Only one - PS3. The cheapest and most upgradeable player. No such thing as a budget standalone bd player.

Nope, cannot internal decoding, an amp with lossless audio decoding is needed. It's brother, BD50 can, but not yet released, said to be this month.

The analogue outs can send out lossless, but only PCM (only 5.1), not DTS-HD MA/Dolby TrueHD. If it can't decode them, how can it convert them to analogue.

But buying there you'll get proper warranty and stuffs. When Sony officially release here, it will be expenive too, I'm guessing around RM2k.

Why Sony Malaysia haven't launch it here still baffles me. They put it in their Sony Styles but with a card saying "Not For Sale, Demonstration Purposes Only". doh.gif

Should avoid Sammy BD players at all cost, it takes forever to load movies with Java menus like AVP2, POTC, etc. Some movies will skip and out of sync. They have not fixed the problem till now.

Safest bet as of now is Panny's BD30 player but if you can wait, BD50 will be out soon.

Just the truth bro. Until now there is no player that can even beat PS3 for disc loading time. And there are a lot more advantage than any current BD players right now.

I'm not a gamer, I also prefer standalone, one thing I'm longing is the bitstreaming capability (though not that big a deal actually). No doubt someday we'll see better and cheaper standalones in future, and I'll be the first to buy it. nod.gif

Hi,

I donno .. most of de reviews compare it favourably to de ps3 but in de US they are abt de same price so its a fair comparison.. over here de ps3 is cheaper than de bd30, so its unfair to compare .. ppl assume when u pay more..

Hv been trawlin thru avs's bd30 threads(200+pgs..) n apparently it got sum bugs too.. wonder wat version our local units are??

SACD boleh, but only for 80GB and 60GB (discontinued) versions. No support for DVD-Audio though. biggrin.gif

Those guys who purchase in Malaysia, the game shop brought it in unofficially from Singapore, Japan or US. So the warranty is based on which country it's originally from. wink.gif

The PS3 models that support SACDs, is it via software or it has a dedicated DSD DAC for SACDs. My friend's Sony HTIB around RM1300 plus supports SACD. I got shocked when I saw the SACD logo there. Too bad SACD softwares are still lacking in the market.

So, let's say for 80" screen size, you need to sit 16 feet or closer to see the 1080p benefit. biggrin.gif

Let me correct my earlier post, with your big screen, you can already see the benefit of full HD, so you guys better get a full HD projector. tongue.gif

good news . BD lovers. Sony chops another $100 of the their PS3 and only one model will be sold once the current 40GB models are sold out.

This 80 model however doesnt support PS2 games. This is a non issue if you want it for BD movies only smile.gif

Honestly 80GB is not enuff as a number of games require mandatory installation, I've upgraded mine to 250GB. I'll be happy with Sony adds PS2 backward compatibility, the card reader and SACD back to the existing models, there's no reason for them to remove these. Who wants a stripped down version, rite?

80GB not necessary lah, 1GB is all they need for BD Live and from existing reviews, the BD Live feature is far from perfect yet. Hopefully, they'll put it to good use one day and not just for streaming upcoming trailers from the servers or to play some lame online games.

Most new AVRs now can decode DTS-HD Master Audio onboard. This S350 can bitstream it, so no worrries there (I actually prefer bitstreaming actually).

I would really consider this if I see reviews say that it load BDs faster than PS3, and retails at lower than RM2k locally (fat hope, maybe can get it from SG).

Local announcement here:

Is that from the S350 manual? It doesn't bitstream HBR audio? I thought I read somewhere that it does.

Then I can't consider this model. Panasonic BD30 is still the best choice now.

Now let's see how it compares between Sony S550 and Panasonic BD50.

yes page 62 of the S350 manual. some people want my head because i pointed that that Sony manual says bitstream support for DTS HD and DTS HD Master is DTS Core only - and pointed out the same S350 manual from Sony!

i just dont think its logical to sell player specs that is sooo similar on S350 ($400) and on S550 ($500) . I would say the S550 will either decode HD and HD MA or bitstream non core only HD and HD MA.

Those claimed to be pirated BD is b**lshit. We have discussed it before. You can play this so-called BD in DVDP. So, it aint Blu.

Many of us here are using PS3 as BD player. It didnt have any problem (touch wood). But, there are some forummers having problem with the lens after using it to watch DVD occasionally.

Like bro Htkaki said, it's just a DVD9. The source could be BD, ripped and then burned as DVD format. The resolution will still be 480p, no matter what. It may look nicer then other DVDs, more colourful, little bit sharper. But that's it, you're actually losing a lot of data, so you're losing the details.

About PS3, you asked that at at shops like HN, etc, right? If I'm the owner, when people come asking for a PS3 as BD player, would I encourage them to go buy it elsewhere because you don't have it? Of course, I would say bad things about it and ask them to by the standalone BD players in my shop instead.

Lens breaking down on PS3 is quite rare actually. I think every optical player have the risk of lens failure. If you give good care and play BDs normally, there's nothing to worry about.

Avoid playing DVDs. Getting from A to B on BD is easier than on DVD, the motor and lens have to move faster on DVD. I never play DVDs on my PS3, a dedicated upscaling DVD player for that (existing).

But, considering that I only use to play DVD-9 disc.....well...upconversion DVD suit me better....

By the way, how much the Blue-ray disc normally you purchase....normally...cost 130 - 140 per pcs... not affortable la.......quite expensive.... hmm.gif

PS3 will consider in next budget....cause...not suitable for DVD....I can't afford to buy both...my wife will kill me later blush.gif

If DVD, then DVD with HDMI will do. Plenty of choices out there.

BD is abt RM80 - RM100+ via Amazon and it depends on titles and any promo.

I can only think of two titles only, the German release of T2 and Alone In The Dark are both in DTS-MA on hd-dvds. Dolby TrueHD is more common on HD-DVDs than DTS-MA unlike for BDs, all types of audio codecs are used for the movies.

no need to source blu-ray.com when my source is the Sony S350 Blu-ray Disk player manual. It says the player bitstreams dts-hd and dts-hd ma but DTS Core only. And plus dun overstate Core only bitstream.

According to DTS' white paper - the Core track in dts-hd and dts-hd ma = 48hz sampling frequency and up to 1.5mb data rate. dts-hd ma sampling rate is over 100hz while the data rate is several times WAY OVER 1.5mb.

so basically on DTS Core only hd-ma bitstreaming, you are basically getting DTS Core while your receiver's dts-hd ma diod is lighted.

We all know what DTS core is lah.. We've been hearing that from DTS-HD MA tracks on PS3 since before firmware 2.35. Nothing new to us. biggrin.gif

This simply means the S350 CANNOT BITSTREAM DTS-HD MA (if the manual says so). Whether it bitstream DTS core or not is irrelevant. icon_rolleyes.gif

So the best choice right now still Panasonic DMP-BD30. nod.gif

Why 1400? Its only basic profile 1.0. I want at least profile 1.1 but upgradable to 2.0 later. Sammy 1500 already out and with profile 1.1

U r rite. Tax is based on total cost plus shipping. So if u opt for expensive shipping, ur tax will increase also.

clothing from Abercrombie.com is not that heavy tongue.gif

of a nearly RM1,000 purchase - charged nearly RM200. FedEx paid for me. I paid the fedex guy at my door step.

if the tax is inclusive of shipping then - need not worry - use Maybank American Express Global E-shope service. Get them to charge the shipping fee on your American Express card.

I think i want to try that one out. more choices of online retailer - cheaper - product and shipping price oso wink.gif

Looks like Panny BD30 is the way to go so far. PS3 can't bitstream and Sony 350 bitstream core only. Wonder if I can get it cheaper than RM2999 without having to opt buying overseas.

Better wait for BD50 since it will be out pretty soon.

Most new players now can bitstream HBR audio. So the most worrying thing is the disc loading time. If they can even match PS3's, then I will be seriously consider a standalone. But then, I only will buy it it costs lower than RM2k.

PS: How can RM2030 is cheaper than PS3? hmm.gif

Yeah I'm waiting for BD50. Not because I want to buy it but was hoping the price of BD30 goes down a bit when BD50 come out laugh.gif
Anyway, I set my mind on BD30 already unless Sony suddenly come out with firmware for S350 that can do full bitstream and not just core only.

Express Delivery = $40
Standard Delivery = $18

the first price is Express followed by Standard. Ex colleague tried standard (bought HTPC casing) said Standard enuf liau. But he bought casing , and we are talking about BD player. Anyhow the express delivery is still cheaper than bhphotos' shipping charges tongue.gif

oh btw - they also clear the custom for you and charge on your American Express card (maybe need to add note on order) i forgot - maybe automatic tongue.gif

BD30K = 7.3 lbs (3.3 kg) shipping =

Global e-shope = US$62.49 (express) US$29.25 (standard)

bhphotos.com shipping =

International Priority Mail (10-14 Days Delivery) = $116.00
UPS Worldwide Saver (3-5 Business Days Delivery) = $190.45
FedEx Priority (3-5 Business Day Delivery) = $297.00
International Express Mail (5-7 Days Delivery) = $121.00

What I mean is that the PS2 was extremely sensitive. Some DVD can load, sum cannot load, scratched DVD oso cannot read, that kinda thing. I had to go buy a buffalo DVD player in the end. PS3 good at loading all BDs?

U misunderstood my Q oredi. I asked if the PS3 is good for BD as in loading all kinda BDs including scratched n slightly warped discs kinda thing. Last time PS2 was extremely sensitive, all DVD had to b in pristine condition or it wont load. Sumtimes even pristine DVDs cudn load.

Hello,

I've been around these threads for some time now but have not posted before.

Some of you would know me since I purchased some BDs from you.

Panasonic BD50 just got reviewed. Looks good. Not sure when it will hit Malaysia or how much..

I wonder BD-ROM drives for a pc will load as fast as a PS3?

Is it worth buying the Sammy BD-P1400?

I'm eyeing the S350 now. Heard the loading time is much faster than BD30, and on some titles almost the same as PS3. thumbup.gif

The S300 (and any other old models actually) is known for that.

The S350 got encouraging reviews not only for loading time, but even PQ and AQ. And unlike BD30, it's got ethernet port and firmware upgradable to Profile 2.0 (BD-Live).

It's not a must, but if you can have it why not? With BD30 it's almost certain you'll not have it.

BD-Live is a feature where you can access extra contents from the internet. Your player will need to be connected to the internet. Again, I only tried once with my MIB BD on the PS3, just to see how it works. Not a must, that's for sure. As I am more into the movie itself than extra features.

PQ is a must la, why go for HD if the PQ is bad. tongue.gif

Player do the decoding dude then output to amp in PCM so I think different player must have different SQ la. Amp receive the PCM signal and just send to speakers...amplify the signal along the way and maybe add post processing effect like the sci-fi mode on yammy amp.

That's another story bro, I also prefer bitstream. The flow diagram just to show how it works from the player to the speakers and where DAC is involved, bitstream or otherwise. biggrin.gif

Still depends on a lot of things, the combinations of equipment, etc, even same player could sound differently with different decoding (not equipment) setups. But between the three flow diagrams, there could be slight difference to each of them. Also depends if you ears can hear the difference or not. tongue.gif

Usually analgue inputs to the AVR, there can't be anymore processing by the AVR, only amplifying to power up the speakers.

Theoretically, S.A.M.A. laugh.gif tongue.gif

Should be the same, it's the AVR that's doing the job.

The only different should be the PQ, because both were done by the players. tongue.gif

I never said that. My flow diagram again just to show how it works. If you bitstream to same AVR, should sound the same la, because whatever player you use, they're not the one that do the decoding.

But this true to bitstream only. If PCM it's the player that does the decoding.

Oh, OK. blush.gif

You mean the player doing the decoding? It's possible to be different, because each player got their own decoding/unzipping chip, if it's the same chip, could be the same. biggrin.gif

Another thing, for the same one internally decoding player, it could sound differently between sending via HDMI or RCA analogue. This because if you use HDMI, the player sends in digital, so the the DAC is done by the AVR. If you use the analogue outs, the DAC already done by the player, and for analogues, the cable quality also play an important role. Good or bad DAC will produce sound differently. nod.gif

ok, heres the thing, 3 types of HD audio now rite?
the uncompressed, trueHD and DTS HD MA
so basically for users of HD amp, would prefer the amp to decode the later 2 so tat the magic words pop up

in this case, will audio still be a factor wen choosing a BD player? as long its able to bitstream

my guess is, PQ would be the main difference

Correct. biggrin.gif

For audio quality, through bitstreaming, any player should just be the same with the same HT setup (AVR/speakers/cables/etc).

Internal decoding players are more expensive, so if you have AVR with onboard HD audio decoding, don't buy those players. tongue.gif

And yup, PQ and loading time. biggrin.gif

If you have Maybank Amex card, you can use the service from ComGateway. They will provide a US address for you, and then they will ship it back to you. You only pay them the shipping cost, I believe the shipping to US address is free.

I've calculated this last week, if with free Amazon shipping to US, total cost including cheapest shipping method back to here, and 15% + 10% tax, it will cost around RM1.5k. But with current USD rate, could be little bit higher.

RX, can I borrow your card? brows.gif

just checked the weight of S350, its 10 pounds,

gonna cost RM280-300 just for the shipping charges from US to M'sia...

S350 354.14USD / RM1168.66 + free shipping within US + RM300 (US to M'sia) = RM1468.62

whistling.gif

customs 10%?

the only thing refrain me to go ahead is budget biggrin.gif so stick with PS3 for now. Alas, if got budget, definitely go to projector 1st.

If you have Maybank Amex card, you can use the service from ComGateway. They will provide a US address for you, and then they will ship it back to you. You only pay them the shipping cost, I believe the shipping to US address is free.

You should be able to set 720p or 1080i on the S350, just like your Pioneer DV600 (I'm using DV400).

Normally panels with 1080p have better specs, so you're not paying more just for 1080p. That was why I settled for a 1080p panel because of the better constrast and other features too. It's a win-win situation at the end whether 1080p is important or not but to me, 1080p/24fps is important if you're into BDs and HD-DVDs.

*
No, it's a different panel altogether. The full HD ones have a better panel with a very dark and non-reflective coating so the blacks are pretty plasma like, even my friend who owns a Pioneer Plasma Kuro said so when he came to my house. Of course, he is aware that Plasma can't be repaired and secondly, the brightness will decrease after a few years gradually.

Current Bravias will only spot a 10-bit panel for full HD models and the 10-bit panel is not a marketing gimmick, try playing Soul Calibur IV on it or BBC's Planet Earth BD, you'll be amazed with the colours, no banding at all.

PS3 is no doubt the best BD player out there but sadly, it's not a green machine, it consumes about 200 watts under load whereas normal dedicated BD players will only consume 30 watts or so. Since our TNB bills sudah naik, it will be costly to use a PS3 to watch DVDs and BDs non-stop. Sadly, dedicated blu-ray players are limited to just a few models and their loading times, although improved, still can't beat a normal dvd player. I prefer those players that can play the movie instantly without waiting. Of course, I have to use my PS3 temporarily to watch my BD movies. Damn ....... need 200 watts just to play a BD movie. doh.gif

but wat about the high wattage subs and the power hungry amplifiers(always on), and the lcd(always on)/plasma(always on)/projector.. all are power hungry.. the ps3 is just a marginal increase to the total.. haha but i did read that the ps3 consumes as much electricity as a fridge.. hmm but then dont we leave our fridge on 24/7 anyways?

Well, PS3 consumes 200 watts, my LCD 40' consumes 230 watts, etc. Something is definitely not right here, why need 200 watts to play a movie? It's just a games console and not even a Denon. doh.gif That's my arguement here. Anyway, any percentage saved on power consumption will have an impact on our bills. Anyway, I'll still get a dedicated blu-ray, as long as it can bitsream everything and has good loading times plus below RM3K, it's fine with me. Just waiting for more choices now and sadly, most of the models selling here are all outdated ones.

*
hmm if the rumors are true, ps3 may release a slim ps3. hopefully that one uses less power and bla bla bla.. hmm i wonder if its due to the power used that the ps3 can load the disc fast and all the stability and all that... cuz.. if u compare to PC right.. PC with higher watt psu will be very stable and smooth... can power up hungy gfx card, sound card, processor, etc etc.. maybe thats why the ps3 is power hungry.. for stability..

/ps i nvr off my 550w pc

edit -
http://www.smartplanet.com/news/tech/10000...ets-greener.htm - states that 200watts was for the 1st gen ps3. the one we're using now (65nm processor) is using 135w

With the right specs, I will only consider a standalone if it costs cheaper than RM2k.

And I can actually get the Sony BDP-S350 for lower than RM2k actually, the only thing stopping me now is my empty wallet. cry.gif

I hope they can include a dedicated scaler for standard dvds and 1080i BD contents, concerts or even documentaries. Most dedicated players can't deinterlace 1080i properly. If it's below RM2K, it's even better but have a bad feeling it won't happen that soon in Malaysia unless we have China made BD players flooding the market with super cheapo price.

Of course kena ketam.. But even after that it's still below RM2k. Check the previous page.

The price for the Sony BDP-S350 now is $346.50 only, calculate the shipping (by weight) at the ComGateway site, add the 10+15% taxes/fee. Still below RM2k. nod.gif

hmm about this 10+15% tax.. like some may know.. brunei has only a 5% tax for this things.. and if u digg dipper, brunei and msia is in a AFTA pack.. with a 0-5% tax for all goods purchased coming in and out of the country.. so. what if, order to brunei.. 5% tax, repackage, then ship to msia.. skip the whole 10+15% bs.. can o not?

there at least three china mari models in the USA. Sylvania, Magnavox and another made for Best Buy. $299 and $349. The whole purpose of having BD is so that CE can sell them at an expensive price to get plenty of $$$$$. If they are to sell the player cheap, might as well as sell DVD player. Cheaper to make less cost!

If you have Maybank Amex card, you can use the service from ComGateway. They will provide a US address for you, and then they will ship it back to you. You only pay them the shipping cost, I believe the shipping to US address is free.

Up to you bro, the retail price is $399, now at $352 with free US shipping. That's already a good deal for the Americans, and even more for us when the cheapest BD player available is RM2999. If your budget is below RM1.5k, then it's just impossible I think.

Actually, with the service, you can buy from any online retailers that ships to US addresses. Not necessarily Amazon only.

S300 can be bought at RM2,700 from Hi-Fi shops but then, it's still pricey. Guess they're clearing this model before selling the S350. It's pretty obvious.

Apparently, Samsung has decided to sneak out their latest player, the BD-P2550, onto store shelves without the usual fanfare. It appears to be a variation on the previously announced BD-P2500, though its difficult to tell what, if any, the differences may be. Early reports on our forum indicate that it is a BonusView player that will receive a BD-Live update at a future date.

Other standout features include a HQV processor and 7.1 analog outs. Though early specs indicated support for decoding DTS-HD Master Audio, it appears that feature has been dropped from the final product. The player is available to ship today, from Best Buy, for $499.

Specifications:

If you have the new gen AVR, you don't need a BD player with internal HD decodings and multi-channel analogue outs. All needed is HD audio bitstream via HDMI 1.3a. Then make sure reviews saying good PQ and fast startup/disc loading. nod.gif

BD-Live depends on your preference, to me not important, just online features. But no harm to have it of course, if the price is right.

My choice is still S350, posted the Samsung just as news, appropriate for this thread. biggrin.gif

Yep M2U. Don't even have to log in. You fill in the form online then submit. After that you need to fax them a few stuff. I already got Maybank Visa so I don't need to fax anything. Customer service just call me later for verification. I think I got approval less than a week tongue.gif

Added on August 24, 2008, 9:28 amPioneer Unveils Ultimate Blu-ray Player

http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=1700

Pioneer has dropped their latest Blu-ray Disc player, and this one promises to be the one that will leave the PlayStation 3 in the dust. For $2200, you can pick up a Pioneer BDP-09FD, which they are promising is not only the best BD-Live Blu-ray Disc player on the market, but also the best DVD and CD player as well, meeting the single machine needs of home theater aficionados.

Besides having the ability to decode all high definition audio codecs, it also features a 16-bit video processor. The case is a combination of aluminum and steel with special vibration reducing feet. Pioneer recommends using the analog outs instead of HDMI for audio - each one has its own separate DAC - but they throw in two HDMI ports just in case you might need them.

Pioneer is also promising jitter-free CD playback and the best DVD upscaling available. So why would anyone spend this much money on a Blu-ray player? Simple. Its the best. And for those looking for the best of CD, DVD, and Blu-ray playback, this is the only option all in one case.

Callmevil, using the 7 channel analogue outs, all you need is a power amp. The sub out connect directly to the subwoofer.

If using AVR, connect them to your multi-channel analogue inputs. With this connection, your AVR only act as a power amp and channel them to the speakers, no more DAC as it's already been done by the player. And be sure to use best quality cables with gold-plated contacts. thumbup.gif

PS: My 80GB PS3 can play SACD, bought it for only RM1.8k. tongue.gif

Source: http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=1720

Sony has announced that they will release a new ES-line Blu-ray Disc player promising the ultimate high definition experience to consumers. The Sony BDP-S5000ES will be BD-Live enabled and feature numerous Sony technologies in order to ensure it provides the best audio and video processing of Blu-ray discs.

On the video side, it will feature an HD Reality Enhancer which continually analyzes the video stream to sharpen edges and reduce film grain. It also increases the 8-bit video depth to 14-bit for better color representation. Additional, the player will feature Sony's Super Bit Mapping which smooths color tones to provide the best video possible over an HDMI connection.

For audio, it will feature decoding and bit streaming of all audio formats. The player will have a high-stability Precision Drive HD transport mechanism in the center position, an ultra-rigid frame and beam chassis to reduce vibration and a low-leakage R-Core transformer - all ensuring the best audio performance. To further increase performance, the audio board has been separated from the video board to remove any electronic noise from transferring to the 7.1 analog outs.

As a BD-Live player, it will come with a Ethernet connection and 1GB flash drive. And like the Sony BDP-S350 and upcoming BDP-S550, it will feature the PlayStation 3's XMB menu system.

No pricing or release date has been announced at this time.

Source: http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=1718

While Denon's booth at CEDIA will feature their existing line of Blu-ray Disc players/transports - the Panasonic-based DVD-2500BT and DVD-3800BD - the company is currently planning to release a new "flagship" model by March of next year. While no word was given as to what improvements may be incorporated into the player, it is widely expected to be Denon's first BD-Live player.

We'll have more as it becomes available.

Maybe it doesn't apply to the BD-30 models selling here as we're using a different firmware than the models sold overseas. Well, we can ask Htkaki to try and let us know the outcome.

Perhaps we need those China made BD players to flood the market first, then those branded players will be priced more reasonably. Some competition is good anyway. I'm waiting for that to happen.

It took quite a while for China made DVD players to start flooding the market. I think it was like 6-7 years AFTER the introduction of DVD format then only China made players were available. So it might take a while for them to follow suit with BD Players too. So in the mean time, us early adopters pay for the premium.

If for the US, the China made BD players will arrive first quarter of next year at around USD299 (SRP) but of course, might be cheaper. Not sure about Malaysia. Yup, might take a while when we finally see that from happening.

USD299 X 3.4 = RM1,016.60. Still aint cheap for a China made BDP for the masses here.

I bet they (masses) would only jump into BD bandwagon if it dips below RM500 and the software are easily 'available' at 'affordable price' (pandai-pandailah)

For Malaysia, even a BD player is RM399, I think ppl won't buy it unless the BD software is RM5 per title but then, people can buy a BD player to play jack sparrow dvds or cds though.

Found this:

http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=1740

QUOTE
Sources have indicated to Blu-ray.com that at least one company will offer a limited number of Blu-ray Disc players for under $200 this holiday season.

These players will likely be entry-level BonusView (Profile v1.1) players that companies hope to empty from their inventory as BD-Live (Profile v2.0) players begin to saturate the market.

Additionally, recent industry whispers that Sony would be lowering the MSRP of their BDP-S350 and upcoming BDP-S550 also appear to be true, but may only be temporary.
Note that this is only in the US. When we can see below US$200 (RM680) BD Player in Malaysia is anyone's guess. But I guess there is hope yet in the near future smile.gif

Time will bring the price down when certain economy of scale is being reached. The same scenario was seen when DVDP was launched.

It was a 'luxury' player back then at above RM2K. Then, as years passed by, the price tumbling down to really affordable range.

Nope the Sharp BD-20 dont do DTS-HDMA at all, internally or bitstream. I'm also using that player. All DTS-HDMA encoding gets downgraded to normal DTS.

Check out here: http://www.blu-ray.com/players/players.php?id=20&show=specs

My target is Sony S350. Looking at how slow Sony Malaysia is, I don't think I can see it here by end of this year. So I was hoping Amazon got special price for xmas.

NAD Introduces High-end Blu-ray Disc Player

user posted image

NAD Electronics has introduced their first Blu-ray Disc player, the NAD T 587. This BD-Live player has the ability display video at 1080p24 as well as decode or bitstream all audio formats. A unique feature of this player is the ability to process both NTSC and PAL standard definition formats, making this an excellent player for imported Blu-ray titles that feature non compliant standard definition content.

Oddly enough, the player will not feature any multi-channel analog outs, meaning that the only way to get high definition audio out of the machine will be through HDMI connection.

The player is expected to hit store shelves next month for an estimated retail price of $1500.

Very odd indeed. They're forcing old timers to buy new generation receivers. I guess the high-end Pioneer ELITE series is a better choice with gold-plated multichannel anlogue outs.

But wow, loading time in seconds! PS3 is beaten!

"The T 587 has a very fast loading time for Blu-ray Discs, typically just a few seconds. Many BD players take over a minute before you can get picture, sound and navigation. This may not sound like much, but it seems an eternity if you are waiting to start watching your favorite movie."

http://nadelectronics.com/products/dvd-pla...-Player/details

But, erm, look at the price tag. sweat.gif cry.gif

I read somewhere that the BD-55, BD-35 can actually output in 1080p/24Hz for DVD...Can the person who bought Corez's BD-55 confirm this. I read that you have to force the output to 24Hz for each disc and it is not automatic. If it has this function, then it would be great...One way to check it would be to hook it up to an AVR and check to see what the AVR is receiving.

Need to wait for very long time if you want Malaysian release. Currently only BD30 is selling and BD 50 is coming soon.

For modded unit it is priced at £475 not including shipping rclxub.gif

We're in agreement to not sell the PS3, and use it for HD entertainment center/gaming only. I will buy a dedicated standalone player for BD movies. The only thing is I have to find alternative fund for it, that will possibily mean my year end bonus.

i am waiting and see if there's any sales coming up in the next few weeks before i place the order for this. there's still a price diff btwn the BD35 and S350...sony being the cheaper of the 2. but the prospect of the front SDHC vs the rear USB, i prefer the front thing.

oh yeah, i'll be getting the region B version.

hey piscesguy.....can you please let me know if the power cord on your BD55 is detachable or not? not one of those integrated into the unit, right?

Blu-ray.com Exclusive: Blu-ray Player Benchmarks

user posted image

Power on time:
Measures the time the player takes, in seconds, to power on from the remote control and to convey that it is ready to work via the HDTV display. The lower the number the better.

Disc Eject Time:
This test measures the amount of time it takes, in seconds, for a player to fully eject the disc tray while playing a Blu-ray movie. The lower the number the better.

Movie Load Time – Basic:
Measures the amount of time, in seconds, that a player takes to load a film, encoded without Java or BD+, from the time the disc tray starts closing to the time that content appears on the screen. BD drive speed can impact this number. The lower the number the better.

Movie Load Time - BD-J:
Measures the amount of time a player takes, in seconds, to load a film, encoded with BD-Java, from the time the disc tray starts closing to the time that content appears on the screen. BD drive speed can impact this number. The lower the number the better.

Movie Load Time – BD+:
Measures the amount of time a player takes, in seconds, to load a film, encoded with BD+ copy protection, from the time the disc tray starts closing to the time that content appears on the screen. BD drive speed can impact this number. The lower the number the better.

BD-J Overall Performance:
This measurement calculates the player's overall ability to efficiently execute BD-Java content. This will affect the player's smoothness of menus, games, and other features using BD-J. Some players will not execute this benchmark and are marked with a red “NO” in the performance section. A "NO" rating does not indicate poor performance, but simply that the player in question does not support the form of media that the test disc is recorded on. The higher the number the better.

The following tests measure player's BD-Java graphics abilities. These numbers show how efficient the player will be at loading and navigating menus as well as Java based games.

BD-J Small Object Performance:
Measures smoothness and speed of small Java graphic objects – the higher the number the better.

BD-J Large Object Performance:
Measures smoothness and speed of larger Java graphic objects - the higher the number the better.

BD-J Scaling Performance:
This test measures the player's ability to scale Java graphics for BD menus and games. The higher the number the better.

BD-J Opacity Performance:
This measurement calculates the player's ability to render graphics that are opaque. The higher the number the better.

This is just the benchmark for speed performance. I think it's quite hard to benchmark PQ/AQ, it's too subkective to put numbers to it. But from general review, PS3 is still the best, now following closely by BD35/55 and S350/550. The Pioneers and the newer models from denon/Marantz I got no idea.

Not sure, but without multichannel analogue outs, it's quite expensive at $399 retail price. The specs is almost similar to BD35/S350 which retails at $299.

PS3 is probably the cheapest option only in Msia.....elsewhere you get those sony/panasonic/samsung stand-alone players at a lower price compared to the PS3....

i think my PS3's fan is a bit noisy from day 1.....heard there's a difference in fan noise comparing the current (80GB) and previous 40GB with the early 60GB units....mine is the 60GB unit.
