Read it will be available locally in mid-September.

Thinking of getting an iPhone 3Gs, however the availability and the waiting game is killing my interest. I might get this Hero instead.

Mid sept? i'm skeptical.....but then again under nda so sad.gif smile.gif
You may wanna look at snapdragon ones instead.

3GS availability will be back to normal at end of the month....till then expect to wait or pay thru your teeths for them.

Mid-Sept as from http://bit.ly/Gp9Ip though. Priced at RM2399 and if iPhone 3Gs is not available by early October, I'll hit HTC Hero straight away.

My main concern then will be the essential screen and body protector.

He's testing hero, i'm testing the 'other' android - Donut.

p/s apparently Hero is launching in Msia this week or next....so the lucky person whos testing that unit would have gotten a whole 1-2 weeks on-hand with that unit. Wonder how stable is that version of android.

From several news sites, the price will be RM2399. Oh oh the phone is coming next week? I'm excited XD

With the new update circulating at XDA, I'm very itchy to play with it. Bye bye iPhone, welcome Hero.

Well, until there are more apps for android - OS3 would be still king....for now. The Donut is about as responsive as OS3 ad bot are still faster than Hero's customised shell though.

Oh my... How bad is Android Market actually? Based on my visit to http://www.android.com/ only, I'd say it's mildly bad.

Being 50-50, the striking goodness of iPhone's apps certainly pull me to Apple's side.

But again,

chkhoo76, did you test it with the latest update? It's here.

How about the UI? Is it consistent across various third-party apps?

How about the trackball? Do you think the ball will be easily spoiled, like Sony Ericsson's stick on K series?

I saw some Facebook menu/entries in Hero (specifically from it's Stay Close video). Is it as nice as Facebook app in iPhone?

And someone is selling HTC Hero at RM2500. Check out here!

Only if you are interested of getting it earlier :-)

I talked to a shop in KLCC, they said the price may be at RM2800 something. I personally hope that the price won't be that high. At RM2800 I'd rather get an iPhone 3GS instead.

I'm reading xda, and found out that playing around Android is so much adventurous and fun. If the price is right (please god not RM2800), iPhone 3GS is still NA, I'm certain Hero is my next phone :-)

Previously toying with my SE W series phone, you know updating firmware, change camera driver and add flash menu, I feel very much fascinated.

Now I'm reading more on rooting, custom ROMs and such.

I can't wait to get one.

Hey Levi, are you the one in Starhub previously?

Well i am waiting for the Hero too, or maybe the Magic, can't decide much. But after looking at the video i guess moving onto a virtual keyboard requires confident. Haih.

Currently using the G1 with a modded rom. I was using Palm before this and after that, Windows just doesn't suit me. Android was a big of an enjoyment to use.

@itanium : Hmm, the acer one is using snapdragon?

I see that it lacks a scroller, or does it have a special touch base sensor?

In regards to apps, owning a itouch, i agree that iphone apps are vastly rich in numbers, but if i don't jail break i can't get the app easily.

The most thing i enjoy about android is Functional app for free. =(
Anyway after having widgets and notifications functions, i don't think i can stand an iphone.

naTTan, acer's snapdragon on WM. And i have been using the OS3 before andriod so for the time being the apps on iphone is still better than those available on android - hope for more of those apps soon. Both have their own pro/cons - there is NO such thing as ONE device/platform to rule them all.

True, but as i said the cost factor for a decent iphone apps is seriously discouraging for me at least. Where else android is pretty much free since you always have a decent free app available. Although that being said, it's true as of now iphone app is pretty much kind in the sense of number and functionality, but damn do they cost. (Jailbreak and pirating is a solution if you could called it one.)

There is no one platform to rule it all, and some OS would evolve sooner then later, but as of now, lacking in a proper notification method is a drawback for iphone app, and another critical point would be multi task. Actually i always wonder why the need to limit multi task, isn't iphone phone in general have their own dedicated gpu variant? Couldn't they handle multi task better?

I'm not tryin to say iphone is the best but i'm sure we are intelligent enough to look at the sales figures. It could be apple's marketing strats - no drastic updates if the device sells like hotcakes haha....from a business point of view i would prolly do the same....since everyone's trying to come out with an 'iphone' killer every now and then.....so until other manufacturer takes the mantle, iphone would still be some sort of a yardstick for now. Android market DO need to come out with more productivity apps instead of games....i am not goin to spend rm2k+ on a smartphone just to play games you know.

Just came back from HTC shop at KLCC, and they still don't have any exact date for SIS warranty Hero, and they didn't bring any non-SIS phone neither :-(

And to my amusement, they said now is the prime time for Magic, as they are pushing Magic to as many customer as possible. HTC Hero? Not quite yet :-(

Haiz. I hope I can rely from other shop with SIS warranty.

On the other note, I just played with Magic, and yes the touch screen is not as sensitive as iPhone. I actually scrubs the screen to move around the screen. Not as 'barely touch' to operate an iPhone.

Hmm..actually the acer i'm testing wasnt as sensitive as the iphone the 1st few days but theres not much diff now between the two. Granted i'm sure it will glide better with matt/non-glare surface like on my iphone(personal perference, some ppl prefer glossy surface)

Ok so far i am pretty dissapointed with SIS Malaysia. HTC Magic is a phone with a free OS, but they are charging it at 2.3K, which is ridiculous, Celcom is giving it at 1.4K with a contract of one year only. Even CIMB store is giving it at 1999. So SIS Malaysia can you stop being an ass?

Btw Levi, if you want to root, don't get the SIS, apperently i went to SIS Ipoh, and they say any hacking of the software would break the warranty. =(

Oh is it? Then I guess no point waiting for SIS warranty then. I might as well buy it from garage sales :-) RM2500. At least it's much more cheaper than the projected price, RM2800 (according to Action KLCC branch)

But wait. How about confirmed hardware problem? Touch screen or maybe trackball failure. I don't think rooting will cause that kind of hardware problem.

However, from my reading at xda, they say you can always get back to your official ROM, thus you can get your warranty back.

Yeah i was thinking about that too. I am not sure on the SPL changeability of Magic devices, since they would be using the new SPL.

Btw isn't CIMB store selling it for like RM 1999? CIMB deal

Quite a bargain actually

I hacked my phone, HTC s170, hard spl it, then reflash back to ori rom b4 passing to them for warranty, guess what, it works, twice( 2nd time is because i complain they peel off a lot of the paint).
So, they can't detect any software changes.

U loose the camera, the interface and lotz of memory.

Nice, but not sure if android broken SPL can be paste back on.

But the price is still a con case, they are not actually paying for OS rights ( in regards to android) so what the hell with the price man?

So...CIMB is selling at rm1999 where else they ALSO advertised the retailed value is rm2599.....so...anyone bought a unit from CIMB yet?

Chinese saying.....no such thing as a big frog jumping around - and eventhough there is...bound to be run over by a modded Z350 real bad....like 'squished'.....

SO..until we have a verified CIMB customer with THAT handset(eventhough with obligation++ til rm2599) its vaporware.

In this world - nothing is for free.

p/s actually i agree with another poster earlier about Android sets VS OS3/WM 6.5 sets..............since Android OS is free-READ FOC- the sets should 'by-right' be cheaper compared to others....but then again.'sigh' you know la..capitalist market - they have to make money what.

However you must consider that android is a relatively new OS and requires additional software development and marketing. So it is still acceptable that the handsets are in the same price range. Also you do need to note that Microsoft maybe selling windows mobile at a relative cheap price.

Darkmage12, of course it Magic. naTTan was talking about Magic from the start. We are discussing about the expensive SIS warranty, compared to CIMB's offer. naTTan took the Magic as a comparison :-)

And by the time HTC Hero hits our shore, I hope FlexiShield is here too. I read at HTC Hero Fb discussion http://bit.ly/y59jx and it receives good reviews, and there is a vid review at youtube http://bit.ly/WMO85

Actually i applaud the fact that HTC developed the Rosie UI for HTC Hero, but the Magic comes with the bare essentials. It would be no different then my G1, other then a bigger RAM?

Google themselves are leading the development of the OS, and it's based on a lot of input for the community.

That being said, i am not blaming HTC rather i am scrutinizing SIS role in all this, they could be the very one jacking up the price since they are the only one bringing it in. I mean when i ask how come celcom is able to produce theirs at 1499 they say that's because theirs come with all the google app. Which is true, but since when did google charge anyone for their app?

I mean if we take a look at Ebay prices, they are letting it go at the mark of RM 1200 to RM 1800 after conversion. It just saddens me in this regard, i mean when i had the palm, the price was way over our neighbours down south, and having the same experience with a free OS, leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I called SIS Distribution just now, and they told me that HTC Hero is ready for purchase! They shipped stocks to shops this morning and by afternoon the phone will be available to us, well probably tomorrow (to allow shops to sort their stocks).

Hi guys. Am a total noob to Android.
Would appreciate if anyone here can help
clarify the Android Market restriction.
If I get a UK set. Am I still restricted
in accessing the Android Market place?
When they say restriction, does it
include Free Apps or just Paid Apps?
Thanks ....

Hey guys I too am looking to get this phone if my budget permits..

Tested it out at DM priced around RM2400.

The thing I do hope they improve is the auto focus for the camera function.
What exactly do I mean ? Say u wanna take a pic of a bottle on the table. The only way is to aim the camera to the center and press the capture button. There is no auto-focus then continue to take the pic. Sorta like a camera half press function then u get what I mean.

Pic quality looks good on the screen but will need to extract it out on a PC to really know for sure.

ElmI, I then called Action KLCC, and they said next week (Mon/Tue) I'll go to Lowyat Plaza this noon to buy a case. If NA, I'll probably source FlexiShield from ebay.

Evirober, where is DM? Digital Mall?

About the camera, does Hero has the 'touch to focus' feature like the iPhone? With iPhone you can choose what to focus by touching it on the screen.

The price is RM2399 SIS warranty, paid the deposit RM50 and tomorrow I'll collect during lunch hour :-)

I saw several Hero boxes wrapped with deposit papers, and I was the 8th. Hoho.

If time permit I'll do some photo ops later when unboxing :-)

ElmI, nope. My plan is to buy a slightly bigger screen protector (I have Capdase iPhone anti-fingerprint screen protector in mind - bought & applied it previously on my mum's iPhone 3GS. It feels very nice to slide on it) and cut it according to Hero's screen. Unless I can find a Hero specific screen protector tomorrow.

Case, I'm going to buy a FlexiShield. Source it from ebay. In the mean time, I think I'll wrap it with thin wrapper (my office use it for DHL) just to keep nasty tiny hard scratchy dirts from touching my Hero.

Kindly update us when you find Hero specific accessories :-)

k8118k, no problem boss. I'm looking forward to deal you in the future :-)

@Levi congrats on the phone can't wait for the review i wish i can get one too.

Hmm at rm 2399 its weird that they wont be reducing magic price,

Btw I think we should have a proper sub forum in regards to android if the user base keeps increasing?

To whoever ask about the market, it doesn't matter where you get your hp from the mmarket will be a local one. However there is an app call market enabler for download which allows you to choose your market I have set mine to us market sinnce last fm can't be found in the local market. If you want to buy app get a google checkout account.

havent done any updatin on the rom... but it's not laggy at all to my surprise. it's comparable to an iphone. it makes me wonder whether it comes with the new firmware, but i just checked the firmware and it's 1.5.
the guy said there's no need for screen protector cuz he said the screen is scratch resistant, but i doubt that anyway since i never read it anywhere on the internet that says the screen is scratch resistant.
no pouch or screen protector are included, only a 2gb micro sd is included.

Added on September 16, 2009, 12:31 amoh! and yes hero has touch focus, just tap where you wanna focus and hold it for a moment and then it'll snap. there's no need to use the stupid track ball.

Well I guess the lagging is obvious only when you setup many widgets across the 7 scenes :-)

Oh what is the class of the supplied 2GB? Class 4 or 6?

Edit: Eh have you tested syncing contacts with Outlook? And how about downloading emails from office's email system (Outlook)?

No problem, but the market enabler is not found in the market, the classiest thing about Android is that it allows you to install 3rd party app, without the need to jailbreak.

2 3rd party app you should consider is, Market enabler and Wifi tether.

Market enbler
Wifi tether

Enjoy your android experience.

The latest UK HTC Hero update is now available. http://tinyurl.com/kj98qt

I read that it will make rooting the phone difficult. Are you currently using the latest ROM? Would you be able to advice noobs like me on which is the best and simplest tutorial to root the Hero? This is all so new and exciting ... but a little guidance will be greatly appreciated. I've read up on Modaco, and then of coz, the TheUnlockr .... not sure which is the simplest.

I'll be getting my phone only in 1st week of Oct. So, doing a lot of reading now.

*
Hmm i am not using Hero, so i won't be much use.

Hopefully, others here can help you.

Apperently, there is a guide to gain back the root from that update.

Link

After following those steps you can follow the root tutorial back to gain root.

But i would say don't worry usually there will always be some one out there cracking new ways to gain root.

ps360,

What's the difference between leaked Nordic RUU update with the UK? Or between UK RUU with SEA RUU?

Are you sure the rooting is going to be more difficult after the latest RUU update? Any source on that?

Well, I'm on theunlokr side :-) The steps involved are fewer than the other, and come with video tutorial. You just tap the menus instead of typing the codes.

There's already a WWE version of it, so i won't worry.

Root would be more difficult in the sense that the update doesn't allow HBOOT. But there is a method around that as of now, it's in the link i gave above.

I have no hero so i am not interested much in it's development =(

hey, take a look at the touchHD(blackstone), it has almost the same specs as the hero, TouchHD have a bigger screen but a cheaper resistive touch screen but the hero has a more expensive capacitive screen yet hero only sells for 2.2 - 2.3K retail yet HD sells for 3.2K retail.

Now I wonder which HTC model has the same screen size as HTC Hero. I just came back from LYP and I can't find any that suits HTC Hero.

Magic is much more smaller compared to Hero :-(

With no casing, no screen protector it really makes me nervous XD

Until then, I'll probably wrap it with thin plastic wrapper.

On the other note, the HTC Hero comes with 1 year warranty. You might add another RM50 for an extended 1 year warranty, which then give you two years warranty.

i just googled whether the screen is scratch resistant, and i found that someone in xda wrote that the hero screen is made 'gorrilla glass', the same as the iphone's.

Oh what is the class of the supplied 2GB? Class 4 or 6?

Edit: Eh have you tested syncing contacts with Outlook? And how about downloading emails from office's email system (Outlook)?
*
i didnt sync with exchange, so i cant comment on that... but it syncs with bliss with google services.

Hi, I am new to this. So I do not know what's the difference between the Nordic and UK other than language? Anyway, great to see some love for this phone. The iPhone is really becoming a tom-d***-and-harry phone. Too many people using it. There is no application named Android Market or Market in my Hero. Only SAM. Confirmed no Market in Hero Malaysia/Vietnam, read http://bit.ly/3cF83h

Edit: It seems that there is build 2.73.1100.5, from Belgium. Nice to know there are many builds to keep us occupied :-)

Sigh...slideME app is quit useless as there are only a few which are free. Besides the free one not so atractive sad.gif

It seems that we need to flash to others firmware to enjoy andriod market hmm.gif

Anybody know how to backup contact groups which are made in People? I did a reset consequently the groups were deleted.

I did backup (use Windows Contact, not Outlook) however the backup didn't carry together the groups :-(

Will Outlook backups the groups too?

flashing is not permanent, it is not modifying the baseband, therefore it is not detectable when u reflash to normal rom. Just flash.

I can't tell either it was laggy or not because the lag issue is most probably on 1.76.405.6, and our Malaysian Hero comes with 2.73.728.5. So I have no experience on the lag issue, so cannot compare.

From xda, the latest International update is 2.73.405.5 and solved that issue, which is older than ours. Assuming our update is built based on previous codes, I'd say the lag is not there anymore :-)

Hi Guys,

Been using Hero AP set for the past 1 week. Now upgraded to latest official EU update available > 2.73.405.5 which barely took no more than 5 mins.

The performance effect is *very* extreme, no more sluggish feel compared to with old out-of-the-box 1.7.x.x ROM.

Btw, my set doesn't have APN settings for all Malaysian telco. Appreciate if those having local sets could share with me the APN settings for Maxis and also Celcom. Rite now, i manage to configure 3G for internet, still cannot MMS.

FINALLY!

Now I have Android Market in my Hero after following this bit.ly/TVoUL exactly.

No problem at all. It's a smooth sailing for me. Now time to go to Market getting some groceries XD

Edit: Now I have my Hero exactly as I wanted. With Market :-) Just downloaded Linda.

Interestingly enough, my Hero is much more responsive now. I'd say the 2.73.405.5 update is so much faster compared to our update. SERIOUSLY.

You can get you settings (WAP, 3G and Internet) from here.

Hi owners of htc Hero... i am thinking of getting the htc hero but i am kinda like a person who can't live without a gps system in a phone.. big question for those of you who already own hero..

how is the gps support like? is there any software on it now that you guys are able to run true gps? u know like mapking where it doesn't require broadband and tracks and teach you to make everyturn depending where u are at?

Regarding warranty, you may want to ask SIS directly. The phone no is 03-5569 8878 :-)

About the map, Idk for sure as I personally don't fancy using GPS. Google Maps is good enough for me, and don't see myself installing any of those heavy weight GPS software :-)

ya..can it run garmin map? or specially malfreemap format?

also, if we install the ROM from XDA forum, will it void the warranty??
*
i think what you need is papago X5 is a better alternative since the maps from malsingmaps are the most updated and free.
What is the cheapest set available currently, i don't care about warranty.

Levi, did u flashed ur unit to use 2.73.405.5 ?

Yes sir ah ha sir! I flashed my 2-year SIS warranty Hero with

update-hero-generic-2.73.405.5-signed

The update is available from xda :-)

I don't think I can stand with SlideME SAM for two years. Market is too awesome to miss.

Simple, if you are a power user (hacking, rooting, jailbreaking) go for hero, if you are just a normal user, choose the iphone.

I'd like to retract my previous statement regarding syncing contacts' groups. I previously said that syncing using HTC Sync won't import contacts' groups, which is turned to be false.

HTC Sync (using MS Outlook) DO syncs contacts' groups.

Got this before Raya. It was an easy choice between WM and Android, and I'm not subjecting myself to the misery of WM anymore. ROM flashed to the MoDaCo version 2.2 "enhanced", and together with the "Market Enabler" I'm able to purchase "Jewellust" and "Advanced Task Manager" as well as download tons of free apps from the Android Market. I was half-expecting the stuttery crappiness of the Touch Pro, but was pleasantly surprised to see how smooth the swipe, flick and other multitouch interface aspect of it. The app selections are pretty much subdued and paltry compared to the iTunes AppStore, but I'm sure it will grow.

This is definitely a keeper. Will use it alongside my 32GB iPhone 3G[S], now just need to wait for normal working days to start after this holiday to subscribe to service provider for wireless broadband. The device is dead without it. Probably will choose Maxis Prepaid Broadband.

My last WM device was years back with the Atom XDA. Never going back to that pile of feces ever again. My contacts were transferred from my Mac, sync into the cloud to MobileMe and Google Contacts, and synced back to Hero wirelessly through the Google single sign-in login.

Yep. You need to setup the APN manually once you flash your Hero with WWE ROM. For Maxis user, checkout the link provided above :-)

If you want to access paid apps, use Market Enabler. But maek sure you have root access, else it won't work.

Well, how to disable Market auto download? I downloaded several apps, and decided not to use them anymore.

However, the apps will download themselves automatically after I wipe my Hero. How to stop them/disable that?

It doesn't occur like that, if you download an app recently and then wipe, when you sync it back it will download back the app recently install. I am not sure what the definition of recently means, but usually within a one day span for me. Why do you wipe to remove the app? try uninstalling?

I wipe because I have this Window's anal of reformating after do some mess (install, uninstall stuff, mod this and that) Haha.

Yar I think Market will auto-redownload recently installed apps. For that I think I shouldn't download apps before I do wipe.

I don't think it's 24 hrs though. In my case it's much more shorter than 1 day. And I think Market wil redownload up to certain no of apps only.

UPDATE 1: SOURCE

Twitter's phenomenal growth means that people are posting updates to the service faster than ever. Earlier in the year, the number of tweets posted to the service hit a wall: more specifically the number 2147483647 which was the maximum size of an integer in a fair few programming languages.

Tomorrow morning, however, Twitter will be forcing through Twitpocalypse II where the number of tweets pushes past the unsigned integer limit of 4294967296. And that may cause issues for unprepared Twitter applications.

In a mailing to the Twitter API developers list, the Twitter API team have reminded developers that their applications need to cope with numbers of this size - and if you're wondering why your favourite mashup isn't working after 11:30am Pacific Time tomorrow, this may well be the culprit.

UPDATE 2: SOURCE

It's great having lots of manufacturer provided applications in the ROM of your mobile device, but what happens if one of them breaks? It's not as easy as just contacting the developer for an updated version is it!

This is exactly the problem being faced by users of 'HTC Peep', the Twitter client on the HTC Hero.

Last night, the unique id number assigned to each Tweet exceeded 4,294,967,295, in an event we covered as 'Twitpocalyse II'. This is the highest number that can be stored in an unsigned 32 bit integer. If the developer of a Twitter client uses this method to store the Tweet ID, then unexpected things will happen. Hence, since this occured, Peep users have been unable to use the application, instead being greeted by the error message above (after which the application either closes or refuses to load new tweets).

We have contacted HTC to ask how long Hero users should expect to wait for a fix, but if you are affected, it might be time to try out Twidroid, Twitterride or perhaps Swift!

I am not :-)

I use GLAD food wrap to temporarily protect my Hero. New phone indeed makes me nervous lol.

I wrap, unwrap and re-wrap on daily basis. Idk the effect of plastic wrapping on the phone. I think there is nothing to worry about. I can hear the rings and everything. Ok lah I guess. Only when recharge the battery then I need to open a bit to plug the charger.

Finger operations are ok too. Touch screen registers my commands well enough.

But yeah my Hero is gawd damn ugly with the wrapping.

I personally never like white, especially on things I fondle a lot.

I read from various sources, stating that white Hero picked color marking from it's casing. You slide into red casing, you get red marks on your Hero. If your casing is green, you get green on your Hero.

On the other note, I found out that every time I want to add contact, Hero will automatically direct the input to number box first, instead of name. I think that's a nice touch especially when you are in hurry, as the number is more important than the name.

Edit:

vexus, you want 16GB free of charge ah? 16GB is too much la to ask for free.

lek_e30, local for the time being only two colors. White and brown. Oversea you can get pink also if I'm not mistaken.

Good for you :-) Later don't forget to come here. We can always share anything regarding Hero :-)

Edit: And where is TS ha? He posted once, and never some back ah?

Anyway, I'd like to share a step-by-step guide flashing Hero (especially local set with no Market), taken from xda.

OK. I specifically picked this.

1. Install OI File Manager.

2. Put the flashrec into your sdcard.

3. Put this ROM into you sdcard. You may want to rename it to update.zip before you transfer it to sdcard.

4. Put this recovery image into your sdcard.

5. With the file manager, browse your sdcard and install flashrec.

6. If you haven't done it, rename update-hero-generic-2.73.405.5-rooted-signed.zip to update.zip with the file manager.

7. Open flashrec, click backup (the last button of the program). Wait.

8. At the box, type sdcard/Recovery-RA-HERO-v1.2.2.img, then click the button just below the box. Wait.

9. Now you flashed your Hero with recovery image. Turn off your Hero.

10. Hold POWER and HOME simultaneously. You will enter Android system recovery.

11. Choose Wipe data/factory reset. I ASSUME YOU ALREADY MADE YOUR BACKUP. Else, choose Reboot system now and do your backup.

12. After wipe, choose Apply sdcard:update.zip. Wait.

13. Choose Reboot system now.

14. Smile as your Hero is rooted. Watch it boots and gives you the Market :-)

Haha please no. Last time I was the replacement TS for W610i thread, also a TO from an idle TS. Then the thread go unmaintained :-(

I support a new, active TS and I am more than happy to contribute and to help TS as practical as I can :-)

Edit: I emailed SIS last week asking about the status of the warranty when flashing the Hero with another ROM. The e-mail is still unanswered. Or is there any fine print pertaining this matter somewhere?

Ok so I called them (damn hard to connect to the tech dept. And the recorded machine voice also sounds unprofessional lol).

Flashing voids the warranty. Basically that's it lah. Then they talked about SPL (?) and all (I don't know what is SPL or whatnot). They said as long as the SPL is intact, the warranty is there.

In other word, as long as HTC cannot detect any mod (software/hardware) made to the Hero, then the warranty is there.

Jiahaha so basically my Hero has no warranty already. Oh my... How to check this SPL thing ha? I burned the warranty on the 2nd day. Meh then no point I paid RM50 extra for extended warranty XD~

That's what I told them :-)

I said if I can flash it to any custom ROM, I most probably can also re-flash it to the original ROM. That's why I said, as long as HTC can't detect any mod made, your warranty is good :-) In fact the guy I talked to agreed with me.

Whether this SPL thing can be restored or not, that I don't know yet.

For those who are using a rooted Hero, can any of you confirm if you are experiencing these 2 weird behavior?

1. During a call, you press the Volume Rocker on the side, but the call volume is still SUPER LOUD. Unlike the iPhone, when you're in a call, pressing the Volume button reduces or increases the call volume (not ringtone)

2. Using the retro clock with weather widget - the weather doesn't update. I have a Moon at 2pm in the afternoon. Bringing up the weather widget, everything seems fine. Weather and temp updates with a Sun instead of a Moon. Going back to the Homescreen again, the Moon is still there. Weather not updated.

Thanks

Added on September 24, 2009, 6:53 pmAnd can someone upload the ORIGINAL ROM that came with the phone?
Forgot to do a back-up before rooting my unit.
Now that Levi mentioned SIS's tight A** policy ...
Would be good if somehow, can roll back if anything happens
Thanks again ....

Added on September 24, 2009, 6:56 pmCome to think of it, am kinda pissed with SIS ...

There is a chinese IME in the market you just have to look for it.

Actually i approached one of the mod, and ask if Android can be a forum by itself, and different threads on the each phone as well as thread common to android in general. It's hard to keep up like this when Hero, Magic and G1 can be using all the same roms.

Just to scare you a little bit, your rooting esstially flashes the original SPL with a modded one.HOWEVER, it will be replace with the original one by flashing the original roms, and it does take the root access away from you.

About the SPL thing, I flashed my wm6 with a modded spl aka hardspl but reflash it to the original one just before sending it for warranty, and no, they can't detect that ethier.

Downloaded, but any tips on how to UNROOT the unit?
I searched XDA but only found people asking that question and kena shot asking him to SEARCH before asking.
But can't find an actual thread with steps to Un-root.
Any help will be appreciated.

Idk who and why local Hero replaces Market with SAM. All my current apps are not available from SAM. If I remember correctly, SAM don't even have any file manager app.

Maybe SAM got ASTRO but imho ASTRO is ugly. Hate the UI. I currently use ES File Manager. The most nice UI I found in Market for a file manager.

Edit: I wonder if I can buy apps with CIMB Petronas Credit Card.

I generally dont need to sync anything using my Mac. All the details needed to sync resides in the coud, and with the integrations between Address Book--Google Contact and iCal--Google Calendar, they exchange information between themselves and the Hero syncs back the data to itself from the cloud.

The only other usage of the HTC Sync program is application installation, but once you've rooted the Hero and enabled Android Market, you can easily install and file manager app, and run the .apk installation file from there. I'm using Linda File Manager myself.

In the age where Google handles pretty much all my data synchronization need, the HTC Sync program is pretty much redundant. Furthermore, on my Windoze laptop, it memory-hogs the system to the point that the laptop crawls.

I asked if anyone having problems controlling the in-call volume during a call. I finally found the solution and what was causing it.

It wasn’t the ROM’s fault that I couldn’t control the call volume during a call. It was my own doing. Under Menu, Settings, Ringer Volume – if you select Use Incoming Call Volume For Notifications, you’ll be able to control the in-call volume by pressing the Volume Rocker on the phone.

So now, apart from Peep "force quit" problem - which HTC is working with Twitter for a solution, I've only got one more issue left to resolve on my Hero. The weather widget which doesn't update (on the homescreen, clock). Day time showing moon, night time showing sun. Sometimes it updates, most of the time it doesn't. Anyone else having this problem?

Note: Mac user here too. Don't use HTC Sync either. Google all the way.

Probably due to its location. Go to Settings and under the "Location" drop down, make sure both entries("Use wireless network" and "Use GPS satellite") are checked. I also have the "Date & Time" setting, and under "Automatic" not checked, which in itself says it uses the network-provided values. To me ,this is network specific, and seeing how the massive problem with our telcos these days, I'd rather have the phone internals figure it out. I never had any problems from Day 1. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised that that weather widget changes even according to the specific area I am in. For example, it is now showing "Ampang" as "Intermittent Cloud" and while I was at work in KLIA 3 days back, it changes to "KLIA" by itself.

By the way, on that picture, that representation is correct. It shows "10:34pm" so it should be showing the moon.

Yeah, that photo was taken during those "sometimes it updates" moment. Lazy to snap another photo and upload showing the problematic screens. My location changes too, only the sun and moon visual stay unchanged at times. Sometimes, tapping it and going into the weather widget itself, clicking update, will do the trick. But success rate is only 2 out of 10 times. Anyway, its no big deal. Just bugs me not able to get the phone working in the way it should.

Dear all, I am currently noob with all things with Android and Hero. However currently I am doing on my own reading abt this handset, and possibly I may go for this as replacement of my P1i. Speaking of rooting the firmware from the local SIS sets to other ROMS in order to access the Apps Market, I believe it also cause the handset to lose chinese support. I was going through this posting, maybe this firmware Vers 2.73.751.4 may help? link:android.modaco.com/content/htc-hero-hero-modaco-com/291942/03-09-hero-roms-radios-in-update-zip-format/

If you do care about your Hero, DO NOT put any Micro SDHC card Class 2 in it. I suspect that 16GB card given with the package is Class 2, because that is the only available card when I went looking in Lowyat Plaza. Access and read/write speed is horrible, and this will affect the experience and your applications running later. Some may even run erratic or simply refuse to run.

Enjoy your Hero mate :-)

Paid apps are still inaccessible for me :-( However I already bought my first paid app with PayPal. Luckily the author use PayPal for the full license instead of Checkout.

I bought a lifetime license of EasyMoney for 4.99USD. 5* app :-)

Welcome to the club mate :-) As our stringfellow said, you may want to check the class of that 16GB. I personally went to LYP to procure a Class 6 16GB, ended up with only 8GB Class 6.

LYP people said there is no such thing as Class 6 16GB. I said I have it. In my ass. Bah!

I'll personally will avoid anything slower than Class 6. Class 2 will only bring your Hero to its knee :-( I know as I used to have 8GB Class 2 in my G9, and the camera turned lethargic like a slow-moving arboreal mammals of South America.

Avoid it.

Bought lots of apps through Android Market already. Ultimate Doom, Linda File Manager and Jewellust are most recommended. I am especially impressed with the built-in A-GPS on this, it is even better than my iPhone 3G[S], picking up signal even while I'm inside the house. Not possible previously with the iPhone. Using this together with NDrive and CoPilot Live 8 is a joy, but map accuracies are way off since maps for both apps are supplied by TeleAtlas, and last updated in 2007 IIANM.

However, I'm still sticking with the iPhone because of the unavailability of certain apps that I use for work. Particularly the app called ForeFlight. I need that for work, and Foreflight on the iPhone is an indispensible tool for me to get prepared for flight duties.

I hardly use the entertainment side of Hero, all my MP3s are tagged to work proper on the iPhone, transferring them over to the Hero results in me having to retag and embed album artwork back into them, and tagging thousands of songs is not my idea of fun. Ditto for video as well. However, I am excited to utilise the Footprint app, as its ease of use, complete with tags on Google Maps is a great feature. This will rekindle my love of exploring the places I visit during work, and probably will entice me to revisit the places I've been before.

I'd like to share a way to access your sdcard with your computer's Wi-Fi. I saw the steps from xda-developers forum and I think it's good to share as our reference.

1. Download SwiFTP from Market.
2. Download FileZilla. Get the portable version of it here. No installation required.
3. Run SwiFTP.
4. Setup your username/password at Settings. For example,

Username: a1
Password: a1
Port: 2121
Stay within folder: /sdcard

5. At SwiFTP Server main page, click Enable wifi.
6. Click Start. Observe the status

Server status: Running
Server URL: ftp://192.168.1.130:2121/
Wifi status: Enabled

7. Run FileZilla. Fill in the details and click Quickconnect.

user posted image

You should have your /sdcard by now :-) Now go and test upload some files.

This steps are based on this. Thanks to him for the idea.

Levi, I just bought my HERO last saturday and plan to flash WWE rom as per your instruction so that I can access to android market. I'm sure you might do some back up earlier. What type of app u used for back up? Is it NANDROID? I downloaded Nandroid but dont understand how to use it. I'm new to android. Do you know how to use nandroid? What should I do? install it on PC or phone? if phone, why no *.apk in it?

I found this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=459830 but dont know how to install.... Please advice.

Is it true that eventhough after flash to WWE rom and you can only access to free app only? Any idea why?

Many thanks!

@Levi: thanks for the tutorial man. Very helpful biggrin.gif

@artic: i recommend u use Amon Ra’s Hero Recovery Image coz its very easy to backup ur phone. its got Nandroid v2.2 backup and restore in it. Details on how to root ur hero can be found here.

Yes, after u have loaded a new ROM with market in it, u can only access the free apps. You need to install Market enabler to gain access to the paid apps. the apk can be found here.

Does it mean that with Nandroid V2.2, we can re-load the ori ROM just like the step in loading the custom ROM, in case we want to send in for warranty claim?

Yep. I personally use Amon Ra's Recovery Image as pointed by ElmI. Use Flashrec to flash the recovery image and turn off your Hero. Reboot your Hero by holding Power and Home button.

At the Android System Recovery, scroll and click Nandroid backup. The resultant backup files/images will be available in your sdcard. Transfer them to your computer for safe keeping :-)

About Market, use Market Enabler to access paid apps. I myself don't use credit card, so I can't comment much on purchasing paid apps. However, I bought a full license of a trial app, EasyMoney via PayPal :-)

Yes you can put the Ori rom, but your recovery image and SPL will still be the modified version.

Been using MoDaCo custom ROM v2.3 for few days, what i can say is that its not as smooth as our stock firmware. Feel quit sluggish n slow when opening apps. Google map also not included.

Right now using previous MoDaCo v2.2 enhanced. Man, its fast n smooth...i like it biggrin.gif

Hi, I new comer to join this big Hero family. Just bought my Hero last Sunday at LYP cost me Rm2299. Just now i flashed my Hero to this ROM update-hero-generic-2.73.751.4-signed with Chinese support and of cause android market thumbup.gif . (Ps. Wanna said thanks to Levi share how to flash hero notworthy.gif )

I got some question :
1:) Do u guy feel sluggish after flash to this ROM update-hero-generic-2.73.751.4-signed? I felt Malaysia ori ROM is much smoother then this ROM update-hero-generic-2.73.751.4-signed.

2:) And i can't save new contact....Don't know what happen?? Do anyone experience this?

Hi there, welcome to the Hero's lair tongue.gif

Personally i haven't try the 2.73.751 ROM yet but have tried Modaco Custom v2.3 (which i suspect using generic-2.73.751.4 coz it have the new people widget same as the generic-2.73.751.4), it also feel sluggish and slow when compare to Malaysia's ROM. Right now im using Modaco Custom v2.2 and it's smooth and fast.

I think for now, the best choice for Hero ROMs are 2.73.405.5 and Modaco Custom v2.2 as both are smooth, fast and also come with android market biggrin.gif

P/s: MCR 2.4 with new underpinnings coming soon. (Dunno what is underpinnings tho tongue.gif )

sluggish is 1 thing.....is critical part is can't add new contact. Anyway i had flashed to another new ROM (modaco-custom-rom v2.3 with chinese core) which much faster and so far didn't sense any bug yet. I read ur previous post said modaco custom rom v2.2 is fast. I try to search but can't get it. I wonder modaco v2.2 ROM and 2.73.405.5 ROM are they support chinese??

Ahh..sorry i cant help u on that coz for contact i use Google contact service. All my contacts will be dloaded n sync automatically when i connect to the internet.

Hurm..maybe u can try changing the contact type (either Google, Phone or Sim) when u save ur contact and see whether it is on ur contact list or not..

If still cant...i dunno lo..maybe its time to use other ROM tongue.gif

There are some flashes that it can play and some that cannot. It's not a full featured flash, it more akin to flash lite. So some flashes especially like those of embeded radio players might not be able to play. Flash ads are mostly fine =(

Hi Hero owner. Do your hero come with the compass app? I can't seem to find it.
*
it doesnt, its integrated in google map.. when ur using street view..
best compass program i found was marine compass.. its full 3D

on the side note:
i got tips for white HTC HERO owner..
i already been using near 1 week
i notice that there's a few blotches of very stubborn stain on the taflon cover
no matter how hard i try to rub it off with water, soap etc.. its not coming out completely..
still noticable mark on the taflon..
until i start using alcohol to rub it... to my surprise now it looks like new out-of-the-box clean..
and u just need to gently rub it off.. 100% clean..
super! now im loving the taflon even more.

Welcome to the club naTTan haha XD

Ahh the casing and screen protector. I'm still using food wrapper for the time being.

Tomorrow after office I'm going to LYP to apply Capdase Anti-Fingerprint screen protector. Should be available tomorrow from Cycom Apple (I asked them to source it last two weeks)

Casing is a black FlexiShield. Bought from ebay and the ETA is anyday next week.

I bought two apps already :-) EasyMoney and Sygic Mobile Map.

We should join and try Waze though. Open and free, turn GPS.

Hey Levi, i saw a post on xda-developers on you (Geochelone) advising how to enable to Android Market. You did mention that before flashing it a backup must be made. What software you recommend to backup with? Have you tried MyBackupPro?

Also, my current phone details are as follow:
Firware Version 1.5

Baseband Version 63.18.55.06EU_6.35.06.18

Kernel Version 2.6.27

Build Number 2.73.728.5

Software Version 1.0.0.A6288

Based on your post on xda-developers, would that backup be better than what i have above? Besides enabling Android Market, how about speed wise? The current one i have above is all good except that there are not many applications available. Please advise and thank you in advance.

I tested this app...for normal use (call, sms, and gmail) at least can stay for 2.5 days.

i got 1 question, sometime i sms someone. i will received 1 alert msg, said the receiver unable to receive my msg.

I installed Power Manager, but the ads spoil the feel. And by quick glance the settings are pretty extensive. I was overwhelmed on my first visit to the settings lol.

The trial lasts for 30 days isn't? Or if I'm not mistaken for our Market (no access to paid apps) the app has no expiry date but comes with ads instead.

From its official website, http://www.xphonesoftware.com/pm.html#FAQ

What are the terms of the trial version? The terms are different depending on the country you are located in:
1. In countries were paid apps are supported the trial version has the profiles locked and the number of initial profiles has been reduced
2. In countries were paid apps are not supported, it is a fully functioning application that is supported by advertising. NOTE: the application will expire once a month and needs to be updated.

So if you are running Power Manager with ads, basically that's a full program, except that it'll expires every month and with ads of course :-) I don't know if uninstalling - reinstalling the software will reset the 30-day trial or not.

nyquil, sorry I missed your post :-(

You should backup with Nandroid when dealing with flashing and stuff. I found that MyBackup Pro doesn't fit my needs.

The only reason I flashed is the Market. I don't really care about the speed as I use original ROM for only two days :-) I don't really know the difference.

Nice sig.

I think we should request a subforum for android. And we should organiza the thread a bit by putting some relevent info up front such as users of the phone or OS and rooting method and tips and tricks.

I am using the generic rom with herp and wish i can have a2sd without flashing modacp rom. This is just like g1 all over again. Lol.

Yeah if you can consider it, i would be mighty please. As of now i am holding it in a pouch.

Will you be putting the HTC with flexishield in a pouch also? Or are you confident lugging it around with the flexishield alone?

I was thinking of getting an invisbleshield instead with a nice protective cover if you can't spare the flexishield. But i never tested this invisbleshield before so won't know how good is it on the screen. Anyone have any ideas?

This looks classy, but too rich for my skin i guess. Haha

I use IS on my NDSL. And I'd say it's pretty good. However, the skin/screen protector tends to catch dust. You'll end up with white-ish dust at its edges.

My last phone I put a screen protector, a silicone and I put it in a pouch. Well I guess I'll put my Hero in a pouch too :-) Maybe in a soft cloth pouch.

The one with Android logo is very nice.

Yeah cause i flash the generic rom not modaco, it seems fast enough and without any lag, and not as innovative as Cyanogen to make the jump. But i wanted to incorporate APP2SD on it, hence was wondering if you can adb shell, i email modaco to ask the specific, haven't got a reply yet.

Same here. I tested MoDaCo but the difference is not that significant compared to generic rom.

Idk app2sd's advantages over normal apps' installation, especially when Hero's storage is much bigger compared to G1's.

If you do app2sd, kindly share us the newby-friendly step by step guide to do that. I'd love to try that on my Hero.

Running 2.73.405.5 generic EU rom. Top notch performance for the past 2 weeks. I am on 3G/HSDPA most of the time, making average 2 hours call, less than 30 SMSes and 50 MB average data transfer daily for emails/browsing. The batt need to be charged full, daily at nights.. in order to survive the next day.

The only thing kept me looking into modaco's rom is Market Enabler and Business Card Scanner.

Does the Business Card Scanner really works? Any other alternative?

I am two clicks away to Modaco 2.2 / 2.3.

--
Update

For those on generic and dont want to switch ROM's, just use BizCardReader.apk posted here or here.

It works like a charm, an even recognizes chinese chars.

So, sticking to generic rom for me, at least for another couple of months. Q4 always been the busiest time ever. Dont wanna mess up my hero.

You don't have to be on the modaco rom for what you want. I run market enabler as well. All you have to is get the apk.

1. Once u get it force kill your market with task manager.

2. Then clear the market cache.

3. Apply the market you want from the market enabler.

4. Reboot the phone and just for safety apply the market enabler again.

5. Open your market u should have paid app now.

For back up use nandroid or mybackup pro. Nandroid is better because it is a mirror image of your phone.

Yep. Cannot fake as you don't have the root access.

You may want to use the pre-rooted generic ROM if you don't know how to root yourself.

Market Enabler Dependencies:

1. Working su command (implies that the phone has to be rooted)
2. Busybox binaries (or just the grep command working).

For those who dun want to use custom ROM, you can still gain root access using pre-rooted generic ROM. Here's the link for rooted generic hero ROM 2.73.405.5

Oh just get it at any computer shop, the mini usb might look different a bit with 2 sides bent rather then the original, but trust me it will fit.

I think that hero is my next phone but I wondering if it is worth to buy it now or later cuz i am not really rushing. Does anyone think that there will be promotions (free stuff or cheaper price) down the line between now and november?

I have a similar question as above too~ is there any news of similar newer phones to be coming out?
if not, i'm getting one on mid nov or december

Anyway, my main question is, is the music quality nice for Hero?
Reading from some user reviews, it is said tat the stock ear phones aint good enuf...
has anyone tried it with 3rd party aftermarket head/earphones?

regards.

there is a rumor that the next phone is called htc dragron with the snapdragon chipset which is way way faster than the current one but i think you will have to wait for another year to use it...

Oh my... The wanting waiting game :-)

Regarding earphone, I'd pair my Hero with Senn PX100, Koss KSC75 or AKG K26P. Most probably with K26P. PX100 and 75 are open and being open they are terrible for traveling :-)

Oh follow this tips if you want to exclude certain folders from being included in album/music app, http://is.gd/40Ja2. Just make sure you create the .nomedia file from start menu instead of context menu. It won't work if you create it from Right Click > New > Text Document.

Hmm rather then playing the waiting game, why don't you see if the current phone will suit your need ?

There is a bunch of HP going to come out, possibly to make up the xmas shopping list.

There is motorola shole/tao, T-mobile Pulse? And Samsung Android phones?

I straight away got my Hero because they updated the patch to root it, and i really like to have root.

That being said, Samsung screen is freaking nice with the OLED, motorola has a nice UI with Blur and integrated social networkingplus it has a hardware keyboard, pulse has a poorer camera with 3.2 but the UI seems cool as well. Read some review/preview of motorola sholes and/or pulse, make sure all have a 3.5 mm headphone jack, not all comes with a flash for the camera and other then that the i don't think i can advice you anymore.

Another point to consider is that, if you have root nothing is impossible, i am kind of sad i lost most of the dev support in g1 since they are still cooking roms like mad, they have ported blur already and trying to port pulse.

HTC Tatto will launch first follow by Dragon i guess...Tatto is the entry level with resistive screen.

Dragon will be very expensive seeing the spec, probably around RM3k.

those with budget probably can wait for Magic as the SenseUI will come real soon...but no 3.5mm jack..too bad sad.gif

Actually there's no difference, like i said, i think SIS is being an ass. HTC is practically giving the phone out in the UK, but here it's just as expensive.

Unless Maxis came out with their own Hero promotion, Celcom here I am.

Kudos to HTC for making Hero as it is. I for one was looking/waiting for Palm-Pre, until I saw Hero. Android as it were, was not in my radar.

Sense-UI is awesome. So awesome that they port it to HTC HD2.

any of you sync your contact (people) with outlook 2007? any issue?

I've a lot of issue:
1. some of my contact goes missing in outlook. now my phone got 329 contacts but outlook only got 276 only. Tried using the repair function in sync manager but same.

2. some of the content in contact missing. eg work address. my contact address only few words in the phone.

3. part of the contact info transfer to another contact like birthday, email address.

Added on October 7, 2009, 3:22 pmyou guys have no issue / problem with hero?

my experiences:
1. day, all my contact go missing including my card (first in the people).

2. bluetooth handsfree - after paired and use, when turn off the bluetooth headset, the phone bluetooth icon still show connected. when check bluetooth setting, it show connecting...

Added on October 7, 2009, 3:38 pmwhy i think android is not ready
1. no Tasks / To Do application

2. no Notepad or Notepad not accessable / sync via PC

3. calculator so basic that it doesn't have '%'

4. no file explorer

5. 2 contact database in 'people' - google's contact & phone's contact
google's contact only sync with google, phone's contact only sync with PC, phone's contact CANNOT sync / copy / move to google's contact. same goes to google's contact, CANNOT sync / copy / move to phone's contact data.

6. calendar SAME as 'people' - 2 database in calendar - google & pc

Are you using a Rooted rom or normal rom?

Not sure about the Outlook issue, i just use google contacts to sync.

Never had a contact lost issue, always the same.

Can't help with bluetooth, never used it.

Task application can be downloaded, Astrid or remember the mik?

so far gtask is the only one with the ability to sync to google.

A lot of calculator can be downloaded for free.

I use the sim card to cahnge back and forth with an app

I though calender can choose which one can be shown.

after using htc hero for about a week now.. i want to sum up my opinion on this phone..
bare in mind that im iphone user previously so most of the comparison will between this 2..

pros..
HTC Sense UI.. its the single best feature of this phone, 7 homescreens of awesomeness
the best in sense UI is able to select scenes.. different phone for different moods
Integration with online social network, flickr, twitter, facebook.. its easy n cool
love the browser, very easy n effective + flash support
very modern looking exterior, i guess im just a bit bored with how iphone looks likes +fav taflon..
very very customizable.. as compared to iphone.. iphone can become customizable after jailbreaking as well.. just not out of the box.
the setting up email is so easy.. i always have problems using hotmail on iphone..
mutitasking.. this is what apple os on iphone lacks most.. the only thing iphone can multitask is its music player

cons..
poor audio quality through headphone, poor music player from HTC.. iphone's is easily a better music player
poor camera quality. this means more MEGAPIXEL doesnt mean better camera
not as zippy as iphone..
not as many app as itunes but soon it will catch up
games on iphones are better, it also has many gameloft game but in unplayable java format.. sucks!
wallpaper & lockscreen.. image is low res? this is a bit irritating.. but i can live with it

vs iphone
i feel HTC hero is great out of the box and it has great potentials..
but it will be as good as it is now and 2 years later because i am not anticipating much update coming from HTC themselves
its potential will depend solely on the growth of android os itself
as compared to iphone.. i remembered when i was using iphone 1.0 it doesnt even have apps.. and with 3.0 update, its not the same phone anymore..
i am not expecting the level of software update from HTC as they are too busy making HTC tatoo, HTC HD2,, ETC ETC HTC dragon? sweat.gif

apple in the other hand, keep everything too tight to themselves.. c'mon, paying for your ringtone is still a little over the board wont you agree?
not to mention cut-n-paste only seen when 3.0 is released.. cough cough.. message forwarding etc etc u know what i mean
and the OS is not open source, as compared to android as a platform..

About the wallpaper part, get Wallpaper set and save, it saves the wallpaper in it's full form and doesn't lower the image.

I think the wallpaper is not low-res. Maybe you scaled it down.

Try put in one wallpaper into your sdcard. Then choose that wallpaper as your home wallpaper. When selected, there is draggable window to actually determine how big your home wallpaper is. Is you want hi-res, drag the window to the edge.

This is same with lock screen wallpaper.

Hey there fellow Hero owners! I've been an owner for close to 2 weeks now. Anyone of you experiencing the dead/bright pixel issue with the phone like these guys from Singapore? http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/showthre...394322&page=195

To test your phone, simply snap a photo with the camera in pitch darkness (completely covering it works too). Set the display brightness to max and load the black photo fullscreen. Look for bright shimmery star-like dots in the screen, you may need to tilt the phone around to be able to spot them.

I can find 5 of these on my phone, one of which is very obvious. It appears to me they are increasing by the day as I know I had none when I first got the phone.

#UPDATE 13/10/2009 9.19AM
Called up SiS and they asked me to bring the phone in for checking and will 1 to 1 exchange it for me

You use Market or SAM? If SAM most probably the app is not available there. You may want to download IO File Manager instead, as it is available direct downlpad from its official website. Google it.

i have strong feeling that Maxis will not offer android in their phone deal package due to small % of market compare to other OS. Iphone package via maxis is cheap. I don't think maxis gonna offer android to kill it's iphone market.

heroes aboard, mind to share how is the multimedia capabilities? i heard photo shots & MP4 vids were laggy or choppy. Did the new firmware fix these? What about gaming? is it laggy too?

No offence bcoz I might be replacing my iphone 3gs for this & hope it's definitely for the better, not worse. I spend 50-50 between multimedia (games, vids & photos) against business use.

Dun know bout that tho.Since i upgraded to the newest radio, signal become quite unstable. rclxub.gif

Sometimes got full bar, but normally only got 1 or 2 bar. I think the old radio is better. Iirc, it maintain at 3 bar.

I believe someone at said the hero has a larger scale for radio signals, 1 or 2 bars equals to 4 bars on some phones.

android 2.0 update... wondering if theres any good news for HTC hero user ?

new feats:
• The whole system feels much faster, especially the browser. Apparently it renders about as fast as the 3GS's, though part of that could be down to the hardware (What is it, BG?)

• The browser also gets double-tap-to-zoom (some current ROMs already come with this)

• Facebook friends are integrated right into the contacts system

• Voice control has been scattered through the whole system, and even gets its own dedicated dashboard

• There's an upgraded version of Google Maps, with layer support

• Native MS Exchange support

• A unified email inbox, for joining multiple accounts

• A YouTube homescreen widget, which enables two-click uploads

• A "Car Home" app offers larger shortcuts for functions you might need while driving, as well as easy access to voice control

For some reason, Droid has several disadvantages.
1, its not out yet
2, it doesn't have the support like XDA
3, HTC sense just rocks
4, I don't really trust motorola to make goot phones

Get Album art application, it automatically finds album art for your MP3 in the phone, it's a paid software. But you can get it with Market Enabler. Let me get you the cryket link.

Have you rooted your phone? If so does the generic ROM allow swapping?
IMHO swapping was important for G1 because of their small RAM size, but with the Hero you don't get much of that problem

Some apps run in the background still, some are in a save state mode, there is a free app called task panel or task sync which is pretty helpful, just make sure you put the neccesery application in the Ignore list such as HTC sense.

To be honest, the widgets on HTC sense are not optimize, i find then to be memory hoggers compared to the free one in the market, but damn they look beautiful.

Also , cause mine is 1.5Cupcakes , will there be any dealer out there to help upgrade to 1.6?

Thanks

I am using a Matt Material, i actually prefer the grany or some hazy look, makes me feel relief that there is a protector, if you want a clearer one, Digital Mall HTC counter not the shoplot one has a clear CAPCASE brand screen protector for rm 60.

1.6 hasn't been ported to HTC Hero, we are lacking roms now also because we don't have the kernal release for it yet. I am using the normal Android market, EU phones get the normal market only certain countries like us get the SlideME market i think. If you want the normal market you have to root your hp.

What kernal and what is you ROM number if the kernal hasn't been patched you can easily root it with the one click method if not the long guide is out front.

I am using the normal Android market, EU phones get the normal market only certain countries like us get the SlideME market i think. If you want the normal market you have to root your hp.

What kernal and what is you ROM number if the kernal hasn't been patched you can easily root it with the one click method if not the long guide is out front.

RM60?

you can check http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1197068 for a little bit of background and info of Android.
IMO, it's as good as, if not better, than most major OSes now. And it has potential! The coming versions of Android look very promising smile.gif
Do some research and u'll find out more about Android.

Sprint Hero runs on the CDMA network, diff technology than GSM which we are using now. So, i dun think its possible.

GoogleMaps is the pre-installed one. There are many other gps apps that u can used on Hero such as Nav4all (free from android market) and also the paid one such as Ndrive, Sygic Mobile Maps, Co-Pilot and also Papago. Garmin still not available tho if im not mistaken. biggrin.gif

I'm using BeyondPod 1.6.2 as it seemed to be the only RSS reader that could import my OPML feeds from WinMo's Newsbreak.
And it's really smooth scrolling on Beyond Pod.

yes, it'll be great if the web browser could have built-in rss feed support.
in the meantime, i just have to content myself with BeyondPod, which really is a powerful standalone RSS reader.

Hi guys,

Just to share something from MoDaCo forum.

user posted image

This is a cool little phone manager app that works really well with Hero and G1. It's an app that runs a webserver from your phone that you can access over Wifi from any browser on the same network.

Its a mobile phone portal app where basically allow you to view/add media on your phone, view pictures and change wallpaper, view your call log, read and send sms from the browser and more!

You can get more details and download link from here:

Ext USB was borned out of the need to have serial input and compatible with normal miniUSB at the same time. So it is ok to plug in a normal miniUSB cable. For your info Serial inputs are used by phone manufactures to lock/access the processor and baseband directly. The same stuff that is found in iPod Dock connector, Sony Erricson's adapters, nokia's are found as terminals under the battery.

I think the first page could use some updating, but i rather have a new thread talking about software and stuff because it can be used on all phones and not limited to Hero only.

The tips and Q&A are also applicable to all HTC phones in particular now that Magic also gotten sense.

What we need is one thread on Q&A, Tips and Tricks, and if possible a rooting guide, since most phones in Malaysia don't get the google market.

Have you rooted your rom? The guide is upfront.

There is not much choice at the moment, since the kernal has only recently been released.

If you want to d/l a lot of apps, try Modaco rom, or if you want as vanilla as possible get the generic pre rooted rom.

Hi Nattan,

i've done nothing with the hero yet. no market etc.
i'm going through the forum for the rooting.

personally which rom that you used?
if you used modaco, do it needed to update the radio rom too?
do the contacts or saved data lost during the process?

cheers.

I first used the generic pre-rooted rom. But currently change to Modaco, since he has been doing a bit more with the kernel and speeding up the ROM. Other then that, because i prefer to have my roms running out of the memory card which cannot be done with a generic pre-rooted rom.

I still have not upgraded my radio, since i find that i get good signals with it, and some people especially in the UK prefer to use other radios since they claim that it has better connection.
I would say this is a matter of trial and error, if you find there is nothing wrong with the radio, then stay with it, if you find a problem then try changing.

My contacts are all synced with my google hence i don't worry much about it, but i did use MyBackup Pro to save my sms and call logs.

Hope that helps.

agree! backup is the most important part in trying of rooting + flashing rom.

Me also use google contact and after sign-in all are synced up.

Yes, it is pretty much the same as any phone brought in by SiS. I know some others have asked before, the 16gb micro sd that came with the phone is only class 2. I turned it into a mini usb drive with a reader and bought a class 6 8gb for the phone. biggrin.gif

after install htc sync, plug in the usb cable into your Hero. in the Hero, press 'menu' then 'Settings' then 'Wireless controls' then tick 'Mobile network sharing'.

Your PC will prompt for driver then get it from 'C:\Program Files\HTC\HTC Driver\Driver Files\Vista_x86'

i think is some sort of bugs. try switch On Airplane mode then turn back to Normal Mode. or Switch Off/On your phone. then try connect to your mobile connection.

Modaco's rom does not include the APN's (instructions for the phone )required to connect to the network, you will need to set it manually, you may need to do it for mms too. Please refer to ur telco's website for more details.
