I will begin this thread with the GPS application i found: GPSmid homepage preloaded maps
Recently i had bought a SE W995 and satisfied overall, but i dun like to use the Google Maps and Wayfinder Navigator which is bundled with the HP because both of them required online connection for them to operate: extra fee will be charge according to the transferred data rate unless unlimited connection plan had been ordered. Eventually i found GPSmid and tested it in some place.
The result is consider good for a free GPS application: convenient and easy to use, although the map is not new and might not accurate in some places. Here is those steps (W995 for this example, some steps might be different according to phone model)
Features:
Tachometer, way-points, destination calculator.
PROs:
FREE, a lot of functions, easy to use, expandable maps(for pro-users)
CONs:
Maps is not updated regularly, may facing some bugs for certain phone models,
Supporting HP:
Almost any handphones that have GPS and JAVA supported
Instructions:
Before install:
1)go to menu>>>>location service>>>>settings>>>>Assisted start and choose "Never" (This is required if wish to AVOID data connection charge)
2)enable GPS by choosing "Enable GPS". Skip this step if you had already enabled it
3)go back to "Location service" and choose "Status info", than choose the "connection status". Than go outside to any OPEN AREA with your phone, walk around and check whether it is 'searching' or 'connected'. It will eventually show "connected" after it had connected with those satellite. (Open area is required since some obstacles like rooftop will block the satellite signal and render GPS application useless.)
4)remember the spot where your phone is able to connect to GPS satellite as you might wish to try the application after installed it.
5)Download the installer file from those website, send it to your HP *(choose the GPSmid installer from here) Normally your phone will automatically install it.
After installation successful:
1)Quit the GPSmid (I assume most of you are still stay inside your house until this step, and there is not a good place to use any GPA application anyway)
2)Go to the previous spot with your phone and check the GPS connectivity by "connection status". If 'connected' than proceed to step (3).
3)Start the GPSmid again and choose "YES" if it asking for permission such as "Allow the application to use location service"
4)After done step (3), you will see a map which should show your current position (some places might not be stated clear enough if the place is some sort of 'ulu-ulu' place such as villages and rural area)
5)If step (4) succeed, than you may try out other functions like other GPS application/software.
Done!!!
It is best to try the software yourself and find out the best way(s) to use it. Please forgive my grammar mistake if got any since my English is no good. Feel free to post any other suggestions.
Added on September 7, 2010, 11:17 pmNow is the second free GPS application: We-travel Midlet homepage downloads
This is actually the very 1st GPS application i had tried for my W995. But eventually i had abandoned it because it is a little complicated for me
Supporting HP:
Almost any handphones that have GPS and JAVA supported
For its PROs, it has more features and functions than GPSmid, yet it also support plug-ins and tools. It is free and have many supported maps, voice-guided direction included as well. It also support multiple maps, means that you can put maps in the same application and choose desired map within the applications (in order to utilize this feature, please open the we-travel midlet files inside your handphone after installed it and check the "maps" folder for instructions)
For its CONs, it doesn't offer direct search, instead it offer POI (Point of Interest) oriented search, which make it cumbersome (since it is intended for tourists, it might be a good feature for those tourists which is not familiar to the particular country/places).
And the maps seems like stick to one way instead of changing view according to the direction i am heading for, simply make it confusing sometimes.
Basically the steps for installing this GPS application is almost the same as the POST 1. But the way to use it as a navigator is different vastly:
inside the We-travel Midlet
menu>>>navigate to:
Street: That is recommended to use "search nearby" option as some street/road name is not included inside the map.
POI destinations/POI actual: inside the POI Groups, "select all" is highly recommended since we are most likely to increase the possibilities of finding the desired result unless you are advanced user or wish to avoid confusion.
POI city: Both statements for "Street" and "POI destinations/POI actual" apply to this section
***NOTE: Those POIs options will tend to LAGGING your phone for a while if you select many of them. It is normal and all you need to do is wait until it load finish.***
Conclusion: A good GPS applications but not so convenient to use.
