What is Gunpla?

Gundam Models refers to plastic and non-plastic model kits depicting the mechas, vehicles and characters of the fictional Mobile Suit Gundam universe. These kits have become popular among anime fans and model-lovers, especially in Japan and in other nearby Asian countries since 1980s. The popularity of Gundam models increased in the 1990s with North America and Europe being exposed to Gundam through television, video and manga. These Gundam Models may also be called Gunpla (ガンプラ Ganpura?), a portmanteau of "Gundam plastic model". "Gunpla" more commonly refers to the practice of building Gundam models, rather than the models themselves.

I did do some modifying though. I don't care about the transformation so his chest mechanics are all superglued solid so he's pretty sturdy now.

haha, the chest transformation is the most fiddly one, though i also have to admit i have never transformed this guy after the initial WR mode photoshoot.. he's been in MS mode ever since, so gluing would be the most logical choice

Hi guys. I'm new to this thread. BTW, I got myself a MG Aile Strike Gundam RM. And I'm gonna start building it soon. However, I need some master to teach me.

I have a simple question, what's the best sandpaper for me to remove nub marks ?

I checked Google already, some says use 400 > 600 > 800 > 1000.

Is the statement above correct?

I LOLed hard when I saw this! Why you get MG Aile Strike RM? doh.gif There is one HG Aile Strike Remastered version, why don't you get that? It was far more better than this, better proportion, better look, better details, better articulation and most important it was cheap!!! Oh God why???? Maybe you are new here so you don't know much... sad.gif

Why you want to sand it? Doing that will hurt your gunpla, it feel pain too, that's cruel... sad.gif
But if you really want, you could try 200->400->1200->3000. Don't hesitate to apply lot of force when doing with 200 and 400 then gently with 1200 and 3000. After that apply topcoat and then sand all over again for total 3 rounds, it will look very smooth and shiny after finish!

as much as it would look amazing to see unicorn throw off all his extra equipment for some melee with his 4 beam sabers, he needs his equipment for the mission, so we won't be seeing some melee action like that sad.gif
but then again with all the weapons, he engaged the Norn with his beam saber, so i hope they make a really good fight scene for the start of ep7 thumbup.gif

Haha SEED fans here... but not feeling offended. tongue.gif Although it was not really good, but I've watched it for so many times. It was just because I like Athrun Zala when I was young, and I enjoy the moment when Kira and Shin get beaten badly especially the emo crybaby. Hahaha...

as what Khai62 stated
that and also such thing is not that mainstream enough to warrant a MG treatment IMO
If anything, I think Zudah would be a better ones
since Zudah can also be the basis for GM Camouf

story revolving gold frame has very little to do with the seed tv series. It take place in the background story b4 seed and 1st half of destiny so it really doesn't matter which seed anime is running, it hold no bearing to its existence. While true it is indeed popular, it is no more popular then the likes of legend and providence which is animated (and cannon as far as Bandai is concern) and is relevant to the anime series. If u r taking the anime a part of ur justification then both the main antagonist should hav 1st dip b4 amatsu is even in consideration.

Not trying to promote here but I would say they are quite friendly, and will help you find the things you want, clear your modeling doubts and so on... Selling gunpla just their part time I guess, so that they will help other modelers. I've saw some of their works, they are quite skillful modelers so they could recommend the correct tools for your need.

Maybe their price not really cheap compare to some LYN sellers but still within acceptable price range. If they do stock clearance, you will get cheap limited kit, just like LT warehouse sales. And IINM they are official bandai gunpla distributor, I think I saw it last time on gundam.info but forgot which event, maybe the lucky draw. So they are trust able and recommended seller and obviously a good choice for those live in Johor, last time they also do COD at Ipoh, now not sure. thumbup.gif

well from my experience, online-wise, since i'm not at JB so i have only attempted to contact them via FB, they sound like they're not very interested in doing business.. their replies are half-hearted and i don't see the friendliness you mentioned

granted that was my one and only experience contacting them, have never bought anything from them though

Maybe you get wrong timing which they are busy. As I said, they do part time only so they are not really into business but now they have open a shop so that they should be more serious now. And I could guarantee that they are replying fast in their FB group, maybe you should join their FB group instead of asking on their FB page. They have 2 admin, one you seldom see him which is the main boss I guess and he is the one will reply on FB page, whereas another partner is quite active on FB group. And originally they do online business only. If you want buy model kit, I would recommend LYN sellers but if you want modelling tools or paints you can find them because they have more choices than here.

but i think so far the line art looks great, i hope we get something of tallgeese's standard, if not better (nu ver ka standard?) okay maybe that's too much tongue.gif i'll settle for just better proportions and newer wing series standard for details

i dun c ppl hate on hi-nu redesign (well there is some but not as vitriol) so why do ppl hate epyon redesign and by association hate on this zero redesign?

epyon is 1 of the best kit of 2011, extremely underrated. i dun understand why the hate.

Some people are just very purist when it comes to things they love. Epyon EW isn't Epyon TV therefore he is bad. I've seen the same reaction to Nu ver ka. I would like to see a 100% accurate MG of TV Wing Zero, but this ver. ka redesign still looks extremely promising.

Let say I got a MG RX-79-2 1/100

I need a marker to cover those sprue mark. I notice there is Gundam marker set, gundam 00 marker set, gundam Ace marker set and gundam seed marker set, I mainly aim for the yellow, blue and red, are there any difference between those sets???

the differences are the colors (pretty obvious sweat.gif) other than that, it's just the name.. i believe the tones are more or less the same, just pick a set with the colors you want/need

i see, can't help much though, i've only ever purchased LBX markers, their colours are more vibrant than gundam markers, but of course, at a higher price

i've got the gundam marker set though, it should work well with your RX-78-2, since the names are related to the time lines, and should fit the series well enough

Use grey on light colors. Black on darker colors where the grey would barely show.

It's better to get the walls. It'll give you a more solid looking line and it'll look cleaner.

woooo, paneling line, sometime good looking in thin, but sometime good looking in thick.

if the model got many lines (like macross), suggest use tiny line for better looking.

woah that's one huge valley of a panel line.. sweat.gif
well like it or not the tip of the marker will surely get to the wall, so it's better to "paint" the walls as well, else it look uneven.

I'm a newbie, im kinda confuse with the marker

Let say I got a MG RX-79-2 1/100

I need a marker to cover those sprue mark. I notice there is Gundam marker set, gundam 00 marker set, gundam Ace marker set and gundam seed marker set, I mainly aim for the yellow, blue and red, are there any difference between those sets???
*
As I know Gundam Real Touch markers could help you. I'm not able to answer further question regarding marker pens, please google it.

There is no right or wrong as HxiiiK said. Gunpla just a hobby, everyone have their own preference, some like to do panel line, some don't even care. Thick or thin, grey or black or other colours also your preference.
And nothing is forbidden just only have proper way or steps to achieve what you want or proper methods and directions to use a tools, materials and so on... I can only say just do whatever you want, you like, it is just a hobby after all, build it with your creativity and make it become a piece of art and of course enjoy it. Well just me 2 cents worth of advice. smile.gif

GP01 is a REALLY old Master Grade, and I wouldn't hold my breath for a 2.0 GP01, especially since the RG kits are coming out.

do the real touch marker can hide the nub marks? cause i just bought grey gundam marker tu do that and the result is, the colur doesnt match (i want to hide the marks on the grey parts mainly inner frame, weapons etc)
*
As I mentioned before, I couldn't answer much because I don't use marker to cover nub marks.
But I know every markers can hide nub mark as long as you pick the correct color. Maybe you can't get the best result but as long as it close to the original then it done the job.
If you expect to cover up all, paint your kit is the best solution. Or master cutting and sanding skill so you won't leave nub marks there. smile.gif
I'm able to clean my kit without leaving any nub marks as long as it didn't become white when I cut them from gates. Take your time and practice your sanding skil. Bear in mind that Rome wasn't built in one day. If you want good result, don't rush to complete it. I never complete a kit in one day time, simple SD also took me 2 days and my efforts are not wasted.
Good luck in mastering proper sanding skill. wink.gif

i think its jz make it not so obvious only like sometimes we overcut and left obvious white mark on the plastic
if observe in detailed still will find it different coz the base color and the marker color hard to make it 100% same
jz my opinion it may be wrong blush.gif

haha, nub marks on titanium finish....I had nightmare for few days the first time I did a titanium kits tongue.gif

My best effort is to get a marker color that look similiar to the surface and try to cover it. And try to make the nub marks as small as possible. blush.gif

I guess it is quite challenging to deal with nub mark in titanium, any pros can enlighten us ? rclxms.gif

my advice, stay clear of titanium kits tongue.gif better if you grab some paint, and candy coat/metallic paint the kit, looks better, plus before painting you'll have sanded off all the nub marks, so your kit will be clean AND shiny brows.gif

YES !! , I learn that in the hard way, after go into Painting with the option to pick what kind of titanium style you like, i never look back.
Although time spend on a single kits is longer, but the end result is far more stratifying rclxms.gif rclxms.gif

LOL remind me of my nightmare. When the time I just step into gunpla world, I bought Akatsuki from GA. And shop assistant recommend me to cover with Tamiya Gold Leaf X-12, of course I'm not satisfy with it.

If you ask me how to cover up those plated surface, I honestly tell you that I have no idea beside repaint whole kit. But I just slowly trim off the nubs with sharp hobby knife, didn't do any sanding on plated kit because it will make it become more ugly... Maybe cover the marks with paint that close to the original color.
So far I only have 1 Akatsuki and 1 MG Exia Ignition Mode, I've repaint whole Akatsuki and didn't use any Chrome plated part of Exia because I changed it into Repair mode.

there are.. some of bandai's exclusive kits (at least i think it was bandai) that are extra finish have the parts molded undergate, meaning the part, after cutting out, the nub marks are at the seam lines where u join the 2 parts, so they are covered up when u put 2 parts together.. undergate is better, but of course, more expensive since u mold that little bit more plastic to hold the part up

Great they make this but as you said it was expensive and should be Bandai's exclusive kit. So it was quite hard for me to obtain such a kit, maybe future I will get one extra finishing kit with under gate technology and see how good it is. smile.gif

Lately, alot of good gunpla shops that have good price and good stock seem to be closing down, or really have reduced stock in KL/selangor area. Used to shop at Toyz and Hobbies at Cineleisure but now gone.

Anyone know of still existing good places to buy gunpla? In terms of latest releases and still competitive prices? (RM 80 for a HG in Toys'r'Us is ridiculous!!!) I prefer to shop in store rather than online.

Does PG ever on warehouse sale?
I'm looking at older 1 such as ashtray red or mk2.

Is Bandai stopping their PG?

not sure about warehouse sale but you can try to look at GA in TS. Seen a lot of PG there

I don't think Bandai is stopping their PG sales. Due to the price not many shops dare to bring it in, that's why got limited stock hmm.gif

there was a LT division here in Penang. organized a model kit competition in Gurney Plaza with lots of kits & gashapons.
but that was ~3years+ ago..
they claim their shop was somewhere near New World Park but i couldn't find it. never heard/seen of any events from them since. sweat.gif

as for the PG, it must be the lukewarm response to the 2010's Strike Freedom PG that made bandai consider long & hard of the next one.. tongue.gif

edit: oh u mean the PG.. i tot it that meant Penang.. blush.gif

so u've actually able to make nub marks on titanium kits become less obvious? how did u do it? brows.gif
*
Well, the result actually is still not good, but what I do is try to use art knife to slowly cut the part and make the nub smallest possible, and then try to find the marker color that is closest to the part and apply on it. I use marker and mix a little thinner and attempt to make the colour match. blush.gif

It is still noticeable if look closer and carefully. I have moved toward to painting and now working to make all my future kits metalic tongue.gif

I've said it b4 and i'll say it again.

PG is not Bandai's main line, in the past there is a void when it comes to PG release it takes several years b4 a new 1 came out. So why r u surprise at the lack of any PG news? Its not like we haven experience this b4.

Unlike MG and HG both rakes in major $$$ hence Bandai release new kit once or twice every month. The smaller kits is easier to design, cheaper to produce, cheaper to maintain their molds, faster turnaround time, and more appealing to consumers by virtue of its size and price tag. As such tey can withstand a bomb or two, tey can take risk and come out with outrageous stuff like Fuuinsaiki, u think Bandai can re-cope the cost of developing PG Fuuinsaiki? Ask urself this, do u buy more MG/HG then PG? Which do u think sells more volume? Put urself in Bandai shoe and the choices in priority is obvious.

Dun put so high hope on PG, ur setting up urself for disappointment. When 1 is release rejoice, when there is none move on to something else. Frankly im quite fed up with all these "when is new PG coming out", "where the hell is the new PG", "why aren't there any new PG", "is PG cancel", etc etc. It'll come out when it come out.

/end rant

Agreed. Honestly, PG kits are barely even worth it anymore. 00 Raiser can barely stand and you have to buy a PG action base separately. Strike Freedom can't even support the weight of its own wings and has puke gold making up most of its inner frame. PG Zeta is completely outclassed by the 2.0 MG, as are the PG Gundam, Zaku II, and Wing Zero. All that really leaves is the Mk. II, GP01, and Strike as still being worthwhile purchases in my opinion.

strike is going to be the next one down as it's being outclassed by its newest MG already

save for the hands, of course.. but if u were to somehow get the new hands from the Nu ver ka, strike RM would be good to go

point taken, but the MG is pretty good IMO, the new GAT frame gets no complaints from me.. have buster, duel and blitz and loved the build.. not sure how Aegis would work though, but if the strike gets this new frame, plus all that details i've seen, looks pretty good to me.. granted the RG will always have a special place in my heart brows.gif also because it was my first RG too

the new hand isn't really up to par yet. Its an improvement on 2.0 and swap-able hand thats for sure but the wrist joint is a big downside (pun intended).

i think there will be a new ver or at least in development of new hands, the runner says mp1 so i assume there is mp2 or mp3 or more, why put a "1" if there isn't more version of it eh? Surely there will be a rounded 1 made for zeon or smaller size for regular size MG. It look out of place putting such big hand on regular size kit.

the one good point the MG Strike RM has over PG Strike is the Aile Pack wingspan
the PG Aile Pack wingspan is shorter, even comparing to the old MG Aile Strike sweat.gif

i believer so, since Nu is one of the taller suits (made taller by katoki himself doh.gif) the technology for the hands should be easier to implement.. not much hope for the smaller suits for now, the RG hands feel rather fragile at times, so maybe middle ground may be possible, looking forward to more though, and knowing bandai, some builders HD parts sold separately, that will sell like hotcakes

and ouch, that pun made me cringe, anyone who's experienced building nu ver ka/jesta would know

and also found, the evolution of phantom gundam
katoki makes everything better rclxms.gif (i know some would argue)

You are very welcome.
Better verify with them just in case. I didn't saw many left on the racks though for that particular item.

seems like Impulse is totally neglected since SEED-D remaster.. no new Impulse kit made even when there's chance to materialize the Blaster pack.
the priority went to Destiny & now SF. RG Blast Impulse & Saviour? very unlikely..

GP01 is the original Zephyranthes prototype for EFSF.

GP01FB or "Full Burnean" is the variation of GP01 optimized for space after it was wrecked.

inner frame could be more solid... well it wasn't a disaster.. just not one of the more solid RGs, if that's what you're looking for
being fully transformable doesn't help it's solidness as well, granted it is a very nicely engineered kit

It's well engineered if you superglue the transformation joints. tongue.gif

Joking aside, RG Zeta is the definition of a kit that you want to buy two of if you intend to show off the Waverider mode and the mobile suit, cause constant transformations would probably destroy what little stability it has.

Another idea is using gundam mechanical base as wall and use it to 'display' those parts, like spare part or storage/armory....

ziplock bag would be ideal.
easy storage and with the zip supposedly anything stashed inside won't magically disappears.

Planning to put it in my Ikea detolf cabinet, since the lowest shelf is not utilized anyway.... Too low to use as display.

even though MSRP is the same, but price listed on amazon is different for the two RG GP01 kits.
which is logical, considering the GP01-Fb has more plastic

On its own without shipping, it cost RM 104-ish which i think is reasonable for like a 560 page book. There also a "Popular ver" of this which only have the color pages (As oppose the complete one that include lineart) 236 page which around RM 60.

Hi for those who use ikea detolf for display, how do you utilize the space ?
Perfect grade just fit nice
Master grade utilize half of the height per shelf
Real grade/high grade is the worse as its only utilize 1/3 of the shelf space

A MG Nightingale would not be profitable for Bandai AT ALL. The only people who would buy it are Char super-fanboys, and even then it would be a poor idea cause the price of a Nightingale would match if not surpass PG prices.

Did an unofficial company manufacture a conversion kit for the nightingale?
Btw, I'm no Aznable fan but that kit looks sick.

Heck, I've never even watched a single gundam episode before.

There is a third party 1/100 Nightingale kit, but it's complete utter garbage. Here's a video review if you're inclined to watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pz7v9LXK3_k

the only affordable nightingale is the model kit by RC and i will warn you first, DO.NOT.BUY.IT

i think there are conversion or resin kits but those are MUCH more expensive

Will be expecting a lot of new re-master HG as this show will be all about building gundam and fight them like LBX.
To me its good to be away from all the War type gundam and hopefully the new re-master HG is good.
But i do love that they have new custom weapons that can attached to the new HG gundam. Wonder if can kit bash like LBX?
This is also similar with the PS3 gunpla wars or something game.

mr hobby leveling thinner also damage, this is depand on how the mixture ratio u apply.
So, when u failed to paint the color, it was really hard for u to remove the paint without the thinner...except u sand it.

Err......I'm using normal thinner. I want to rub the panel lining actually. But now I change to nail remover and rub it. Nail remover didn't damage it.

Nail remover still can damage the thin part of the plastic, if:

u leave the liquid in the surface too long, or u putting too much liquid on it.

For paneling line, u can try to use eraser.

the little join that connect dragoon to backpack. BTW I did reinforce it, not sure if really helps but so far never give me any problem. (for 2 years already, and weekly changing post)

Take this as reference: Clicky

Notice that this guy just add a ring on it. For me I first fill it with A+B putty, which became VERY hard once it's dry. Then put on the ring. (I bought a brass tube and saw it down accordingly)

Not sure if it called seam line. It's the gap between two ' parts'. When new, it's snap fit perfectly, but now a gap appear due to the plastic flex/bend. I'm more inclined off using glue.

Build Strike Gundam
A Gunpla created by Sei Iori, based on Mobile Suit Gundam SEED's Strike Gundam.
Focusing on mobility, it specializes in quick, hit-and-run attacks. While it's put together extremely well, its weapons loadout is still incomplete, meaning there's plenty of room to grow.

Hi for those who use ikea detolf for display, how do you utilize the space ?
Perfect grade just fit nice
Master grade utilize half of the height per shelf
Real grade/high grade is the worse as its only utilize 1/3 of the shelf space
*
You can try lifting you gundam up with an action base, since I seldom extent the AB to the highest anyway. You can fit more Gundams in if you lift some up and display some underneath. smile.gif

bandai is getting better with the box arts.. now the only way they can make it better if they make a sliding sheet with the cover art inside a pvc sheet with all the MG and name outside, so u can actually slide out the box art to use as a clean poster without all the wordings and all that

a lot of method to remedy this. for me, glue works best. i tend to use UHU instead of super glue. put a few small drops on the male part of the joint and spread it evenly, leave it to dry then assemble. UHU dries soft and rubbery, unlike super glue that dries hard and flaky. plus, super glue causes those fogging thing on plastic. shakehead.gif

works for making most joints stiffer.

The reason I prefer this compared to the 'cement' because it is easier and doesn't involved dissembling process (old model, scare it will breaks) and also sanding (too lazy laugh.gif )...put a bit press together for a while and it 'should' fit nicely.

Question to all,

Anyone with experience buying Gundam kits in HongKong?
Am going there soon, but the only shop I found was an online shop.

gkgundam, price pretty reasonable but they don't have a physical shop just an office in kowloon.

Any actual shops in HK? Not those tacky/dodgy shops in tsim tsa tsui.

Hi,

Mong kok do have some shops but price are ok. There is another street called toy street the price there is cheaper than mong kok.

http://www.discoverhongkong.com/us/shop/wh...yuen-street.jsp

This street has lots of toys shop along the street you can hunt for the right price but cannot guarantee they have lots of choices and also
not sure all shops accept credit card.

For toy shops in mongkok, go to these street.

Dundas Street - Waile Model Centre.
This is the shop where I buy the most, even the latest RG Destiny I bought discount and I bought it for around RM60 after conversion.

Take note that some of these shops close as early as 8pm

I walk around and found out the cheapest by far is the shop i recommended up there. But there's some other shops that sell accessories.

it came from harmony of gundam and there is no story behind it, its just a collection of variation design solely for games/model kit. MLRS is just one of em.

Hahaha why the hell I want to use the katana when I have a better weapon?
And when want to use pistol, have to throw the katana away? Or is it a mounting for both pistol and katana? Can't see clearly. sweat.gif

Guys

Any idea how different the color of gms105 vs gms120 marker?

Im planning to get marker for age gundam so i thought gms120 will be the better choice. But if i would like to get new gundams in future, does it mean i have to buy different markers again?

Guys, I seriously need help and adv here. After I built my MG Assault Shroud, I struggle to put the front skirt on. The back skirt is ok, just the front one. I check on rrobert tutorial on Youtube but he also face the same prob. Last option will be to glue it but before that any other way that I can fix it?

Thx in advance.... icon_rolleyes.gif

earlier i also thought need to glue, but the proper way is to dismantle the legs, and upper body, adjust the front skirts properly before putting it on... it's loose because the front skirts are moving around while you are trying to put it on, and in the end it's not put on properly

so best way is to take off the upper body and legs so you can see and put it on properly.. that part is the most troublesome to put on, but once u get it on properly, it won't fall off at all

the bazooka? that one i just leave in box sweat.gif not too fond of his bazooka.. and yes, it must be slung over the shoulder.. u can see the part that sort of fits on top of the shoulder at the back of the bazooka

if u mean the shiva railgun that the instruction manual ask u to put on the shoulder, then there's a flip out part that u can use to let him hold it also

the pose from ngcheechong is easy, just remove the green cap on the handle, slide the handle into the grip and peg into the peg on the hand and put it back on

but if u want to do that combined cannon pose, that one is trickier whistling.gif

I got both VF25 and VF27 kit, applying water slide decal a total nightmare especially for the VF27. As a result, my next valkyrie most probably a DX.

Between the VF25 tornado and VF27, VF27 is way better in mechanism but really hard to apply the decal due to its un-flat shape.
