not a silly question, its one of the most commonly asked as well
cause SSD benefits when you leave a certain % of space available inside the drive. say you have a 120GB, you leave 15-20% space left available in the drive, this helps to keep the SSD retain its top speed or be consistent in performance (not sure am i explaining this right :/) if you hog it down to less then 10%, your SSD performance will drop and youll start to notice things arent as zippy anymore
for my case 120GB, i have to leave about 15-20GB free which if you look from this way
>120GB full cap
>111GB after format
>Windows 8.1 is est 20-30GB taken
>then add in drivers, other essential items (up to 5GB)
>i left.. 80GB+
>throw in a game, (games these days are huge) and youre already reaching the 20GB limit

yeah leaving unallocated space helps (i.e. over provisioning). again, this depends on usage. 10% should be good enough for normal use (imo leaving too much space unallocated is a waste)
i have to stress the effects of ssd slowing down is not like immediately. it will slow down with time (but usually many months later). you can minimize this effect by leaving it idle for a few hours to do garbage collection during weekends (i.e. just leave it alone. it will do its job to regain performance). by the time you think your drive is slow to an unacceptable level, just wipe it clean, do a secure erase and start over.
so, use the drive normally, like hdd, and don't worry so much
