QUOTE(izso @ Nov 12 2015, 06:14 PM) It breaks down fast. But what is true for me may not be true for you. Just keep your senses open for any differences in engine performance. Damn i didnt think about buying individual 1L bottle so i didnt gave them a second look. The spare parts shops are expensive. At least around my place la.And you must be damn unlucky, I saw a lot of 5W30 Shell 1L bottles at Aeon and then a lot of Elf semis at Tesco. And did you come across any Pennzoil brand oil at the spare parts shops? Perhaps you have one of those faces that look like you're a waterfish? |

QUOTE(chemistry @ Nov 12 2015, 09:24 PM) The last I got the 20W50 for RM35 back in 2013, may be it's recycle oil lar. But the oil is pretty darn good, I used it for 2 consecutive oil change with improved FC. Until, my magician say his supplier run away, he no longer carry that oil. |

I'm currently using the gold Titanium Kendall 5W30 FS. First impressions after running a few hundred KM now is how light it appears to be. A lot of people using Kendall have claimed better mileage and it's somewhat apparent on my car. But then again it's too early to tell and should let the oil run for at least 2000km before really making any judgement.
At RM40 a quart, it's not too expensive too. Cheaper than the ZIC mentioned earlier |

QUOTE(chemistry @ Nov 13 2015, 09:41 AM) It's not weird, bro. Perhaps the certification does not span outside America? How does API works in that sense? I do know that a different packaging would mean that manufacturer would need to re-certify their eo. For example idemitsu oil...same brand but different model also need to re-certify. (Asia = extreme eco, elsewhere = idemitsu fully synthetic oil)Certified but no donut is not wrong. Non certified but put donut is certainly wrong. Get my meaning? Also, your experience on Zic oil? I see that base oil stats isn't that bad. Does it break down fast in our weather? This post has been edited by douglas_tong: Nov 13 2015, 09:21 PM |

It's basically a certification and chances are there could be spot checks to make sure the actual product (not just the test product) meets the certification requirements. No experience in Zic other than hearing it being cheap /good value |

(Asia = extreme eco, elsewhere = idemitsu fully synthetic oil) API certification is still the dominant choice of oil maker in Asia. Most if not all Petronas engine oils are API certified, so are United Oil from Singapore. Also, your experience on Zic oil? I see that base oil stats isn't that bad. Does it break down fast in our weather? I have not used any ZIC oil so far. But the fact is, SK Group is a major producer of base oil worldwide. |

I'm using ZIC synthetic oil for my diesel engine for now. Seems alright for now. I'm just hoping that it'll be able to clean the engine better since it is a higher rated oil than the hyundai recommended CF rated shell helix.
But realistically, unless you're chasing high speed, high rev, high power, high loads, or your car has super picky engine, I believe one won't feel much difference even when using boutique brands. For us normal drivers, just change the engine oil and filter at correct intervals and pretty much that's it. I do however believe certain brands of engine oils can sustain longer change intervals than others. Again, the best way to prove is as per what Quazacolt did, do oil analysis. Or else, butt dyno is absolutely unreliable. My thinking is that, unless someone get those fake engine oils, even those lower end engine oils from established brands are still rather good. Normal consumers vote with the wallets first and foremost |
