Great thread, guys. It's super informative.

I'm in the midst of planning a trip to Tokyo next February, so if you guys who've been to Japan would please share the cost of the trip and how long you stayed there that would be awesome.

Just some rough figures to get me going would be enough! thumbup.gif

I spent about 120k yen for 5 days in Tokyo for food, shopping, transport, etc (not including flight and accomodation).

Thanks for the info. I'm planning to stay around 5 days too smile.gif

Was 5 days enough for you to "experience" Tokyo or would you recommend getting out of the city a bit?

It depends what is your definition of "experience." If you want comprehensive, you'll be spending 2 days just on disneysea/disneyland alone.

I managed to book return flights on Airasia to Kansai International Airport (KIX) for RM750 per person (including luggage, seat charge etc etc), so I'll be going with my girlfriend. Hotel booking was made via Agoda.com.

Still debating whether to go to Mt. Koya or not, as it adds over 1k to the cost of the trip, and only for 1 night. If we decide not to go to Mt. Koya, then the average cost of a hotel room per night is only around RM200 - 250, very reasonable.

All prices in RM, for 2 persons:

4N Kyoto Royal Hotel & Spa 997
1N Nara Komachi Guesthouse 265
1N Osaka Chisun Hotel Shinsaibashi 175
1N Mt. Koya temple (estimate) 800
1N Osaka Chisun Hotel Shinsaibashi 175
Accomodation total: 2412 for 7 nights

KUL - KIX Airasia 1468
Train from KIX to Kyoto 1 way 160
Train from Kyoto to Nara 1 way 56
Train from Nara to Osaka 1 way 64
Koyasan World Heritage ticket 226
Train from Osaka to KIX 1 way 72
Long distance transportation total: 2046

Hi guys wanna ask whether is it fine to travel to Japan in mid-August?
Checked from a few sources, it says that the typhoon season peaks during August and September.

Will be going to Haneda during Mar School Holiday 6D5N

Still early to start planning but well why not haha..Itineraries probably incl Tokyo & Kyoto (Palace & Mt Fuji)

Abit of question..pardon at this stage bcos I hv really start doing any research yet haha..

1) How much is the bullet train fare to Kyoto from Tokyo?
2) Can the capsule hotel bed accomodate 2 person? - Trying to be kiampsiap abit haha
3) Should I make a day trip to Kyoto/Mt Fuji or stay 1 or 2 nite there?

I'm only super duper budget backpacking style and probably only bringing RM4000K max for my trip there...Hopefully can survive within a week haha.. Hotel & ticket -prebooked..So RM4K is just for transportation, food & abit of soorvenirs

4k for how many pax?

1) The last i've checked. Single journey tickets for shinkansen goes as low as RM700+. Always get the pass which is more affordable.
2) Capsule Hotel have 'coffin-like' sleeping area which is only for 1 pax. Usually they do not allow women to stay there (as far as I know but I might be wrong).
3) Not sure.

Wah RM700/pax on bullet train...that goes my Kyoto plan cry.gif ..I was thinking it will be as affordable as Seoul.. sad.gif
RM4K is just for transport (MRT) & food for 3 pax.. as Hotel will be prepaid as usual haha. Limiting to only taking breakfast & Dinner and junk lunch of cup noodle in any 7-11 blush.gif .

If capsule kenot fit 2 pax, no choice taking a semi-double bed one room liao..The cheapest I can find ~ US$70/room after adding tax in agoda.. hmm.gif

Hrm, cup noodle for lunch ah? Actually their 7-11 got the rice pack which is quite affordable as well and imo delicious LOL. Much more filling than cup noodle la. Breakfast, you should buy their rice balls (dunno call what dy) from 7-11, quite tasty and filling but for myself I need 2 to be full! For drinks, best you buy the biggest bottle, much bigger value than the small ones. If can go to supermarkets, from what i can see, it's cheaper abit than 7-11.

Maybe you can try renting rooms/apartments from www.airbnb.com? I started booking my accomodations from this website this year onwards for all my trips. Sometimes some of their property are located very central. Cheaper than renting hotel rooms. Much more homey.

I feel that agoda's prices are not cheap plus the 'special charges' are not revealed until you want to finalized your booking.

Hrm, I think Rm4k will be enough for transportation, food, some attractions.

You'll be taking your kid INTO disneyland this time right? LOL

I went to Japan exactly a year ago, and will visit it again exactly a year from now (planning to celebrate Christmas and New Year 2013 at Tokyo)

I remembered strolling Akihabara for 2-3 hours to find a maid who could speak decent English and visiting Ms for some naughty toys for my then gf tongue.gif

Despite only knowing basic Japanese, i traveled the subways alone for a few days and it was quite a breeze, i had absolutely no fear of getting lost or robbed around Tokyo. Simply loved the onigiri as well, cheap and filling (gained 2 kilos after just 9 days thanks to it).

I've visited many countries before and Japan is thus far the best i've been to and can't wait to return...with friends this time! biggrin.gif

Just came back from Japan. Do keep in mind to those flying into Haneda Airport, you will touch at the tarmac (ala LCCT) then there will be a shuttle bus to fetch you to the terminal. It will be the same when you depart to the plane.

NOW, you imagine kiasu Malaysians and Singaporeans lining up at the boarding gate one hour before even an announcement is made.
