Jungle (Mount) Tracking check list.
Everytime I go for jungle trekking, I am sick off writing and recalling the check-list.
Therefore for my convinence, I write this checklist for onces and refer to it anytime when I go
for treking. I don't think many people will read this anyway, so not much effort is put in improving the presentation of this article.

Jungle Tracking will normally depends on how long is the jungle trail and how long U will be staying in the jungle. (how many days) etc.
That determines what you going to bring.

1) Own Medication :- Standby pils for Nausea (motilium) , Soar-Throat (lozenges) , Diaheria (imodium or oral dehyration pil), Cough (cough mixtures), Flu, Fever, Medicated Oil, Aqueas Cream, anti-fungal Cream , Vit C pills, pain-killer.

2) Food :-
Lasting food :- Rice, Ikan Bilis , Biscuit, Maggi Mee, Snack, Chocolate Bar, Nestum,
Heavy food:- Sardin, RedBeans, other canned food, oil, cracker, sugar, salt.
Fragile food :- Eggs, Bread, Vegetables.

3)Cooking tools :-
a)  Bursen burner with 1-2 extra tin of gas.
b) Fork, spoon, cup, canner opener, knife, plate, mass-tin
c) Kuali, pengalas, plastic bag, old newspaper.
d) Rafri string, rope.

4) Clothing (quantities and type from head to toe)
a) comb,
b) face mask (topeng) for temperature below 10 C.
c) spectacles, sun-glasses, cap
d) lip-stick, sun-block
e) gloves
f) long shelves shirt, short selves short (preferably with many pockets)
g) under-wear, swimming trunk, shorts, middle pants and long pants.
h) socks, good shoes, sleeping bag, selipars.
i) small bags, tent
j) bag capacity :- 1 day trip :- 10 liter bag, 3 - 5 days :- 40 liter, above 7 days :- 60 liter.

5) Local currency, Malaysia Currency and some US$ dollars, credit cards

6) Toilety :- Soap, soap powder, tooth brush, paste, facial cleaners

Interesting Facts.

1) Nobody can take care of U better than yourself. So throughout the period don't get sick or injury. Don't overstress yourself. One can only walk for so many hours, so many kms in one day. The maths does work this way, keep at reasonable pace for yourself. You are there partly to enjoy the environment. U R not there to break record.

2) be careful not to get injure. Twist your leg, broke your bone, etc. or camps. etc. It will slow U down dramatically and slow down the whole team as well.

3) Eating strategies.
a) Heavy break fast and dinner. Lunch is pre-packed. cooking for lunch is just a waste of time.
b) Eat or cook non-lasting food first. (It must be finished within 2-3 days)
c) Eat heavy food first (canned food), so that it will reduce your bag weight.
d) Burried some of your food along the return path to reduce the bag weight. (Please bear in mind it may get stolen, canned food only other food may get
eaten by rats
e) eat simple food.

4) Water
a) Once you reached a certain height (1500 meters and above) in Peninsular Malaysia forest. Water is very scare. Plan well on how much water
you need to carry. Not too little or too much. Sometimes, you need to reach a certain point or camp site to repenish your water.
b) For convinience purposes, you may end up drink river water, please bear in mind that sometimes the water is dirty even though it looks cystal clear. U may most likely end-up with diaheria. The water may be poluted by others treker (popular treking places) or nearby orang asli settlement.
c) Don't urine or faces on the river stream. Try to wash all your things further from the camp site.

5) Jungle trekking in Malaysia is mainly consist of walking through a pre-established trek. Many of the treks starts from a river, some of the trek located just  30 - 60 meters behind the river, some of the treks is on the river side (walking on this trek is very difficult and slipery). In one of my experience in Gunung Korbu, some of the trek cross through small river a few times but once we reached the river crossed point, we are almost lost everything. It very easy to get lost during river crossing point. In higher attitude (1500m and above), the trek route is very difficult especially when you are carrying a bag, Your bag may get stucked as you may need to walk through a tree branch or root at a height of 0.5 meter etc. It is not productive to walk during night when you cannot see the trail properly, your walking speed will be reduced by 50% during night walk. It also easier to get lost during night. Make it a point to reach the camp site before dark. Don't try to be over-ambitious and try to shoot through a few camp site and end-up walking in the dark.

6) Animal sighting.
In most of the jungle trekking, animal sighting is extremely rarely because animal tends to sheer away from people (jungle trail). For mammals, most of them will come out during late evening nearby some river (during the time when the river is a bit dry) or during nite time. If you are lucky you may get the chances to spot some animal foot print or stool. Some salt-sites may attract animals there.

i'm impressed and amazed with all the mountains u have conquered. u must be one of the hardcore climbers. i've completed my transtitiwangsa and hoping to complete G7 too. but from the stories i heard from other climbers, CUS (chamah-ulu sepat) is tough. hope we can do our CUS together..

well, i kindda like the challenge. transtitiwangsa is tough too. and yes, it makes me lost some weight, though i'm skinny. lol..

any idea when is a good time to climb Gunung KInabalu ?

don't worry about food or drinks there. they got a restaurant at gunting lagadan (or was it the other camp?). make sure you got enough money though! i was charged RM4.00 for a cup of hot milo

no la..not gunting lagadan, lol..the restaurant is at laban rata..the food is very expensive..once, i paid rm6 for a drink..ahaha

Try Jelawang, it is somewhere at Kelantan. Been there twice during secondary school period and once while doing my undergraduates...

The hiking will only takes up to average 4 hours to reach the camp side. Another 2 hours to the top of the hill.

One of the best reserve mountain in Kelantan...

BTW, why choose now? Raining season is coming soon. Usually we don't go mountain climbing near or in raining season...

January till end of August is the best time to go for camping...

Ok, very simple. just around 10-15 minutes (by car) from TARC setapak. Nearby the kesas highway, haha.

it's near zoo negara. if you don;t know where zoo negara is, then i'd say bukit tabur is like 5 mins drive from wangsa maju.

bukit tabur is a challenging climb. went up twice, looking foward for the next trip. as you reach the top, you can see lush green scenery of the forest. the dam and the river. turn 180 degree, you see the kuala lumpur and the twin tower.

the hill is pretty rocky and dangerous. there's been a few fatalities before and one has to be careful.

as i write, i'm looking at bukit tabur out of my window. if the group going up bukit tabur is small, then i'll come along to boost the numbers.

i got no problem on 15th sept, but i do prefer on Sunday morning leh..

yaya, sunday or saturday morning is better....
