerely, I haven't found any game that stress out CPU together with GPU to the max. But if there is one, than you might facing throttling issue or some other problem.
3. If you are using CPU which have higher TDP (than mine) and planned for GTX980M (122W TDP) upgrade, you should consider using 330W adapter.
4. The wattage gain as per TDP specs is real. I mean, if your GPU TDP is 100W, when you stress it to the max, it will give you near exact figure.

Hope this could help someone that still wondering whether should or shouldn't he upgrade the power adapter when upgrade GPU or CPU.

Very good findings. This might help some of the new buyer for the new Alienware that using GTX 980m clear out the doubts of they either stick with the stock power brick which is 180w or buy a new one 240w/330w

What..? Seriously the new 17" comes with 180w adapter? Wowww...i couldn't say more. Maybe the new machine using less power a.k.a energy saver. They need to test the wattage just to find it out. But maybe it just enough juice to power up all the components. Like i said, i doubt that you wanna play a game which stress all out the CPU and GPU until mouse movement and typing also lagging....

Hello all. I am a proud owner of AW17 R2 still a newbie I might say. So stupid question is, should I remove the battery from the laptop? Is the battery will "kong" if I don't remove it while using the laptop. Some say yes and some say no. So I want to try asking the sifu2 here that have vast experience on using this laptop. Thanks

about the battery, the answer is no, you don't need to remove the battery from the laptop, even if the laptop is connected to the adapter all the times (to me it's a good protection to power loss). since a few years ago, laptops already have a smart mechanism that prevents battery from recharging too frequently. when it's still above certain limit (i think it's about 90% or more) it will not charge. the charging only gets triggered when the battery is below that threshold.. furthermore, if you right-click on the power icon at the notification area, dell has a battery protection option that you can set up to help reducing recharging. it will cut off the power source, drain the battery, then to let it charge once in a while.

my m17x r4 is always connected to power adapter with battery installed. even after 3 years, my r4's battery wear level is still minimal.

however just bear in mind that battery is still wearable. it will wear more if you're on battery power most of the times.

Hm i think I gave you some wrong info sorry. I should say that the dell function is for machines that are plugged in most of the times. It's not about reducing recharging, but to help make sure that once in a while, a full recharge is done to the battery. Frequent partial charging is not good for a battery because it create lower max capacity.

You can try to perform a factory reset. Is much more easier than format if the seller haven't format the recovery partition.
The 80GB mSata SSD is config as a "cache" drive which you can't see it in windows. Unless you know how to RAID works and you can make it appear in your windows for you to access.

you should be able to create a recovery usb stick with alienrespawn. if you wanna do clean install, use this tool to download the right version of windows 8.1. (normally it should be windows core, oem. however it might be other windows versions) you can get the exact windows version by running slmgr /dli in administrative command prompt. also download the latest drivers from dell's support page.

as for the caching ssd, you should be able to verify its presence with device manager, under disk drives.

factory reset is pretty straight forward so you should be fine.

yes. as i explained in the previous post that it's for laptops which are plugged in most of the times.

It not really make a difference in the sense of battery health protection. As long as you remember, reduce your battery in 100%->0% cycle. Will make your battery last longer. In other words, always let your battery in a fully charge mode.

Don't believe those stupid outdated internet article that ask you not to charge battery overnight bla bla bla.
