What is Gunpla?

Gundam Models refers to plastic and non-plastic model kits depicting the mechas, vehicles and characters of the fictional Mobile Suit Gundam universe. These kits have become popular among anime fans and model-lovers, especially in Japan and in other nearby Asian countries since 1980s. The popularity of Gundam models increased in the 1990s with North America and Europe being exposed to Gundam through television, video and manga. These Gundam Models may also be called Gunpla (ガンプラ Ganpura?), a portmanteau of "Gundam plastic model". "Gunpla" more commonly refers to the practice of building Gundam models, rather than the models themselves.

Yeah asked them, they said everyday will restock. Seems they learned their lesson from last year expo and the warehouse clearance.

My personal opinion (and taste), not that worth it. The smoky clear part is wonderful, but the gold bling just doesn't blend well with it.

Destiny is a fast moving one, Zeta is almost not moving at all, neither is Amatsu

MG FAU some people are taking, but stocks moving very slowly, some are clearing out SD Sazabi but still can see a lot on shelf

damn, 10 boxes? surely scalper.. can't have that many friends who want whistling.gif i hope he is never able to sell them off, ever

Pink Zeta is awesome, but not the clear color to me. Although, a good thing about clear kit is you don't have to go through the hassle of topcoating it laugh.gif

Because CE kits are mostly 17m to 18m tall, compared to the taller (hence bigger) UC kits which are generally 20m tall.

Just an update. When I left around 7:30 pm all the MG FAU Expo's were gone. I was able to get 1 of the last 2 units on the shelf. The last one disappeared shortly.

Hopefully they will restock in the coming days for those weren't able to get the Expo models.

Also the limited edition tote bags were out of stock (for those who bought a MG or PG) The sign posted was "today finish", so they may have limited bags to give out per day.

SEED units are around 17m tall, as said above and UC ones are generally larger, ranging from 18m to almost 23m.. also 27m for certain units tongue.gif

I think their English comprehension is bad, the promo note at the counter clearly said purchase ANY kit for a free eco bag (more than RM150 for MG size bag, RM 300 for PG size bag). It is not buy an MG to get the MG eco bag doh.gif

unfortunately no.. Victory is mainly too clean design.. and no clue of F91..If they are 18cm & above i might give it a go...
so far size wise in MG, im quite happy with the unicorn series, from grunts to main lead MS..

i Know that zeta series sizes are quite big too.
i might hv to jump for sazabi & Nu if theres not much big sizes MG left..

Any other ssuggestions on MG?

Do they restock those expo limited edition kits?
Does those modeler competitors already put on display thier artwork in the showcase?

old MG or UC kits mostly movable hand. I think they start to really use swap hand during wing and seed since the hands tend to be smaller hmm.gif

not sure but to me the peg is not the main issue.
the back of the rifle is quite long and will frequently hit the arm when you try to pose it
nonetheless zeta a1 is definitely a good kit despite its age, quite stable for a transformable kit nod.gif

more like it's hard to have it to hold properly
however, for Zeta's small rifle, it doesn't pose such a big problem

check for yourself smile.gif

Zeta Plus era MGs don't have pegs in their hands

answer to your first question, no

as for second question, which Sazabi did you mean?
time doesn't play a factor here
if an action base can support a kit, it will support indefinitely, it's not like it will loosen or sag over time lol
the question here is how stable it is

an Action Base 2 1 could support HGUC Sazabi just fine
however for MG Sazabi(both old and ver Ka), it can support it, but dangerously wobbly, I wouldn't risk it

A question about the Gunpla Expo at IPC. With the exception of the limited expo-only products, are the model kits and stuffs there worth buying compared to hobby shops like Time Machine and such? In terms of price, that is. Planning to go down there this weekend and possibly grab a kit if it's slightly cheaper compared to normal market prices.

most kits have slightly higher price tag compared to the hobby shops in Times Square, about RM10+ more for MGs as an example. I wouldn't suggest you to buy any unless those kits that's really, really hard to find or it's been a while since the last time your favourite hobby shop restocked that particular kit.

Gunpla Expo is the time to hunt the Expo kits laugh.gif

I'm using action base 1 for Sinanju as AB2's much smaller base doesn't provide enough stability for larger 1/144 kits. If you extend it to the maximum height, the small base of the AB2 will make it very shaky.

If you're merely posing it in an upright pose AB2 should be OK for the Sazabi, but wilder, dynamic poses may very well be a problem.

Most action base pegs (both 1 and 2) are too shallow to support bigger kits hence you can't position them in wild poses unless you modify the connection points, e.g. blu tac/superglue them to thicken them.

Unless shelf space/cost is an issue, go for action base 1 instead of 2.

Those three stores in Timesquare, you really need to have your luck, sometimes they each have attractive discount for different kits, need to go at the right time.

Haha true true, HxiiiK. Why do we have to choose such an expensive hobby?!??!? XD

Thanks mf_yamato for sharing ^^. Great deal!

@blur 88
I have GM301 & GM302( I've not used it yet though) , looking at the models, GM301,302, GM303 are basically the same type of markers, just different colors. Can someone clarify?

Anyone got Tallgeese III (Dragon Momoko)? Is it good?

were in the same boat.. online buy for mg kit sometimes box big.. charges is high for post..
some offer flat rate for post just pay 10 or 15 and doent matter how many item combine.. better plan and get more than one to save on shiiping charges.

@blur88

If you find it smeared all over when you try to rub it off, then i suggest cotton bud dabbed with thinner? Don't press too hard against the plastic though.

If you really want to use an eraser, i saw somewhere that using hi-polymer eraser is extremely effective though.... But more expensive (RM1.60-2?) tongue.gif

A cheaper eraser will do the same but will take more effort to rub it off.

RG Zeta Expo stock seems untouched. not much people grabbed.

as for the RG Destiny Heine Westenfluss, they do restock every couple of hours or so but each time they only bring out like 10-ish boxes only. I was there since 4.30pm until 9.30pm just now, and seen the Destiny being restocked a couple of times brows.gif

Yeah his money biggrin.gif

But the expo prices this time are not bad, HG is roughly RM5-RM10 more and MG is RM10-RM20 more than outside, should be OK considering the hassle you have to go to Timesquare (if you live nearby) biggrin.gif

If you mean PG Unicorn, I rather wait for someone to put up a review. Not gonna buy it at the time of release, so not hyping up.

If you mean RG Wing Zero, I'm disappointed that they did not bring it to the expo currently held at IPC.

If you mean PG Unicorn, I rather wait for someone to put up a review. Not gonna buy it at the time of release, so not hyping up.

If you mean RG Wing Zero, I'm disappointed that they did not bring it to the expo currently held at IPC.

i think they did bring it...
i saw it at the RG display rack at the same row as those expo

You don't PLAY gundam! You build it then make it do kickass poses! xD

You can get it online through a lot of hobby online stores or hobby stores nearby your house~

Where do you stay?

I recommend GM01 - 03 for lining. You can try GM301 - 303 (you can find it in youtube to see how to use this one).

I've seen before, Grey is for White parts. Brown is for Red or Yellow parts. Black is for Blue and Grey parts. Although since I was a beginner to panel lining, I only bought the black marker and used it on my entire Astray Red Frame PG. Doesn't look too bad. But will try the other markers in the future.

NO, not morning! Not when its cold!
Find a time that the sun is right on top on your head, and its so hot you have to wear a singlet. That is the most suitable time for top coating!

No difference, but you should take precaution. Always allow 20-30 minutes of the first layer to completely dry, otherwise when you spray the second layer of coating, frosting can still occur.

the price may go down from time to time but don't expect it to be below 200 though (it is a miracle if it even goes down to 250 laugh.gif )
besides, I don't consider turn X to be that famous compared to sazabi since there are those who have a hard time understanding the story

but everything depends on your luck. I've seen several surprises that pops out of of nowhere in the garage sales section whistling.gif

I sort of lost my SD Sazabi's right fingers. Is there any places that sells replacement parts or if there's anyway to order 1? T___T

shoulder needs a bit of fiddling, but elbow is strong enough
wrist joints are the same as Nu ver Ka so, terrible.. but the rifle has a locking mechanism so it can hold up pretty well
massive shield, no problems whatsoever

to certain extend true but Yen is not trading @ 0.0292.. it used to be as high as 0.04.
seeing that their economy is again under deflationary pressure and the end of QE3, has shifted capital flight from Yen based to US assets... so further gain vs yen is possible at least for the next few months.
But in Dec, Abe may introduce increase in sales tax again to help reduce the deficit (from 8% to 10%?)... this will offset the gain in ringgit vs Yen. So hard to say.. we will see how things play out.

Depends on the paint job you want to do.
i recommend you get atleast one each.
they make it easier for paint to stick and level the surface for painting.
If you are planning to paint a light color scheme on a dark part, the surfacer makes it easier.

There are cheaper (and bigger volume) alternatives you can find in hardware stores.

You need to apply extra 1-2 layers compared to Mr. Hobby. On the bright side, the volume is much bigger than Mr. Hobby.

I usually prefer gamers arena on the 7th floor next to xl-toys. Their price are usually tempting which is probably why most of the popular kits were sold out (usually HG) when I visit.
IT Toys also have great pricing but don't be fooled by their so called discounts. yes, the price is cheap but I'm not if it still count as discount when the price remains the same every time I went there laugh.gif
Time Machine is another good shop but their stocks seems kinda limited and not well arrranged

not sure if there's any new shop coz I haven't been there for a while

Agreed. Prefer their old shop layout where the kits are arranged for easier view and purchase.

That's like defeating the purpose of buying an electro-plated kit, no?

No amount of AB can replace electroplating finish.

1. Hand paint/gold marker will help a little in hiding nubs but if some1 look closely it will be very obvious.
2. AB will completely hide it, but u'll be wasting money buying a plated kit and ab-ing it off. Not to mention it'll nvr be as shinny.
3. Invoke some artistic liberties and use decals to hide it a little, but again it'll be obvious if some1 look closely.

No (sane) solution will be perfect when it comes to plated kit, we cant replicate the effect with normal paints no matter how hard u try. U just gotta accept it.

Note: The (insane) solution is to strip off the plated finish and bring it to some shop that offers electroplating services. I dont know what shop offers this nor will they entertain u even if u manage to find 1 since electroplating is serious industrial level stuff, highly poisonous and very toxic. May cost u both arms both legs and a kidney too.

yeap. exactly. that's the only turn down for these extra finish kits

if you're gonna repaint the whole thing (although the metallic effect still can be replicated) might as well get a normal one

this has been discussed for many times already but I'm feeling like making a short essay this afternoon so there you go icon_idea.gif

there's an easy trick actually. if you look at the barcode on one of the side of the boxes, you'll notice there's a 3-part number there. look at the most right one, then you'll get the price in yen!

as an example for this one;
user posted image

the numbers show "4200" (circled in red) indicating that the suggested retail price is 4200yen. have a quick check on Yen vs. RM exchange rate, and you'll get about RM120 (based on current rate). now you have the baseline price, and local shops tend to mark up a bit to cover their own shipment & operation cost, so look for the one that have the smallest difference (in other words, the one closest to the baseline price)

shops in Japan often sell below than the suggested price, so if you happen to have friends over there for sure you'll be getting a better deal!

if you happen to not be able to see for yourself the barcode, you can always check on online retailers like Hobbylink Japan website, and look at their "List Price" to find out the suggested retail price in yen.

then paint all of the white white parts to bling bling gold. and BOOM!!

i prefer non mirror coated on the kit.. its expensive, its fingerprint magnet, nub shows and just reflect almost everything n hides the details..
so puke gold works best for me for painting purposes..

Hey guys,

I've decided to try to paint by hand brush. Are enamels good for hand brush?

And are enamel paint the same as aqueous paint?

Think this way, special kit needs special handling. Wear gloves (and shades to prevent blindness).

Same principle as airbrush, you need to get the thinner ratio right. For hand brush I prefer acrylic, you just need water instead of thinner, but that's just me.

aqueos paint are acrylic I think. Enamel are usually better for handbrushing since they dry slowly so they get to level and hide the brush mark. Acrylic is also good as long as you are getting the one that are designed for handpainting. Airbrush type acrylic, like tamiya, dries pretty fast.

The tariff code is 9503.00.400 (PDK) or 9503.00.4000 (AHTN), sales tax is 10%. Usually if the quantity is only a few boxes (MG), even if it exceeds the 'guideline' of RM500, they will just let it go.

actually, the PG itself (not including the LED units that sold separately) is quite cheap... cheaper that the PG-fied MG Strike Freedom.
wonder why... hahahahaha

please, the MG Strike Freedom was terrible.. the PG at least looks more intimidating
however i'm still not saying it justifies the pricepoint whistling.gif whistling.gif

the number of parts in the PG Unicorn intrigues me.. the show of the LED makes me want it.. but maybe after i see some reviews and when i get some salary bonus whistling.gif whistling.gif

play the waiting game. I already lost the hype for it but seeing the CG rendered kit made me excited again. But must resist the PO game, there will be plenty of opportunity to get them (the yen rate today though is lower)

mind sharing how to top coat the unicorn..

would transform it to unicorn mode and top coat it would be ok?
or mask the clear parts and topcoat?

I'm impressed, it definitely has that PG proportion compared to some of the previous PGs (looking at you, SF and 00R!) Just waiting for a dose of good reviews and I'll get this for Christmas next year, with the LED unit laugh.gif

For a precious PG kit with lots of semi-clear parts like this, I would rather be careful and spray the armor and piece by piece laugh.gif

@golbeza: hah. The pbandai exclusive becomes a reality.

@nawar: unless you make the unicorn stay in only one mode, you may have to do both ways since there are parts that folds and swivels that might not expose during the topcoating process.

Sinanju can. Just look at all the robot damashii versions out there. Can P-Bandai extra weapons set (the bazooka), extra damaged head (like the RD), and for the sake of it, Sinanju Stein. cool2.gif

actually Bandai kinda planned to drop the PG line already, but the demand for a PG Unicorn is so high that they continue

after Unicorn, I can't think of any main protagonist MS that would garner much demand from fans for a PG kit
the only ones with higher chances in my opinion are Sinanju, Nu, and Sazabi

hope for PG sazabi is low... look at the complexity of the MG er. ka.

Anyway so far zaku is the only bad guy officially featured in PG line?

Because the time and money put into developing a PG does not give quick ROI. Sure they can remake the granddaddy and yes it will sell well but not nearly as much as the cheaper yet equally intricate MG counterpart specifically because its not really as affordable to the general masses.

It is the inherent problem of PG, going bigger more details more parts more plastics = more money. Price point is still the biggest hurdle when it comes to PG sales and not every1 grows money from a tree. PG is not really profitable compare to HG, RG and MG which is why u dont c PG having a stable releases.

Astray Red Frame's pilot is the MAIN protagonist of it's story
plus, PG ARF reuse a lot of parts from PG Strike, and since it has a large fan base and high demand for it, hence Bandai made it

all this discussion on PG unicorn but no one asked if it will be cheaper to buy now or after GST ?
*
It's the other way around, right now the sales tax for scale model is 10%, GST will only be 6%.

Since diesel and petrol are GST-exempted, theoretically it should be cheaper.

the real factor that will affect gunpla prices is the exchange rate of Yen

Conversion rate has a bigger impact than GST. Abe deliberately keep the Yen weak to combat recession but next year this could change. Dont really follow Japan politics and economy so i hav no idea what policy they will implement next year or will there be a new PM that will u-turn on Abenomics. (a new PM every year or 2 is very common in Japan, there hasnt been a stable PM since Koizumi so dont be surprise if Abe resign or whatever because of approval ratings or some scandals or whatnot)

Just think of it this way, right now Yen to RM has nvr been this low since 97, u buy now it is cheap. U buy latter it maybe cheaper.

Astray Red Frame's pilot is the MAIN protagonist of it's story
plus, PG ARF reuse a lot of parts from PG Strike, and since it has a large fan base and high demand for it, hence Bandai made it
Wing Zero also came out with PG first before MG, and also ended up quite 'fail'  whistling.gif

PG Astray one of the best things Bandai ever did haha. Yes, the pilot is its own protagonist from a manga/ova series. Isnt it awesome Red Frame is the only PG its series from manga? unlike other PGs so far.

PG wing is...horrible....maybe just my dream but I wish there is high demand for PG Z'gok Char's Custom lolz tongue.gif PG Sazabi is kinda overkill sweat.gif

I've been using el cheapo Mr. DIY plastic cutter, has been serving me for 8 months now. You should clean it by using alcohol-dipped Q-tips, and put the cap on. Zippo lighter fluid works well too.

yes it's taller whistling.gif

it's simple to calculate.. unicorn in destroy mode is 21.7m.. so 1/60 is about 36cm.. now all you have to do is measure your detolf whistling.gif

yes u can.. destroy mode pretty much has high heels so you can just keep the unicorn mode feet.. you can also opt to not extend the abdomen area to save a bit more space as well

thx for the info bro notworthy.gif

Anyway I already have problem with Strike Freedom, which was squeezed so hard into Detolf thanks to the wings. Didn't expect Unicorn will suffer similar problem.

aiks just realize a problem with Unicorn: This type of model kit which is 'transformable', you need to make sure you color the inner part of the armor as well, or else the no-color part will be revealed... (learn it the hard way from Sazabi, spent me extra 2 days to rectified it)

Now Bandai give me a green frame and I will make sure this to be the first PG I owned!! Do you think they will release one in near future? Somehow I always prefer the green frame compare to pink.

Nice set of photos HEREhere:

I really like when it is in Unicorn mode.. but the internal frame start to light up .. from the tiny gap before transformation thumbup.gif ! I must say for the first time, I prefer the overall proportion on this PG compare to the MG. Usually is the other way round.

notice the heels.

the ABF D uses the "standard" Astray feet but the 2nd Revise have the elevated ones with hidden blades in it

plus, the backpack for the ABF D is heavier so needed to position the legs at a wider stance so that it can stand properly (barely noticeable in the pic)

Basically there is nothing wrong, it's just that when you push the thigh joint into the crotch, the connection from the thigh joint to the knee joint gets loose. After you have managed to insert the crotch peg into the thigh joint, then only you connect the thigh and knee joint.
