IMHO, I will wait for Maxis/Digi. Warranty is very important(at least for me).

I'm not too sure about the current market but do make sure you do a research on the seller's background even before paying deposit.

I second this. I know people who bought their 3GS with no local warranty from sg.wang/lowyat/sg/us..etc.

A couple of months in, they had problems with the phone and could not do anything with it.

I'll advice those of you that can wait to wait, dont rush into the iPhone 4 Hype just yet. Let our local providers come out with their own UNLOCKED sets.

I will agree with you that those who want to get their hands on one earlier or faster than anyone else should wait. But if the advantage from getting from a country with unlocked sets is a saving, then it may be a viable proposition. Take for example if you get from UK a 16gb which costs about RM2400 and with the 17.5% VAT, the nett price would be a shade below RM2000. If the pricing in Malaysia for the iPhone4 is similar to the 3GS', then there is a saving of about RM500. Wouldn't that be a good enough reason to get from there?

But of course, one should also take into cognizance the warranty but that is the trade off.

The problems with local warranty is that Maxis or DiGi doesn't have the expertise on repairing the unit themselves, all faulty units are sent to Singapore for inspection and if deemed not to be at the end-user's fault, the end user will be dealt with a refurbished set. Users "a couple months" in, will not be issued a brand new iPhone. Unless your iPhone breaks down near purchase date, you will not be issued a brand new iPhone.

Now with that in mind, you will either end up with a refurbished unit, with equal chances of it breaking again (since it is a repaired model), and having to wait for the unit to be inspected in Singapore and shipped back here. There are reports of users having to part ways with their iPhone between 3 weeks to a month before hearing anything back from Maxis. even after waiting for that long, yes, you get a refurbished unit. With that clause "equal chance of it breaking again". And then what? Wait another 3-4 weeks for a second repair job?

Most of the folks who went the Apple-unlocked overseas unit, have people like Crxr to fall back to when and IF our units fails. He may have some scuffle with dissatified parties in the forum, but since my acquaintance with him, he has yet to fail me on his expertise on repairing the iPhones sent his way. I had colleagues with half-dead screens repaired within 30 minutes, and can be used immediately back again after that, WITHOUT the need of sending it over to Maxis, having them mull things over, send to Singapore and hope you get back your iPhone as a reliable unit before it fails again somewhere along the road.

The phrase "warranty" here is only taken as a peace of mind, because the way I see it, Maxis only offers that as a fall-back plan should your iPhones drop dead. Maxis as a telecommunications company has zero expertise on technical repairs and had to outsource them to Singapore for that. So the question here is: Take the Maxis/DiGi iPhones and pray you dont get a faulty unit, otherwise you'll have to go through those steps I've mentioned, or Take the foreign overseas unit and rely on forum member expertise when things go south? Now if you decide to still want to get a Maxis unit and choose to say "hey, I can still have the option of getting the expertise of Crxr for immediate repairs if I want to", consider this. As pointed out previously, after VAT claims, the oversea stocks are up to RM500 cheaper than what's being locally offered. Isn't RM500 more than enough to cover any future cost of repairing your iPhones if the need arises?

I know everyone LOVES the word "warranty" to fall back to, but you will have to consider what KINDS of warranty Maxis or DiGi offers. Unlike other countries, Malaysia does not have a predesignated service center for iPhones, and will be treated as second-tier for repairs in Singapore if the need arises. Now with that in mind, is your mind still at ease with that word "warranty" when it comes what it covers for your Malaysian iPhones?

Echo the warranty overrated sentiment. My phone shop who does iphone repair oso comment, he sent his iphone for service n it took a month n he was like, dammit if i did myself could have fix in 2-3 days XD

But id advise oso against jumping the gun and taking risk. Personally i deal with - parties that guarantee 100% returns - or situation where i can test item on spot at purchase. Standard lah: buyer beware.

Well, same procedure here in UK altho i never sent my iPhone for repair but I once sent my Mac for repair and they quoted me 3 weeks just to replace a DVD drive. I need my mac for daily usage and for me to live 3 weeks without it is like no way. so i ended up buying a dvd cleaner and clean up the dust and its working fine again.

They wont replace you with a new one or refund unless its within 14 days of purchase (standard UK policy). After that you will need to send to diagnose and the procedure follows.

wow. can I assume that you are referring to the UK apple store itself (and not premium resellers)?

because out of honesty, I'm more than happy to pay a premium over in australia because its service is mighty good.

all my iPhones are swapped immediately upon diagnosis.

my MBP's SuperDrive has the exact problem like yours (dusty & will not burn).

made a genius bar appointment and the bloke deduced the problem and told me that it takes about 4 business days for a new SuperDrive to arrive.

so he asks me to take my MBP home first. two days later, a phone call came and was told no genius bar appointment is necessary.

popped in at 11am, loitered around in chadstone and watched a movie.

voilà! done!

there is something that bother me as for iphone 3G and iphone 3GS, we here is maxis always hear their device problem even after 2 weeks or not in a month the phone problem and need to be sent for repair,

and for those who are buying iphone from oversea, i rarely see it has lot problem like iphone in our shore? it is because of our quality built for malaysia or because malaysia have so many user and the phone problem then we heard their phone got button problem, lcd problem etc, as for the oversea unlocked set( as i mention hardware problem not software problem), it seem that the chance of the phone getting broke down is somehow little. it is because we in here who are buying those oversea set really threat our phone nicely or it is because the user of iphone "oversea" set i little and we rarely dont heard any problem with it?

as for me, i really dont care about my warrranty issue with maxis because changing 1 iphone really take a long time to repair/changed into new/refurbish set.. and as from other place they took it sometimes not even e week to change a new iphone or even a day can get the new iphone,

it is because of we dont have apple store and it took times to repair the iphone?

i personally like the data bundle form telco that is what restrain me from buying iphone from oversea set, if not i will jump ship with you guys to get the new iphone from oversea.. =.="
