@spanker,

-Could you edit the topic description so it would states ST3*340AS also (this series is the mostly affected), since you're the thread starter (TS)?

-Or, maybe you can just put "Seagate 500GB/750GB/1TB 7200.11 drives" only.
Regards.

Sure thing.

Hi all,

Please do not simply update your firmware. Latest news now is that Seagate has finally acknowledged this problem and they will be releasing a firmware soon.

http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/self...sp?DocId=207931

Also, a statement from their spokesman:
http://techreport.com/discussions.x/16246

So those with this drive that is still running, hang in there make sure you have backups before you shutdown each time.

Those with this brick-ed drive and need to get the data back, wait for the news on free recovery.
*
They probably didn't want to acknowledge the problem because they don't know how to duplicate it in their labs, and even if they could duplicate it, they probably couldn't find the cause (since the HDD would've died), and even then, even when they have found the cause and they still need to find a fix which will cause no further problems. I expect the firmware to be out in early February earliest. Till then, I can only keep my fingers crossed with my current functional 7200.11.

Any news on the HD Doctor? Btw, I'm trying to get the RS232 connector for the drive terminal, do you know where i can get one?

Added on January 18, 2009, 10:58 pmHmm.... looks like there may be silver lining amongst the clouds after all:

Seagate offers fix for 7200.11 Barracudas, and FREE data recovery for bricked units.

Or is it just wishful thinking?

From the serial checker below, i try to check my serial and it's said that "Your drive is NOT affected".
http://support.seagate.com/sncheck.html

But then i try one by one the serial from msfn forum, many of the fail hard disk also said said "Your drive is NOT affected"... How come????

http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=128514

Here i wrote some fail hard disk that reported at msfn forum but Seagate Serial Checker said Your drive is NOT affected"..

1) 5QJ03R2M
2) 9QM8BLTQ
3) 5QJ0JRE3

S*hit....is the serial checker very2 reliable???
Now make me more miserable because i also using firmware SD15 from Thailand.. It's just waiting the timebomb to explode...

I'm having Model: ST3500320AS, Serial: 9QM3BZ5N, Firmware: SD15 but so far it's behaving fine? Perhaps it's because I'm having it to store my backup file as I'm having my OS on another 2 disks in RAID-0 so lesser activity on my 500GB biggrin.gif

I am not sure... sometimes after boot into the OS, the HDD led still blinking like many thing is loading... then sometimes when i browse through the folders inside back n forward, then it took a long time to display the icon again... dono is the OS slow or the problem from the hdd. but i only face this kind of problem from this seagate. my previous WD dont have this problem.... i am just worried that the drive may die suddenly... damn seagate... still dont want to fast fast release the firmware.... making me and everybody keep worried on the hdd...  shakehead.gif

Can anyone try out the online serial checker tools for verifying the affected drive? mine come back saying not affected. Please all the forumers here try to check using that tool n report in the result so that we know that tools is reliable or not....

bro,

ur HDD led stay busy symptom is exactly same as my seagate 500gb bought on April 2008.
the problem just surfaced these few days after i put the drive in horizontal condition.

when this happened, the system was frozen, Drive LED stayed on.
i just get in-patient and reset the system.
sometime, during boot, bios detected disk read error.

i checked the cable, it didt come loose.

after that, i put the drive in vertical condition, the symptom never happened again till now.

i checked the link, it stated the drive didt affect.
