QUOTE(hikari @ Aug 31 2008, 12:06 AM)
actually i'm considering FX520 and LX3.. bcos both have manual controls but i'm torn for the differences below..
LX3 over FX520
1) FX520 dun have manual focus... unlike LX3.. but FX520 still have aperture and shutter priority settings..
2) LX3 got faster lens
3) LX3 macro is 1cm compared to 5cm of FX520
FX520 over LX3
1) size.. LX3 altho in paper is slim, but they nv take into account the lens yet (correct me if i'm wrong)..
2) price.. if not mistaken, price of LX3 is RM300-400 more than FX520
3) design.. LX3 more retro, and i prefer FX520 design.. but design is something i dun really mind actually LOL
4) more zoom in FX520 (25-125mm).. altho LX3 got 24mm, i think the tele is pathetic at 60mm

end of the day i might still bring the camera to concerts/events etc which i need to zoom.
i would like to know how it would impact my photography experience.. i like to learn how to take photos that's y i think creative control over aperture/shutter is important to me, i'm not sure how much manual/auto focus will impact me.. i'm not very rich and hence price is something which i'll consider thoroughly.. and i have this belief that LX3 is not very portable (not pocket size) compared to FX520.. if it's not a camera that i would carry evrywhere, how else can i take more pictures?! that's why i didnt consider DSLR or SLR-like cameras (e.g. pana FZ28, sony H50 etc)..
another thing is about ISO, i think the noise level is aceptable until 400 for both but FX520 had it worse in ISO800 and above.. but how often do we use this high ISO settings? is it really that important?
can someone pls advise me?? being in a LX3 thread, i hope u guys can be more objective in helping me with an answer

Personal opinions:
1) Camera features: Basically from what i see, if u r really interested in knowing (or getting seriously into) photography, I suggest you get the LX3 (or something similar with aperture, shutter and manual focus controls). These makes a lot of difference in terms of camera performance and helps bring out the creativity in you (by manually determining how a photo should look).
2) Size:The LX3 is thick (even if u considered the lens, u still have a lens cap). So trousers pockets are out of the question. But it can still fit into a jacket pocket. But personally, I never put my camera into my pants (even my old FX01). I always handhold my cams, so the extra size makse not much of a difference to me.
3) Price:If budget is a really big constraint for you, then go for the FX520. But for me, If I have that little extra to spend, I'll spend it to get something better. I am not thinking of changing my cam within 1 or 2 years so, if that little extra spent can give me something that lasts, why not?
4) Zoom:Handheld, anything more than 3x zoom for me is pointless. Your handshake will make it virtually impossible to take a clear picture. So unless u r planning on using a tripod very often, the 5x in the FX520 is not something very useful. Some advice from our fellow Lowyat forumers: Take the LX3 if u wanna take photos of babes, take the FZ28 (18x zoom) if you wanna take photos of monkeys and birds.

After using the LX3 for 2 weeks, I believe that the 2.5x zoom is enough for most applications.
5) ISO:Don't expect the ISO performance of the LX3 to be anywhere close to DSLR quality. It is
STILL a compact. Anything more than ISO-400 is still bad. But since the LX3 comes with a faster lens, you basically are able to get brighter, clearer pics at lower settings (e.g. With the same shutter speed and aperture, you can get a clear shot with the LX3 at ISO-400 whereas you might need to use ISO-800 on the FX520, which is very noisy).
Hope my noobie comments can help you
It all comes down to your personal preference really.
But of course, I hope to see another LX3 member soon though.
hahahah....

I need to find a suitable pouch for my LX3.
Right now I am using a really really big kahuna of a pouch (free gift during purchase).
Although the pouch is Panasonic, it doesn't quite fit the cam.
And the pouch is hard cover, making it look much much bigger than it should be.
Personally, I prefer soft pouches.
One of my frens had a Panasonic soft pouch (for the FX01), but I can't seem to find that kind of pouch anymore.
Any recommendations or suggestions?
Thanks!
