Sabah - Land Below The Wind

Sabah is blessed with incredibly beautiful beaches and islands that are world-renowned for their ecological marvels. With attractions that include the highest peak in the region, the world largest Orang Utan rehabilitation sanctuary and some of the best dive sites in the world, Sabah is a land of eco-treasures.

Known as 'The Land Below the Wind' because geographically, Sabah is below the typhoon belt, sitting at the tip of Borneo and shares a border with Sarawak and Kalimantan. With an inland area of 74,500 square kilometres and a coastline that stretches 1,400km, it is surrounded by South China Sea on the west and on the east are the Sulu and Celebes Seas.

Historically, Sabah was under several chieftains and traded with the Chinese as early as 9th century A.D. Later, the state started trading with the Spanish as well as the Portuguese. During the 15th century, Sabah was a vassal of the Sultan of Brunei. In 1704, the Sultan of Brunei ceded the land east of Murudu Bay to the Sultan of Sulu. In the early 1880's, Moses, an American trader, obtained a lease over Sabah from Brunei. The lease eventually passed to Alfred Dent, an Englishman. In 1881, he signed a treaty with Brunei and Sulu, converting the lease into a cession, thus British North Borneo (and later changed to Sabah) was born. It was administered by the Chartered Company of British North Borneo until the Japanese occupation. In 1945, after World War II, Sabah became a British Crown Colony. In 1963, it gained independence and joined Malaysia.

This East Malaysian state's handicrafts bear the unique stamp of its many indigenous peoples. In particular look out for beads, hand woven baskets. Pua-weaving indigenous to the states of Sabah and Sarawak, is distinguished by ruddy hues and a predominance of plant and animal motifs

International access to Sabah is through its capital, Kota Kinabalu, which receives flights from Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, Kuching, Singapore, Hong Kong, Manila, Brunei, Jakarta, Seoul, and Taipei. Domestic travel in this vast state is via daily flights between Labuan, Sandakan, Lahad Datu, and Tawau, though large areas are still inaccessible. A rail network stretches from Kota Kinabalu to Tenom, and buses, taxis, and boats are also available.

People

With a population of about 2.6 million, comprising of over 30 different races speaking over 80 local dialects, it offers a diverse and multicultural experience. The three main indigenous groups of Sabah are the Kadazan-Dusun, Murut, and Bajau. Others include Kedayans, Sulu, Bisaya, Rumanau, Minokok, and Rungus

The largest, the Kadazan-Dusun, make up about a third of the population. These are the prosperous rice producers of Sabah, although in recent times many have ventured into other trades. Living in the interior plains they are well known for their unique customs that feature female priestesses called 'bobohizan' presiding over still practiced ancient rituals.

The Bajaus are skilled fishermen as well as rice farmers they are also experts in rearing ponies and water buffaloes. They live mainly on the east and west coasts. East coast Bajaus are sea nomads, coming ashore only to bury the dead. The West-coast Bajaus are farmers and being dubbed as 'The cowboys of the East', they are renowned for their horsemanship.

The Muruts, being agriculturists and hunters, live in the interior region near the borders of Sarawak and Kalimantan. Once feared for their head hunting, the Muruts are great hunters with spears, blowpipes and poisoned darts. Many still reside in their traditional communal longhouses and they are well known for their elaborate displays of bride-wealth, dancing and feasting.

will strongly recommend Radius waterfront or Imperial Hotel KK...strategic location with reasonable price...hotel room is so unique as compare to those typical hotel room.

how about the recent announcement of price hike and making all climbers compulsary in buying package from Sutera? any comments from you guys? starting next year they are going to implement it. There is an increase of about RM 100++ . previously u can save on food if you choose to bring your own.

karambunai is quite far from KK... if u said it is pricey, try other hotel...

12 of us plan to go on holiday in one of sabah's islands. None of us know how to dive, only know how to snorkel. None of us have 5 star hotel budgets in our hands but with 5 star food budget in our hands.

I need some recomendations from all of u who've been to sabah islands.
I've read several threads in here, some saying that pulau layang layang is infested with military camps and sipadan is strictly for divers with 5 star hotel budgets. There's also a thread bout manukan islands and a forumer replying to stay at sapi island and crossover to manukan during daytim. I've also done some research on turtle islands and langkayan. I'd like all of u to recommend me a place to stay and the island.
We are not that young, so hiking is pretty much out. I'd prefer to hear the views from all of u rather than to read at some pingachorage website.

Quite many island are popular here, and the obvious sure Sipadan . Got Mataking, got Mabul (near Sipadan), Kapalai and Roach Reef Resort (not an island, self built resort BUT it is in the middle of the sea)

My personal recommendation definitely would be Sipadan. If going to Sipadan, you have to stay at Mabul as well. Its been a regulation since gov urges the conversation effort to save the natural reefs and other natural habitats. So by day you can enjoy yourself at Sipadan, by night which at most need shelter, have to stay at Mabul or Kapalai. I can't confirm out which places have to stay either Kapalai or Mabul BUT one thing for sure is SIPADAN DON'T PROVIDE ACCOMMODATION. So please help yourself and check out Kapalai and Mabul for more details. Links provided at above. Enormous details is all included at their homepages.
Usually when tourist or visitors wanna have a trip to Sipadan, they usually will "depart" from Semporna via boat which usually takes 40 minutes IF I'M NOT MISTAKEN. It's been awhile the last time i visited Sipadan. So arrange flight, if u depart from KL, you have choices to choose flight directly to TAWAU then you will via car to SEMPORNA. I believe JB too have a direct flight to TAWAU as well. Either way, those are simple decision.

Roach Reef Resort (RRR) has been my most visited "island"/resort. I personally don't recommend you to visit there if you TRULY GENUINELY wanna enjoy the mind-blowing experience of underwater world or perhaps, relaxation of the sea breeze. Snorkeling at RRR doesn't seems much fun compared to area of Sipadan-Kapalai-Mabul. The Sipadan area is what i called haven. You should see for yourself the famous Sipadan "bowl", where from the beach of Sipadan just a few steps away the sea level suddenly drop to around like 70 feets. Now thats quite deep for fishes, turtles and reefs. This is the spot where u can truly enjoy snorkeling.

I just don't know what i can type anymore to help you out from the hassle deciding which island to visit. You can freely reply me/asking me question in this thread.

maybe you live near the sea area or the remote area like keningau. even kota kinabalu is damn hot
thats why i usually stay with a friend from ranau. will be buying a piece of land there soon.

@sukun, firstly i would like to thank you for the information that you have provided to me thus far. I am indeed grateful.
My budget per person for a local holiday trip is around 1k for all inclusive of flight.
So assuming i can book air asia's special deals which would be the 0.99/1.99/9.99 tickets, that'll be RM200+ gone.
The hotels listed on those islands are atrociously expensive. Most in USD. Even with the declining USD rates, its really really expensive.
Mabul looks beautiful but the prices are even more beautiful.

If these are the standard type of rates, i would have no choice but to cancel my trip to sabah. The value of going to sabah wouldnt be the same as the value that we are travelling overseas. A budget trip to Boracay would cost me just RM400 for a 3d2n stay. At a 2 star hotel ;full board.

I'm not looking to stay luxuriously as i'll be out of my rooms virtually the whole day.

Are u able to give me some suggestions based on this ? I'm sorry to trouble u indeed. Hope u can assist me on this.

air tickets be ready to fork out around RM500-600, go-and-return condition. for the packages island rates, i BELIEVE it applies to international tourist?
maybe you opt to contact them via email asking them regarding the rates for local visitors. that's sure clears out all of your doubts and confusion.

i certainly agree with you statement "I'm not looking to stay luxuriously as i'll be out of my rooms virtually the whole day. " but if you are the owner of the island/resort, would you rent to customers when only they needed? doesn't make sense right? either way, please contact them regarding the rates before you can continue your planning since your budget is your main concern.

@sukun, the air tickets are easy, as its easy for me to obtain air asia info. got an insider in there to notify me of 1st hand news.
You are right, i do plan to go around april or may depending on the weather. But its between those 2 month. Air asia's promo tickets are to be reserved around 6-7 months before departure date.

Also the sites u have directed me to, i have actually seen the local rates found available at pinganchorage. It isnt in USD but RM and yes its around the region of thousands for 3d2n. All except langkayan who only provided me with 6d5n packages.
The only island resort which i found below the region of RM1k is pulau tiga.

You may feel free to correct me if i'm wrong or direct me to a site or resort which offers the similar amount. Trying to be a smart consumer, to get the best value for my money. I'm also sorry if i'm asking too many questions, but yes i do need your aid in this matter. Again i truly appreciate your effort for replying. Thanks.

Well, to be fair, ASAIK, i guess the cheapest you can look around if you want to have your island holiday Tawau sea region (Celebes sea region) might be Roach Reef Resort (RM500-800?). Maybe you can do some research on some west malaysia destinations as well? Considering the amount around 1k+ have to pay to stay at Sipadan island region i believe is quite cheap. People don't named Sipadan top10 diving spot in the world for no reasons. Get what i mean. But if it exceeds your budget, i found it defeat the purpose you want to have a 'holiday'! So thats all i can do for now. A little more homework won't hurts the cheque. Have a nice day!

You are absolutely right. Sipadan is top 10 diving site in the world. Thank god i dont dive as i stated. A holiday budget is set depending on the area we go. I can travel for that same amount to a nicer place overseas. Why travel m'sia when overseas have better ammenities for the same price ? Diff in culture, diff in lifestyle, diff in food. I have been to redang, perhentian and lang tengah. Also gone to tioman. However, maldives and mauritius are way better off. And the diff in pricing, just the airline ticket is the additional cost for me (in comparison to sabah's sipadan/mabul/langkayan pricing)

I have travelled to many places outside of m'sia. The cuti cuti m'sia thing isnt appealing right now. Cost is a great factor, and so long as the cost is high, i might as well travel abroad.

ya u r rite cicak04..the cost of living in KK nowadays is very high...other than that..more and more illegal Filipinos coming in every day...

it's hard for sammy vellu to build a toll in sabah roads de snake shape and hills road. so, far the only straight road i've ever seen is the one in keningo and lawas highway. hard to find a 3 lanes one. but heck! it really challenging and can developed our driving skills.

Can go to pulau manukan or other 3 islands but will not be as nice as redang tho Meet KK party ppl in Shenanigan's (club/bar/pub ) in Hyatt's hotel. It's all at the centre of KK. It's not too big afterall. If u stay around the centre, these are the things to do... Mt. Kinabalu trip will take at least a day.

Hmm, from KK to Tamparuli will be normal roads, but expect potholes though, after Tamparuli bridge its going uphill -climbing mountain non-stop till you arrive Kundasang. Hehe..

Hmm for a van I think more than RM200, try get a wira/kenari will do..

How long it takes? For those express buses with Scania's 380hp/420hp it took about 1hour 15minutes for them to reach Kundasang, max speed 120km/h.. huhu.. They are the Initial D's of Sabah...

Hmm you can rent mpv/car at airport itself, although the rent is a bit higher, but the car is insured, unlike others which are cheaper, but if something happen (touch wood) you have to pay for repair!!! Last time my friend kena ugut RM600 cos he grazed a Perdana, the rental shop say cant claim insurance la, what la..

Sure you can make it in a day, try to leave Kundasang at about 5pm ,as it gets dark at EAST MALAYSIA about 6pm..

The distance is like Penang to Alor Setar lor, but the road got normal road, bukit road lo..

Hey guys, I'll be flying in to KK and boy am i excited as this will be my first destination in East Malaysia. My itenary covers 3 days : Day 1- sightseeing in KK Town, Day 2 - Kinabalu Park and Day 3 - Island Hopping (thinking of manukan and sapi)

I was just wondering how much will the cabbie be charging for a trip up to Kinabalu Park ? Do we require a tour guide in the Park ? We'll be overnighting there.

As for island hopping, what is the crowd like on a Sunday ? Will it be overun by kids disturbing a good and quiet suntan ?

and climbing kk mountain is around 500+.Its best that if u guys wanna go on adventure like these that u guys go to a tour guide.I think the package there is quite cheap.
Another backdoor option is that if u know a student agent specifically ums.I went padas for 100 and kk mountain for 400.The price for rafting wont differ much but hiking price would differ aorund 100+

Hi red queen, I'm KL ppl, but I've an office in Sabah(KK), and been travel in Sabah quite often(2 weeks per month)...so to answer ur questions, I hope i can give u some ideas for it...

Nice place to visit has been mentioned in earlier post by "thahirah"...it is better if u can rent a car over there, and travels around. Basically if u just stay in KK alone, u'll miss quite a lot of sceneric places which scattered around sabah which will be like Sandakan(Monkeys), Kudat(Long houses & Simpang Mengayau(Tips of borneo), Tamparuli(Water rafting & hanging bridge), Ranau/Kundasang(Mount Kinabalu, Poring hot spring, fresh vege markets, Tuaran(Crocodile farm, nice sea food restaurant named "Salut")....

Well i guess if u want to spent ur 3 days 2 nights in KK alone, sunday market(Pasar Gaya at gaya street(Don't forget to drop by the blind man foot massage over there RM15 for 30 mins which i think it is quite cheap.. look for the 2 fat guys over there to massage u hehehe...), Philipines market(sells cheap pearl) seafood bakar during at nights, shopping centres(Centre point, wisma merdeka) , nice clubs(Razz Ma Taz, The Jugs(Pan pac hotel), The bed, Shenaningan) will offers u a quite nice places for clubbings... but for drinking places, u can easily find at water front there, but if u are looking for romantic places to spent some romantic times with ur gf, you can drop by to tanjung aru, which is beside seasides ... and there are live band there singings nice songs....for cheap beers, Sabah is a place where offers u cheap beers & liqours!

Aiyo I was born in Sabah but grew up in KL... I am going for 6D5N trip to Sabah in July... and have done some researches online about Sabah... only now I realised that Sabah has got loads to offer!!! So many places to go... now i got headache...

i'm going to sabah on july as well!5d4n trip.im going on the 10th. Going to mt kinabalu,padas rafting and probably island hopping. Well regarding your 1st question,i think it is possible. You can go to the park early morning till evening then head to poring hotspring. If you don't plan to stay,it's abit tight though. It's better if you overnight at poring.

I have a friend in KK but maybe because she is local, so she does not travel so in depth like non sabahan... I did some researches on where I would love to go but I realised Sabah is a GEM! So many places to visit... However, I have time constraint and probably budget also... I read from other travellers travelblog and other forums online, it cost you around RM 20 (not sure one way or two ways) to get to manukan beach by boat of course and the snorkeling mask rental is RM 10.00. Sapi and Manukan islands are not too far from each other... not to worry... My Sabahan friend said Manukan is nicer... I read that Sapi has got white sands though...

Erm I will be spending on whole day on Manukan Beach for photography session or something (might do a bit of snorkeling) but not spending a night there... I plan to go to Kinabalu Park and Poring Hot Spring for a day or might spend a night in either place... Then would love to try to go to Klias river to view the Proboscis Monkeys and the fireflies and another day is gone... I found the price to be RM 185.00 that covers meals, transfer from KK - Klias river per person... why lah so damn expensive... all tourists price one... adui...

Initially planned to go to Selingan turtle Island but no time and too expensive, i dropped the plan... Also has anyone been to Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary? I plan to spend a night at Sepilok Jungle Resort in Sandakan after visiting Labuk Bay. Then morning time I will go to the Orang Utan Centre for the morning feeding session... Sepilok Jungle Resort provides transfers to and from Labuk Bay Monkey Sanc for RM 185 per person that includes a guide, entrance fee and transfers. That is expensive lah... The entrance fee to the sanctuary costs you RM 65.00. But maybe the problem how are you going to travel between the two places... get a taxi? How much will that cost?

Anyone knows any freelance driver or tour guide ke? Maybe can get cheaper price...

Yeah,everything is expensive nowadays. If we were to travel 3 yrs ago it would be less than half of whatever we paying now! Anyway, i'm not too sure bout the rest so can't help sry.

You havent bought any packages there rite? Try to email to Mdm Wong(info@wwadventure.com). State where u planning to go and also state ur budget. She will work out a good rate for you. She's been very helpful. She's abit busy now though so be patient to wait for her reply. Don't worry it's safe to deal with her. In fact she is juichuan's(travelnliving's mod) mum. In my package, land transfers are provided so i dun have to worry bout transportation.

Wah speedy reply! Cool cool! I will be traveling with a friend. Then gonna meet my friend in KK and her 2 friends (also from KL - they arrive the day you arrive! You taking air asia?). hehe no prob. Btw, I'm taking MAS to KK and AA back to KL coz when i booked the tickets the dif between those 2 was only like few ringgit. I wished to come back to KL by MAS as well but the only flight left with zero fare will arrive KL quite late so i opted for AA instead.

our biggest shopping mall called 1Borneo opening soon.. I think on the 8th June. very Huge mall..but I never been there yet lol..

if you guys want good seafood..can go SALUT near Tuaran area... around 30 mins drive from KK....very nice and fresh prawn...

and for Kundasang/Kinabalu Park around 1hour30mins drive from KK..then around 30mins drive to go Poring hotspring from Kundasang/Kinabalu Park. Better stay overnight at Kundasang coz very nice/fresh air...but quite expensive also...

I seldom go Pulau one so no idea.

Yeah i will stay at the foothill one night b4 climbing the mountain. I'll be staying at mesilau side.

yup climbing mt kinabalu. haha yeah we already started training. twice a week we walk up a hill near my place.45 mins-1 hr. plus we play futsal every week. although i won't consider myself very fit but fit enough to climb up

i just hope i don't have this altitude sickness or worst of all rain heavily till can't climb to the peak.

the price i think 40-50++ gua for 1Kg fresh water prawn (DAMN NICE!!!). Parent pay one..but sometime if I go with my gf...I pay..but I forgot how much...Rm 50+ for 1/2kg prawn + Rm 10 fried mee + 2 drinks + 1 vege gua..

KK to UMS (no traffic jam) = 10-15mins drive..

Oo..good lar....the climbing is like walking staircase only....so I think you train walk staircase better: ) Play futsal OK lar..fit lor..last time I train 1-2 month b4 climb..go jogging and hills.. but last last the day b4 climb I went to it Bai Kut Teh then when climb that time fever.. + SUPER SUPER HEAVY RAIN...Omg... you try imagine ..just boiled water can direct put the face!!!
*REMEMBER* bring yoko-yoko ...very good..coz last time my time too cold coz heavy rain...leg cramp.. and dont drink MILK...make you vomit only.

you use what route? Mesilau one or Kinabalu Park one? I heard they said Mesilau one harder to climb. With girls? if with GF...very hard but nice feeling lar..

I'm going up through the Mesilau trail. Yeah they say Mesilau trail longer but scenery much nicer. nola no gf going up with 2 frens(guys)

If you need other advice like what to bring/wear...you let me know lar..I try to recall what did I bring last time:) but I remember I gave the local to help me carry my bag... RM 10 the local there superman even small kids/girl very geng...can naik-turun few times (while I on the way climbing) with full bags / tong gas zzz..

Alright if i have any queries i'll ask you.I've been reading quite alot here and there so i roughly know what to bring/wear.

Anyway, i just have one question. From Gaya Street if i wanna get to the airport(AA flight-dif airport right?), can i take a bus? I would try to skip taxi coz it will cost around rm20.

hmm I think got bus one RM 20? so expensive meh..not so sure oo.try to nego a bit gua...those taxi driver always want to potong tourist leher one, AA & MAS different airport...but same lane way one....just one west one east like that only (building location) Gaya there got alot alot taxi...
