I'm going to Hk & Taiwan next month. I'd like to know how you guys normally practiced on currency exchanging.

Do you guys:

1) Exchange a reasonable amount of HKD & NT and bring some USD just in case?
or
2) Exchange all to USD and change your money in the foreign country?
or
3) Bring less cash and use credit card most of the time for shopping?

4)What's the conversion rate for using credit card in foreign country?

5)Any good money changer in KL to recommend?

or

a) Yes a reasonable amount of HKD + NT cause RM is not a popular currency there. if you have USD bring abit enough....

2) Exchange all to USD and change your money in the foreign country?
or
As above

3) Bring less cash and use credit card most of the time for shopping?

Not advisable because bit messy when you come back and check your credit card bill

4)What's the conversion rate for using credit card in foreign country?

The rate is as per our local issuing bank.

5)Any good money changer in KL to recommend?

Cheras :
Jaya Jusco Maluri - Best Rate
Leisure Mall - Near to Kenny Rogers

of you can even change @ KLIA

Ringgit is still not tradable overseas, thanks to our ex-PM and his brilliant economic team. Surprisingly I found that in Dubai they do exchange MYR, of course you can use it in Southern Thai as well.

I always changed at KLIA, no point going around and shop for money changer, sometimes they dont have small notes, or not enought notes etc.

Always bring spare USD or Euro.

Credit cards is ok, you can earn some points biggrin.gif
but check with local issuing bank for the rate

yes.. it's a lot high, when u change thousands.. and no discount too..

go to "best rate" to change.. it's the best money changer.. ask for discount when u change a lot..

if u change MYR to USD , then USD to HKD.. then u have gone through 2 money changer, then u lose your money interest even more.. change your HKD here in malaysia, then should be enough.. dun have to bring USD.. if emergency, use credit card..

With all the exports and trade surplus Malaysia is having, one would think we should be getting a better deal.

Also, with the relief of the mafia pegged rate against USD, the ringgit should
rise a bit higher against the USD or Euro., maybe around 3.6 to 3.7

It would be nicer if MYR goes back to the pre-'97 days, when it was like
1USD = MYR2.8 or MYR 2.9 biggrin.gif

IMO and experience,

Just change a reasonable amount of currency of that particular country you are going to, and bring along one credit card. Bring too much cash with u is not recommended.

You'll have to manage urself when to use the cash and when to sign card. biggrin.gif

i went to london on Mac 11th
what i observed from there is, the currency exchange there for Singapore Dollar to Pound was : S$2+ for 1 pound

in malaysia, RM2 for S$1
and Rm6+ for 1 pound

so, change sing dollar here before going to UK is a lot better than changing Pounds from here to UK

That is not that wise. There is a commission charge for every exchange. Furthermore, it is RM2.20+=SGD1. In the end, you get roughly the same qoute and you may lose out because of the commission.

Yes, Shenzen takes HKD, but I suggest you trade ruminbi (CHN) currency....unless for emergency.

HK hardly accepts CHN currency.....2002/2003 travelling experience.

Anyone ever withdraw money from oversea ATM with maybank ATM card? Is there any transaction fees incurred?

I've been withdrawing from oversea ATM and checking my transaction history via maybank2u and it seems like there's no such thing as transaction fee, even though I've been told that it's roughly RM12 per transaction.

I've checked maybank2u faq and it seems like there is no "Oversea banking Transaction fee" mentioned either.

And another thing is, the Exchange rate used is amazingly cheap. I pay RM0.000443 for each rupiah when I exchange it in Airport but the rate i get via withdrawing is just RM0.0004 (which is much cheaper). In other words, even though RM12 transaction fee is incurred it is still cheaper if I withdraw 1 million rupiah.

It sounds like a good news but I just want to make sure about it.

Not sure whats best practice. But I feel changing MYR to HKD directly is the best choice. Reason being if you change all to USD, you suffer the exchange rates twice (MYR --> USD --> HKD) That's just my assumption though...

I would however guarantee that option 3 is the most costly one (though safest in terms with least cash on hand of course)...

That is because when you charge your Malaysian-based credit card, you are subjected to VISA/Mastercard's foreign exchange rate (not the issuing bank's) in which the rates I believe is not disclosed to the public. Taking the rates into account, whenever you charge your cc,- they will convert from HKD --> USD --> MYR, which is their standard practice that applies everywhere in the world; They will convert to USD first. I can quite confirm this statement... wink.gif

I will always go to mid valley to buy foreign currency.. there are 2 shops in the same row.. always compete among each other.. near the kfc and san francisco coffee escalator..

my advice:

1. buy the money that the country you will visit
2. have some USD for backup
3. have credit card ready since you never know how much you will spend there, if you exchange money overthere most probably u will never get the best rate. use the USD if you really need to..

well, i do not know about HK.. but for Phillippine..
is better you convert RM to USD then USD to Peso at Philippine..
you get more value than converting directly..
Actually i was given this advise from a banker at Penang Airport.
As what he said, Currency like USD, Euro, Pound and yen have better value as these are the commonly traded currency compare to the others.

No problem changing ringgit in Bangkok mall banks, better rate than in KLIA-LCCT. BUT .... LCCT bank did not have any -- ran out!

Japan, can VISA withdraw from any Post Office ATM. However, hefty charge added.

For best exchange rates go to the money changer in KL Sentral next to Nile Bookstore. Lowest in town believe me!! About 2 weeks ago, changed USD for RM3.695 whereas other places only offer RM3.72. Also same time when GBP was at RM7.02, this guy offerign at RM6.99.

Note - for travelling in Japan:

Credit cards are really convenient for getting cash in Japan, esp since dealing with banks is really a pain even if you speak Japanese! Not all shopping area bank machines accept cards, but all post offices have English capable ATMs. This service used to be free, but now there is a hefty charge (on top of the behind-the-scenes rates from the banks and card issuers) , so use sparingly.

How can we get the main supplier of these money changers maybe? We can get good rate by dealing with this first supplier instead of other downline money changers..Please advise. thank u.

My past experience in HK:

1) Exchange a reasonable amount of HKD & NT and bring some USD just in case?
get some HK$ for emergencies and bring USD. the current exchange rate RM->USD is rather favorable.
3 days ago, i got 3600baht for USD100 in phuket while my friend get less than 10baht for RM1 in KL.
HK dun accept RM, even if they take, the rate is doh.gif

2) Exchange all to USD and change your money in the foreign country?
not a bad idea but bring large note. go to the indian money-changer in HK. not only they giv better rates than the chinese money-changer, u'll also get better rate for large note. check the USD note u get in malaysia, try to get the newest notes possible. some money-changer dun accept note printed in the 80's

3) Bring less cash and use credit card most of the time for shopping?
i always use c/card at reputable merchant. rates usually more favorable than money-changer... with a bit of luck

4)What's the conversion rate for using credit card in foreign country?
u only know when u get ur statement. it'll be the current rate of c/card transaction

5)Any good money changer in KL to recommend?
sorry dunno

For me it doesn't really worth the effort to search for the best ex-rate around town. How much do u exchange for your 1-2 week oversea trip?? 1k, 3k, 5k?? Even for 5k, and a ex-rate difference of say 1USD=RM3.55 and 1USD=RM3.50 the difference is only RM20 bucks. What's the big deal?? doh.gif Unless u r exchanging for 100k, then that may save u a few hundreds bucks.

Just go to any mamak money exchange inside the shopping complex and change ler and avoid banks and airport. wink.gif

i'm planning to go to Thailand and Singapore soon. but due to our currency exchange rate for USD is getting stronger and stronger.
So should i buy in USD then go to Thailand or Singapore to change back their country note??although i knew tat if u change the note from another country to another country,u will get lesser.
But seem these 2 country not welcome RM. and the rate for RM to Thai Bath and Sin Dollar is about the same.
which way do u think is more profitable??
1.Get USD
or
2.Direct Change that Country note

Currently the Exchange Rate:(from Maybank)
1 USD = 3.5280 (last time is 3.8 right?)
100 bath = 11.6200 (unchanged)
1 Sing Dollar = 2.2935 (unchanged)

I'm not sure, but i guess, u might loose what u gained to the money changer, because u changed twice.

For bath, i think now they accepting RM also, i'm not sure whether all MC accept or not lar, but my father managed to change it at a better rate than here in haadyai. For bangkok, i also saw the money changer showing the exchange rate for RM near one of the famous buddha in Chinatown in bangkok, rate is better too....

you can either change ur $$ here (at the bank or the local money changer) or at China.

Somehow, my gf whose in tourism line advises to convert the $$ here or before u makes the trip.

*
i was in surabaya for last 2 year and going to ATM for check balance using BSN card ( VISA electron). they deduct about RM2.++ for this service and deduct RM12 for each withdraw. ar u really sure there is no surcharge for using maybank card in oversea?

2 places where I always go to for my currency needs:

1- Sungei Wang Plaza, theres a money changer close to Famous Amos I think, and they gave good rate (buying, not selling).

2- Mid Valley, theres a couple of money changer on the LG floor i think, one of em close to the elevator. You can compare both rates and choose the best one.

To those who want to change RM to SGD...
If you've been to JB, you'll notice that the rates of RM to SGD is fixed around JB (Discountable though if you have large amounts)..
in Sing, the rates however are not fixed. Most of the time however, the rates in SG is better than the rates in RM especially if you go to City hall (commercial district)..
For example, if rate is 221.00 in JB (currently) and you're changing a few K, you'll probably get 222.00
but if you change in city hall most likely you can get about 222.70

DO NOT go to the money exchange counter at 1 Utama (the one near the Maybank ATM machine). I went to Pakistan and changed my Rupees at Sg. Wang (the best one is near the middle shops, not big ones or the one near the extrance, can't remember the name though). anyway, the exchange rate was ok (RM1=Rp0.5). When I came back with some Rp left I changed at 1 Utama. Since most of the shops do not have Pakistani Rupees rate displayed, and I was in a hurry. After I arrived home I found out they only gave me RM1=Rp0.32. I was furious and went back and gave them a thorough lesson on integrity and honestly, with many customers watching. They just acted stupid until I asked for their business card and said I would file an official complain. They suddenly retreated and gave me back RM19 !! FYI my exchange loss due to their dishonesty was more than RM200.

It would be better if you change it in Spore as they provide higher exchange rate compare to KL, majority people change their RM to SGD at woodlands cause of higher overturns and competitive market.

If you have malaysian friends working in singapore then i will suggest you to exchange with them cause end of the day they will still come to JB and change their SGD to RM. So it's a win win situation icon_idea.gif

Suggest you check out the Mid-Valley Money changer at LG.

Should be about RM10.20 to RM10.50 for Bath 100/-. If you are the the Thai Border like Chunglung/Hatyai then it would be better there.

In Bangkok the rates is pretty lousy. Better rates if you change form US to Bath.

hey guys!!! i need your advice!

I will be leaving for UK on the 26th of september, and i need around 500 sterling pounds.

I have monitored the exchange rate for the past few weeks and the pounds exchange rate is really levelling, day by day...

i am willing to buy the pounds if the rate is somewhere below 7.05 but looking at the situation now, i doubt whether i can get such price.

Any speculation for the pound rate, of whether it will continue to rise or drop?? or any advice regarding what is the best rate for me to start buying, looking at the fact that i do not hv sufficient time to continue speculating the rate.

thanks!

bank rates will kill you. money changers are always better. can nego if you change a sufficient amount.

@xtracooljustin - You have to notify your bank. You also need cirrus activated machines in order for you to withdraw. Bank rates apply during the conversion process and also a norminal fee for surcharge will appear.

If you withdraw using yur VISA or MASTER credit cards, a nominal fee would appear in your monthly statement, conversion rates also done on banking rates at current point of time of withdrawal. The only thing bad about using your VISA to withdraw is the fact u have to remember another set of pin numbers which most of us dont.

im going to be in europe for a month, staying at friends and family and going about by bus and train.

how much euros and pounds would be recommended for me to bring along if i spend 1 week in germany, 3 weeks in england/scotland?

where is a good place to get good rates?

also, i use HSBC, would it be better to just withdraw my cash from HSBC Atms in europe instead of bringing one lump sum?

thanks loads.

actually, there's a couple of money changer ard central market, kotaraya or masjid jamek area which gives great rates.

Rupiah? downtown is best place. why? many foreign workers "flooded" downtown, money changers here is ready to lower the rate for volumns

hahah ...KL people always said "Lok Po"(cantonese), going downtown. There's where all the buses & trains.

"Puduraya, Puduraya!!" ..... "Kotaraya, Kotaraya!!! " ..."Central Market, Central Market........." If you ever travel by Metro Bus/SJ Bus going to KL city, u never miss those shouts by conductors.

Based on my experience,

Bring the local currency alongside the USD. If you don't have credit card, your maybank card with Visa Plus facilities will help out. You need to activate the features first, so you can withdraw anywhere in the world...

The best bargain to change your money will be at the Avenue K money changer near the food court, they have slightly lower mid rate and can ask for some discounts if your lucky biggrin.gif

USD is pretty low. Most bring brit quid or euros.
maybankcard supports cirrus or maestro. with that alone u can withdraw in most parts of the world. cant say for african continent. never been there.
Avenue K got 2 which one ? The one nearer to the underground Kim Gary or the G floor ? coz if its the one near Kim Gary then i'd say u're dead wrong.

OK..Just found out that wawasan money changer (The one in basement Ctr Court Mid Valley) is having a webiste:

http://www.wawasanmoneychanger.com.my/exchangeRates.asp

Cool now everyone here can use this as the benchmark.....For sure no other place that I hv checked even from Port Klang/PJ/Puchong & KL having such pricing......the bad thing about them- Parking rate RM3 at Mid Valley during weekend & probably distance/toll/petrol going there... sad.gif

another place for cheaper rate would be at Kepong Jusco & Carrefour. Both are the same company. The one in Jusco are next to the escalator at G/F

Latest news - Seksyen 14 PJ money changer @ shoplot, near digital mall, near KFC (just few shops beside it) offers pretty good rates.

chinese yuan - 52.7

accepts cheque only if u're a regular customer. thats a method of payment i long for ! i hate carrying so much ringgit around. its unsafe and unpractical.

Was @ Best Rate Avenue K. Changed HKD5k. Rate was HKD100 = MYR46.4. Not too bad, considering it's in the city. Convenient location.

Others like GBP & AUSD fluctuate allot. They're having a tough time moving around the cash and stashing it somewhere. AUSD today @ Best Rate is AUSD1 = MYR2.49 (If you Buy). Sell is AUSD1 = MYR2.22. Fluctuates everyday and yesterday, AUSD selling was around MYR2.40 only. Today increase 9cents!!!

Keep a look out for GBP & AUSD. They are quite unstable right now in the Exchange Market. Up & Down everyday. Either way, you can't control. A matter of luck sometimes. hehehe... All the best! Am off to HK now...

change some thai baht last month at 10.45 for 100bath. used credit card to buy levis jeans at bkk, when the mastercard statement comes, the rate turns out to be cheaper @ 10.39 only. My advice... use credit card rather than change too much foreign note.

forgot to mention, i change at mid-valley, the best rate in town. and also, if u're going to bkk, u can change at SUper Rich green colour over there.. almost the same or even better than mid valley.

forgot to mention, i change at mid-valley, the best rate in town. and also, if u're going to bkk, u can change at SUper Rich green colour over there..  almost the same or even better than mid valley.

Brother, not all Money changers in Mid Valley are cheap..U go to the wrong one  doh.gif ...This is the correct one beside San Fransisco Coffee!:
sure i know... wawasan sentosa.. and the rate is usually better late afternoon compared to morning.

the rate in bkk is great if u go to super rich green colour, dun go to bank la.. sure will suck your blood. And mastercard is good.... hehe........

Oh OK... blush.gif Nevertheless I do notice that using CC in oversea sometime cheaper...especially when there is great fluctuation of that currency after exchanging in M'sia.

BTW, For those hate the que at Wawasan & MV at Midvalley, can try Sunway Pyramid money changer located at Makaresh new wing....can't remember the name but it's inside one of the convenience store. The published rate is abit higher than Wawasan but once u negotiate wth them and asking Wawasan rate. they do accept thumbup.gif ..Also those money changers surrounding Port Klang & Klang can also negotiate using Wawasan as benchmark.. thumbup.gif

Today's AUD selling at 2.46. Wawasan price. It's been that price for quite awhile already. Or is it I'm looking at the wrong one? Never changed money on my own before so a bit confused. Help!

nolah.... merchants that accept visa 99% accept mastercard as well, dun worry. i dunno y ppl hav perception that mastercard is for local use only, visa for international use... this is totally wrong.

i bought my levi's at the factory outlet store at bigC ground floor. levi's 539 men's jeans - THB1250 only.. my gf bought a pair THB1350. its freaking cheap.. i heard that the levi's store at centralworld give good discount also, but i never hav the time to shop there. Don't worry all these jeans are original. u can google around to find out how to differentiate a fake one.

Now the thing is this
The place im living now have its own currency - say TTD

TTD is falling against RM
USD is rising against RM
TTD is neither falling nor rising against USD (same)
GBP is falling against all

Should I change my TTD to USD or GBP?
GBP might rise again, and USD might fall.....

Wawasan or MV Forex in Mid Valley. And also the one in Sungei Wang, at ground floor I think...don't remember the name...best rate?

Anyway does anyone know if I can change 1000 Thai Bhat to smaller denominations at KLIA(where?) or Suvarnabhumi Airport? The money changer didn't wanna give me smaller notes(or don't have).

Hi guys, you all can check the rates here >http://www.wawasanmoneychanger.com.my/exchangeRates.asp. Wawasan is one of the best rates in the city areas, but if you want higher, then should go those at your home. Cos I always get higher rates (compared to Wawasan) at Jusco Kepong or Carrefour Kepong. The one in BB Plaza is located nearby Al-Ikhsan Sport Shop at LG.

Anyone knows whr can get lower rates for Hong Kong dollars?
yesterday when I went to MidValley, the board is showing 46.4 for $100.

but I can recommend one License Money Changer which I personally found that the rates given by them are considerably cheap.

Viet Dong is not a popular currency here. I would suggest you to convert USD and change them into Dong in Vietnam. Popular places to buy Dongs in Vietnam are the goldsmiths.

I think nobody can answer you...
coz nobody can predict the exact exchange rate so its more advisable to change a little each mth..
it may increase a lot next year or it may also drop a lot next year..
i rather it drop then increase.. coz if increase i have to pay a lot more but if drop at least i dont need to pay much more..
so my advise is buy now..but its really up to u to decide

Yes. They are the cheapest currently but there are few or more that can match him. I found out another Money Changer in Sg Wang Plaza (Not the one recommended by others here) located in the mid row of LG level. (Libra Jaya). Their rate actually exactly the same as Wawasan. (I compare Wawasan rate b4 going there y'day to change US$.

The advantage of Libra Jaya compare to Wawasan is they allow changing to smaller denomination. Even if u ask for smaller US$1 notes, they will give!! This is not the case in Wawasan...always give big denomination!! So for those wanted similar rate to Wawasan but needs smaller denomination....Sg Wang Libra Jaya is another alternative...(This round I din chk the money changer closer to the entrance. Previously they are pretty expensive compare wth Libra...)

Hello.

I know nothing about currency exchange and i'll travel to australia soon (june). This forum help me a lot.

1. I want to know other charges or commission that money changer might charge when we change currency?

2. I do some quick research (MYR to AUD)

In Malaysia, Maybank sell 2.566 and buy 2.432
Wawasan sell 2.520 and buy 2.490

In Brisbane airport, Travelex use 2.3310

- My Question, Which one is better? I see Wawasan offer a good price. But Travelex is better. Can you advice me whether to convert here or when i reach brisbane? Any other recommendation?

N.B.: AUD a bit higher now (about 2.50 on 20/3/09) compare to mid of Feb to early of mac. at that time 1 AUD play around 2.34 to 2.42 MYR.

Thanks

I am going to Korea in April. Since you said that krea economic is getting bad, shouldn't that with the same amount of MYR, I can buy more korea won? But korea won is still getting higher. Any idea that how much MYR should I change to korea won given below circumstance:

1) I go by tour, the tour is all in only not include 2 meals.
2) I want to buy gifts for my friends but not ginseng that kind of too expensive things

How much should I change ?

I have few thousands USD in UOB Bank. Still looking for the good rate to exchange back to MYR.

Anyone would like to get USD in notes or in account, please let me know. Can be arranged for mid rate between bank's bid and offer.

Banks' bid and offer are high and wonder where I can exchange back to MYR with lower spread?

Just came back and manage to buy HKD with reasonable rate from Giant Kelana Jaya.

I did survey at 1U, Digital Mall, The Curve, etc.. all of them sell at 47.10 or 47.20.

Giant Kelana Jaya sell at 47.00 nett.

I know midvalley give better rate but too far to get there smile.gif

just curious know more about currency...
sorry for noob question ya..
1) how often the exchange rate update on the money changer board?
(how do most of you compare the rate, as the rate can be differ in the next minutes?)
2) what is buy and sell? if we change rm to usd, which to we use as a conversion rate?
3) is exchanging currency same like investing forex? What make the diff btwin the 2? can we still have the same expected earning as forex by just exchanging the currency with money changer...

really appreciate your reply..

1) Most of us refer to this one...It's one of the cheapest (probabaly the cheapest) Money changer in Malaysia & rates much better than Banks.:
http://www.wawasanmoneychanger.com.my/exchangeRates.asp

& yes the rate changes everyday! but not realy by minutes, that's are for forex traders

2) Buy meaning they buy from you & sell meaning there are selling to you. So if u are changing RM1000 to USD at buy=3.595 & sell=3.615, u will be expecting to get 1000/3.615 =US$276.60.

SO if u decided to change you mind & change back to RM, they willo buy back at RM3.595 =RM994.40 ..Meaning the diff of RM5.623 is their commission/margin...pretty small indeed...

So if u see the spread between buy/sell is huge, the money changer is reaping huge profit!!

3) Based on my limited knowledge (Correct me if I'm wrong), Forex trading is only in selected licensed houses (Normally banks) & sanction by Bank Negara (Not usre SC involve). So you buy/sell via them..The best we as public is buy/sell at money changers...haha..or some form of bank deposit in foreign currency...I bet those saving in Aussie/New Zealand $$ will be crying out now..

Hi.. i might be travelling to the US East Coast soon so i'll need to change some RMs to USDs.. the current rate is around RM3.50.. there's 2 money changer nearby my home in equine park, my question is:

how do i determine if its good to change money there? based on the current rate of rm3.50 for 1usd, if the money changer charges me rm3.70 per 1 usd.. is that considered reasonable? or very bad exhange rate for us? then what exchange rate values are considered good for us?

thanks!

this is how i see it whenever i change money. you look at the selling rate cuz they will be selling you other country notes. if those eg, 1 USD to RM 3.50.. then another one is to RM 3.70, i wil take the smaller ones. cuz after u divided up, u get more if the diff is small.

correct me if im wrong. or if got easier ways please let me knoe. cuz i always noob in ffront of money changer for a long time before i change cash. hehe

Imagine this scene:

Money Changer A ...gives you US 1. You need to pay him RM3.50
Money Changer B ...gives you US 1. You need to pay him RM3.70

Which one u choose???

if both side by side ofcourse we choose A..

but what if..

Money Changer A ...gives you US 1. You need to pay him RM3.50
But his place is a 25km drive..

Money Changer B ...gives you US 1. You need to pay him RM3.70
B is located just 2km from your house..

so how?

In this case, it's all depending on the amount you're going to change..anyway the diff between RM3.50 & another RM3.70 cannot be so great!! Normally differences only about RM0.05 to RM0.10 among money changers. & those quoted higher than Wawasan Money changers, u can actually bargain wth them by showing them Wawasan rate for that date.

For me the distance does matter & thus, normally i used Wawasan rate & telling those Money changers in Puchong (Within 5km from my hse) that I wanted the closest to that rate..and suprisingly they willing to match...probably RM0.02 higher than wawasan...win-win no need go so far to Wawasan or Sg Wang Plaza

unless your capacity is huge, u shudnt be worrying about the diff in rates that others are offering.

u change by the thousands what can your marginal difference be wor ? u change by tens of thousands then ok la, can see a bit of diff. kenot understand some ppl. pennywise pound foolish.

i did mine at Jusco Equine.. The rate for usd that i got was 3.55 and i think it was quite ok as i dont wanna drive a long way to other places.. I checked out maybank and they were selling 1usd for 3.62.. Abit pricey.. Well i'm in the states now.. I'm using my credit card and the rate is reasonable too.. It's still RM3.55 for 1USD..

I'm also interested in money changers who offers good rate in PJ area .

Currently, I change at the money changer in 1 Utama basement cos near my workplace. But not sure how the rate is compared to others.

I know Mid Valley rate is much better but too far for me to drive all the way there.

I'm quite confused to how and when the money changers update their rates.

At the beginning of the day, do they follow the previous day rates ? They usually only update the rates once a day only right? And I think the actual rates for the day only comes out around 12 noon.

Anyone has any idea?

I'm quite confused to how and when the money changers update their rates.

At the beginning of the day, do they follow the previous day rates ? They usually only update the rates once a day only right? And I think the actual rates for the day only comes out around 12 noon.

Anyone has any idea?

they update their rates based on when they hedge

They based their rates on the same source that yahoo finance base on. Say for instance http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bc?s=sgdmyr=X&t...l=on&z=m&q=l&c=

Rates might change noon-afternoon but after night time they won't change anymore, even if actual rates have moved dramatically since then.

So if currency so and so went up after afternoon/evening, u can actually dash over to buy it cheaper at the morning/afternoon rate before the next day when they'll update the price.

Wow GBP more higher now, regret not buy few months back...my trip to London on Oct. So need to wait or just buy it, and if I'm going to Paris too, is it advisable to exchange to Euro here or at that country.

Hey all, I'll be going to Norway soon. Would it be advisable to exchange all my cash locally (RM4k-RM5k) to Euro, or exchange some then withdraw the rest at the ATM when I'm running out of money? I've activated Cirrus for overseas withdrawal. Is the bank rate reasonable? I am aware of the RM8 fees my bank will be charging me for each withdrawal, but it seems like I won't worry about carrying the cash so much...

it would be better if you carry the euro amount you will need in a week.. the rest should stay in the bank.. withdraw only when u really need it.. the bank charges for me are really reasonable.. carrying too much cash is a big risk..

ok, then i offer you 2.80, then you say you will sell only with rate 2.83

DUN POST IT IF YOU DONT WANNT SELL ! if you already got your rate, DONT ask people offer you !

Waste my time and PM and SMS ... keep waiting you only ..

better calculate how much u save by going to wawasan in midvalley versus the petrol and parking cost to go there..
no point going to wawasan if you cant save.. try some small money changer outlets near your house..
i did the same and got really low rates and was happy i dont need to drive all the way to midvalley..

I find that most banks don't sell Korean Won in Malaysia. I am now in South Korea already, anyone knows how can my parents transfer money to me with the least possible transaction fees/currency exchange loss? Thanks

if you have a maybankcard, just ask your parent to transfer the money to your bank acc.. then use your atm card at any atm over there with the visa interlink/star logo.. you will be able to withdraw korean currency..

also you need to inform maybank that you are in korea and would like to use your atm card over there..

i did it this way when i was in US last month.. the rates from maybank were good enuff for me..

i was charged USD2.50 per withdrawal..
so dont withdraw too often.. try to withdraw an amount that will last you at least a week..

on comparing the exchange rate that maybank gives..
mine was 1usd=rm3.58 (3.55 if you go money changer so maybanks rate is decent)..

I have USD in bank but the bank doesn't have sufficient USD notes for me to withdraw and then I exchange it with money exchangers.

Anyone here needs USD in TT transfer? We can arrange on the mid rate of Big/Ask. You must have USD a/c in banks.

At LCCT, CIMB counter, a person can convert RM to foreign currency, at departure.
On arrival back to Malaysia, if the person has any unused foreign currency, he/she can change back to RM at the original rate (rate changed at departure).

Is the above true? Of course have to keep receipt when the original transaction was made, so the counter person know what rate to change back.

the rate is determined by via/master network not of the bank since the transaction is done in their network.
it was mentioned in the first few pages in this thread.

Depending, just do some research by googling current market rate & comnpoare wth wawasasn sentosa mioney changer rate..(As posted by joeylyn)...if rate bad, just change in HK. using yen.

Just like Taiwan, vietnamese dong & peso Phillipine..Not worth changing in malaysia bcos rate so bad...easier to change 1st to US$ & thereafter change at the respective country...(Not all hor...)

agak-agak only-lah..money changer for sure need to survive via commission but sometime dsue to lack of demand on certain currency, the commission here in Malaysia really siao-siao wan...normally i fthye rate too out from market, I will change a bulk of it to USD 1st & thereafter to the country currency when I reached. I only can a smalll amount of ~RM100 to that currency for emergency purposes only.

just do abit of homework...

Added on November 9, 2009, 2:48 pmcertain currency that are badly traded in malaysia is not RM1 or RM2 diff.even at RM0.50 diff is also a lot dy if u are converting >RM1,000..for eg..let say avg RM1=USD3.5, but the money changer asking for RM4

if u change RM1000, u lost almost RM40 liao. well if u change RNM2000, u lost RM80 & so on...

so it's up to u, certain ppl dun mind the RM40/RM1000 but certainm ppl do...but when u face wth problem for eg...Vietnam dong not all changer wanted to change, and once u find one, the xchange rate diff between market is so huge...I remember RM1=8000 vietnamese dong early last year but getting from money changer here, RM1= 5000 dong..You lost 3000 dong straight away!!

no specific just google & just check the avg wth the one posted in wawasan http://www.wawasanmoneychanger.com.my/exchangeRates.asp ..if almsot similar, it's safe to change here...otherwise if the diff is huge, changing there using other than RM probably better

Yes, i also suggest the midvalley (near escalator)..got 2 money changer...both are good..check the rate for both first..

And for those who are planning to do arbitrage (change to other currency before changing to the currency that you want to get more 'profit')...might not happen since the rate will become equilibrium (so that no one will make arbitrage profit out of nothing)...and u might end up losing some money too...

My advise...just change ur currency by going for a good rate.

Yes, Amex/Visa/MC do charge for admin, surcharge on top on exchange rates. Amex was the highest which is 2.5%. Its vary from bank to bank.

Last night, I found a better money changer than Wawasan.

It is 786 Star which located at 1 utama (near to Cold Storage).

e.g. 06/01/2010 rate:
RM3.385 -> USD1 compared to RM3.39 -> USD1 (Wawasan)
RM10.98 -> NTD100 compared to RM11.05 ->NTD100 (Wawasan)

Sigh.. i just saw this thread.. If i check earlier 2 days ago then i might be save more money.. i changed Rm 3000 with 10.80 rates which is Rm 1k = 9,259 bath which total up 27,780 baht .

I just called wawasan money changer just now Rm 3 k = 28570 at 10.50 rate . Kena con 792 baht by money changer at Mines SHopping Mall ( Serdang). Even the rate more worst at Endah Parade Carrefour.

Reupdate : Just went Midvalley to change another 2 k . I look for 3 changer in midvalley found that the cheapest 10.48 is the Rapid Million Sdn Bhd . It is located inside a magazine shop in LG floor. Wawasan money changer and another 1 near beside it hv the same rates 10.50 for baht and even alot of ppl queue.

I saw all the currency rates is simply abit lower compare to another 2 money changer and another better things is no need to queue as its located in the magazine shop and most ppl hardly can see it.

Hmmm.....I'm confuse of calculation from ringgit to THB.

From Wawasan,

QUOTE
100        THAI BHAT   Buying 10.300000   Selling 10.500000

Thats means, if I change Rm 8k, what I got is :

(8000/10.5)*100 = THB76,190

If change with h4e,

(8000/10.4)*100 = THB76,923

If I want to change at Phuket, for example

http://www.bangkokbank.com/Bangkok%20Bank/...es/Default.aspx

QUOTE
MYR   Malaysia: 10, 50, 100   Buying 8.95   Selling 10.01
[Unit : Baht per 1 unit of foreign currency]

Thats mean :

8000*8.95 = THB71,600

All my calculation correct or not ?

I was looking the same method. Change half with h4e and another half at money changer in Phuket. But from seeing Bangkok Bank rates, do you think money changer rates in Phuket can compete with ours?

So this means that if I want to change RM to NTD, for every 100 Taiwan Dollar, I'm buying from them for RM10.9...

And if I have any NTD, and I wanted to change it back to RM, the banker will buy it back from me for RM10.7 for every 100NTD...

Did I get this right?

Yes correcto too.

But for those currency that are badly traded here..& one of it..NT$, it's better to change to US$ 1st & thereafter to NT$ at Taipei Airport...read the 1st page of Taiwan thread for more info.

BTW, the market rate of NT$ is ~10.50..almost similar to Thai bath but u are getting it at RM10.9-RM11.2 in KL...beware...By changing to US$ & NT$ at Taipei, U get ~ RM10.60

Sigh.. i just saw this thread..

*
hahaha...actually, wawasan website show the lowest rate was at RM10.40 per 100Baht somewhere at the mid January.

But anyhow, can buy from me. Not much baht left though, but my rates are always between 10.40 to 10.45.

Lately, HKD went up from 43.6 to 44.5 but it's starting to drop again.

Is HKD going down further? Any advice?

well the lowest i could remember that HKD went was only around 42.50 and i don't think it could go lower than that

HKD has been hovering around around 43 to 44.50 since then

If you are just changing for 3000 HKD for holiday then difference for 44.10 (yesterday rate) and 43 is Rm33 only. biggrin.gif

USD has come down a bit to day ..if any body wishing to buy HKD or RMB another 3 to 4 rates might be coming down...proceed with your purchases if you find the rates to be cheap..

Hi guys,

Sorry if this was asked before. I searched this topic but didn't get a similary query.

As a Malaysian who is going to Singapore next month for a short vacation, and to gain the most out of currency exchange, would it be better for me to:

a. Exchange minimal amount of RM -> S$ in Johor Bahru before going into Singapore, then exchanging more spending money amounts of RM -> S$ in Singapore itself.

or

b. Exchange all planned spending money RM -> S$ in Johor Bahru then spend all in Singapore.

Wondering which is the better deal.

Many thanks!

U can google for S$ money exchange to check.

Normally M'sian will change 1st at the border. Normally i will stop by at the 1st food court opp the border or Sity square..all having almost similar rate or slightly competitive but not much diff...Since u gonna change very small amt..just change only lah....0.005 diff will not save u much unless u bring in in Thousand

What I know changing in Singapore no good!

Hi, looking to convert AUD to GBP.

Is it a must to convert from AUD -> MYR then MYR -> GBP? Any way I can directly convert?

Exchange some GBP first. When reach UK, then only exchange AUD -> GBP, perhaps the loss will be less that double conversion.

GBPMYR pair is on downtrend.

depends on how much you want to change.

i.e If i want to get 5000 GBP. I will start changing now by 1000 GBP each. As we dont know where is the lowest.

But 4.8 is relative low as it has gone very close to pre 97 crisis level (It was around 4.5 before the 1997 crisis) and it haven't gone so low ever since 1997

wawasan system is down.

so it is better for you to come over to Bukit Bintang and walk around.
The rate fluctuate everyday so you have to check.

I going to UK soon and found that bank offer better rate compare with money changers. The problem is bank do not have currency notes of most of the countries.

So I have an idea of getting travellers cheque from the Maybank which provide better rate rather than exchange with money changer.

Are there any service charges for travellers cheque?

If yes, roughly how much? Was thinking of doing this too as well as the rates at the money changer are much lower(buy)/higher(sell) than the actual rates now.

Just changed Singapore Dollar at a money changer in puchong, rate was 2.34, as mid valley rate. This shop is opposite maybank bandar puteri inside a mamak restaurant, forgot the name of that restaurant. Their rates some of them better than mid valley. Can negotiate to get the best rates.
