It was slightly front focused. Not blur due to slow shutter speed. The shutter is already sufficient @ 1/640.

From your exif, you were using evaluative metering? An easier way is just switch to spot metering and meter the bright sun behind smile.gif

I wasn't too bothered with the metering actually. I just used manual and adjusted the shutter speed & aperture until I get this desired effect (it was a rare occasion where I had some time to spare...). I had tried higher shutter speeds also, but I ended up with the sky being too dark for my liking. I thought this shot was just nice, almost completely blacked out the details on the dragon. smile.gif

I used DRO to boost the details in the shadows. Meaning you will not get completely darkened off shadows. And the +5 indicates that the DRO was set at the highest level (meaning the camera was trying to extract the most details out of your photo). But you have to be careful because if your shot was underexposed (on purpose or otherwise), then DRO will induce a significant amount of noise into the shot.

DRO only works on jpeg files though. It doesn't have any effects on the RAW files. smile.gif

Owh ok. If your intention were to make the dragon completely black out then you can try the method I've mentioned just now. Speaking of composition, it's somehow like hanging there. Anyway nice idea to frame it with the rising sun. smile.gif

If you don't talk gears, you would have just stay with a PnS instead of upgrading to DSLR. It takes two to tango and the two main elements to tango in photography is the photographer and equipments smile.gif

You'll start to fancy bigger and longer lenses once your wallet grow fatter, just like how you fancy DSLR over PnS once your wallet grew fatter biggrin.gif

It's all about budget. Once you have the budget, you might consider to upgrade. If you don't have the budget, you'll give thousand of excuses to not to upgrade.

That's a sweet lens. Good lens for walkaround, weddings and event photography. Just make sure you test kaw kaw before buying as some of the copies suffer from back / front focus smile.gif

I just got myself back a Tammy 17-50mm f2.8. My forth time owning this lens. Still loving the transformers focusing sound effect tongue.gif

Yes, I could try to underexpose the shot even more if I wanted the silhouette completely black. But like I said, the sky would had been too dark for my taste. Either that, or I wait for an even later time to shoot this same photo (which I wasn't too keen on). It was a setting sun, not a rising sun for this shot. tongue.gif But yeah, thanks for your tips. Will keep that in mind. biggrin.gif

... and talk about gears. It is true that both Canon & Nikon had came out with video recording for some of their dslr cameras. And I foresee this trend will continue to grow. It was like what happened with liveview just a couple of years ago. Look at where the liveview technology is nowadays! Sony didn't go with the convention when they created their own liveview system. The innovation in Sony's liveview system was that it uses a separate, smaller sensor to generate the liveview picture stream. This enables the Sony cameras to focus just as fast in liveview mode as normal, non-liveview mode. You will notice that the liveview system used by Canon & Nikon will always entails a certain amount of focusing lag because they employed the actual image capturing sensor of the camera (hence defeating the conventional, much faster AF system in these cameras in the process).

Of course, in adopting the liveview system that Sony used at the moment, they paid the price of their liveview system not being able to record any video in HD mode (since the picture streamed in the liveview mode is not a high resolution stream).

So there you have it. The reason why it will not be easy for Sony to simply just add in HD video recording into the present crop of alpha cameras. smile.gif But we may never know. Perhaps the next incarnation of alpha cameras will use another method to achieve HD video recording. You think Sony will want to sit still and do nothing about this new fad? I won't bet my money on thatt.....

One thing for sure, I won't decide on a camera because it has HD video recording or not. The same reason I won't decide on a camera based on if it has liveview or not. I simply don't use it enough to put it as a main reason to get a dslr. I want video, I will get a proper video cam. If I want liveview.... well, I don't really want liveview! tongue.gif

... again about lenses. Don't worry lah, Sony's lenses line-up is already bulging up. Sony already has the most desirable line-up of Carl Zeiss autofocus lenses that users of other systems can only drool about. The CZ2470 + A900 combo alone had caused quite a lot of working pros to switch system or maintain a 2 system working line-up. Read about it on the net. I didn't make this up myself. I think even albnok witnessed with his own eyes a working pro (who was using a full fledged Nikon system) who bought an A900.

Bottom line is, don't worry about who is jumping ship to which system. The important part is you and I are enjoying our times taking photos with our cameras. That's what count. Let Sony worry about other people not picking up the Alpha system. We are already on board, so lets relax and enjoy photography! laugh.gif

OK, I'm too long winded liao. Just want to release a long essay upon you guys before I hit the sack. Good night guys. biggrin.gif

SpOOkY: Sunlight is not 2600-2800K! That's tungsten/incandescent bulb light.

chiggy, I find it odd since daylight is 5500K or so. The flash should be slightly warmer at maybe 6500K.

Superb shot, lehtung! The crocodile is kinda cute jumping up and reaching for it like that!

sidewinderz: A brighter lens will let the camera detect focus faster.

I am a night shooter but F2.8 is not bright enough; gotta have at least F1.8.

neo_lam: Use Live View to set the Kelvin WB - it is really helpful! Once you get the hang of it, you'll know that 4500K M6 is a flourescent tube, for example, or 2700K is an orange bulb...

0168257061: The Carl Zeiss 16-35mm F2.8 SSM ultra-wide angle full-frame lens is supposed to have a higher price point than both the 24-70mm and 70-200mm lenses. The price is not released yet, but my personal estimate is RM6xxx. Remember that it's a Zeiss and they've always been strong on wide-angle lenses. The Sony 70-400mm F4-5.6G SSM has already started selling elsewhere, so it should be very soon that the 16-35mm would be for sale.

You're just one call / one sms away to Shashinki to clear your doubts. smile.gif

It was like what happened

im not a big fan of sony, so idont care if sony doesnt produce HD video recording DSLR..because i really dont need it for the time being..if two years from now sony didnt produce that function also, and that time i need that function, i dont mind to change to another system..

im choosing the brand because of the quality and the value for money, not because the brand itself..

dont worry, every ship got their own marketing strategy..

Enter the dragon! tongue.gif

I had to switch DRO off to get the dark silhouette! So strong was the DRO effects of the A700. biggrin.gif

bro kysham: hope you dont mind,i like the pic but i think the silhouette can be darker, right now, i still see quite a fair bit of the dragon, maybe it is just me, i prefer a almost total black silhouette.

besides, the bottom part of the dragon looks abit confusing, the legs is overlapping the body causing it to look like 1 piece of something only. try avoiding having overlaps in silhouette? i think it will look perfect..

Bro albert:sorry i cant recall if i did mention that sunlight is 2600k smile.gif...but this is what i posted in v20:
2600k - halogen (car headlight)
4300k - daylight in the morning
6000k - pure white
8000k - white + bluish
1000k - purplish+ pinkish
something like that
sorry for any confusion...

Don't worry about commenting on my photos. biggrin.gif I love comments. It helps me improve. thumbup.gif It is not like as if I'm the best photographer in the world and that I posted up my shots to impress you guys. Come on.... I posted it up to share and hopefully if you guys have any idea how to improve it, then you guys can give me the suggestion to improve it, like what bro vikingw2k and yourself is doing. I like it! smile.gif

And you are right about the bottom of the photo being a bit messy. Hmm... I was trying to give it a bit of "ground" to anchor the dragon. Actually I initially called this photo "The Rise of the Dragon" in my flickr site. But looks like the "ground" part where the dragon is supposed to rise from is a bit too messy. Thanks for the pointers! thumbup.gif

bought a200 because its really worth for my budget and my so called noob in photography..it has everyting in one body just for oni rm1999 (last time i bought la). i like it because all control button can be reached by my right fingers, so i can change my setting faster..what i like most is where the dial toggle located, very comfortable to use it rather than nikon's and canon's..

and i can have such a big community and free workshop! thumbup.gif

For me, I would save up a bit more for a Full Frame and the CZ 24-70mm F2.8, the 16-80 is nice but it's still a DT lens. Sorry, I kena FF poison bad so my next upgrade is FF or bust! My A100 will be the only cam until then, hehehehe.

Aiyah, slowly lar.... save first for the FF. May not be A900... who knows Sony may just intro a budget FF, hehehehehe. Then only save up for the CZ lor.... I have one FF lens that I can use - my KM50mm F/1.7

Just curious, if you hate it, why do you still want to shoot it then? smile.gif

Perhaps you could work out more on the composition rather than clicking away.

Apply some Rule or Third, once you mastered it, break it!

Like that 'ngam, ngam' lar...

I put the 50mm on the FF and it can take candid's with just right framing.
I put the 18-250 on the APS-C for wide angle
If push comes to shove, I put the 18-250 on the FF for better high ISO performance.
And the 50mm on the APS-C becomes and short telephoto that's good for portraits.

That's is until I get the 24-70mm.... THEN I will be clawing for a FF telephoto! tongue.gif

That's why my lens wishlist is just the 24-70 plus the 70-300. Coz that's all I'll need.

You're most welcome. Think before you snap. Try a variety of angles to see which one is nice. smile.gif

You can't expect much from a 1xx speedlite. biggrin.gif

I would rather save up more and go for cobra straight.

Welcome to the Alpha family! laugh.gif

Pro1D is the higher spec filters from HOYA. They feature some coatings on the filter's glass to help cut flare and improve contrast. That's why it is more expensive. The HMC range is cheaper but is more susceptible to flare & ghosting. I would recommend you to go for the Pro1D version if you are willing to spend on filters. smile.gif

kysham, the reason is due to lens option, too limited for D60 which does not have motor in it. and when I want to get 50mm, I cant with the existing ones. the latest 50mm nikorr with AF-S is here, but the price is crazy for a new comer like me (1 month old)

i have good pic experience with D60, and I know the performance is not a big difference with A200

some example;

plus points for A200 from my view is
-built in motor
-lens option
-very cheap with twin kit lens
-no difference with A350 but the live view and bigger pixels
-it's a sony

didn't realized that filter price went up a lot
last year saw the pro 1D going for around 80-90 for the 55mm diameter
now it's around 130

how about kenko, their product naming seems to follow Hoya

in addition, i found the B+W 010 UV filter selling for about 130 too
any idea how does it stand up to the Hoya Pro 1D?

for anyone that migrating from point-and-shoot camera... sure will pick A300...
coz of the live view system....

other spec is the same with A200... price diff around RM300-400 wasnt it?

Do you have any other lenses in your Nikon system other than the original kitlens that came with the D60? If yes, and you wished to keep them, then I think an upgrade to another higher grade Nikon is a better option. But looking at the 2 photos you got, I can understand why you would want a large aperture 50mm lens. smile.gif If that's the reason, then I don't see why you would want to buy a twin lens kit for the A200. Might as well buy the single lens kit and use the saved money to buy a 2nd hand 50mm f1.7 (cost around RM500, used) for your low light work. And yes, you get built in vibration reduction even with the 50mm lens! That helps in your low light work too! rclxm9.gif

a200 with 1 kit is only about 1699 at sony centre, perhaps cheaper at street shop.. wah that's good!
with 50mm second hand minolta also works right? icon_rolleyes.gif

well this is a plus points for me to sell my D60 and get a200

bro, kalau nak save lagi, usha2 dulu yang second hand, mesti ada punya. Kekadang A300/350 baru 4/5 bulan maybe slightly higher than new A200. Just my 2 cents lah.......

I think some of the guys in KL (I'm not from around KL. Me in KK smile.gif ) are saying the street price of A200 single lens kit is RM14xx. Add a 50mm for around RM500 and you are looking at a decent, fully image stabilized system for less than RM2k! brows.gif And yes... a 2nd hand Minolta 50mm will work just fine on the A200, with image stabilization working at full functionality.

Though, if you do stick with the D60 there is always the Nikkor AF-S 35mm F1.8G DX, price not known. For that, I am jealous, and I hope Sony has an answer to that.

The 35mm f1.8 Nikkor lens is a specific DX (i.e. APS-C) lens. I see it is retailing for USD199 in the states.... That is around RM720 in Malaysia money (assuming a conversion rate of 3.60). That is pretty cheap for a brand new lens. Although... you don't get image stabilization with that lens.....

Why don't just upgrade your body to D80?

Then you can AF with ya 50mm smile.gif

if I sell my d60, say i get rm1600, i already can buy a200+kit and with just extra few hundred bucks, I can have 50mm secondhand already.

but upgrading to d80, from rm1600 resell price, hmm kinda expensive to spend

d80 body only already cost me 2200

but a200 + kit lens + 50mm is I believe less than d80 body only

*haih, wish I know all these before I even purchase D60 haha. tu la, tak kenal mana nak tau. skarang dah kenal, sibuk nak tukar2. macam kat skolah dulu-dulu, nak tukar tempat bila tau kita duduk kat sebelah budak yang tak best tongue.gif

btw uner, what I'm trying to say is, there's a rumor that 50mm F1.8 for a-mount will be released soon. May be you can wait for that.

Hold on to the D60 awhile more.

well if that's the case, then i will prepare to sell my d60, and go for a200.

get the 1 kit lens package, and hold for the coming 50mm f1.8, by the time they release I believe I can afford ady. hope the price is not as expensive as nikorr AF-S

therefore, selling my d60kit = getting new a200kit (cheaper), no extra cost involve.

great!

more lens but d60 is limited to AF-S only. not much our there, and if there is, it's way too expensive than the normal AF lens

if you put enough force on the head you would not need to release the lock and get it swivel. This is my experience with my F42

if you want to do maintenance of your camera then it was justified. if just want to blow away the dust resided on your sensor sweat.gif

if not mistaken service fee is chargeable at RM250? anyone? and its not including cost of part replaced.

uner, the 35mm F1.8 AF-S should not cost more than the D60. I think. Or else D60 owners will think twice about it LOL.

Though, at Laundry, the 50mm on APS-C is a very nice range when you're standing close to the barricades.

LOL about sitting next to the budak yang best!

dinraxxx, the D60 cannot auto-focus Nikkor AF-D (without SWM) lenses (as well as Tamrons before TypeII and Sigmas before HSM.) The D90 can. So you might enjoy using a 50mm F1.8 on the D90... but the same lens on a D60 is manual focus only.

luzzio, I like the color tone of the third picture!

ryzan76, I love the tone of the old man in songkok! It's very like a silver print. (Minus the minor artifact on the lady in the bottom-left corner.)

fansoption: The reason is so you can quickly turn it back to default front position without pressing any buttons. However to get out of front position you will have to press.

The F58 has NO buttons to unlock rotation at all. biggrin.gif

signither, sounds like you might want to get the F58 and 50mm F1.4, and sell the F42. biggrin.gif

NewCell, set your WB to Cloudy. It might bring out the color better. Of course, it would be best to shoot in nice afternoon daylight where the color is best.

HoLy coW!!! the 70-300 G with A900.... darn nice....

"I should note that the 5D MKII's are not rated as weather resistant, but then neither are the Sony A900's. I deliberately allowed both of my A900 bodies be exposed to the rain for two days ashore to see how they would stand up. There were no operational difficulties. I also have used the Sonys back here in Toronto in snow storms, (unprotected), both before and after the Antarctic trip, with no ill effects. Though also not claimed as weather sealed, they appear to be as well protected as any other camera I've ever used.

"

so cute...

hi, anyone using the Tamron SP AF 10-24mm

found no review on this lens yet...did the sony version available now?

according to the review here, this lens seems soft or not sharp at all.

can anyone confirm this?

sony have a very limited UWA....the SAL 1118, tamron 1118 (similar to sony), minolta 1118 (hard to find) and sigma 10-20 only (dunno this got gear problem)

fas29, I use RawTherapee. It's freeware and has a good feature set, including a "processing queue" and profiles so you can just do the settings for one picture and put that same setting for other pictures.

bysquashy, nice #2!

ahtsong, so far no reports on the Sigma 10-20mm having gear stripping. DPReview also has a review on the Tamron 10-24mm!

got a problem here, my sal50/1.4 got problem
the focusing ring stuck big time, need force to turn it off camera
when i mount it to body and af also didn't turn much, seem can turn only one way when i try to focus at different area

is the service centre at midvaley is the only service centre? coz i'm not in kl and don't know when will go to kl.

if i send the lens to somebody else for him to go service for me can arrr?

Focus is most probably jammed. The service centre in Midvalley should be able to handle this problem. Send it to them lah. Should be OK. Still under warranty right?

These shots are difficult to judge which is better. Should do an outdoor shoot. That should be able to tell these 2 lenses apart better. The contrast in these shots are not that great, so the CZ do not really shine in these shots. Give it a go at outdoor shots, should be able to tell. smile.gif

suchap69, you can send it to your local dealer but they also need to send it to Sony Service Center in Midvalley Northpoint.

Of course, if you can find an otai camera repair shop, they will be able to fix it. Most Sony lenses are very simple internally as it's based on the Minoltas without SSM or electronic aperture control. It's probably some grit stuck in the focusing helicoid (the metal screw inside.)

MAHA combos are better.
2700mah for power.
Then keep another 2100mah in bag. Low discharge can keep for long time.
Same charger but can charge 2 different type batteries.

But I got my Sanyo Eneloop. I bought it coz it design looks nice. Haha

guys...jz found out something i dont understand....
i often use Adobe Lightroom to convert my RAW into jpeg....
and i found out the 70% quality of Jpeg is just identity to 100% of Jpeg in terms of sharpness and all kind of details....
so guys....which should i choose for converting??
coz 70% is quite saving up the capacity....

u mean identical?
no.. if u see big big size picture the difference is noticeble.. for small pics, the quality is not very visible..

i notice that my lense gets dirty pretty fast, so not i'm looking for lense cleaning solutions
from my observation, lenspen seems to be a popular choice
however, while browsing at yamiya, i came across lense cleaning paper.

there are many cons regarding this VG according to someone who just bought it recently

Con's
1. On/off switch hard to use. hard to turn on and off
2. Don't have Sony Alpha logo
3. Quite warm a bit - feel different then i hold the camera grip (i think because of the material)
4. Octopus Battery grip wont change to second battery automatically when the 1st battery finish-up

How long can the battery last?

Nowadays I invest more in Maha. I used to invest on Sanyo. Somehow I prefer Maha.

The problem is, when i take picture with bounce flash or what it often got dull(very dark picture). Like very faster shutter but it about 1/30 or 1/60.

I had GP 2700mAh lemons. I'd been using GPs and Sanyos before this all the while. Changed to Energizer 2500 mAhs and Eneloop 2100 mAhs.

dingenius3: Go find out what is similiar to the Alpha Shooting Vest, its price, including shipping, and customization, and top it up to its retail price.

I think you'll come to a similiar figure.

Wonka, you should save up for a Sigma 30mm F1.4.

fas29, show us a picture!

fas29, it might be that the flash was not in TTL. If you use an adapter it will certainly not have TTL. Also, angle is important - if you shoot the wrong angle, even with TTL, you'll get a bright stripe across the top of your image.

Wonka: The Sigma 30mm F1.4 as you know has a much better angle. That alone justifies it because you can leave your kit lens at home!

I'd say it is sharp; don't know how sharp compared to the Sony, but definitely sharp.

A200 VS D60 NooB Comparison (Subjective= In My Opinion)
No fanboyism: Just purely my observations and testing experienced

So i had my hands on both cameras, short comparison

Build quality: D60 has an upperhand, feels more solid, tightly fir, blends together well. The A200 is a bit creeky here and there, but still overall well built .Nevertheless, both are much better than the plasticky Canon 1000D. D60> A200 >1000D
Winner: Nikon

Ergonomics: D60 feels a bit small to me, the grip area doesn't seem to blend in well with my fingers. The A200 has a larger body grip, more squarish and a bit more seperated. Feels heavier too, which is great when u've got heavier lenses, and it feels more balanced.
Winner: Sony

Noise: Side to side comparison, the D60 is a TAD better in noise control. Sony A200 wasn't THAT bad, just trailing behind by a little, not by a large margin. Before testing the D60, i would have anticipated a Bigger difference, however it didn't turn out to be that way, again, all to my eyes' comparison
Winner: Nikon

AWB: Here, the Sony excels. Virtually kills the AWB of nikon. As you can see from the pic, there's a TONE of differences between both cams. the Sony known for its excellent AWB which represents the color temp(from real life view) accurately. & rightly so it deserves it. no debate here.
Winner : Sony
user posted image

IQ: Both are comparatively good, so to speak. Sony tends to be towards the soft side, more refined way of presenting it. IQ seems to be more natural, mimicking the real life condition. Nikon on the other hands, produces a little too VIVID colors. Everything seems to be a little overdone here and there. Colors are no doubt punchy and very contrasting. Again depending on individual's preferences. Perhaps a too little much IQ fixings, makes the output a little too harsh and 'fake'. I'm a naturalist, so i would prefer Sony.
Winner: None, Subjective

All in all, given the other features(crucial only)
Sony (9AF, Built in SSS, RM1.45K, wireless, larger body grip)
vs
Nikon [3AF, Powerful AF Assist Lamp (which i like),better lense built quality(which i believed has a little better IQ]

Which to go?
Easy, if your looking for features:performance- > Sony
Brand Name,AF Assist lamp,Probably don mind spending more on VR lense, punchy & Vivid color -> Nikon

Again, those are all my Noobie statements, given i've been into photography for around 2months only

yes....WB is like when u look at the pic but u feel tht the color is not normal....
like the pix fas29 took....the yellowish is too over until abnormal so we can said tht the WB is not accurate...

err..the antifog spray is not for the sensor.. it is for the lens. Dont touch the sensor if u can get rid of the dust by using a blower.

Use blower? Anyway, what you should do is "map" out where the dust is on your sensor and then concentrate the blower's output on the section of the sensor where the dust is. This is more effective instead of simply just blind-blind tembak saje... But do remember the image on the sensor is terbalik punya ya... so when you mapped it out, it should be reversed & upside down... biggrin.gif

Use blower? Anyway, what you should do is "map" out where the dust is on your sensor and then concentrate the blower's output on the section of the sensor where the dust is. This is more effective instead of simply just blind-blind tembak saje... But do remember the image on the sensor is terbalik punya ya... so when you mapped it out, it should be reversed & upside down...  biggrin.gif

i think i better send to some shops to clean it for me.....

Is your set under warranty? Anyway, if I remember correctly, they should be able to give you a free 1 time service / cleaning. I remembered there is something like that. Is your dust problem serious? Why don't you take a shot and show to us and perhaps we can try to asses how bad is it? We are alpha community mah... must help each other punya.... thumbup.gif

F42 it self worth RM650 already
SAL 1870 kit lens & SAL 75300( can sell for Rm600-Rm650)
which leaves the A200 body only RM200 drool.gif drool.gif

A200 VS D60 NooB Comparison (Subjective= In My Opinion)
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

*
I've been testing out the D60 during CNY too, which belong to my cousin's friend.
Definitely got the built quality. Very solid, got metal feel. While I'm testing the D60, my uncle went picking some coconuts and posed up to me, I compose and press the shutter, but heck, it took longer than a200 to focus. And missed the shot because of I thought I took the picture already. Maybe because I was get too used to a200 focusing time.
However, in close up, where distance is short, D60 can focus in no time and no hunting in lowlight. Maybe because of the assist light. The kitlens was great too, high built quality and looks 'stylish'. Really hope Sony improves their kitlens. But display wise, when I zoomed the photo, the photo become 'pixelate', lower resolution compare to a200. That's normal thought because D60 is older than a200 (isn't it? 2.5 inch LCD era).

There is some points I love about D60; it's smaller in size so won't draw much attention traveling around and it's built quality.
"Clicky" D60 shutter sound compared to "Snappy" a200 shutter. I think I love the Clicky sound more..

But still, a200 is still the award winning entry-level DSLR isn't it? icon_rolleyes.gif

Again, I only compared the D60 and a200, not their brand. This has nothing to do with the brand anyway and I didn't conclude myself "which brand are better and the best of these two". So pls don't flame me. shocking.gif shakehead.gif

fas29, if you shoot at a very close distance but put the bounce head up at 45 degrees, you will get the bright stripe of light (meaning it's not tilted up enough.)

kucingfight, don't forget the dedicated ISO and Drive buttons on the A200!
