Make sure your landlord seems like a reasonable person and not those who give all sorts of conditions like "you can only use washing machine once a month and that also only to wash 2 t shirts." Best is to find landlady who will cook for you, give food in return for 'services,' you can PM jitshiong to ask his experience in this.

Do some research on the direct neighbourhood too

I didn't when renting my place, started hearing a lot of crazy loud screams in the day time
Turns out the "condo" directly opposite my room is a home for intellectually disabled patients sweat.gif

Stay as near as possible ? Even though if the rent are slightly higher, as commuting to work could easily like 1 hrs+ one way and if require multiply transit the cost do add up. So is better to pay a little extra a get more sleeping time biggrin.gif

Tiong bahru, kallang and toa payoh are good areas to start. Farrer park / boon keng as well if u work along dhoby ghaut or harborfront.

You don't fit the typical profile of a LYN forummer in the "working in Singapore" thread i.e. someone who is either fresh on board in Singapore or is still in the early stages of their careers.  I suppose you are married to a wealthy man and you come from a well to do family yourself.

3. I studied and worked hard. I earn more than most men in this thread. I don't fit in the typical man earn more than woman profile. Still in my early 30s I think I could fit in the early stage of my career. Inherited some peanuts yes, but also gathered some small coins with my own effort rclxm9.gif .

You are not the only foreigner, and Singapore unlike yesteryears they no longer have special preference with Malaysians.

You are competing with angmoh, Philippinoes, Indonesians, Thai, PRCs. Yes securing a job in SG in recent years is very competitive.

p/s: and to those who commented "u go there, ppl look down on u. oh look another malaysian accepting lowball offer"... look at the mirror and ask yourself if you are an elite. If only ego pay your bills...

Wouldn't be able to advise you specifically regarding Singapore yet, but in general I would prefer keeping a well updated profile in LinkedIn to actually using a regular job hunting database like Jobstreet.
I regularly receive many unsolicited requests for interview from headhunters and hiring managers just based on my LinkedIn profile alone. I don't think I've used Jobstreet for years...

Jobstreet is soo..... 2004? sweat.gif
I find it useful for screening for junior/entry level staff but somehow headhunters and referrals from personal networks are usually more effective for experienced people, at least based on my personal experience.

How you define lowball? Fight for equal rights and get the same pay as Singaporeans?
Don't forget your employer still needs to pay your foreigner levy every month to keep you with the company.
And most executive positions don't get OT pay, be it locals or foreigners.

Much lower pay is subjective, If you are currently earning RM5k in MY to me S$3-4k in SG is reasonable.

Jobstreet didnt work for me either. What I did was I came up with a good cover letter and send it together with my resume to HR emails. Different cover letter for different organization/job.
You can get the emails through company websites under career/vacancy section or give them a call and ask to speak to any HR personnel.

About 2 years ago, I applied for job in SG as an audit junior. They quoted me 1.6k SGD when I was earning RM2.2k.

So isnt that lowballing considering the rent in SG is about 600 assuming I stay alone in a common room?

The employer damn funny whereby he said that you can survive one with this amount. if you dont smoke ciggies right.

Question to you: can you survive with RM2,200 in KL?

Many years ago I was earning RM3k, took up a job in SG at S$2k.

Rent $500
Meals $500
Transport $100
Phone and Internet $100

What else do you really need to spend on?

Even at $1.6k salary you save $400 per month. That is RM1,200 of savings if you want to calculate in MYR terms.
Earn RM2.2k in MY... can one save even RM500 per month?
