I think his page on photographic how-to's are pretty well written. Although he can get quite obnoxious at times, but nonetheless a good resource.

A way to make a Digital Polarizer. A very good tutorial IMO. It helps others overcome the need to spend big bucks just to get the filter itself, now with photoshop, it can be done in just a few easy steps! Plus, you have a greater control over your final! smile.gif

my suggestion... shoot in color, then use the channel mixer in photoshop to make it black and white.

for dust and scratch mark, so far i've didnt see any filters that does the job. unless you put some texturized, transparent object infront of your subject. Or you can do it in photoshop again. Ill write down the technique in time. Or you can go google it out yourself biggrin.gif

This was previously posted on the sigma thread, but i guess its a good to share it with you guys too. smile.gif So here's the read.

This is what most ppl will do. Not much editing but with good results. I used an image of a forumer here for an example.

1st, To give it a little kick, boost the contrast. Go to photoshop > Layers > new adjustment layer > curves. Apply an "S" curves to the image. Like the picture below(pay attention to the points that i placed, You can increase the effects by applying a deeper S curve):
user posted image

Then use Levels. Go to photoshop > Layers > new adjustment layer > levels. See the picture for example:
user posted image
Here I pulled the highlights slider, which is on the right, just about near the inner end of the slope of the histogram "mountain". This will increase the highlights of the whole image. Then i go to the left side of the slider, which is the slider to tweak the shadows, i pulled it in a little, like what i did for the highlights, but different direction. Lastly I go to the middle slider, which is for the midtones, to darken the image by a little bit. The default value for this is 1.0, but I set it to 0.9, based on my liking.

You can use the preview button to see the before and after effects of the whole image. once you're done on every step, press ok.

That should add a little extra kick to the whole image. Make sure that you dont blow the highlights when you tweak the slider for the highlights. Here's my results:

After:

Hope this helps. smile.gif

p.s: this is also what some of the photographers call the "velvia look". Colors which are almost as the same from Fujifilm's Velvia series film. Which produce saturated colors with a whole lot of kick. biggrin.gif

Another way to do a "velvia" look with Photoshop is by tweaking with the Channel Mixer

Layer -> New Adjustment Layer -> Channel Mixer and set

Red:
Red = 150%
Green = -25%
Blue = -25%

Green
Red = -25%
Green = 150%

u mean the settings for the levels? It depends, really, there's 3 sliders.

The 1st slider(the left 1) determines the shadows, slide this to the right darkens the "blacks" in your photos. In some ways this enhance the contrast of your photos. But don't stop there.

The 2nd slider(the middle slide) is for your mid tones, if you slide this to the right, it darkens the overall brightness of your photo. Vice versa if you slide it to the left. I only tweak this slider once I'm finished with the shadows and highlights slider.

The 3rd slider(the one on your right) is where u boost the highlights, you can only go left to brighten the highlights(the "whites" in your image. Careful with this slider, too much of this will result in your picture being overblown; the white being too white. Mostly for me I do not want that to happen.

So 1st of all, start with your highlights slider. Tweak it a little according to your liking, but do not overdo it. Then work on your shadows slider to increase the blacks and contrast. Then finally work on the midtones. Hope this helps. smile.gif

p.s: Sometimes its good to let your imagination go wild. Try to experiment with the sliders, like what dgrebel did with this picture:

Though the highlights are blown to a certain level but it adds up to the mood of the overall photo. biggrin.gif

a simple tutorial on how to do this effect:

load a picture into photoshop, duplicate layer, mask it with hard light (at the layer blending options), go to filter and choose gaussian blur about 20% or more) for the duplicated layer and then set the opacity to about 85%, voila!

tips: for the solid colour, play with curves or hue and saturations.

A simpel "what i know about color space a.k.a sRGB or AdobeRGB or blah blah blah"

Adobe RGB has a wider, or you can put it "hidden" color range. Colors may looked pale when u see it on monitor. Thus its meant for more advanced editing. But mess up the colors then you'll have to start over again, so careful tweaking is needed.

Its the opposite for sRGB. Has so so color range, easy during editing but you wont get the most out of your photos. Colors are "richer" on the surface for sRGB, but you wont get the most out of it.

I use Adobe RGB, then convert them with a ProPhotoRGB profile in Lightroom. Because ProPhotoRGB gives me the best almost accurate colors when i print them out. And if I want to post the photos online. I'll just convert the color profile to sRGB using photoshop once I edited everything.

Things you must know when before you do editing. CALIBRATE your monitor. Spend a few hundred on calibrating hardwares like the Spider2express or newer versions. There's a good calibrating hardware like the Huey Pro too. Cost alot more than the Spider2express. Once you finished calibrating your computer, you get more accurate colors.

Note that the internet uses sRGB, so if you post a photo online with a AdobeRGB as the color profile. Then you'll face risk of losing the colors. Here's an example:

Sample A, Using AdobeRGB:
user posted image

Sample B, Using sRGB:
user posted image

So basicly:

#1: if you want to get the most out of your photos. Use AdobeRGB. It may look pale on your screen, but after a few adjustments, the colors are superb.

#2: Stick to sRGB if you rarely edit your photos, or you just do basic editing like levels and curves.

#3: Invest in a calibrating hardware. It comes with its own software so you can do easy step by steps on monitor calibration.

#4: Don't ask me about ProPhotoRGB. All i know that it has the widest color range known(for me). And the color quality of the print it produced is almost what i see on my monitor.

#5: Remember, if you wanna post your photos online and you're using the AdobeRGB profile. You can change them via photoshop. Go to Edit > Convert to Profile > Under "destination space" > select sRGB IEC 61966-2.1. Then save your photos. Then post them.

Hope this little info helps. smile.gif

actually ..i'm just using D70s for my office event only ... just learn the basic things with dslr ... i'm having problem with shooting pictures in room .. in order to get the natural colour without using flash .. i have to use Shutter Speed 1/20s and below ... the lowest Appature i can goes is 3.8 if i'm not mistaken .. using normal lense which is 17-80 mm (i think, need to check it out later  sweat.gif) ... the problem is when the subject is moving suddenly and the pictures not so good la ... i don't like to use flash coz don really know how to use it properly .. sumtimes the picture too bright and sumtimes not to bright ... is there any tips for this kind of situation or i just have to learn using the flash ?  sweat.gif
*
Learn to take teh picture using flash. Although if you only have the onboard flash your working distance is very limited to get good result. Too bright dial the flash compensation down and vice versa. Some people just totally hates flash which is totally wrong. doh.gif

Anyway here's a rather new site for tips. Comes with youtube video guide as well. Try it out.

im a total newbie and have a hard time looking for a step-by-step practical guide to photography, something i can read and try out with my camera at the same time.

i've gone thru alot of sites on the net, including the links on this thread, but can't remember coming across one that i wanted above.

until i find this:

http://www.bestphotolessons.com/

for example, check out the lesson 5 on depth of field.

so im just curious whether there're any other similar tutorial sites/guides like this out there in the net? preferably one with pictures/photos as well..and nothing about post-processing in photoshop etc pls...not interested in that yet smile.gif

here is probably the best practical site i've found so far:

http://www.morguefile.com/archive/classroom.php

with vivid pictures and explanations coupled with some exercises.

I would like to recommend a glossary for LYN Photography section on certain terms such as " bokeh, 'poison' " or other terms that is unique to LYN Photography section. Because I have no idea what they mean.

And they say learning DSLR operation is hard.

Need some help here.
I am using Panasonic Lumix TZ15,

i wonder, is anyone can tell me how to take a night picture? i means what setting should i set?

I did tried to use the scene mode and choose night scene .. but still not satisfied with it... abit blur.

another question is, how to take a moving object (quite fast) ... when i take a moving object... its just really blur and can even see clear of the object... again, what i want to know is the setting.

Thank alot and sry if this is annoying.

I know Its possible to do it with RAW files but then again it turns out differently than if I would take photos of dif exposures with a tripod and somehow whenever i use RAW and Photoshop>Automate>Merge to HDR> etc etc, it doesnt turn out HDRI-ish, so, help? biggrin.gif

The word bokeh originated from the japanese word "boke"(pronounced bo-keh) meaning blurred or fuzzy.
When shooting especially portraitures, photographers like to use shallow depth-of-fields to only focus on the subject while blurring out everything else. We call the blurred part "bokeh"
Bokeh can be achieved primarily by using a big aperture.
For further info, you can refer to this site http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bokeh

Actually it depends on how deep your interest is in photography. If u want a quick and nice photo without much hassle, get a digital camera. If you want to explore the maximum capability of photography and customize your camera, get a DSLR. biggrin.gif

I'm planning to get a Nikon D90. Reading through most threads here. Very informative tongue.gif

bokeh can be done wif point n shoot as well since bokeh means blurred background, even small amount of blur is bokeh.
It's the quality of bokeh u lookin at, Film SLR and DSLR have more capability of producing creamy nice bokeh.Easy, get one DSLR with a lens that have large aperture say f1.4 and wala,u get nice bokeh.

IMHO one of the things to consider is how much definition u want. If u use that lens wide open at 1.8, ur depth of field could be too shallow. I find that sharpness and usability of DOF is slightly better around f2.8-4, which is where i tend to be shooting from. Here's a fun thing to do: switch to black & white, crank ISO to max and shoot some portraits.

for the 50mm, it really depends what you want to shoot... if it's close up of items, 1.8-2.8 is really great to achieve a shallow DOF and allow your subject to be in focus. However, for portraiture, i find that 2.8 onwards is just nice (depends on the lighting available and your ISO settings)

I've just been blessed with a baby boy 2 weeks ago and the 50mm's all i've been using as it's very fast and can capture the 'cute' moments. you'd be surprised how many expressions a baby can make! great lens all around in all honesty- good price too.

i know that the aperture value is the amount of light that can pass through the lens. the larger the value, the smaller the amount of light can pass through.. (am i on the right track????)
the iso value is the camera's sensitivity to light.
so what is the relationship between these 2? i quote from canon's website.. "Changing the aperture affects the depth of field, while changing the shutter speed affects the freezing or blurring of motion." and i don't understand what does that mean... is there any additional knowledge that i need?

Well. I take example of Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G 3.5 is the largest aperture at 18mm while the smallest aperture at 18mm was 22, thus aperture of 3.5 will allow more light to reach sensor under the same lighting conditions compared to aperture of 22. It will give faster shutter speed under same ISO setting to give the correct light exposure on the sensor.

The ISO is the sensitivity of the camera sensor to light. Higher ISO setting eg ISO 800 will be more sensitive to the amount of light reaching sensor compared to ISO 100. Relating ISO to aperture, say when you want to take a night shot at ISO 100 under normal room lighting, maybe you need a lens with the 'bigger' aperture of 1.8 while with the ISO 800, you will be able to capture the similarly exposed photo use a lens using a 'smaller' aperture of 5.6 By the way, in photography terms 1.4 is a larger aperture that 2.8 and the 'bigger' the number, it means smaller aperture.

As for DOF, it's the portion of a scene that appears sharp in the image. The larger aperture will give a shorter DOF, thus of blurred background or item in front of focused subject. Smaller aperture will give a longer DOF.

Shutter speed: A fast shutter speed will be able to 'freeze' the fast moving object to make it appear sharp in the image but with a slower shutter speed, the same motion might be captured as blur 'moving' object in the image.

Hope the info helps and not confuse you more... smile.gif

Cheers,
William

i'm currently using nikon digital camera only, not SLR.
i have captured quite a few shots and it turned out dark with flash on.
i turned my ISO under auto, brightness under auto as well.

what's the difference b/w a macro lens and other lenses? I know macro lenses let you fill the frame without needing to get too close to the subject, but that can be done with a tele lens too, right? Like, I know wide is small 'mm' while tele is big 'mm', but where is macro? Google isn't helping...

it turns dark it is because your built-in flash in ur digi-cam doesn't gives enough light to reach ur object.
try to switch 'scenes' for different shoots.
example: go 'night mode' to shoot a fireworks scene.
the settings of ur cam doesn't fool u. =)

simple... learn how to use the scene selection on your pns(read the manual and learn how to use ur camera)...
then, juz start snapping. the more you take the better you become.
it will always help to view pictures taken by ur camera or other pns by other people to see what it is capable of.
sites such as flickr will definitely inspire you.

Could anyone enlighten me on how to make a far object appear near in a picture...?

For example a row of benches with some distance between them can look like they are just beside each other in a picture taken from slightly side ways.

In dark light, normally camera will select the shutter speed where enough life able to reach the sensor.
Even dslr having problem taking fast moving photos in dark light, basically u need to on the flash and keep aperture as big as possible.

If compact camera, I think that is the limitation.
That is also why people go for F200EXR and LX3 for compact camera, they are really good in lowlight.

I am no pro, but if I am not mistaken, read thru the manual, set your dial to P then adjust shutter speed via control dial (near the capture button) left and right to which speed that u want. See all thru ur LCD screen.

whoa...this thread has loads of useful info....but too bad the thread starter not updating the first post...

could a mod / staff update the 1st post? it would be easier for users to get the links rather than having to read through 9 pages....just a suggestion la...i know its somewhat adding more workload to the mod's / staff....cheers!

I watched this programme called Science in the Movies, i think.

There's one episode that tells you how to make your camera moving without shaking and producing noises.
What it at astro ch.554 i think.

Hi, do you all have any idea how to do the setting when taking a photo if I want to focus on a object and blur the background?

Is that use macro setting?

Is it nothing to do with the shutter speed and exposure?

sorry, another noob question, how to do macro setting? i need to change the scene to "flower" sign? and that's it?

focus on object and blur background...the correct term is shallow depth of field. macro setting (yes the flower sign) should do that. try to position urself to snap so that the background is far away...the further the background, more blur it gets

shutter speed and aperture are two different ways to adjust exposure. depth of field has nothing to do with shutter speed... it's all about aperture. if u're using a manual camera, find a way to use a bigger aperture setting. normally this is by using the A or Av mode, and turn DOWN the aperture number (smaller number is bigger aperture)

Im using panasonic zr-1, I couldn't adjust aperture, that's why i want to know is there any way to snap a object (person) like using bigger aperture..
I tried macro mode, but the effect is not good..
AFAIK canon camera can change the mode to "A" (aperture mode), but my camera can't.. cry.gif

u mean photo? tongue.gif got several ways in photoshop... make a selection of the part u want coloured, invert selection, then decrease saturation to 0

or (as i prefer) create another layer on top of the original layer, decrease saturation to 0, and erase the part u want coloured

To be honest, to get a DSLR below 1k is quite unreasonable. even a better digital compact camera cost more than that.

Maybe you'll have some luck in film type SLR but that in the end will cost you more on the film.

Budget of RM1.5k to 2k would be a more reasonable range (at least for a used DSLR)

hi everyone, i'm a newbie..loves taking photograph for fun. and was looking at people's flickr for inspiration. anyway, i stumbled upon sb's flickr:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/eagle1effi/3299969428/

..and was reading the description below. it says, 'velvia film' - daylight-balanced color reversal film. but what baffled me was that, if you scroll at the camera used to take this photo, it says Canon SX1 IS, which is a digital semipro.

can anyone help me as to why this is so? i mean, what does it mean?? film but using digital??? semipro somemore, not dslr.

do you mean on organizing your photos?
lightroom is a very good photo organizing suite.

or you mean putting your copyright/label/keyword inside your photo's EXIF?
if so, then you can try program called Exifer. it's free and it does what you want to.

hope it helps blush.gif

Yes, I agree with wk1168.
Lightroom is a good photo organizer and for putting your copyright mark on your photos, use Exifer.

yeah.. just keep shooting.. practice makes perfect..

at the same time go play with (M) manual mode.. start by playing with the exposure and apreture.. then try to use natural lighting and set your iso as low as possible.. (i hate noise in my photo.. anything more than 400iso i cannot take it)

haha.. when i 1st started i keep taking photo of everything n anything i see around!! haha eventually u'll pick up alot of stuff n learn alot from there too..

First thing first, what system you are at? and what is your budget as well. Try posting in http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1247191 instead. You will get better responses there.

Well, back to the topic blush.gif

Here's my little pet project called mylensdb.com rclxms.gif

You can explore some of the photos taken by those zoom lenses grabbed from flickr at my project site here. By then you may get the rough idea on what you can expect from the particular lens. Also, you can find photos by body as well as by lenses. You may also check prices there too. nod.gif

Hopefully it will help you somehow someday sometimes. thumbup.gif

easiest to do that...set to Portrait mode tongue.gif quite hard to achieve that using compact lah. if DSLR, auto also can get that picture hehe

lighting doesnt have to be flash...sunlight can also

manual settings doesnt mean the picture will look good...in fact, it increases the chances of a photo to be bad tongue.gif

1st, use focal length about 30-50mm like that. try to use Aperture priority mode, set to the lowest F-number u can go. if u're using the 18-55 kit lens, shud be around 4 or 5.

get someone to pose like that for you. get as close as you can (get nearer, dun change ur focal length) until the left hand is almostttt out of the frame. compose ur shot, n focus on the right arm. that way, the left hand will be blurred. this is caused by the distance of ur focus point (the right arm) and the left hand.

actually you can make the left hand more blur by using 18mm focal length because of two reasons: 1) 18mm will exaggerate the length between ur focus point and the left hand, and 2) u can use a bigger aperture like F3.5. but then this will make the left hand look huge~

yeap. actually it's "wider aperture lens make the effect easier". those f1.4 or 1.8 prime lens is perfect for the job. a fast zoom like 17-55 f2.8 also can

Hey ppl, I am new to DSLR too.. Head big liao from all the stuff and settings I need to learn.. rclxub.gif

I got two questions:

- Can anyone tell me something about white balance filters? Where can I get them? If I am doing mostly outdoor shots, I do i really have to get them instead of using the Camera's auto white balance or cloudy/shade modes?

- Should I shoot photos as RAW or JPG format? I know that RAW formats allow more room for post-photos processing, but I am a noob at it and I feel that neither do I really have the time to do much post-processings.. JPG format really do cause visible loss in image quality?

Thanks in advance rclxub.gif rclxub.gif

1) i might be wrong here, but i think white balance filters are for film cameras. for digital cameras we can juz change the WB setting. we still need coloured gels for flash though.

2) "visible loss" is subjective... can you see the difference? i don't, so i juz snap JPEG. we shudnt worry too much about quality..there are great photos out there winning awards but it's not technically "good quality" at all. if a photo is good, even thumbnail also look nice smile.gif the only time u might wanna use RAW is in low-light conditions...PP can salvage RAW shots better

by dull u mean less saturation? like the photo is black n white (or almost) but only the subject is in colour? i dont think any dslr got that function. but very easy to do in photoshop

required post processing for that effect..

if you want the entire pic to have a saturated look, you can change saturation setting by giving a minus (-) value.

read up and you will know what you need to know tongue.gif

UV
A multi-purpose fine-weather filter
Absorbs the ultraviolet rays which often makes outdoor photographs hazy and indistinct. A multi-purpose,
fine-weather filter for color as well as black and white films. Also serves as a permanent lens protector.

CIRCULAR PL
Color and contrast enhancement
Light rays which are reflected by any surface can become polarised so polarising filters are used to select which light rays enter your camera lens. CIRCULAR PL filters allow you to remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water, glass etc. They also enable colors to become more saturated and appear clearer with better contrast. This effect is often used to increase the contrast and saturation in blue skies and white clouds. HOYA's polarising filters do not affect the overall color balance of a shot.

I'm looking for a budget best all-rounder flash diffuser for Nikon SB-600. Been reading a few reviews on flash diffusers. Any site to recommend for further reading or suggestion for a good all-rounder flash diffuser for most situations? I'm currently looking @ lambency flash diffuser and the standard omnibounce flash diffuser. Hmmm....

Hello all,

I have been facing a problem and hope i could find a real answer here.

I am a D90 owner, however i notice that when i open RAW file with software like Photoshop or Lightroom, the quality of RAW picture will degrade. Picture that will become blur and greyish. However when i open with Nikon software ( RAW as well) , the picture looks normal.

anyone of you know what is the problem ?

Thanks

Try the 3rd party Stofen flash? Quite handy..
Lambency is quite heavy, but performance and result is good.

I was once told by a sifu that diff softwares might render RAW files slightly differently, resulting in slightly diff tones/colors.
Perhaps after edit/convert, can u get the same end result?

I think FF would distort more compare to crop sensors on certain lenses since FF covers more of the corners and edges...

I want to know photo like this is require PS or manual settings on the camera?
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Any mode can do. I would use Aperture priority mode or Manual mode most probably.
PS edit is definite for the color effect...
The key to this photo is the shallow depth-of-field and the composition, then the color effect to create the mood.

Knowing where to p place the various elements in your images is basic to great composition and unless you can master this your images
will be average You need to grasp these fundamentals early in your journey as you learn digital photography.
A great photo is a result of a great composition.

Normally I would just directly walk straight towards the subject and ask~ "miss, may I take a photo of u~?"
well,nt sure does this work for u or nt but it work well for me coz I only take photo of cosplayer n they sure let u take a few shot if ask nicely~

Thx for the tip chinti smile.gif
but I think cosplayer are usually easier to approach.. since they are usually in an event..which there are alot of photographer also. And they should already know that there will be people wanting to take treir picture..

but How if it was people on the street? those who dont expected any photoshot.. let take example street of KL, and you are not even from a magazine company.. how do you tell your target, that you wanted to take her photo?

any idea or better experience?

from my opinon
thats where 70-200 (s) lens come in handy. If you need to ask then its falls into the P N S category. DSLR is so fast that even u take someone photo nobody will notice that fast

I'd love to say, "Learn Photoshop Elements or Lightroom 3" but I guess you can Google out the tutorial and tips.
If you want hands on, you should ask someone who can give you training for photo editing.

I'm not a pro.. but here's how I started last time.

"By reading the product manual, DSLR manual book"

It explains a lot there. And if you want more info, it's always good to visit their site every now and then.

If you're asking whether it's compulsory or not, No.

For me, it's more for protection, and secondly, it works great to reduce sun flare when shooting outdoors.

You can think of it this way. A cheap filter costs like RM80, if it's got scratched, you can spend a little extra money to buy one.

If your RM2k lens itself get scratched, chances are, it may be not repairable, and there goes your luxury lens becoming a broken paperweight.

Anyway, my Sifu from one of the photography class I attended said no need to attach the filter. The photo quality may be blemished. Hurm...

Maybe he has his own thoughts.

filters do somewhat decrease the image quality. anything you put in front of the lens will affect image quality. the question is, is it noticeable.
cheap UV filters are what ppl buy usually. and while they add a measure of protection, it may cause reflections and hence affecting the image. that's why there are different brands and price range.

I assume we are talking about UV filters only. These days it might not be necessary. In the old times, films are more sensitive to UV light, which cause haziness to be seen in prints. These days, digital sensors and newer films are less sensitive to UV light, so there is no need for one unless it's a very hazy day.

So in essence, yes, it's only for protection.

I always have this problem, memory capacity vs battery life. I have 2 Nikon batteries and a 4gb memory card. Its quite frustrating that usually my memory gets full even before my 1st battery reaches da limit. So I'm planning to get a 8gb or 16gb memory card instead. Which suits my battery capacity more? Photo ratio would be 20% RAW, 30% jpeg flash and 50% jpeg w/o flash. Any memory card brands and models in specific to recommend?

If you are looking for a good photography book that is easy to understand especially for the beginners I suggest find the book entitled,"Digital Photography All-in-One Desk Reference For Dummies" It is very reader-friendly.You acn also get some tips from different fields of photography that you might need when you start venturing into different subjects as well. I say though that experience is really the best teacher that is why i suggest that you really click your heart away and see how the pictures work out for you. good luck!

"Digital Photography All-in-One Desk Reference For Dummies" is very good book for beginner and it is very easy to understand with some of the real picture example as well. The book cost around RM127.

possible. usually for compacts, you can go into macro mode.

if not also zoom as much as you can, then have the subject be as close as you can too.

There's one site I go to... FroKnowsPhoto.com... They use NIkons though. So, some might feel slightly alienated but a lot of their stuff's about general photography and techniques. They also have a YouTube channel that's pretty good. Just search FroKnowsPhoto on YouTube and it should pop up. Hope this helped. Cheers!

Hi guys,
need a lil help here,
i just wanna ask, why does my pictures towards the right edge tends to be blurry?
i notice it occuring several times over several photos i took in the past 3 months...
is it because of my lens (its bout 2 years old, and it has taken several bumps before accidentally)
or is it because of my settings/object movement? icon_question.gif

i'm currently using a d7000 with 18-200mm lens...

here's a few photo samples:

Hi AphrealJC,

I believed the effect is caused by the filter you used. You may removed your lens filter and try shooting without it. It is important to get a reputable and quality filter for your lens. My recommendation is to get a Nikon UV filter for your lens.

you can check the lyn mart or any nearby camera shops around your house... but if youre asking what model you should get, get a prosumer first. any pns that allows PSAM modes qualify as this

I'm using a 7D i'm not sure whether the buttons layout will be the same, but i will try. when u grip your camera, there will be 2 buttons behind ur shutter button but only accessible by the thumb, press that button to select those AF type, then press the button in front (next to your shutter) and select till u see in your viewfinder alot of red tiny dots, then the scroll button nnear to your index fingers and the rotating dial near to your thumb is use to select the focus point. hope this helps tongue.gif

Think so this is affected by the filter as well, or smudges? try taking photos without the filter and see?

Mostly i shoot in Aperture priority mode when shooting sports, get high ISO as high as possible like between 1600 to 6400, biggest aperture u can get with your lens, since ur shutter speed will be auto assign by the camera, u just need to make sure ur aperture is big (f2.8 ~ f4) , filter has nothing to do with this except contributing in glares of the spot light. Don't think u can use flash as often cuz u wil be rapid firing and the flashes normally couldn't charged up that fast.

This is not for the faint of heart. Use a clean lenspen (I've done this before, do this at your own risk), set the camera to sensor cleaning mode, the mirror will flip up. Carefully, use the sponge edge of the lenspen and wipe it from left to right in one smooth movement without putting too much pressure. Only go one direction until complete coverage of whole sensor. Test at small aperture again to check if dust is still there. A disclaimer: do this at your own risk.

Hi, Pls use Spoiler for yr pics so that the page loads faster for others..

Pls let us know the settings you use for those pics..

What is the Aperture / Shuttle Speed / ISO and zoom / flash use for those pics.. ?

Zoom lens usually are sharp at the centre and less sharp/soft at the edges...

If you read reviews on yr Nikon 18-200mm lens, it should give similar conclusions...

What is your priority? portrait/still life/indoors or "landscape"? Notice the "" on the landscape? That's because using a fisheye for landscapes will only get you a WOW factor for a couple of shots. After that, it'll become dull and cliche. For landscapes, you're better off getting an ultra wide angle ie. Canon 10-22mm, Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8, Tamron 10-24mm, Sigma 10-20 just to name a few.

I'd suggest you get a flash first. Preferably Canon's own flash.

hmm.. that is very true. what is the reason behind your suggestion of me getting a flash first?

Let's say, if i choose to go for the lens first. In between the Sigma and Tamron, which one would you choose and why?

Thanks once again for answering my questions.

A flash will help out a lot for indoor shots, portraits (filling in shadows, eliminate red eye etc.), macro...

As for either Sigma or Tamron, I'd suggest the new Sigma 10-20mm F3.5 EX DC HSM. Constant aperture, HSM (not so important for landscape photos anyway, but what the heck), new coatings.

But if there's extra cash, I'd recommend the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8. Shorter range, but the constant f/2.8 is some what more useful.

Thanks for your comment and suggestion. It is very much appreciated. The new Sigma is above my budget so whatmore about Tokina's. I'll go for Tamron's because it's a F 3.5 aperture as compared to Sigma's F4.0 (the one at the same price range.)

To all P filter user.

If you are using this pocket filer, Please remove all your P filter and throw this pocket away.

if you intend to get one of this. Please do not get it at all cost. It will cause further damage to your P filter.

Hi.. may i know how u all set if you were trying to capture picture of night view/landscape? i only have 18-105 f3.5-5.6 kitlens to begin with. isit good to get big aperture ~f3.5 so that a faster shutter speed can be used, so image would not turn out blurr, oh forgot to mention without a tripod too! or use medium aperture F7-9 and slower shutter speed? does it affect the sharpness/clarity of the shots if bigger aperture is used?

with that lens your choice seems limited to tripod
if use big aperture afraid your landscape will not be sharp enough...
and f3.5 seems not fast enough for low light

my 1 cent

Do you mean to do "bokeh"? To blur your background and foreground and only left your subject sharp.

Poor people's way. Get a Zoom lens, for example a Tamron 70-300mm and shot at aperture f5.6 and enjoy the bokehness.

Rich man play. Buy a 70-200mm f2.8 fixed aperture and shoot at f2.8.

Or with kit lens. Can try longest focal length and widest aperture f stop (Smallest Aperture f number).

Cheers and happy "bokeing"........ icon_rolleyes.gif

DOF is a formula to do "Bokeh".

The definition for depth of field (DOF) is the distance between the nearest and farthest objects in a scene that appear acceptably sharp in an image.

DOF is not a formula to bokeh.

DOF is the area in focus. Simple as that.

Bokeh is the area that are out of focus.

In photography, the priority is always DOF - that's where you get the subject to be covered enough to maintain the details, the bokeh is just the result of everything else.

this definition is correct though. Basically the area that is in focus.

hi sifus, noobie here. Just wanna ask, im using nikon d3200, 18-105mm kit, can i choose S mode (shutter speed mode) when i'm in a restaurant (room based), which is those amber lighting/yellow light. without using flash.

as i tried without flash, i can tune my own shutter speed, but shoot out is just a dark image. if open flash, shutter speed will limit and slow like 1/20 or 1/30.

any sifu understand what i trying to explain ? sad.gif

how can i use shutter mode in those above mentioned room.

any reason you particularly want to use S mode?

u have to remember shutter speed is just one out of 3 that controls exposure...the other two are aperture and ISO. in a dark area, you would want to get as much light in as possible.

try this, use A mode. set aperture to the maximum (f/3.5 for ur lens, need to use 18mm focal length), and set your ISO to maybe 1600. set a shutter speed of about 1/25s. shoot first, and if still too dark, use a slower shutter speed. you might reach a point where u need a certain slow shutter speed (maybe 1 s?) but you cant handhold you camera well enough. if u run into this issue, either learn to steady yourself, get a small tripod, or get a lens with a larger max aperture smile.gif

or just use flash hehe

For that kind of light i think you have to take the picture during the golden hour period (one hour after sunrise and one hour before sunset). If not you have to change the temperature in lightroom to make it warmer (golden).Hope this helps smile.gif

highly recommended lynda.com for basic to advanced photography skills, as well as ps and lightroom skills.

unfortunately need to pay USD25. if your computer can 'memorize' the videos, then its worth more than that.

Hello guys, I's not sure whether this is a correct thread to ask this.

Between mirrorless and DSLR, which one is the best in term of :

1)Ergonomic (Big body is tougher?)
2)Picture quality( Will focal length affects picture quality?)
3)Long term usage (future proof or not?)
4)Ability to fit several occassions (weddings, jungle, etc)

I've read several blogs but I'm still clueless on which camera should I get. Used to own a DSLR but not mirrorless.

I've found this useful and easy tutorial for portraiture
basic points are

"Here's a checklist you can follow for your next shoot.

Hair is behind one shoulder, in front of the other
Chin is forward to create a strong jawline
Arm is lifted from the torso
Waist doesn't have any visual extenders
Shoulders are turned
Iris is seen over the whites
Nose doesn't break the line of the face"

There are a few existing thread about mirrorless vs DSLR. U can use the search function.

1) big body not necessarily tougher.

Olympus mju series (SW) are small but shockproof. Mirrorless Fujifilm XT-1 is well built, magnesium body, so does A6000, magnesium alloy.

I understand "ergonomic" as comfortable design, functional design, and user-friendly system.

From experience, some mirrorless cams are dun have good grip and can be uncomfortable to handle for long period but many can be improved by adding handgrips.

2) Picture quality (image quality = IQ) is depending on sensor size, lens & many other factors, which can be very personal. Different people, different level of qualitative expectation. Mirrorless IQ is quite good (at least for me).

3) Technology changes every year, or every quarterly, at least. How to be future proof? The limit is your learning curve and skills. It is like buying computer/laptop/handphone. Highly subjective to personal preference.

4) Different lenses for different occasion. Body can be same.

kit lens macro ability is not very good but decent
try to look up the internet the nearest distance for focus of your lens
you can now take the shot at that distance and crop the photo in-camera or software

Hi, I don't know where to post this so I'll give this thread a go. Don't mind me necroposting.

I have a manfrotto pixie evo:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1178...ini_tripod.html

And my strap is the:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1169...strap_lite.html

As you can see, the strap comes with an arca swiss plate. If I use this plate on the camera, I cant use the tripod since it uses an allen key.

So my question is, is there such thing as a quick release plate that I can attach to the tripod so that I can use them both together? I am new to this tripod related things.

Thanks for any help.

EDIT: Is this the one I should be looking for? http://www.lazada.com.my/neewer-40mm-metal...ck-7338118.html

Possible... I hv a similar QR plate as what you show.. But some models may require an thread adapter.. easy enough to get from most major camera suppliers.. and cheap.. I think it is 3/8 to 1/4 inch step down.

IT will add bulk and weight to the system and may defeat its compact size.. Do consider that ..

try some china brands or 2nd hand ones first, if you really like the effect and you do need something higher quality, then buy hoya or whatever

Do you have any quality ones as comparison? like from photo shooting group or friends etc.
if not, it's difficult to gauge the quality of the filter based solely on your experience since you don't have anything to compare
some china ones are ok but qc is questionable..

Hi,
Newbie here,
hope this is the right place to ask.

I have a Lumix DMC GF7.
from the advertisement video, it suppose to be good in self portrait.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7Its1OnGKI

but i think so far the self portrait shot is not satisfied, if compare to if taken by a person (which make sense).
But could be even worse compare to self portrait taken by phone.

Most of the picture are over exposed (too white at the background), not nicely focus (background too blur).
So i just want to know, is it my setting problem?

try this, zoom out to the widest, such as 24mm or 28mm
dial to auto mode, use timer
now one more shot but this time use force flash and timer
how's the result?

Thanks for the suggestion.
I will try it out.
Ok if i post some image here? Or i move it to some other sub topic.

I am not really a selfie person and didnt expect to use it for so much selfie when buying this mirrorless.
But just went Europe travelling recently. So a bit frustrated with those not statisfied pictures. It has not much problem focusing on the "person face".. But the background is just... Not statisfied.

Anyway i will play around with it more and see. Tq.

I was trying to be sarcastic but I guess that failed. You need to tell a bit more like r u using auto setting, beauty mode or whatnot and some sample pic? Us ordinary folks can't read your mind u know.

that's the cheapest way to make sure the equipment are dry, no harm doing it but it may not be sufficient if the space is too big
but as you know, proper dry box can be set to certain dryness to prevent fungus growing and rubber cracking (in case of overly dry)

Hi, guys. I'm not exactly familiar with Kuala Lumpur despite knowing it as the capital of Malaysia. That said, do you know where I can take some scenic pictures (streets, architectures, historic places, people, etc) of the city? It'd be best if it's accessible by LRT/Monorail.

Thanks for your suggestions! icon_rolleyes.gif

Hi, for night show, how do you guys focus on both the people and the background which has some light objects? If you focus on the person, the background will not be clear. If focus on background object, the person will not be clear.

usually, the camera tends to open up the lens aperture as much as it can to maximize the light capture at night, this will make the depth of field smaller, hence you cannot focus BOTH the front and the background in sharp focus

you can try set the appropriate aperture value to be able to capture both but the ISO will increase and the shutter speed will decrease
ISO raised means poorer picture quality, lower shutter speed means easily blurred pictures

if your camera cannot get you a satisfactory picture, try shooting the scene using black and white while bump up the ISO to very high, this way, you may get sharp pictures and can focus both front and background, happy testing

What about using manually flash for the front object then focus on the far object at night?

if the background objects are well lit, you might be able to get them both in focus if you use smaller aperture
the flash will hit the front objects and bounces back but not much light bounces back from the background
use manual setting, make sure both front and back in focus, and fire up the flash, you might get lucky if the background image comes back well lit

the result really depends on the quality and size of the lens and sensor
not all camera created equal
keep shooting and experiment with different settings

I always liked photography. It seems to me to be magical, when you can capture the moment of life and leave it with you forever, not only in the memory, in the photo, or in the photo. I like the work birmingham birmingham photographers. I think you will like it too, you can take a look wub.gif

Hi guys. I'm playing around with videos using my mobile phone. I hv seen ppl taking videos using just the phone and editing the videos to look very clean and "tv-like". I hv tried editing with premiere Pro or other softwares but I couldn't get that kinda look.

Appreciate some sifu to give some pointers on how to edit phone taken videos to give it that clean look? Normally what kind of settings to pay attention? Contrast, colour grading etc?

I want to learn the video editing techniques such as this guy :

Watch some youtube videos out there. There are a lot of great youtubers that teach good tutorials. Check out Peter Mckinnon. You can learn a lot there. His two minutes tuesday series was great.
