I have been reading this thread and can't help but to get curious about using AMEX again.

Previously used KRISFlyer AMEX and remembered the tedious process of applying it. Canceled the card after using it for about 2 years as it didn't bring me much points benefit vs. my conventional cc.

Hi hye & tgeoklin,
Amex Malaysia charge card approval now under MBB fully control.
If ur relationship with MBB are good, u can request from them.
FYI I dun hold their Amex gold charge card before but straight away they invited me as their plat charge card member with 1st year AF waived as I requested.
I currently hold MBB Visa,MC & Amex plat cc(1st year AF waived too for Amex plat cc) tongue.gif

Got that RockIron ... thanks!
I got the invite from MBB before as well but only for their gold card. I declined after I received the card coz I wanted the Platinum. And I got a little upset coz the time they took to revert back was 2 months after I submitted my acceptance for the gold card.

Aiyoh .... I don't make friends just for the sake of getting my card fees waived. I believe in sincerity in friendship. (Please don't take offense or misunderstand my statement) tongue.gif Well, if the banks can give it to me for free, I'll be happy. biggrin.gif

Will camp out here and see whether the seniors here got any lubang.

@hye,
You mean if you're a MBB Priority Banker, you can get waived off AF for Amex Platinum?
*
Permanent waiver was not clear but at least 1st year AF waiver.

hye,
Not really need to be MBB priority banking customers in order to get the Amex plat cc waiver. nod.gif
It's all depending ur relationship with MBB.
FYI,I m not MBB priority banking customer but they offer me the Amex plat cc with 1st year AF waived.
My relationship with MBB only their Visa & MC plat with 7 years membership.

Thanks RockIron, probably it's a long shot for me due to the long timeline.
Will continue camp here for good news.

OK lah ... at least Dozz won something. It is not easy to win these prizes and sometimes I wonder whether it is all a publicity stunt just to attract customers.

Actually I was the one who asked that question - it annoys me that cc don't have a 24 hours number to call in.

The number is actually 03 20500880. Recommend to use this number only when necessary coz worried AMEX might get smart when they realise a lot of people are calling this number.

@tinkerbel ... you can keep the number above in your phonebook as well just in case.

Yes it is true. The Amex Plat AF is non waiveable. Some folks here downgrade to Gold but they get to maintain their points.

do u think amex will be widely accepted in japan? my sis back from japan and telling me big merchant will accept amex but mostly are accepting jcb instead of amex!
*
In Japan, JCB are one of the largest card issuer there. Very widely accepted if you ask me. (At least from my observation when I was there) You should have no problems with VISA and MC but I'll avoid AMEX in the first place due to the higher management charge (compared to VISA or MC) when you use your card overseas.

lol ,seems most of us here are going to downgrade.. perhaps amex should come out with something different and worth the RM 800 that we paid ! By the way the gold credit card 5x points and lifetime AF waiver is attractive. brows.gif
*
With AMEX rewards getting more attractive, would it be a matter of time before they (MBB) "adjust" the rewards requirements as well ? Sorry guys, but I just couldn't see how can MBB make it sustainable.

AMEX Gold Credit Card is officially launched already. Saw the publicity write-up in TheSun newspaper today.

U going ahead to put your application in?!

*thinks the entire world is going to be carrying the Amex Gold Credit Card soon*

I'm not much a fan of AMEX coz I travel quite a bit and the admin charges are more expensive than the conventional MC or VISA. And I have this thing for cash rebate cards these days. Dunno lah ... maybe yes n maybe no.

Hm.. this 1% admin fee from UOB is something new!
*
Not really, I've heard something like that before from someone regarding UOB. That's why I had this thought in my head that the only bank left that is "admin fee" free is Alliance.

Let's stick to the main topic ... this is the AMEX thread after all. CC is in the other.

anyone knows whether there's any fees/surcharge if we use amex gold credit card to pay for transactions in oversea, such as spending during oversea holidays?
*
It has been mentioned before, the bank add's an additional 2.5% as admin fees on top of your transaction.

Now ... after you get that number, whatever you spend will be converted to MYR based on the bank's forex rate. Forex rates changes on a daily basis and it is not stated on the bank's website, best if you use xe.com just to give you a guide and to complicate it slightly (I believe), you will be charged based on the rates for the posted date and not the transaction date. (Transaction date = actual date and Posted date = when the merchant claims)

AMEX is the most expensive for overseas spendings vs normal cc admin rates.

@jutamind,
Act, the conversion for forex on Amex is like this:-

Foreign Currency --> USD --> RM

Unless your purchases are made in USD then it's converted straight to RM otherwise there'll be 2 conversions made; into USD and then only into local currency.

The 2.5% administrative charges still applies.

Thank you tinkerbel for the simplier explanation. Guess mine was too long winded.
