@jutamind,
Act, the conversion for forex on Amex is like this:-

Foreign Currency --> USD --> RM

Unless your purchases are made in USD then it's converted straight to RM otherwise there'll be 2 conversions made; into USD and then only into local currency.

The 2.5% administrative charges still applies.

Thank you tinkerbel for the simplier explanation. Guess mine was too long winded.

QUOTE(winner @ Jun 21 2009, 08:06 AM)
Well, MBB sent me Amex gold charge card last month although I didn't apply for it. At the back of this card, it reads like this: THIS CARD IS ISSUED BY MBB PURSUANT TO A LICENSE FROM AMEX. I believe MBB took over operation of Amex in M'sia by contributing a contract fee and incentive fee to Amex. MBB owns the rights to operate it with the license from Amex.

As mentioned in my previous post, AMEX Malaysia is operating like a franchise. MBB owns the rights to American Express Malaysia with them paying a royalty fee to American Express Limited in USA every year. Maybank didn't merge their own credit card business with AMEX. These two still operate as separate entities.

QUOTE(winner @ Jun 21 2009, 08:06 AM)
With this, I think the monthly statements of all Amex cards in M'sia are sent out directly from Amex office owned by MBB in M'sia, don't need to go through its regional HQ in Hong Kong.

Negative. The statement for all AMEX issued by AMEX itself are prepared and sent out from American Express regional office in Hong Kong.

QUOTE(winner @ Jun 21 2009, 08:06 AM)
Pertaining to overseas transactions, the foreign currency is first converted to USD, before the USD is converted back to RM. In the event that it involves two conversions, the 2.5% commission charge is only applied to the 1st conversion from foreign currency to USD.
You will also lose more in FOREX.

Another difference would be that in charge cards, you don't have a line of credit unlike credit cards. So you'll have to settle your bill in full each month. On the other hand, you can opt to pay the minimum amount of your credit card bill (a very small amount), and be subject to interest.

I think we have a clear winner here and it is the newly launched AMEX Gold Credit Card.

Even though, it's a winner but Ikhwan still suits me for the mean time.

Reason is Ikhwan on TP, the new AMEX Gold is on MR.

@David83,
Yes... there are different needs for different individuals.

Added on June 24, 2009, 11:22 am@tgeoklin,
I contacted Amex this morning to check on the payment of utility bills via phone. Apparently, it's not allowed. The only way to pay is either through auto direct debit or to walk into the merchant sad.gif

@jackoz,
I believe it's a back pack but I can't be too certain. Let's wait for someone who's received the free gift to get back to us biggrin.gif

Dear, it not Amex but Maxis you got to call to register your Amex card. As far as Amex is concerned, its a normal ad-hoc merchant transaction. Fyi I got Visa, Master, Amex & Diners all registered and can pay anytime via calling Maxis at 123 whenever I feel like it.

Oh, at times the CS at Maxis will be trained to decline charge card and insist only on Visa/Master only. Just tell them you do not own any cc and only have charge card. That should make it easier to get their understanding tongue.gif

Just check my application status this afternoon for the New Gold Credit Card, its still pending. Usually AMEX process it pretty fast but this time is a bit abnormal. Hopefully can get it approved soon.
