2. what GPS program you're using in your phone?

3. this answer will depend on 1 & 2 above.

maybe my topic can help you a bit: topic smile.gif

for Q1: You will be charge if your GPS application establish online connection from your phone to 'assist' faster connection to satellite or download updated map. Charge will be different according to telco data rate.
Most of the GPS-included phone should have option to turn off the "assistance start" in the GPS-related settings such as 'location service'. To verify whether the phone is offline or no online connection, refer to status bar that whether 'online' status exist or not when you are using the GPS application. If there have no such 'online' status than you are are currently offline and thus using the GPS free of charge.

for Q2: It depends on the application you are using. i roughly separate offline GPS application into two types : prebuild and expandable.
Prebuild means it has been made with bundled map and basically cannot put inside other maps anymore. Expandable means you may put desired maps and choosing which map you will using while starting the application. For example: in my topic, GPSmid prebuild version is prebuild application and we-travel midlet is expandable.

I dun know whether the dedicated GPS user will be charged like monthly fee of just buy the device and free of charge to use it. You may google those device manufacturer and see their charge method.

A1: switch off A-GPS.
A2: GMXT can only support 2 maps at any given 1 point of time. gmapsupp.img and gmapsup2.img (excluding worldwide basemap)
to workaround it, you can insert 2 into device assuming your device has space, and another 2 into the microsdkad. then you might have 4. most
nokias dont have sufficient main memory space so it leaves it back to just 2 inside the microsd.
A3: PND's are free except when there's TMC involved. at this moment, only singapore has TMC and that also not for Garmin. its for Galactio.

on top of the answers given above, you may go to Nokia 5800xm's FAQ page on GPS issues, since you're using 5230 which is similar to 5800xm.

goodluck.

A1: ALL phones using AGPS got approximately 10 sen per use charge by telco. Integrated GPS got no charge for all phones. Meaning, it is the method you use (AGPS or iGPS) and not the phone that incur charges.

A2: Some can & some can't. Nokia Maps allows you to download before you go traveling.

andrewhtf,

I did that before tongue.gif It was fun if you set the tracking on to each second, provided there is still GPS signal at 30k-38k ft high up.

The average plane will cruise at around 900km/h once it reaches its altitude.
Small B737 or A320 about 850+
Jumbo about 900+

There was one time the pilot is making up for lost time during take-off and speeding at 1,000+ sweat.gif

I was wondering since we're nearer to the satellite, shouldn't the gps signal is clearer too? Until i remember that yeah, it's the speed that the gps device fail to catch up with... I was on airasia flight to and fro langkawi.

I think that cannot be done since most of GPS Phone are meant to be use on the phone only. If you really want to do that get yourself a bluetooth GPS like Mobile 10x. Last time I use it on my lappy using Garmin Mobile PC and nRoute.
