I think you need 4 bars higher than average to get a lock. After that, minimum 3 satellites will work already, but no elevation. Elevation needs minimum 4 satellites.

With GMXT, sometimes I can get GPS lock in 5-10 seconds. Sometimes it won't lock at all even after 10 minutes.

I notice it is easier to lock using Nokia Maps. So sometimes I launch Nokia Maps first, lock satellites, then launch GMXT, then close Nokia Maps.

If I remember correctly, N82 GPS antenna is located at the back, above the camera. However, the phone GSM & wifi antenna is located at bottom, below the battery. So it is quite troublesome to hold the phone without blocking/absorbing the RF signal from the palm of your hand.

*
You got the wrong mapsingmap map. You should download the map for GMXT. Not the normal mapsingmap map for Garmin.

Get a dedicated GPS device. Connect your N95 via bluetooth.

anyone tried "Location Messages"...
only recently i discover it usefulness, great stuff!!! smile.gif

Yes, tried it before. I think:
1) Both sides must be using GMXT.
2) Preferably both also similiar h/p device ? As it is sending SMS.
3) Both sides GMXT must turn on ?

Today I installed malfreemap + malfree topo map. Will try whether it looks different or not and also the speed performance or any issues.

Have not tried the camera-speed POI though, so far no alert from it. Federal highway got ?

MFM v1.42 + topo map on N82 v31 with GMXT 5.00.20 testing with Full POI and roads map. Very lag and slow compared to MSM v2.30. I already reach traffic light, and the graphics is still processing and showing me moving 50-100 towards the traffic light. doh.gif Or, I'm at highway and already pass an interchange, it still shows me driving towards the interchange.

Will keep monitor.

Did you install the additional POI in the POI folder?
If yes, try again without those POI.
*
MFM I tick Full Road and POI (default ticked) during installation. Only the speed trap POI in POI folder which exists already since MSM.
hmm.gif

MFM = 67MB+
MSM = 37MB+

Did you select to generate the file for GMXT?
*
Yes, from the MFM exe installer in my PC, I click to generate file for GMXT and ticked above as stated.

MFM = 67MB...i think its already combined wit other map...such as malaysia+indo+singapore..

I did combined with MFM Topo map for the gradient level. Sometimes useful to me. Full time I only need M'sia and S'pore map. Did not manual combine with Indo/Thai/etc. map. hmm.gif

pls advise smile.gif thank you smile.gif

Assume all using authorised (original) Nokia accessories, it should be no problem, except the battery may degrade faster. e.g. The battery may die within 1 year instead of 2 years if you do it frequent, especially when you plug-in and plug-out when you stop, goto toilet break, lunch/dinner, make calls, sms, etc.

Previously I used my Nokia phones as GPRS/EDGE/3G modem on my notebook (USB cable) for 10-20 hours daily (overnight download) for 1-2 years. No problem. Always plug in charger, continuous charge.

Heat will be warm using GPS, but not as hot as using 3G/HSDPA Data download.

OMG..u spent all your money to track via sms & see the plot & also speed  shocking.gif

Actualy to track, plot & checking speed and even altitude, you need not use sms. There are few data logging software available such as Nokia sport..., Race chrono & even garmin mxt itself can record. Unless u mean u wanted to trace the location of your car just like those GPS security system  hmm.gif

Otherwise, it has been ages & track recording is the basic of mapping & also contributed to the detail GPS maps available Today at malfree & also malsing...It has been my weekend hobby as well to record tracklogs, checking my mountain bike riding speed, plotting the data on the maps, checking altitude, and lastly sending any new roads that I encountered during weekend ride to either one of the mapping communities for updating.
*
I tried Nokia Sport from MRR2, then towards Karak. Save the route in N82. Then download into PC. Open up Google Earth. They have a 3D view to replay back the route I drove thumbup.gif and also with the altitude shown.

not really minor. On my 5800 XM it locks to satelitte faster and browsing thru garmin also faster and it dont crash
*
Since ver 5.00.20, locking satellite is faster a bit. But so far, my N82 unit GMXT never crash before (only very slow sometimes), but I only use in portrait mode. However, if locking satellite is too long (>2 min), what I do is close GMXT. Open Nokia Maps, then open GMXT. Once Nokia Maps locks on, GMXT will lock on. Seems like Nokia Maps lock on faster. I have tried with both A-GPS enabled and disabled. Both same.

There 3 method of locking to GPS

Cold Start , Warm Start and A-gps ? Which u are talking?
*
Not sure what you mean by cold/warm start, on device or GMXT or ?

What I do is, switch on phone, stand in the middle of the field, clear sky, no clouds, no trees, no building block.

Set either with/without A-GPS (test two times)
Run GMXT, sometimes it doesn't lock even in 5 minutes.
So, what I do is, exit GMXT.
Then run Nokia Maps.
Before Nokia Maps lock, I run GMXT again.
Then wait. Normally within <1 minute, Nokia Maps will lock and immediately GMXT will lock also.
Then I close Nokia Maps, and navigate with GMXT

I tried both in N82 (with integrated GPS) with A-GPS and without A-GPS. Both same results.

My conclusion: Intermittently, GMXT cannot lock onto satellites by itself even >5 min with my device, but once run Nokia Maps, it is like Assisted-GPS-Software to boost locking.

Added on March 20, 2009, 2:09 pmJust to add:
1) If Nokia Maps can lock, GMXT sure can lock
2) If Nokia Maps cannot lock, GMXT sure cannot lock no matter wait how long
3) If GMXT can lock, Nokia Map can lock ? -> Never happen before, always Nokia Maps lock first laugh.gif
4) If GMXT cannot lock, Nokia Map = ? -> Never happen before also.

i dunno what you are talking about. Because i uninstall my nokia maps already

Cold start u open the GPS window u see no satelitte

Warm start is u connected to GPS before same day or previous day. It already have the GPS location of yesterday. So it can connect faster compare to COLD because it need to slowly find.
*
If yesterday, I am at Location A: SS2 (GPS locked and connected) and close GMXT there.

Today. when I open GMXT at Location B: KLCC, the map still show me in SS2. Have to wait until it locked the satellites again, then it jump to KLCC. -> I only use it this way all the time. This is where the problem happen that GMXT sometimes cannot lock satellites no matter which Location A, B, C, etc.

Is this consider cold/warm ?

Note: No shutdown/reboot device in between. Just Exit/Close GMXT only and confirm not running in background.

well even if i give u my SW.UNL file its not going to work.

Example, I got this Garmin with SW.UNL in this 2GB memory card. So I transfer the SW.UNL along with my Garmin software to another memory card where I am going to use it with the SAME phone and it wont work. If you plug 2GB memory card to another phone then the Garmin will work like original although different phone.

SW.UNL is locked to MEMORY CARD but not PHONE
*
Wrong also tongue.gif E.g. I got this SW.UNL in my 2GB memory card. Then I upgrade to 8GB, and do a copy all (including system and hidden) using my PC. I plug the 8GB into the same N82 and it works. smile.gif

If your v5.00.00 is licensed, Garmin provides free patch/upgrades for minor-release, hence should not have problem to upgrade to v5.00.40

Dear gps Sifu
Wanna ask how to use garmin to show the shortest route.. My garmin seem to guide me using the longer route than the usual 1 i always take.. Is there a way to remember the route on garmin and ask it  to guide us later?
*
Goto Garmin settings. There are many things configurable. Browse and try it. You can set the shortest route, best route, using highway, no toll, etc.

Best route may not be shortest distance route, but allow you to drive on road/highway rather than narrow bumpy kampung road.

I think GMXT is free only if you have external Garmin GPS device to pair with your mobile/pda/etc. Otherwise, if you use in-built GPS on phone, you need to purchase GMXT software.

No *ahem* or *cough* here.

FYI, latest MFM v1.57 and MFM-Lite v1.57.

Both release today (11 May 2009) rclxms.gif

I recall MFM is a weekly release, and MFM-Lite is bi-weekly release. I'm not promoting MFM, but all I've got to say is a very good job to MFM and thank you, especially antyong. notworthy.gif
