Haloo, i wanna post here too. I got a female and male WW from my best friend.. When they r 3weeks old, their mummy n daddy suddenly cannibalised one of their brother.. So my friend doesno't know what to do.. Since i have breed hamsters b4, i asked him to seperate = end up i have to take care for him!! haha..

So i have been taking care since dat day until i see the male chasing the female = mating kot!! so i end up seperate the male back to my friend!

Just having a female so pity, so i ask from another friend to give me a male.. so i can breed her.. Now she has 6 pups dat r 10days old d.. Yea, i seperate the male d.. Later when pups r older, males will live with dad, females to be remain with mommy.. i got 3 boys n 3 gurls.. hehe..
*
am I reading this correctly? cannibalized???

Yes hamster will eat their young.

Female moms will eat their babies if threaten from a predator or the male hamster.

If I remember correctly that the male will eat the babies too but can't remember why.

In pet shops you will get to see hamster eating dead hamster if you are lucky. This could be due to insufficient food for all hamsters in the tanks.

Hi everyone, I'm still new in this hamster thread as well as keeping hamsters. I got something here to suggest, but first of all I need to beg for you all not flame me or whatever... notworthy.gif

I read lotz of your argument between "say yes to smoothies" and "say no to smoothies" camps, and I tried google a some sites and found out really a lot of sites mentioned do not feed fruits to certain breed of hamsters. So, the fact of feeding fruits or not, is quite obvious in this case.

Same thing goes to nezu's smoothie. Why is every one say it's good and excellent? Becoz lotz of ppl bought and saw their hamster grow up pretty fast. That's why it's good.

While we don't really know 100% of the whole recipe of the smoothie, I think nezu is the one and only person that can complete this task: Why don't come out another flavor of smoothie, which contain not so many fruits and sugary content that can make everyone happy? For instance, if you go to buy some fruit jam in the supermarket, you can see some of those labeled as "Consumable by Diabetes Patient" or so, why don't you do the same thing as well. As most of us treat our hamster as human. (I did talk to them and lecture them sometimes... smile.gif). And the most important thing, I think most of us believe in one thing -> "Better be safe than sorry"

For those who almost want to start a flame on me now:
Why is nezu come out with this smoothie at the first place? Becoz she took many ppl advice and start distribute it instead of using it alone. And now I hope nezu can consider my suggestion as well at this moment.

Thank you for not flaming... smile.gif

i'm not sure about the male eating the babies, but i'm sure about the male fighting with the babies, cos it happened to me last time.. after the babies are weaned, i tried to introduce the males with the father.. but the father attacked them, cos they dont know each other.. so, its almost impossible to introduce an adult hamster with another hamster of the same sex..

regarding eating dead hamster in petshops, i wouldnt say it's becos there is insufficient food.. cos my fren forgot to feed his hamsters for 3 days, and both look sickly & weak but didnt eat each other.. i would believe that the hamsters in petshops died from fighting, and it's their natural instinct to clear the carcass, which is why they eat the dead hamsters..

what's Insectivore-Fare?

Hi Nezu, I used to have my two hams running on the safari wheel in their safari cages, It does make a fair bit of noise when they run fast. Like you said, the kong kong sound. If they run on slower speeds, then it's quiet.
*
u can try putting vaseline at the wheel.it'll be more quiet. juz make sure ur ham hams dont try to eat it. i dont think its safe to be consumed rite

Insectivore-Fare can be found in jtl's thread. It's meant for inserts eater. not cheap though.

Vaseline is not soluble, but to human is not poisonous, not sure on hammies. Last time i used to put it on my lips when it's dry.

i won't say they WILL fight la. to say they WILL fight is like saying put together SURE confirm fighting.

from what i observed (from 1st hand experience) is that it depends on their character.

i have 4 males staying together fine (yes, as in right now).

in fact from my experience, the father (A) end up whacking all his male off-springs. but another senior male (B) stays with the off-spring of (A) well, just that he'll occasionally go kacau them a bit but certainly not fighting. (B) is of a gentle nature, (A) was aggressive and defensive.

i also have seen females that just can't live together.

a lot of different encounters. for my case, i let the male stay with the babies. they grew up together.

thought all would be fine already.......... then suddenly donno why is like chaos la. suddenly the father like to whack the rest.

so no choice, seperate the father (A). the babies put with their "uncle" which is another male (B), more senior than (A) and no problem at all.

and here's the strange thing. when (A) was small, (A) could live with (B) for a while and after that it's fight. when both were adult and i introduced them, wahhh damn serious fight, until i have to seperate them. but as i mentioned, i intro (B) to (A)'s kids, all fine. rclxub.gif

hamsters won't die of insufficient food unless it's really really really many days without food. 3 days without food is nothing IMO, animals aren't like humans. we don't eat for few hours - hungry already. animals on the other hand (being from the wild and carry their NATURAL instinct) can go on many days without food.

Actually I agree that it's insufficient food or nutrients. This happened in Pet Family. I saw 2 syrians gang up on 1 syrian and when I tried to remove the 3 syrian by chasing them away (after opening the stupid lid I found out I wasn't tall enough so I have to quickly scout for a stool) and by the time I got them off, they already killed the poor hammie and are tearing into his insides and eating.

@goldfries : hmm.gif I dunno much about WWs since I don't have experience with them but from what I heard, it's not that they will fight, but chances of them fighting is awfully high so better be safe than sorry lor IMO.

It's pricey because it's imported stuff for SG but hamster can consume also. It contains not only meallies but other high protein insects as well. Really 'smells good' blush.gif I gave it to all my babies, unfortunately most of them don't really like it included my picky Fat Tailed Gerbil sweat.gif So I think I'll still go for mealies and tofu for protein.
