The rear derailleur was not a Neos but a Suntour which was shaped similarly. This plasticky rear derailleur is really lousy! I am not sure if this was the standard RD for the Tern Link D8. Suntour maybe good in suspension forks but they still need a lot of improvements on their RDs.

Luckily I still have the original Neos 8 speed from my Boardwalk. She switched to the Neos.  Those intending to buy Terns, especially the Link D8, check the RD.

Mind to share some images and also whre did you get the headlamp from? Many many thanks in advance!  notworthy.gif

this is exactly what i got, as posted in of the post earlier

pretty solid, full brightness can go up to 2 hrs before it dims a little bit n finally goes off around the 3 hr mark

for the 50% brightness mode, it stays that way constantly for about 7 hrs half before the red warning sign appears n this goes on for about 45 mins before going off completely

not too sure how bright or wide it can shine cuz i only have this so far

QUOTE(budgee @ Sep 12 2013, 08:38 PM)
Hah,  now this forum is getting to be very hot... more and more foldables are being bought.  Pretty soon, we will be able to see more and more foldies riding in the city, parks, gardens,  ... going to work...  going to the shops...
Once you get your new bike, be sure to ride slow in the beginning, learn its various functions, change gears, learn the balancing part during stopping the bike and during cornering.

And if you ride at night, Lights are very, very important!    Don't ride unless you have a rear light.  The front lights can be a small torch light tied down to handlebars..  But the rear light should be red and this will be your life saver.
I finally bought a knog blinders rear... but expensive nya...      yup, I can go night riding with a clearer mind now!  The battery life is great!!  rclxms.gif
user posted image

I did buy the knog blinders front much earlier, but like you said, the battery life is a little short.  doh.gif

but the saving point is that it is bright enough for really dark roads..

i really think we shld have a 1st post info etc!

btw guys make sure ur headlight dsnt blind other road users

do a field test, get down from ur bike n put urself in front of it n the light, if it's blinding u then it's blinding other users n that is very dangerous for everyone

don't skimp on lights indeed if u ride at night, those can save our ass n lives

This evening a riding kaki brought her Tern Link D8 for me to tune the rear derailleurs as the chain was skipping between cogs. When the bike was here, I was suprised! shocking.gif  First the gear cables was frayed and the cable stub was just a mere inch left!  shocking.gif  She said she never touch any adjustments. It's really shocking to see that a main dealer having their posh outlet in Sea Park can sell the bike without proper adjustments. They sell straight out of the box. The first ride she had after getting the bike, the mudguards fell off! I was a witness to that. Until today, there was more shock to come. The rear derailleur was not a Neos but a Suntour which was shaped similarly. This plasticky rear derailleur is really lousy! I am not sure if this was the standard RD for the Tern Link D8. No way, will I allow such people to work on my bike. If you don't like your job, change it lah, don't take it out on customers.

Here is some of my comments. This is my first foldie and my experience may be differ from others and

- everything seem solid. a good ride
- it bouncy. i think the tyre is too slim and my weight (80kg) i feel it through my spine. my rim is little bend already
- the chain is noisy only when the back gear is on the end (either far left or far right). when in the middle, it didn't sound a bit.
- the handlebar is mis-align with the front tyre.
- seat post is loose.
- it seem the paddle also loose. i might too heavy for the paddle also.

everything seem fine.
*
Regarding the sound from the gear, I have the same experience too.

Actually I knew it at the time I bought the bicycle but the shop owner (young guy) seems like doesn’t really know how to adjust it and I choose to live with it. Partly because my experience with my road bike, in the past I can hardly adjust the derailleur until there is no sounds for all the gear combination.

For one of my Trinx, the chain touch the front cage plates (and here comes the noise) with the gear combination: the back gear set to smallest (and second smallest) and the front gear set to the bigger gear (the 52T)

For the other bike, the chain touch the front cage plates when the gear combination: the back gear set to the largest and the front gear set to the smaller gear.

May be I should get some experienced sifu to help to adjust. Those days I simply adjust myself and some time it caused problem during gear shift, which the chain stuck in between gear.

Ahh.. Not surprising when the Sea Park shop's "tech" guy was merely a cycling enthusiast.

And yes, the RD used on the LD8 is a Suntour RD. Cost issue la..

By right, the bike shop should first, do a pre-delivery inspection and tune-up before selling the bike to your friend...

But all good things said and done, when you have a half-assed technician, that's what you get.

Anyway, good on you Wong Seefu, on addressing the problem.. thumbup.gif

SR Suntour manufactures components as well aside from suspension forks and dampers. One apparent upgrade is their "soap bar" folding pedals on the Terns because many of the Wellgo pedals actually broke..

user posted image

The broken Wellgo pedals..

So, that said, its no surprise why the Suntour RDs are so frail. Some riders broke their RDs on the Dahon Visc 18 and Dash P18. This prompted a recall and a replacement..

Ah, this one is a "touchy-feely" subject.. The Tech guy still behaves like a Bicycle God even though his background is merely a cycling enthusiast. What is shocking is the fact that he actually meddles with other people's bikes and charges a fee..

The boss of the shop is not bad, she is now well-known among the folding bike circle. Even the media has hailed her as a darling among the cycling community..

After a week riding the Dahon Eco C7 which I get from etigge, the feeling of riding it is very good rclxms.gif. It is already very sufficient for me to move around campus area, planning to have a ride for a longer distance soon xD~

QUOTE(earl-ku @ Sep 13 2013, 11:59 AM)
Anyone wanna put up a beginners guide to foldies?

1) price range wise
Price issue is the most important criteria in determining which bike to acquire. Price ranges from a mere RM350 for an Aloueca, RM500 for an Oscar Imagine and RM850 onwards for XDSes, RM950 for Louis Garneau Pop  and
then RM1180 for Dahons and RM1280 for Terns. This are the base prices for the brands. While I am an ardent Dahon fan, even the better and newer Terns don't really interest me, I don't want to sound too bias. There are
those who are not so technically inclined who buys a bike 'one time off'. Means that's it, no more upgrading!

Then comes budget. The Trinx and XDS are good compromise for specifications in terms of price but don't expect it to last forever though. You can ride a few years on it but maintenance will be a bit more. Keep a look out for
frame noises as the clamping and handle post systems are not as reliable as the Dahons and Terns. A 16 speed (dual chain ring) Trinx is less than RM1000 but if you want the same spec on a Dahon, be prepared to pay
RM2400  and Tern cost even higher. So, buy according to your budget. At least it's a start! At least after gaining experience, you will know what you want from a folding bike and you will also appreciate the price that you pay.

2) brand wise
It's never wrong to go with Terns and Dahons and off course there are those boutique bikes ( I call them that) like Oribikes, Birdy's, Bike Friday, Bromptons etc. They are good no denying that but they are never better in
handling or maintenance or in any other way. In fact some requires more maintenance which is costly! The bikes itself are costly. If you can afford, then by all means. Then those cheaper ones like Raleighs, Polygons, XDS are
also from reliable manufacturers but they don't guarantee your bike. They are just mass produced. They can last provided you take good care of it.

3) what to look out for when buying your foldies
    01. The price off course, according to your budget.
    02. Look at the folding clamp. There should be no movement and looks solid. Ease of releasing the latch is also important. You don't want to clamp the tip of your skins as well when you fold!
    03. The wheelset. This is the most expensive upgrade. Try get with double layer rims and there are double layered ones but heavy! A light rim can change a ride drastically. Even the entry level Dahons comes with single
layered rims but at least they are light. But they don't look nice and it can also last a life time if you don't bump around too hard. Falling off and accidents , any rims can 'bengkok', right?
    04. Gearing. Some managed to finish the CFAL with just a single crank and 8 speed and some have not enough even with 27 speed. So, research about it and find out about your requirements. Woman riders like my wife
can't really pedal hard or rather they get tired fast when pedal hard, so the more gears the better. So, even in hill climbs the force needed is still the same at the same cadence.

4) mods recomended
Usually original brakes are lousy! That's the first thing you should change, especially the newer Dr.Hons. You can then add gear ratios but this is an expensive upgrade. At times, after modding like mine, it actually cost more
than I buy one that is the same spec BUT there will some components that you don't like. Eg. I don't like Neos RD even if they are 8 or 9 speed. I still prefer Shimanos. So, I prefer upgrading myself so I can choose and
install my favourite components although sometimes getting it does not improve anything.  tongue.gif  Lighter rims makes riding much much easier. But sadly choices for foldies are very limited here and those that do stock them will
lead you into a pen and slaughter you! Hahaha. icon_question.gif  Tyres wise, some like easier riding so they go for slicks like Duranos and Kojaks while I like Maxxis. It all depends on yourself.

5) accesories recomended - I would do this
The usual lah! Water bottle cage and bottle, front and rear lights (some really spend money for this shocking.gif ) I instead go for the cheapest reliable ones I find. I mean the lights are actually for others road users to see you
and not for you to see, primarily. Unless off course you go trail riding at night, like they do in Kiara, then a bright front light is recommended. Other than that a blinker will do. Note that, a guy can even see your lighted
cigarette in the dark from 1 km away if it is dark. No need to go blinding others! Since riding, I have broke or lost 3 front lights already. Imagine if it cost RM200+ for each. I also bought twice the SR rear lights that goes
cliking into the same branded seats. Both cracked open after a month! So, better to stick to cheapos! blush.gif

6) places to ride your foldies from easy trails to hard trails
Anywhere you wish to ride lah. But better if you have the power of the pack!

Cycling has also ascended to the level of many other sport! It's more of what you have rather than what you can achieve.  Hopefully you don't get into the same trap. That's why road bike components are so expensive. Hahahaha! They prey on such idiosyncrasies. If 10 grammes lighter is worth a thousand bucks for you, then go for it! In Formula 1, it's important because every driver is driving at the same level and every gram and every advantage counts. The gains are also in the milliseconds. SO does our foldies! tongue.gif  Hahaha. I don't think I can match Lance Armstrong or Roland Green. I think I ride like a cheapskate and stay at the back lah!  rclxm9.gif

Write them up here and I will place on first post for every noob...
