I think this only apply to those work so hard until there is no time to do something that they like. Like I like to play video games, I'm also doing (console/phone) that after work - and I don't go like hours playing games, so a day maybe login to my PoGo to do some task, take down gym to earn some coins, play MLBB, turn on my Switch for a match FIFA etc. If I have time before sleep, I watch some series on Netflix/Prime/TvbAnywhere. Sometimes I work on some coding (now lesser due to not doing much of a freelance). I've been doing this even though I'm working. Yum cha also depends whether others are free, although I have no issue cafe hop myself. Of course I can still pick up some new skills should I FIRE, but occasionally I do question myself what I'm going to do with those free time.

I've been wanting to FIRE since young I was young thinking if put 1M to FD already get 100K, and at that time even 1K seems a lot. This is the reason why my initial investment strategy was more towards high DY counters. I have yet to reach my FIRE goal though since I'm looking to draw from EPF dividend only when I retire.
*
I never used FD, EPF or amanah saham in my calculations. I have always rely on high dividend stocks. Only recently I switch to low yield high growth stocks.

Personally i do not have problem occupying my free time. Altho already mid of 40, i am still gaming 2-8 hours per day. When there is new game out, if it is my cup of team, i could even play 6-16 hours a day. In certain situation i apply leave and sit in-front of the PC play from morning until night, and i ask my wife to bungkus for me, i can be damn extreme when i am doing something i love. When i was doing coding, i could sit in-front of my PC for 12-16 hours too, now no more though.

For gaming, besides i really love it, another reason is i could keep forcing my brain to think / analyse / remember things.

My wife is a gamer too, she got a Switch and PS5 (mine is a PS5 Pro), she finished many games such as Zelda, Dragon Quest Build 1-2, etc. She has a kara-ok room and she has retired for more than 3 years now.

Same as you, i wanted to FIRE when i was young, and that time i also fully relied on EPF. Things changed a lot in recent years and i had the chance to save the money i can never imagine i could have, thus i am speeding up the FIRE faster than planned.

Playing games can bring you to another world, strengthen hands and eye coordination.

love what you do, you will have the stamina
to stay even in extended time

hate what you do every minute feels like eternity
you will have no stamina and
want to quit before half-time
to retire early.

passion makes time disappear
emptiness makes every minute heavy
one can stay longer
the other would retire early.... biggrin.gif

I used to be able to play games overnight, when there is a new Warcraft/expansion coming out, I played whole night just to go through all the missions. But nowadays I hardly do it, not sure is a sign of maturity or the current games not so fun. My other hobby (coding) is indeed my current job, but I also won't spend like too long on it - not because I don't like but I rather spend some time on other perspective to refresh my mind should I come to any road block on my work.

Personally i think gaming has nothing to do with maturity. Same for reading comics, etc things that we do when we were young. Some guys scared people might say they are still kids cos of gaming and comics, well, personally, i have a kid in my body forever. If maturity = woman and luxury cars, i have them too.

Warcraft was such a great game but i didn't play it. My first mmorpg was Runescape, still at college that time and the phone bill shocked me (tmnet/jaring era). I played FF14 for many years before i stopped it. Actually there are lots of fun games but just a matter if you willing to try them or not. Recently the BlackMyth Wukong, Expedition33, Monster Hunter Wild, Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater Remake, Silent Hill 2 Remake, and some new games are quite good.

If you are into fighting games u can try Tekken or Street Fighter 6, etc, the scene is pretty competitive world wide, many pro-gamers are already 45+- and still competing. The prize in recent years are crazy, biggest one the champions could get USD 1mil-1.5mil, and if it is the one held by Saudi prince, it even cover all the tax to make sure your bank account receives exactly USD1mil - USD 1.5mil. Now we are talking about FIRE.

I first started this thread exactly 4 years ago. I am 50 already. i spend most of my times  with my child and doing volunteering work.

I am actually quite happy my financials (this I have to thanks everyone here for contributing ideas and suggestions)  notworthy.gif

My financials  is  more than RM6 million now, I have no loan or mortgage. What I have been doing for the past 4 years is :
- minus amount of my FD, 30% of my portfolio
- only hold dividend paying and blue chips in KLSE (Maybank, Tenaga, RHB, IGBreit, PavReit)
- bought 3 SG banks and 3 reits in SGX
- bought gold (physical and etf), today is 10% of my portfolio

Again, Thank you everyone here wub.gif

Congrats!
I have never FIREd.
But i am 63 years now. Retired and still consulting. AND travelling! thumbup.gif
My 2 children are graduated and living in Australia. They just bought their own properties. I paid for their down payments. laugh.gif

Your financials are very impressive! After paying for the children's education and property down payments, i am left with only pittance.
My investments are similar to yours.
- NO FD. Everything cash in EPF- 30% of portfolio
- NO KLSE
- Started investing in SGX in 2011. Banks and REITs for dividends. Approx 25% of portfolio.
- LONGGGGG Gold since 2002. Gold paid for my children's education and property. Physical Gold is now 28% of my portfolio due the rise in price in the last 2 years. Gold/silver miners make up another 20% of my portfolio due to the astronomical rise recently.

Wishing you the best. thumbup.gif

Depending on which city. Sydney is out of whack. Houses are like average $1.5 million
Perth is much cheaper. Approx $750k average.
Melbourne is approx $1mil average.

So education is approx $400k and house downpayment of approx $500k
equals $900k = RM2.48 million in today's rate.

as a malaysian i wont even consider Australia as my sister is there for almost 30 years
once ur kids go there (in this case i refer to my sister) they never wanted to come back
now 30 years plus she has her own family and made it in life she say this to me - study australia ok, have family here = no family
dont get me wrong she has a wealthy and loving husband, she has a good income job, she has kids in australia
now she is there 30+ years and her kids are all adult
her kids is a product of australian made, australian groom, pure australian manage
here comes the problem:
1. culture and tradition all gone
2. empty nester - kids move out when there are 18, some 19 and some 20 and very young age
3. loneliness (husband still alive)

money wont fix any of the above problem

me and her grow up in a big big big family, we stay in kampung house and inside 1 house got 4 generation
