Samsung 840 Pro review against its Big Brother in enterprise use SSD; overall it held up very well as it was originally meant for laptops/ PCs originally:

Actually, it performed terribly against them.

If SR wanted to pit it against enterprise SSDs, the least they could have done to give it a fair benchmark is to manually underprovision the drive.

blink.gif sweat.gif That's a lot. 960GB still cheaper than enterprise HDD.

My bad blush.gif , I should have known one of the optimization is marked "warning", re-enabled Hard Disk write cache for the SSD and the speed bumped back to normal, ~38MB/s now and quite speedy.
FYI: I'm using Plextor M5S 128GB
Also I noticed the boot up during my Windows 8.0 is so speedy that I only need to press the power button and adjusted my seat and it's already at the login screen, now I'm practically waiting for it, more than 20 seconds from the power button to just start to boot up Windows, the rest from the spinning circle is less than 3 seconds. doh.gif

you should name your budget

Plextor M5S 128GB RM284
Crucial M500 120GB RM289
Samsung 840 Evo 120GB RM309
Intel 530 120GB RM344 <--- 5 year warranty
Corsair Force LS 120GB RM325

all these are pretty easily found and purchased at standard IT shops. best if you head to Lowyat Plaza for the above mentioned SRP

read speed wise, theyre more or less similar as its the SATA ports thatll throttle their speed more than the SSD

as for write speeds, Intel 530, Corsair Force LS and Samsung 840 Evo is the fastest among the top

but theyre still more or less similar in perf due to limitations of SATA3 port

unless youre really unlucky and got lemon unit, SSD is generally more reliable than HDD

both Intel and Samsung have very good track records in SSD reliability and quality, so no need to worry so much

nice smile.gif far more cost-effective than investing in enterprise ssd's if space and reads are priorities.

try follow the steps done in this website
http://www.thessdreview.com/ssd-guides/opt...dows-8-edition/

he cover most of the important parts really well

the basics would most usually be setting boot as AHCI instead of IDE, and disable auto defrag, and update to latest SSD drivers/firmware

These are used as video caches so yes, they're read-heavy and economical storage is important.

apart from ssd optimizations, you should also enable rapid mode via samsung magician.

on a side note, for those who use primocache (i use it to enhance hdd reads), rapid mode will fail to start in the presence of primocache. (this happens in 0.9.9; not sure about the new 1.0.1. maybe they are all ram-based enhancements, so there are conflicts between them; like softperfect ramdisk issue previously) so to keep the high hdd reads, i disable rapid mode and replace the ram cache part with primocache. (primocache is more configurable, e.g. allow you to define how much ram you can allocate for ram cache, and it covers all drives, including ssd's and hdd's)

it looks ok. rapid mode is a ram-based enhancement for samsung drives that depend on several factors other than the ssd. (e.g. mobo, cpu, ram) you can also turn it off and do a test on ssd-only performance. maybe someone with same drive and capacity can compare theirs with yours.

here is mine (samsung 840 pro with and without rapid mode, connected to sata3; samsung 830 and plextor m5m is connected to sata2, hence the apparent bottleneck)
