Hey Levi, are you the one in Starhub previously?

Well i am waiting for the Hero too, or maybe the Magic, can't decide much. But after looking at the video i guess moving onto a virtual keyboard requires confident. Haih.

Currently using the G1 with a modded rom. I was using Palm before this and after that, Windows just doesn't suit me. Android was a big of an enjoyment to use.

@itanium : Hmm, the acer one is using snapdragon?

I see that it lacks a scroller, or does it have a special touch base sensor?

In regards to apps, owning a itouch, i agree that iphone apps are vastly rich in numbers, but if i don't jail break i can't get the app easily.

The most thing i enjoy about android is Functional app for free. =(
Anyway after having widgets and notifications functions, i don't think i can stand an iphone.

naTTan, acer's snapdragon on WM. And i have been using the OS3 before andriod so for the time being the apps on iphone is still better than those available on android - hope for more of those apps soon. Both have their own pro/cons - there is NO such thing as ONE device/platform to rule them all.
*
True, but as i said the cost factor for a decent iphone apps is seriously discouraging for me at least. Where else android is pretty much free since you always have a decent free app available. Although that being said, it's true as of now iphone app is pretty much kind in the sense of number and functionality, but damn do they cost. (Jailbreak and pirating is a solution if you could called it one.)

There is no one platform to rule it all, and some OS would evolve sooner then later, but as of now, lacking in a proper notification method is a drawback for iphone app, and another critical point would be multi task. Actually i always wonder why the need to limit multi task, isn't iphone phone in general have their own dedicated gpu variant? Couldn't they handle multi task better?

Just came back from HTC shop at KLCC, and they still don't have any exact date for SIS warranty Hero, and they didn't bring any non-SIS phone neither :-(

And to my amusement, they said now is the prime time for Magic, as they are pushing Magic to as many customer as possible. HTC Hero? Not quite yet :-(

Haiz. I hope I can rely from other shop with SIS warranty.

On the other note, I just played with Magic, and yes the touch screen is not as sensitive as iPhone. I actually scrubs the screen to move around the screen. Not as 'barely touch' to operate an iPhone.
*
Ok so far i am pretty dissapointed with SIS Malaysia. HTC Magic is a phone with a free OS, but they are charging it at 2.3K, which is ridiculous, Celcom is giving it at 1.4K with a contract of one year only. Even CIMB store is giving it at 1999. So SIS Malaysia can you stop being an ass?

Btw Levi, if you want to root, don't get the SIS, apperently i went to SIS Ipoh, and they say any hacking of the software would break the warranty. =(

Oh is it? Then I guess no point waiting for SIS warranty then. I might as well buy it from garage sales :-) RM2500. At least it's much more cheaper than the projected price, RM2800 (according to Action KLCC branch)

But wait. How about confirmed hardware problem? Touch screen or maybe trackball failure. I don't think rooting will cause that kind of hardware problem.

However, from my reading at xda, they say you can always get back to your official ROM, thus you can get your warranty back.
*
Yeah i was thinking about that too. I am not sure on the SPL changeability of Magic devices, since they would be using the new SPL.

Btw isn't CIMB store selling it for like RM 1999? CIMB deal

Quite a bargain actually

I hacked my phone, HTC s170, hard spl it, then reflash back to ori rom b4 passing to them for warranty, guess what, it works, twice( 2nd time is because i complain they peel off a lot of the paint).
So, they can't detect any software changes.

U loose the camera, the interface and lotz of memory.
*
Nice, but not sure if android broken SPL can be paste back on.

But the price is still a con case, they are not actually paying for OS rights ( in regards to android) so what the hell with the price man?

However you must consider that android is a relatively new OS and requires additional software development and marketing. So it is still acceptable that the handsets are in the same price range. Also you do need to note that Microsoft maybe selling windows mobile at a relative cheap price.
*
Actually i applaud the fact that HTC developed the Rosie UI for HTC Hero, but the Magic comes with the bare essentials. It would be no different then my G1, other then a bigger RAM?

Google themselves are leading the development of the OS, and it's based on a lot of input for the community.

That being said, i am not blaming HTC rather i am scrutinizing SIS role in all this, they could be the very one jacking up the price since they are the only one bringing it in. I mean when i ask how come celcom is able to produce theirs at 1499 they say that's because theirs come with all the google app. Which is true, but since when did google charge anyone for their app?

I mean if we take a look at Ebay prices, they are letting it go at the mark of RM 1200 to RM 1800 after conversion. It just saddens me in this regard, i mean when i had the palm, the price was way over our neighbours down south, and having the same experience with a free OS, leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

@Levi congrats on the phone can't wait for the review i wish i can get one too.

Hmm at rm 2399 its weird that they wont be reducing magic price,

Btw I think we should have a proper sub forum in regards to android if the user base keeps increasing?

To whoever ask about the market, it doesn't matter where you get your hp from the mmarket will be a local one. However there is an app call market enabler for download which allows you to choose your market I have set mine to us market sinnce last fm can't be found in the local market. If you want to buy app get a google checkout account.

Will definitely download Market Enabler when I get my phone. Have also signed-up for Google Checkout Account. Thank you for the info.  notworthy.gif

No problem, but the market enabler is not found in the market, the classiest thing about Android is that it allows you to install 3rd party app, without the need to jailbreak.

2 3rd party app you should consider is, Market enabler and Wifi tether.

Market enbler
Wifi tether

Enjoy your android experience.

Most of the apps are free, welcome to open source, i have always run on free apps, paid apps have not been a necessity for me.

Have you look at your market yet?

The latest UK HTC Hero update is now available.  http://tinyurl.com/kj98qt

I read that it will make rooting the phone difficult. Are you currently using the latest ROM? Would you be able to advice noobs like me on which is the best and simplest tutorial to root the Hero? This is all so new and exciting ... but a little guidance will be greatly appreciated. I've read up on Modaco, and then of coz, the TheUnlockr .... not sure which is the simplest.

I'll be getting my phone only in 1st week of Oct. So, doing a lot of reading now.
*
Hmm i am not using Hero, so i won't be much use.

Hopefully, others here can help you.

Apperently, there is a guide to gain back the root from that update.

Link

After following those steps you can follow the root tutorial back to gain root.

But i would say don't worry usually there will always be some one out there cracking new ways to gain root.

ps360,

What's the difference between leaked Nordic RUU update with the UK? Or between UK RUU with SEA RUU?

Are you sure the rooting is going to be more difficult after the latest RUU update? Any source on that?

Well, I'm on theunlokr side :-) The steps involved are fewer than the other, and come with video tutorial. You just tap the menus instead of typing the codes.
*
There's already a WWE version of it, so i won't worry.

Root would be more difficult in the sense that the update doesn't allow HBOOT. But there is a method around that as of now, it's in the link i gave above.

I have no hero so i am not interested much in it's development =(

i tried hero again today. The sms key tap is suitable for those with short finger nail on the thumb. Long finger nail very hard to get accurate tap.
*
It's heat sensitive if i am not mistaken, you need to touch it with the pulp of your fingers.

Well, how to disable Market auto download? I downloaded several apps, and decided not to use them anymore.

However, the apps will download themselves automatically after I wipe my Hero. How to stop them/disable that?
*
It doesn't occur like that, if you download an app recently and then wipe, when you sync it back it will download back the app recently install. I am not sure what the definition of recently means, but usually within a one day span for me. Why do you wipe to remove the app? try uninstalling?

installed custom ROM will void local SIS warranty, is it possible that we re-install back ori ROM when we send in to claim warranty?

Em..but...custom ROM don hv chinese support..too bad...

Hope HTC will release new official ROM with Market.
*
There is a chinese IME in the market you just have to look for it.

Actually i approached one of the mod, and ask if Android can be a forum by itself, and different threads on the each phone as well as thread common to android in general. It's hard to keep up like this when Hero, Magic and G1 can be using all the same roms.

Does it mean that with Nandroid V2.2, we can re-load the ori ROM just like the step in loading the custom ROM, in case we want to send in for warranty claim?
*
Yes you can put the Ori rom, but your recovery image and SPL will still be the modified version.
