Guys, I am using a M17x R4 with the 660M. This has never happened before, but it seems that when I'm gaming, it throttles at times.

Say I'm playing World of Tanks, at lowest settings (at 720 reso too), it runs fine for about 5 minutes in game at 50FPS or so, and then it'll go down to 5-9 FPS for 1 minute or so. Any idea what's up with my baby?

Any tests I can run to give it a proper check?

Running Windows 8.1

Did you monitor the temperature?
But this sound like unstable power supply. Is your charger keep on disconnecting?

It seems my temp is uber high at 80+ even at idle. I guess it's time to replace the thermal paste?

Yes that's way over tolerable limit. (85c under load; and you have that at idle) You must clean up the fans, heat sink, and vents for cpu and gpu. In your case, normal thermal paste like mix-4 will do the job well. For better thermal performance, I suggest you use gelid gc-extreme.

Cool. Will the Arctic Silver 5 do? So I need to get some rubbing alcohol too, eh? Damn it. Anyways.
The 3 vents at the bottom and 2 rear of the laptop?

As5 is a good paste, however it needs curing time; meaning they need time to reach optimal performance. In the case of as5, it's like 200 hours (it's stated in the as5 user manual; also take a look at the recommended way to apply it). Modern thermal pastes usually have no curing time. Just apply and that's it.

Basically you need a screw driver, a brush, a bottle of >90% alcohol, cotton/cotton butts, and thermal paste. It's better to do this outside of your house haha

You take off battery, press power button for a few secs to drain power; take off back cover, unplug fans cables; take off fans, heat sinks. Then starts cleaning up biggrin.gif

edit: i have tried some thermal pastes, including as5, ic diamond, tuniq tx-4, mx-4, prolimatech pk-2 and 3, coolaboratory liquid ultra (clu), and gelid gc-extreme. to me i think gc-extreme is a better choice, because it has good results, and it doesn't leave anything behind (e.g. ic diamond is abrasive and it leaves black stain-like marks on the copper heat sink; clu is conductive, corrode aluminum, and is hard to remove)

Sweet. Super helpful post. Thanks a lot man. Sounds simple enough for me to not screw this up. LOL
Will look for the Gelid GC-Extreme.

You need to be glad that your processor hasn't fry... haha
It will auto shut down your laptop when it reach 105c.
So, must act fast to clean your laptop and repaste. flex.gif

Done. Cleaned it just now. Couldn't find the Gelid GC-Extreme. But I guess this one will do until it arrives from Korea lol. Bought one from eBay. Should be fun to give a good paste a try.

Also did a clean reinstall of graphic drivers and it seems my games are running uber smoothly. Damn.

Oh and dude, do you think I should upgrade my GPU to something better in the future? Seems like it'll be a helluva lot of difference from my current.

Maybe the 770M?

If you want GTX 770m due to tight budget. I recommend you try out GTX 870m.
It is a very good card and running so damn cool  blush.gif

Took a look at your thread, 870M is way beyond my budget. I've only got....1k to spare lol.

What about the 860M or the 770M? I don't really see a difference lol

Hello thar fellow Aliens,

So my power brick was fried due to a power surge a week or so ago. Buying a new adapter, and do you think buying a 330W brick is alright?

Also, been thinking about either buying a new desktop or just upgrade my current M17x R4.

6GB RAM, 500GB HDD, GTX 660M

I reckon I'd upgrade the RAM to 8GB or so, since I multitask a ton. I heard that doing 2x4GB is better than 1x8GB, would love your input on that, maybe for future proofing, just get 1x8GB and buy more 8GB sticks in the future just for the fun of it? XD

And do you guys think getting an mSata SSD be good for it?

Upgrades I've been thinking of...

1. Storage

HDD - Add 1TB along with the current 500GB (7200 RPM preferably?)
SSD - Add 1 mSATA SSD at 128GB (Just for Windows)

2. RAM

1 x 8GB - 1600mhz, 204 pins, Any brands recommended? (Should I get a 1866 instead?)
Future - Add 3 more 8GB

3. GPU

GTX 660M - Any upgrades recommended? Below RM1500 preferably.

Any input and recommendations are greatly apreciated! Pretty sure you guys are better at this than I am.
