Blu-ray.com Exclusive: Blu-ray Player Benchmarks

user posted image
*Table by aiman04

user posted image
*Chart by Y3k Bug

Power on time:
Measures the time the player takes, in seconds, to power on from the remote control and to convey that it is ready to work via the HDTV display. The lower the number the better.

Disc Eject Time:
This test measures the amount of time it takes, in seconds, for a player to fully eject the disc tray while playing a Blu-ray movie. The lower the number the better.

Movie Load Time – Basic:
Measures the amount of time, in seconds, that a player takes to load a film, encoded without Java or BD+, from the time the disc tray starts closing to the time that content appears on the screen. BD drive speed can impact this number. The lower the number the better.

Movie Load Time - BD-J:
Measures the amount of time a player takes, in seconds, to load a film, encoded with BD-Java, from the time the disc tray starts closing to the time that content appears on the screen. BD drive speed can impact this number. The lower the number the better.

Movie Load Time – BD+:
Measures the amount of time a player takes, in seconds, to load a film, encoded with BD+ copy protection, from the time the disc tray starts closing to the time that content appears on the screen. BD drive speed can impact this number. The lower the number the better.

BD-J Overall Performance:
This measurement calculates the player's overall ability to efficiently execute BD-Java content. This will affect the player's smoothness of menus, games, and other features using BD-J. Some players will not execute this benchmark and are marked with a red “NO” in the performance section. A "NO" rating does not indicate poor performance, but simply that the player in question does not support the form of media that the test disc is recorded on. The higher the number the better.

The following tests measure player's BD-Java graphics abilities. These numbers show how efficient the player will be at loading and navigating menus as well as Java based games.

BD-J Small Object Performance:
Measures smoothness and speed of small Java graphic objects – the higher the number the better.

BD-J Large Object Performance:
Measures smoothness and speed of larger Java graphic objects - the higher the number the better.

BD-J Scaling Performance:
This test measures the player's ability to scale Java graphics for BD menus and games. The higher the number the better.

BD-J Opacity Performance:
This measurement calculates the player's ability to render graphics that are opaque. The higher the number the better.

Here's a little info for you guys, to save some budget and take advantage of the currency situation right now. My credit card charged me the GBP rate at 5.37 for my recent LOTR DVD purchase. For Band of Brothers:

UK: £29.77 + £3.58 = £33.35 (*5.45) = RM181.76
US: $54.99 + $8.98 = $63.97 (*3.65) = RM233.49

Also, if you don't want the extras and Animatrix, you can also save by ordering the UK version:

UK: £25.51 + £3.58 = £29.09 (*5.45) = RM158.54
US: $74.99 + $8.98 = $83.97 (*3.65) = RM306.49

This is based on standard shipping method. As you guys know, almost all of the time the UK shipment will arrive around 1 week only, while US shipment will arrive between 2 weeks (if you're lucky) and up to 6 weeks. There are same risks for both UK/US. The shipping rate will get cheaper with additional titles, for both UK/US.

Warner Bros always use the same transfer if they're handling both region's release, and they're always region free. So the PQ/AQ should be the same. Warner's Beowulf release in UK got 5 star PQ/AQ even though Paramount never released it in US at that time because of their HD DVD exclusive. Also, there is only one case reported here about AQ difference, and that was Paramount's Transformers.

So, it's up to you. tongue.gif

That probably true, but I know many of us never watch the extra features, and possibly don't want the Animatrix. For those people, the UK version (movies only) is their best choice and save some money. They should buy the US version if the cost is the same though, no doubt. biggrin.gif

Me? I don't even wanna buy the trilogy. I'm waiting for the individual release and buy the first movie only. Just trying to help. tongue.gif

BTW, if use VPost, the best weight to shipping price ratio is when we order 50 titles and it is shipped using 1 box.

For Vpost it comes to about RM 5.50 per title.

i have been watching some of the episodes and then re-watch them with the 'in-field guide with easy company' thing which has plenty of facts regarding the episodes....those are very informational. so...there are people (like me) who watched the special features.

A DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio track is offered for 'Wall•E,' in 6.1 Surround (48kHz/24-bit). (Note: The track is incorrectly labeled as 5.1 Surround on the packaging.)

Dual-layer should be only on one side. This probably a double-sided DVD.

We know that the HDTV also automatically upscale SD sources, the question is how good the result is? It's just another option.

For me, my AV receiver, DVD player and PS3 itself can upscale. But after comparing all options, my receiver provides the best upscaled PQ, so it takes the job. rclxms.gif

hahaa still nooby2 one.. so the crystal clear sound of waterfall already mesmerized me. looking forward for more tongue.gif

btw, comparing my pc(only with few ffdshow resize/tweak) and ps3, ps3 is better in upscaling in my case. the tv itself is out of question. very bad upscale.

So I tried vpost for the first time for my James Bond collections - the charges came to SGD33.27, after 10% paypal discount, SGD29.94.
This works out more expensive than Amazon expedited shipping for 2 items. Is this correct?

It's better to compare both shipping. Amazon go by quantity, vpost by weight/size.

The flap will still inside, you won't even remember it's there. And yes, even Disney uses this kind of casing sometimes. biggrin.gif

Always glad to help. biggrin.gif

If it's hard to lock it inside, you can force to close the casing with the flap inside. When you open it back it will then stay there permanently.

those hacked units are about 1.5x as much as the normal units.

as of today, sony s350 is selling around 240euro....

i was looking at those DIY chips they sell..at abt 69 to 89euro depending on the model, the one for sony it indicates skill level 7 needed (insanely hard).

Taukeh, I think Amazon will slash prices for a lot of movies judging by the current state of economy. Everyone is prudent in their spending liao. I bet it will hit us hard by early next year.

check the skill level needed to mod these players if you're intending to get the Chip kit......some of them are rated at 'insanely difficult'

also, although bluraymod claims that it will pass the FW update and such....no one really know if any of the future FW will brick the unit or not.

No, but if you have a UK version, don't compare it with a US version because you will be disappointed with your UK once you have heard the US version.

That price is for UK/EU residents with 17.5% VAT. Our price is even more cheaper, at only £7.64. Plus Royal Airmail shipping £3.58 = £11.22 = RM61.15. If order more can further save the shipping cost.

That's the loading page. In this case, it's checking for BD-Live through internet.

Looks like you have connection problem while loading the disc. Turn off internet connection and it will load within seconds.

My wifey liked it very much. So I'm buying it for her. It's probably a bit too goody-goody for me! The only real action in this movie is the singing and dancing around! Imagine Pierce Brosnan with his Bond (or Blonde) moves! I think it's like the typical Hindi movie...dancing & running up a hill, running around trees, etc. Something along that line. blush.gif whistling.gif

Exclusive review: The Dark Knight takes Blu-ray to a whole new level

user posted image

QUOTE
The real highpoint though is the 1.78:1 IMAX footage. As anybody who caught the film at an IMAX screening will know, Nolan shot a number of scenes in this higher resolution 70mm film format. Surprisingly you quickly start to forget all about the shifts between aspect ratio as the movie jumps from 35mm to 70mm content, and it soon starts to feel like a natural way of opening up the impact of the film's cityscapes and action scenes.

Amazon UK added some new titles for Buy 3 for Price of 2. Unfortunately, some of the newer titles are region locked (Fox, Disney). Anyone with Region B player will be happy though.

Blu-ray.com reviews The Dark Knight:

http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/movies.php?id=743&show=review

In the screenshots, you can see the different aspect ratios betweeen the 70mm IMAX shots and the regular 35mm. This will be a whole new experience in B D, with shifting ratios. The first movie to use shifting ratios was Stanley Kubrick's Dr Strangelove Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and and Love the Bomb DVD.

You'll have full screen (16x9) without the black bars during IMAX scenes (1.78:1 aspect ratio),

user posted image

And the black bar will appear during normal 35mm scenes (2.40:1 aspect ratio).

Agreed sounds dumb but some people dig that, but it would be great to get it early at reduced prices though...the real lucky ones are the part time reviewers who get their BD/DVD delivered ahead of time for review purposes. Tough job but nice one to have. How many movies they can watch in a day and remain objective is another thing.

Wah....so shiok....BD marathon! My marathon can only start on Saturday. Thanks to Bro Mega, I finally laid hands on Wall-E and Hellboy II. Also many thanks to Bro ARJ for securing Band of Brothers for me yesterday as well.

Both these sifus have helped me tremendously in securing some very good titles for my collection, as well as some invaluable advice. Cheers bros!

anyone noticed kung fu panda is on the 3for2 list on amazon uk?
*
Yeah but it's a Fox title so will be region locked! That's the sad part.

Edit: It is actually a Paramount title not Fox, Paramount is usually not region locked...

Sorry I'll take that back, it's actually Paramount, so I believe it should not be region locked. My mistake!

Just previewed Kung Fu Panda...the PQ and AQ can only be described in one word - AWESOME!!! (Tun Mega - you're right!)

Not to mention, it's damn funny as well. Heard the Canto version is even funnier!

I guess Pos Malaysia can handle kastam better than DHL/UPS. rclxms.gif

This time it takes 9 days, maybe because it was shipped on Friday, going through weekends twice.

January 27, 2009

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced The Bourne Trilogy will be coming to Blu-ray Disc on January 27 as a three-disc set. The individual films, The Bourne Conspiracy, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum, will not be available individually.

Each of the films will be presented in widescreen 1080p video and DTS-HD Master Audio, a first for the series.

All of the supplemental features from the previously released HD DVD will be ported to Blu-ray and, in an unexpected surprise, a few new features have been tacked on. BD-Live will be utilized to access all-new features including a strategy videogame that pits two players against each other in hand-to-hand combat.

The extensive list of extras for all three films are as follows.

with the recent price reductions....i emailed amazon cust service, my question was simple...either A. they refund me the price difference on items not shipped or B. cancel the order, i will re-order at reduced price.....they replied saying that it has gone into 'shipping process' so they cant cancel it..which is absolute cow-dung...and also gave me the usual blah on 'price guarantee policy'...

so i called them......and got my price difference......phone call probably cost more than the price diff...but what the hell.....i got what i wanted...wakakakaka

I just finished watching Dreamgirl. One of my best bluray experience yet (I like musical). First I ran the sound thru 5.1 onkyo but then i tried it with senn hd650. the sound quality is almost like lossless flac coming from zero DAC, which is rare for a movie. Losing surround sound is a small price to pay for lively soul music and rich detail that this bluray produce. I enjoy every second of the songs. Can't wait for Mamma mia

Just got Mamma Mia today from Amazon UK! Previewed for the first few minutes - AQ is really good (DTS HD MA). I saw some of it on DVD (ahem! one) and the sound was like really bad and I didn't like the movie. But now on BD, that's an entirely different experience. thumbup.gif

Maybe I will enjoy this movie after all! rclxms.gif

okay, just finished watching TDK, so here's my review:

Movie: This one should be simple enough. For those who have seen this at the movies, it's a no brainer. I still say this is one of the best (if not the ONLY) adaptation of a comic book hero. Basically, it's Batman if it happens in our REAL world. And it don't come any real than the world envisioned by Nolan. The story in TDK is much stronger as a follow up to Batman Begins, and it has Batman's No. 1 enemy in it, which also turned out to be the BEST character played by the late Heath Ledger, and hands-down the BEST representation of The Joker since Cesar Romero and Jack Nicholson. This isn't your Fantastic Four-like adaptation. No, no...it's a god-damn crime thriller on its own. Rating: 6/5...although it's not logical, but hell...it's just a bloody good movie

PQ: With great story reputation, comes great PQ. Warner delivers TDK with the exact PQ which was expected. I know it may be unfair to compare the PQ to the one in the cinema, but I must say...watching TDK on Blu does really make a BIG difference. The colors are never subdued OR oversaturated. As TDK has different tones (orange-brown for the night scenes and bluish for the Gotham day scenes), it all just pops out nicely. I really can't comment more on the PQ as it's just as good as any current blockbuster blu-ray title. It's clean, crisp and hell...even the yellow in Joker's teeth is clear. It just makes his teeth closer to your face. You can practically imagine the smell that comes with it. One thing to note, as some of us are aware, TDK will have shifting ratios. Particularly for the IMAX scenes. It really doesn't take you out of the movie flow (which I thought will happen), and true enough..whenever the IMAX scenes play...you get that feeling of the large screen. I love it that the whole Joker truck flip scene is in IMAX format, as is with all the cityscape shots. Overall, 5/5.

AQ: Dolby TrueHD. Same as Batman Begins? Not really. It's better this time around. You probably won't get to enjoy the fullness of the bass thumps at the beginning, but towards the middle part of the movie till the end...each explosion, crash, gunshot, punch, kick just thumps with awesome intensity. The earlier part, where there's a lot of dialogue happening, you may not hear the impact of the lossless audio. They somehow didn't use much of the surrounds throughout the movie, but there are occasional enveloping sounds. However, 99% of the time, dialogue is crisp and clear. The haunting soundtrack is played clearly on the fronts, and it really heightens the emotions in the movie. Only one thing to note: TDK is also set the same as other Warner titles - movie starts automatically and the default audio is Dolby Digital. So you need to set it to Dolby TrueHD at the start of the movie. Other than that, it's awesome. 5/5.

I haven't checked the supplements, but i'm sure it's going to be awesome as well.

A must-buy, no-brainer!! rclxm9.gif rclxm9.gif

okay, just finished watching TDK, so here's my review:
It really doesn't take you out of the movie flow (which I thought will happen), and true enough..whenever the IMAX scenes play...you get that feeling of the large screen. if anyone seemed to have problems on the fast action, blurriness and all...well after watching the BD..i can safely say...it's much..much clearer and it just seems to be a very different experience watching it on BD. icon_rolleyes.gif

When Matrix Trilogy was 1st listed in Amazon UK it was listed for UK14.99. Most people thought it was a mistake and Amazon would not honour the price but Amazon di honour the price. Great price...

Those who still don't have it better order quick. Last night I saw Crank selling at $8.99, but now already gone up $17.95.

This is fun! rclxms.gif
