Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q)
1. Why should i choose Sony VAIO while there are a lot of laptops from different brand offer the same/higher specification with cheaper price? 1. Branding. : Yes, have to admit this. any Sony notebook will cost a lil bit expensive than the one with similar specs. 2. Quality. : I have experienced and honestly said that their notebook quality can be qualified from mediocre to elite. I'm satisfied with its built quality, its more sturdy than the Acer i used earlier if i want to compare them. Its always the best to play around with the notebooks at their store. This apply to any product you are going to buy. 3. Design : The notebook is design to have decent looks and it is always top-notch when Sony designing their notebook. 4. LCD: Beauitful LCD screen ever. period. *Thanks to Miyabi for the useful info. 2. Which model of VAIO is suitable for me? - Depends on your needs and preferences. If you just using laptop for lightweight usage like office work and browsing internet, consider the P series because of its total portability. If you want a bigger screen, portable and more faster, consider the TT series. If you need a powerful, lightweight, portable PC have a go on Z series. If you need all in one PC which is good in performance, go for CR or SR. If you need the best performance with video editing function and such, consider FW or AW. You want a desktop replacement, please consider the TP series which is comes with Blu Ray and HDMI output or JS. If you have PS3 or handycam or Blu Ray player, consider the LN model because it comes with HDMI input function. 3. I have problems with my VAIO, who and where should i refer to? - You can refer to any Sony Styles outlets which are located in KLCC, Berjaya Times Square, The Curve Damansara and Johor Baharu. The friendly Sony Styles staffs will advise you what you have to do and will try to solve your issue or answering your questions. If however they are unable to resolve the issue, you will be advised to either send your VAIO to the Sony's service center directly yourself or you can send your VAIO to Sony Style. They will help you to send your VAIO to the service center. 4. Which one is faster? Send directly to Sony Service Center or to the Sony Style? - Sony Style is just the collection center. They don't have any technical team. They need to bring your VAIO to the service center however it took arround 2 weeks to get the issue resolved. If you want to get it done quickly, just head directly to their Service Center. 5. Where is Sony Service Center located? - 6. How much do i need to pay for servicing in case my VAIO's warranty is already expired? - Sony Service Center team will escalate the issue and will inform you what is the issue your VAIO is having and will quote you the pricing before repairing. The pricing/charges is depends on the problem like the spare part that is need to be replaced etc. 7. The charges is bloody expensive, can i decide to not to repair my VAIO? - Yes. However there is small estimation refused charge which is RM20 8. What is V.O.S? Do i need it? - VAIO Oversea Service. 9. I would like to purchase a VAIO by installment. Does Sony Style provide 0% installment scheme? - Yes. From Maybank, Citibank, RHB Bank, HSBC and Standard Charted credit card. 10. For Li-ion batteries of video cameras or computers of other brands, the same amount of power will be drained when used in the same way. * For different models of VAIO notebook, the power consumption remains the same, disregarding the status of the computers. For different models of VAIO notebook in the same status, the discharged power quantity is basically the same in a specific period. Therefore, compared to computers with larger capacity batteries, computers with small capacity batteries may run for a shorter period of time. ※ Besides the capacity of battery, other factors such as the aging degree or temperature will influence the time of totally discharging. Please refer to the following example for comparison of computers with larger capacity batteries and computers with small capacity and the running time. Suppose there are two computers with different types of batteries as follows. * Computer A: battery with 11.1V output voltage/4300mAh capacity * Computer B: battery with 11.1V output voltage/2000mAh capacity Suppose the consumed quantity of power is 200mAH per day, what is surplus capacity of battery 10 days later? * Computer A ：4300 - 200 x 10 = 2300 (mAh) about 53% * Computer B ：2000 - 200 x 10 = 0 (mAh) 0% Thus, computer B with small capacity of power finishes discharging first. i recently purchased a Vaio S117GG. I found that the sound quality sucks big time. The volume is very low even after the volume control is already max. On top of that the sound quality is horrible.
 Anyway to improve the volume and sound quality? Thanks in advance. |

Ok i will start out with This is a review on the E series and a small comparison with the CW http://blog.screenaid.com/2010/03/31/sony-...-series-review/ Do you guys think that the CW have a better quality design compared to the EA? Some reviews and pictures of CW and EA CW Link 1 Link 1 EA Link 2 Link 2 Cw scored higher scores than EA i wonder why. In the website it state that CW can have an alternate battery that give a max of 4.5hours. However, they state that EA only have max of 2.5hours not stating there's an alternate battery but i see the optional accessories the battery that gives CW a 4.5hours battery is also in the EA but they didn't state it in the Specification Specifications CW26 EA16 In the US site they can custom made the EA series and give it a 1600x900 resolution as well but obviously we don't have it =/ I know EA is better than CW but something is holding me back for some reason and i don't know what. Besides that currently i'm using a Toshiba M500-S433 series Here are the specs of it M500-S433 I'm given the chance to change for a EA or a CW as this model have some problem with the compatibility with its hardware as i heard. So yea i like the harman/kardon speaker of the Toshiba and i know i'm slightly degrading when i'm changing it to VAIO. So i need help to clear some of my doubts and i need opinion for this. The EAs look very similar to CW and i think they are meant to replace CW series. Based on the reviews at notebookcheck i would still stick to CW if i have to choose. Speaker wise, i use external speakers so i don't really care.

Besides that currently i'm using a Toshiba M500-S433 series Here are the specs of it M500-S433 I'm given the chance to change for a EA or a CW as this model have some problem with the compatibility with its hardware as i heard. So yea i like the harman/kardon speaker of the Toshiba and i know i'm slightly degrading when i'm changing it to VAIO. So i need help to clear some of my doubts and i need opinion for this. |

i think its the CW series that had the complain of the high pitching sound and so on. It seems its the HDD, read in some other forum.
CW also had battery issues but its actually the BIOS problem according to some CW user. |

Wow, EA series was out... Had some touch and feel with the lappy in Sunway pyramid Sony showroom.. RM4699 EA with supported ATI5650 seem like having 1600x900 resolution.. not bad

To me it doesn't matter much. I just need this notebook to carry whenever i go. I've carried out my old FW and people looking at me as if i'm carrying a 42 inch Plasma TV.
So this EA is all i need for now. |

Or you can visit their service center branch at KLCC and The Curve. Times Square is only a service collection center. Got any problem, then can just seek help from the HQ or any of these Sony Style outlets. |

My 3 year old presario boots up 20 sec faster than this Vaio. Anyway, not sure about W7 (haven't tried using Notebook Hardware Control on my other Vaio). got myself an VPCX127LG with the RM300 cash back (result RM4999), couldn't be more happier than that. i prefer the black one though, but travelling down to singapore + paying RM900 extra just for the black + 3G WWAN doesn't sound quite right... planning to get the X size battery but pretty pricey... |

Can't exactly say which is / isn't bloatware, so I'll need a list of installed components to be able to tell you which to uninstall. The free bag worth RM99 is Targus. It looks water proof to me.. but at the same time the quality build isnt the best. (Rather flimsy and material looks under RM99

Well the ASUS N82jv has got USB 3.0, better battery life because of the Optimus gpu. Aside from that, everything else seems the same. also, does the vaio have international warranty? I think that the ATI 5650 GPU is better (Supports Direct X 11, future proof) Where as the Optimus does not. Im not sure about the international warranty for Vaio tho. Aside from that, everything else seems the same. Yup, the Roxio Easy Media Creator is a burning software. My opinion is that standalone software like CDBurnerXP does the job easier and does not clog up your computer.I think that the ATI 5650 GPU is better (Supports Direct X 11, future proof) Where as the Optimus does not. Bear in mind that the warranty offered by Best Denki is y best Denki. So anything happens to your set after 1 year, you have to send it to best Denki. You send to SOny service center personally, you have to foot the bill yourself.

if you're comparing the 5650 for lappie and 5650 for desktop, generally for laptops is underclocked a bit to cope with the heat dissipation of the laptop itself.

The boot up time depends on the load of the startup apps and system setting. Mostly the startup apps and services.
Win7 has some weird behavior when startup. It will be fast if there is no AV (antivirus) installed. With AV it will tax a bit on the loading time. Mine has this kind of startup. Sometimes VAIO Gate start first before the Google Desktop, sometime vice-versa. Sometime it stuck at Welcome screen then suddenly boom, the desktop appear with all the services loaded... Maybe you can speed up by using any defragmenting software that can rearrange the windows boot file and startup apps like Defagler by the same publisher of CCleaner. Others I think are not freeware. |

Disabling Vaio Gate at startup, and manually accessing it later once the computer starts up is a much more plausible option. Just the usual brightness toggle. with the default setting i compare with Dell Inspiron 14z, dell look much more better color... i am worry there not much different after configure.. any other EA16 user want to comment about the screen before i took the plunge I suggest you head down to a Sony Style and have a look at it yourself. |

coz BluRay is in 5.1 channel audio set up. There's only 2 speakers in the laptop.
Windows will automatically make the 5.1 into 2 channel, but the result is, it will be low (the volume). Nothing wrong with your set. |

I'm having a problem with my F/W here. The part where we insert the a/c plug on my laptop is loosen up. I'm so afraidthat the whole part will break apart from my laptop. And its no longer being covered under warranty. Anyone know how much is the fee to repair my F/W ? and how long it takes? for the 5.1 channel thingi, get a good headphone . the speaker of vaio is like a handphone opened loudspeaker....nvr trust the integrated speakers....other than toshibas XD
i got myself an AD700 for rm450, totally worth the money, i even pump it with asus xonar u1 (rm200) |

yesterday i install windows 7 ultimate. but now theres 3-4 thing didnt works like bluetooth n biometric sensor..but i'm still looking for the driver. But the main issue is, all button like S1 & S2 and stamina mode all not working, worst come to worst the display is a bit small like in stamina mode...not full screen, got black on left n right screen.. what should i do? i thought win vista driver are compatible with win 7... |

im having cw26 too....the ticking while web browsing is normal...or i would say i thought it is sound effect O.O so i guess it has nothing to do with it. bring it to vaio and ask them to replace 1 for you.....but i would prefer to buy a sdd myself and pluck it in =D

I got few question to ask.
Question 1: When i buy my vaio laptop, its come with a window xp proffesional installer. My question is --> if i get another laptop(any brand), can i use that installer to install on the laptop?? or only can install in sony laptop?? Question 2: For creating recovery cd for my laptop, i just click recovery center, then put in an empty DVD then click start. is it that's all?? Question 3: For the extended warranty certificate, i bought near the end of february, and the person told me that sony will send to me within 3 months. Until now i still haven't get yet, should i call them and ask?? is it ok without the extended warranty cert |

ya, i OC mine to 625 - 1375 - 1090 and make it as default LOL
stock clock was 475 - 1045 - 680 LOL and its still as cool as cucumber... i think i will make a recovery first before i DL the firmware.... |

for the overclock thingi, you can refer to NBR forum. the experts there had tried numerous time to get the highest possible stable clock. check out vaio EA owner lounge.
you might need to download EVGA precision or MSI afterburner, then follow the clock NBR forumers recommended. Added on July 7, 2010, 4:13 pmim nt sure for EA16 but cw26 is criminally underclocked, expecially the memory clock. This post has been edited by quest_5692: Jul 7 2010, 04:13 PM |

Maybe overclock is not a good idea though. Seen in youtube, where overclocking went wrong, explosion, fire and mny things could happen. Worst thing is, wreck my vaio forever

well, theres always risk for OC, if you dont need it, dont do it.
but i would say stick to NBR guide you wont go wrong. i tried to OC abit more than NBR guide and my GPU straight crash....thats the only time i do it over. advantage of OC, etc ATI HD5850 if you OC 11% you actually get a stock HD5870. its exactly the same as 5870, so you saved some bucks. |

Guys, i want to buy the ea16 tomorrow, I heard that vaio ea has several problems in it. especially the whistle noise it make from the processor. Do you have any idea what is this? can it be stopped? DOes it really annoying? And, how many is the battery cell in the battery? i mean is it 4 cell, or 6 cell or 9 cell? How long battery can last if surfing the web only? Thank you.

annoying or not it depends to user...u can hear smtg when in a totally silent room....but my fren say he got no problem with it as he has a closed cup headphone. 6 cell, battery life on wifi is less than 3h...

at least my cw i5 have it...and my frens ea16 i5 also...
well, im not so sure about ea16's sound source but im pretty sure my cw26 noise is from the fan or heat sink or watsoever that keep the laptop cool instead of the processor. well, i always tell myself, its because of the loud fan, my laptop can stay so cool all the time. =) if its not loud, then the fan aint doing his job well XD hope it helps |

No2. Sony center in lowyat, one of them giving hampers ( got mouse, cooling pad, *all of them i believe.), 9-11 july 2010 * tomorrow!!, sony center one-utama giving many free give as well!!. I surveyed them all.

BTW, have you really tested all your softwares on Win7 a not? Coz not all will utilize Win 7 Virtual PC mode fully. I have some games meant for Win 98 also can be played using Win7. |

reformatting vaio is as easy as abc....press assist, click recover, click factory default lol....just did that last week cuz i screwed up my registry files and system32...and everything really goes back to factory default =)

FYI
For those who are loyal fan to Vaio Media Gallery application... There is a hiccup in the installation file (Update version 1.2.0.18020) available from Support page. The only solution is to uninstall the current version and install from Vaio Recovery Centre / Disc (shipped version) first then install the update. I believe it won't affected user who is still using the shipped version from day one. Confirmed on both Z and Y, because both have been installed an update prior to the latest. Cheers |

yes its 2.5". ok 1st go to vaio centre and complain. kacau 99 dem....but if u think of getting a SSD, u might want to wait till the release of G3 intel SSD, den there will be alot of 2nd hand G2 ssd available in ebay. =D but if u can afford, of course go for SSD =D |

hi all.. been mia from this thread.
i bought a sony s series in feb 2010, so now..i think got virus or smtg...for my hardisk and backup partition...usually got alot of space ( blue bar ) but recently it keeps on being "full" and turns red...i didnt download anything that will make it grow that fast..both c and d disk. when i watch movie.. it will be like tersekat sekat.. and when i on my pc..it will say smtg .dll missing bla bla.. so i dont think i've ever done a backup/reformat cd ( dumb me i know for procrastinate it ) how do i go about it???? i mean i dont have any cd with me now? |

guys, have you experience your lcd emits a buzzing sound before? after owning the laptop for about 2 years, i recently only found out this noise, strange thing is that the noise will go away after few minutes. I google up and find that many people faced this problem before, different brand different series of laptop, something to do with the screen brightness, but they never mention a solution. Any idea?

Hi guys,
I am planning to get Vaio soon and need your opinions I was planning to get the VPC-Z 128 GG/XQ which comes with a i7-620M which is Dual Core, Until I come across an older version of the Vaio Z (VPC-Z 117 GG/Z) which comes with an i7-720M which is Quad Core. I know the 128GG/XQ is newer but performance wise, which is better ? Thanks |

lol, i sold my tragus bag right away to another forumer for rm120 because its too big for me...as if it can fit 17' lol....but then if u r a vaio die hard fan that bag have a lot of show off point....lol silver logo, vaio zip, vaio wording in the bag.....but if u gt a 14' or 13' its too overkill...

The EB17 with bluray already EOL and discontinued.
However, the EB22 with Windows 7 Starter can be found at Courts/Senheng/Best Denki/Harvey Norman or those bangla laptop stalls at lowyat. Dont try Sony Center or Sony Style. For sure, dont have. |

Its the normal product life cycle for Vaios.
Every season= change new model Which is why the value is quite high. A Vaio TZ from 4 years ago can still fetch a 4,000-5,000 price depend on the spec and condition. One of my friend also recently sold his TR (already more than 6 years old) for RM 1,000!!! |

Hi all
I have a question regarding this VPCEA15FG model. It is bought around 2 months ago and it is working very well. However there is one thing that i am still wondering. Why the usb/sata area (the left side of the notebook) could shock me sometimes? I mean like light electric shock. It is kinda annoying when i accidentally hit that place and get shocked Anyone can help? Is my laptop defect? |
