By the way, it seems like if you leave the 1.5 GB operation Jumper alone (instead of removing it for 3GB operation), it is less likely to happen (doesn't mean it won't). Owners of the 500GB and 1 TB model are more likely to face this problem.

Anyone experiencing this problem?
Depends on your model and the firmware. And it when your PC powers down.

where's the jumper thing?

and IMO hdd failure is the most worse/headache among any hardwares in ur pc bcoz its the main memory storage for all ur data files etc.mobo or proc prob at least u can send for RMA while ur precious data are still intact.i;ve spend almost 5 hours installing windows and all the necessary updates driver etc just now bcoz of the stupid failure shakehead.gif

I wonder how widespread this problem actually is in Malaysia. We know it's worldwide from the MSFN forums where members have been tracking it geographically.

Gonna try and give seagate tech support a call tomorrow and see what they say. If they give me the run around, the best way to push seagate in the right direction is to hit them where it hurts, the local media. Hit their local subsidiary as well.

I think the next step would be forwarding it to some local PC mag or even the computer sections of the papers. The more publicity we bring, the clearer the picture will get on how widespread this is in malaysia.

Whole lot of these drives dumped at the PC fair. Alot more should die in the next couple of months. (3 month lifetime average? lol)

its getting worse on some it seems.average 3 weeks

i just checked the details of my replacement HDD after my 1st 1 went dead.the model is indeed ST3500320AS 7200.11,made in thailand, but didnt state OEM on the label and the firmware is SD1A.duno wheter is it affected as well hmm.gif hmm.gif

EDIT:
After some googling it seems SD1A is a newer firmware thn SD15,SD17 and SD18.but i not sure wheter it had solve the problem completely yet bcoz i just used it for 3 days.u can download the firmware and more info here

http://computerappblog.com/2008/12/02/seag...irmware-update/

note : google bout more info 1st before attempting to download and install the fw.

some ppl frm msfn forums reported lower die-ing rates of hdd with SD1A firmware recommend updating to it as well

Bro, I also just collected my RMA'ed HDD yesterday at C-zone. And my spoilt HDD was exactly the same as yours.Firstly the computer had some kind of loading applications. And then I shut down. Then next I turned on the PC, BIOS can't detect the HDD already doh.gif

]ic.guess have to start praying now sweat.gif sweat.gif .based on all the post here, most users cant detect their hdd after they turn on the comp since the last time shutting it down.so if the comp stay on for 24 hrs will it be safer?
