haha, in most forums i've been too, it seems bassists got a lot to say ... to make up for all the time spent quietly in the background when playing with their bands ... i speak from experience ... smile.gif lol ...

its not about the guitarist, but the power of the almighty riff.

look at AC/DC, their intros itself is enough to get ppl moving, and some of their songs the bass usually doesnt come in til bridge or chorus.
how about acoustic blues?
and metallica's '...and justice for all' tongue.gif
heck, dimebag and vinnie paul can throw a damn good groove by themselves.

anyway, asking that question is like asking...how many jaco pastarius are there today...
its dumb and pointless as there can be only one...
so come let me slice your head off tongue.gif

There's something called a search engine, by Google or Yahoo, if you type in Bass Guitar Lessons or something like that, you'll discover whole new worlds ... smile.gif

So what's this argument about bass and guitar ... can't we all make music together happily and peacefully? After all, guitars rule the world and bass makes the world go around ....

Shoo shoo everdying, tongue.gif. Nah, just joking, tongue.gif. i highly respect u as the sg maestro smile.gif. but come now, grab urself a sg bass and join in the fun yea? tongue.gif

Glad to be on the first page of V2!!! or am i still on the first page? tongue.gif

How to get more attention than guitarists? simple, do a jumping stunt on the bass amp, and let the amp topple, instant limelight. (dat was wat happened at last year's mmu battle of the bands with the bassist from a band called eve, tongue.gif, so disgraceful). tongue.gif. Ask alda and he'll give u the full details of the stunt and how it went awry.

Another way to gain attention? wear extremely nerdy thick glasses and comb ur hair "karipap" style, and play your bass 90 degrees style, (u know, the hold up high like my chemical romance guitarist 1). another instant limelight. i still remember this bassist dat did the exact same thing and was given a proper 3 minute video coverage during sound check, tongue.gif. The rest of the band? all in the dark la, haha. lots of things u can learn from uni gigs tongue.gif, where there isn't much band-ism going on, just a pure melee between the guitarist and bassist, tongue.gif. Oh yea, sometimes keyboards included too tongue.gif

Screw keyboarders. I hate them tongue.gif . Only those i've met so far of course laugh.gif

They're so arrogant and think just because they can programme drums and bass and strings and etc etc, they don't need a band.

Jamerson is proof enough for me. tongue.gif

As for the vids, can't really get into this type of music. Although this piece is quite a good finger exercise. Looks like there's quite some string skipping going on there. But i thought the slapping didn't fit. Sounded like mark king trying to do metal laugh.gif .

Bassix: Erm, im sorry that u only met arrogant keyboards so far (how can keyboards be arrogant u might ask? tongue.gif, dun like to use the word keyboardists). If u're lucky (as i am), u might stumble upon some of the most humble yet great keyboards around. I personally enjoy playing with these rare find that truly defines the band as a whole. smile.gif

crazychris: How big is the amp? erm... hmmm... just a big hughes and kettner cab+head if i remember correctly, argh! tongue.gif. I dun go on frenster anymore, so dat's not a new bass, it's a really old one, a really good one tongue.gif. Im more into facebook now. Facebook anyone?

and the guy in the video is insane.

well, lucky for you then. I've always met morons who agree to join the band and then 5 minutes before a session, they call up to say "well i've been thinking about it and your music is not really my type anyway".... shakehead.gif

They could have said it before they agreed right? Wasting studio fees....

the bass 400+ weighs about 20++kg. Almost the same as the strategy 400.

In terms of sound, it's crunch cannot compare to an ampeg. But clean is nice warm and fuzzy if you turn the gain slightly up.

oh, dear! u may have shorted the preamp, blowing it ... it's important to remember that these preamps work on the battery's DC output, so positive to positive and negative to negative ... on a much bigger scale, imagine connecting the red and black terminals of your car battery in reverse!

if your bass has no passive option, then you have to replace the preamp ... best to get it checked by a technician ... what bass is this?

No idea, man ... you better check with a tech. He'll tell you exactly what's wrong and suggest options.

im using a B2.1u currentli
honestli its addictive....

it adds color to ur bass tone...
since my bass tone is very dry...the effect pedal make it reali wet
and i cant liv without the pedal now...
n the drum machine is a bonus

gt mine at rm500
may b u can get the B2
cheaper

effects are nice to play around and experiment with. Samplers are a waste of money unless the basic tone is already good. Then a sampler enhances the sound if you tune it properly. If your base tone is crappy, then a sampler won't do much to help.

Anyway, as a beginner there's really no big risk as long as you keep getting the cheapest stuff possible. There's always a price to be paid until you learn enough to decide what you need and what you dont and also until you train your ear up to listen for what is good and what is not.

The ampworks looks like a pretty decent buy for 250. Samplers and effects to play around with. Although i doubt it would do wonders for you. Like everything else, you have to pay a fortune for good tone mad.gif biggrin.gif

i'm starving for a good song to practise bass on... i think my playing has gone stagnant... no improvement at all... any suggestions..?

currently i'm listening to a lot of dave matthews band... so i've been playing the song "crush" and "#41" a lot... i don't know if any of u guys listen to dmb here...

so if any of u have any good song for a bass noob like me to listen or play along with that'd be great...

adios muchachos...

If you're looking for funky oldies tongue.gif , listen to brickhouse by the commodores. And yes the singer is lionel richie. I wouldn't have believed it at first either.

Papanic, playing with a band, i'd get more than 60 watts if u have resources to get it. Hard hitting drummers and out of control guitarists will drown out the bass. Plus even if u could hear the bass its gonna have crappy tone and i'd bet the amp is already clipping past its limits, which is ok if its a tube but i dun think dats the case here. haha.

But in the end its all about control lar, just ask the rest of the fellers to soften down. Get moon gel for ur drummer. Coz if everyones blasting, u gonna have another problem, cant hear the vocals. Hahaha...

Foogie, get new strings for BOTB finals man!!! Wooho!!!!

most here would probably recommend SX. As for me, i had a noname bass for my first bass and it served me well enough. As a beginner all you really need is a piece of wood with 4 strings strung up that is capable of making some noise. Try 2nd hand battered up basses. They'll be more than good enough.

While Bassix makes a point, here's my take ... do you really want to buy a RM200 battered bass that has been through who knows what? Check out any jamming studio that's been around for at least 5 years, and take a look at the studio bass ... .lol ...

On the other hand, if you spend around RM400-500 for a new SX or Hofma or Pyramid, you get the chance to thrash and abuse it on a clean slate ... lol ....

ha ha biggrin.gif ... if someone's selling a bass for rm200, u can bet "battered" would be among its qualities ... i've seen a number of these, the first owner bought it to "have a bit of fun", and second owner "for a bit of a bash aorund" ... actually, if you can find a used SX in good condition, could be the answer ...

MMU is on sem break, most ppl r home. Maybe their hometown pc not coonected to broadband or just too lazy to come online....or busy lepak with kawan. Anyways happy Raya to all!!!

Anyways i went to studio for a recording session, realised my SX just aint cutting anymore, for recording at least. Firstly there are some 'dead spots' in the fret board, notes played on that fret just come out softer volume wise.
Then my slides are also soft, duno y.
And the thing dat really got to the sound engineer was the loud hissing/humming. Hahaha. Maybe its the wiring or shielding or just the stock pickups, i duno. So switched to Alda's Fender Highway One...no more dead spots or soft sliding but there was still buzzing/humming altho much less noticable. And if anyone is wondering, no i didn't play it single coil mode, both p'ups were full on, which make them humbucking. Tone knob set to full also.

Well, recording in a studio has been good experience for me. U realize things dat u normally wont when u practice/gig.

Man i need a real Fender...tapi tak ada duit. Sedih sekali. But recently been dreaming of Ricks, especially those in Fireglo finish. Huhuhu...dats even more expensive, darnnit.

NZX - Nice Fenders always available at HOB, if you have the budget ... smile.gif ... as for Ric, be warned that you have to adjust your playing style quite a bit ... i'm using Rics for Samarkand now, and the past 4 months of regular Ric usage still isn't enought to get me totally comfortable ... but the tone, man ... whichever amp you use, it's a Ric sound!

Ric prices these days are becoming quite silly, though .... too much demand, not enough supply ... I can sell my three-year-old Ric for 30% more than what I paid for it!

Buy: Sorry, no such luck, no Ric dealer here and extremely rare that one turns up for sale at all. In the past five years, I've known of only one Ric bass that was put up for sale.

Find: Well, you can always visit HOB to check out what a Ric bass feels and looks like. I've got a 4003 and a 4001, both different sort of beasts ...

If you order new through Ric Asia, via Japan, that is, or through any US dealers willing to ship here (again, a rarity), the waiting list is 12-24 months. Actually, I am on the waiting list for another 4003 too ... blush.gif

Heheh, thanks.
Anyways, I was just wondering. How many of you guys pick, and how many do fingerstyle, or even combine both?
I have issues trying to produce the palm muting effect while playing fingerstyle. I figured out a way to do it, but it's annoying and you can't go too fast. Any ideas?

i use double thumb and double pop when trying to play palm mute. The speed is ok for me. I never need to go fast with the songs i play.

I never use a pick because, well i can't tongue.gif .

LOL I somehow have the exact opposite of that man. I can't get a nice warm tone from picking.... only seem to find bright in-your-face tones.
Oh, and for the 3-fingers thing, start out with "Iron Maiden - The Trooper" A friend of mine recommended it to me as a "3 fingerstyle on bass for dummies". It actually works lol. thumbup.gif

@Bassix==> can you elaborate on the double thumb and double pop? I never really understood those. I can do regular slap & pop but thats about it. hmm.gif

just go youtube and search. Since wooten became so famous this technique is all over the place.

Actually i do not double thump or double pop. Instead of slapping with my thumb i pluck like how a classical player would. It's basically like playing classical fingerstyle cept with the double thump-ish method as in after i pluck with my thumb i flick it out again to pluck the same string again. So it's more like double plucking. The other 2 fingers are just normal plucking, nothing special.

Boss ODB-3 works just fine, but you have to keep playing with the EQ depending on which range of notes you want to use more. You have to be a treble and midrange whore, usually, but dont be afraid to experiment. tongue.gif
It actually sounds wicked on MT-2, but that's for guitars, so another story for another time.

lol, raptor might have something to say about bass effects tongue.gif.

anyways, double thumb rocks, the tone produced is beyond comparison. talk about dynamics and techniques smile.gif. u should be real proud to be able to pull it off, bassix. well, i tried, but i cant even come close to actually being able to play it tongue.gif. kudos to victor wooten. using a pick? tongue.gif. i can never use a pick for a bass. i simply wud accidentally drop it everytime i try tongue.gif.

Hehe, i can't really pull it off. I just cheat along the way tongue.gif ....shhhhh laugh.gif
Well i don't use it like victor wooten uses it. Not as well anyway. But his style of music is not really mine. Too much going on in it (Except in Flecktones. I like his stuff there). Although i have to admit that he does have many wicked techniques up his sleeve.

and notice his humility smile.gif. very similar to urself's, bassix biggrin.gif. i guess all great bassists are pretty humble biggrin.gif. i enjoy all his video lessons on utube. even the ones where he just talks about his influences and experiences. might seem boring to some, but i learned so much more from there than from his double thumbing lessons tongue.gif. we can see how he's been positively built up from these patriarchs of bass.

im glad wooten and a bunch of other great names have proven that great basslines are not just made up from a confusing mix of tens of notes in a single bar. smile.gif.

Well yeah, but sometimes i get the impression that he contradicts himself. But it is showbiz after all. A good bassline is not going to get you anywhere these days. You need some flashy stuff if you want to get noticed. nod.gif

Yo peeps..!!!

I just pickup up playing with a pick few months ago, for my bands recording purposes lar, used it on one punk rock-ish feel song. Brighter n more aggressive tone, stands out more. But more commonly finger picking lar, more control over dynamics for me. I damn noob at slapping, hahaha!!!

Foogie, pergi KL tak ajak me lar, go see Samarkand also tak ajak!!! Results how? good? I passes all, thank goodness!!

edit : one more thing, picking too hard (high & in the moment, haha) will result in the sound jadi distorted. Gain too high? I guess...duno lar. But pickup volume level is almost turned full on. But it never happens when finger picking, only when use pick.

No i just pluck instead of slap. Pluck with the thumb, if that makes any sense. And the upward stroke is the same only with a little less force so the strings don't slap back on the frets to get that percussive tone.

dude...!!! I not selling lar ok. THe shit does rock hard...haha
But it would be redundant if u had an active bass.
I like the overdrive on the BDDI, nice.
Maybe next time i will sell lar, to get the prog BDDI.

Fender...?? My dream of a fender....continues. haha. no $$$.
U when gonna get fender lar foogie? Or terus get warwick or modulus or something.

Neeways PG165 recording update for u, instrments all settled, next week vocals. After dat should be mixing on the sound engineers part. But we need more $$ for mastering maybe by Nick Lee. THen more $$ for reproducing CD, printing, cases....
Poetic Ammo got it right...its all about the $$$

@chris ==> yarr weight usually contributes to tone.
Most of the time the heavier ones have a more "solid" tone, and often slightly better sustain.
My BC Rich is heavier than epi les paul ultra.....but sounds freaking awesome.

Well, I stand still at home due to the limited space.
But moving in a imaginary "boundary" on stage. sweat.gif

Local dunno, but I've seen Manring use it before.

liew90kw: I think you can get Kahler bridges instead of Floyd Rose. You can buy it stock but you have to modify your bass to use it. And i wouldn't go digging wood out of my bass body. Neck bending is good enough. Even though i don't find much use for it.

yeah...bend it forward(outwards), the tension of the string will be less hence lower the note. Same as trem bridge, but instead of bending the bridge, u bend the neck lar. But trem wan also do other way round get higher note, neck i think very difficult to do dat. Plus i wouldnt wanna bend my neck lar, takut!!! hahaha

i think you meant holding your bass tight with your right hand.

And if you play lefty then it's the other way round

Obviously, you haven't heard of Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk ...they've been doing it for 30-40 years, even prior to the midi era, with just synths. In fact, Kraftwerk's latest tour features all members on .,.. laptops ... ha ha ha ... fortunately, they make some cerebral electronic music.

I plan to get a cheap amp maybe 15 watts and upgrade when I have more cash later.

What I really like is the thin neck. The SX is rather large for my tiny hand..

hehe.. I have no experience with the B-50 and raptor's yamaha BB414

Be sure you upgrade your amp as soon as possible as its widely known that the amp contributes allot to the tone.

But if you want further information you can read the review here.

i use the ltd b50, i bought it last year for 1.1k.
its a good bass to begin, dont expect too much bcos its just a passive cheap ltd without emg pickups.
rm980 its quite worth, but play it and make sure u like it b4 you buy.
wish u good luck.

Every component on the bass or any instrument for the matter builds part of the tone. Change one thing and you get a different sound characteristic. PUs are oni one example. I changed my bridge on my bass once and now i have a different sound as well because the resonance in the strings are different.

I don't think you'd get better sound (unless your current PUs are really crap), just different sound

Hear hear, i second that! Plus, different players may be able to get something different from the way they play. the godin freeway is a pretty decent bass ...why not start with a proper set-up and a fresh set of good strings ....

good grief strings. I asked the guy at the shop for mellow strings and i trusted him because i was in a hurry. When i put them on and destroyed my old strings, i discovered to my horror, he sold me ultra-bright ones.
Now I have to wait till they rust/snap/just plain DIE before i get a new set. And this time, I'm gonna hand-pick them and make sure they're MELLOW.

thanks for the advice. But it seems the Stock PUs of my Bass isnt that good.
It does create some unwanted sound while you're playing. But it is pretty much decent to me.
I heard from other ppl saying that EMG PJ pickups or Basslines are way better.

if comparing stock pups on an entry level bass
im certain tat a bassline or barts can pawn it down
unless the bass oredi cost like a few k
than as bassix say smile.gif diff sound characteristix

i stil like the bright strings
easier to cut thru the muddy mix haha
about the fast fret
do u guys apply it den wipe it wit the cloth
den kept it...
or leave the oil on strings, dont wipe it and store it?

thanks for the advice. But it seems the Stock PUs of my Bass isnt that good.
It does create some unwanted sound while you're playing. But it is pretty much decent to me.
I heard from other ppl saying that EMG PJ pickups or Basslines are way better.
*
unwanted sound could be the shileding. go to a lutheir and get the electornics properly shield. my Ltd was making a hell lotsa noise untill i shielded it cos it was more noticeble if u got a ton of effect going thru the board and the amps. another way to do it is to line it alluminium foil heard that works also

It's for strat but modify it a little for jazz bass and it works.

dunno, i've been using planet waves all this time and totally no humming or buzzing. Even my cheapo cable doesn't hum or buzz.

The only cable that hums and buzzes that i have ever used was some strange super sensitive cable. But that's a special case. If you wound up that cable into a loop you could probably pick up FM waves and stuff like that. Once i think i even heard the 8 o clock news on my amp with that cable tongue.gif

Totally agree with you. If i wanna buy expensive cable also, i look for the gaya gaya ones only... well not really, i look for ropes tongue.gif. Are ropes generally more durable than normal cables? My cables spoil so often, i need to look for really durable ones, not really good sounding ones, coz all that signal preservation watever nonsense really makes no sense to me whatsoever. So are ropes generally better? or u guys have any other Economical alternatives? smile.gif.

Do look at Warwick Corvette Std, too bad the swee lee sale had just ended 2 weeks ago.. sad.gif. Don't worry, i missed it too.
Should be a great buy if u're getting it from singapore smile.gif.
Another alternative would be a typical fender P-bass, maybe a japanese made one. I'm not good at giving suggestions, but i tried my best tongue.gif, assuming u were once a musicman dude trying to look at the world in a different perspective smile.gif. Other threaders should have better suggestions, definitely, i'm absolutely inferior to all of them here smile.gif.

Ibanez BTB205? should fit pretty nicely in your budget and still have quite a few extra cash left tongue.gif. But for me, if i have rm2000, i wud wait to see if anyone is selling a second handed fender precision or a fender jazz smile.gif. do look at OLP also, they're really good, erm, well, some of them. I've tried one that is really really bad, one dat is OK, and one dat is really really good (so good, i almost accidentally took it back from the jam studio) tongue.gif. So make sure u try first. Do drop by @ JS music jalan imbi. The nicest music storepeople u will ever come across. smile.gif. I'm sure crazychris would testify to dat.

P.S. back to my question, are rope cables like fender rope generally better in terms of durability? Or do they make it just for show? tongue.gif.

err... when u say rope does that mean those cables that looks like cable seterika?? like some sort of woven exterior?

i have a couple of those i bought in the states... yes they are really durable... i mean they've lasted for more than 7 years... the only problem i have is that they are damn stiff so when they are tangled it's really hard to get them straightened up.... so now i switch to planet wave... the one with the shielded end... softer plus got that cable tie on it... hehehe... but maybe doesn't last as long...

Greetings,
I went to Lepo (a local music store) today, but I can't find any BTB205. Those that cought my eyes are GSRX 305 (RM1395) and BTB 555MP (RM2750). BTB 555MP sounds great and nice to grip and play although I'm not really used to 5-strings basses. I quite like the outlook of the bass too, but would be nicer if got some other colour other than light brown. BUT, the price is RM2750. So, is BTB 205 something like BTB555MP? how bout the price? and do you mind to give me the full address of JS music, cause I'm not from W.Malaysia...Thanks alot!

Actually, while Fender owns Squier and Gibson owns Epiphone, Ernie Ball/MM has nothing to do with OLP. OLP pays EB a royalty fee to copy the MM design ... so they can market their product in US and Europe without fear of copyright infringement. And which is why OLP is more expensive than SX.
Last I heard, OLP was discontinuing making MM copies ...

those are drumming rudiments xD Had to learn them at some point.

Learning the random and odd timings off marching snare rudiments is interesting, because it adds a zest to your sound and give you more options when playing.

rudiments just plainly mean basic elements. In the drumming/rhythmic world it's singles, doubles, paradiddles, triplets...etc. Basically timing and stuff to do with timing and timing patterns.

In the harmonic world rudiments are like scales, arpeggios, intervals etc. Melodic stuff.

And in the bass world, it would be pretty much a combination of both. Practicing those boring 8th notes with a metronome, shuffle grooves, straight grooves, odd grooves, chromatic scales, whole tone scales, arpeggios, chordal inversions...the list goes on.

So if you have nothing else better to play and still feel like playing the bass, then do rudiments. Never hurts. Although really really boring

actually i do bang around occasionally on the drums and to be quite honest it's the hardest thing i've ever done. Or tried to do. When you try to control your attack with those sticks it's quite hard because they're so long. Bassists have it easy only having to control their fingers or a pick tongue.gif laugh.gif

I think the key to practicing is to relax. Don't even bother trying to build up speed. Speed comes naturally when you have all those muscles trained and controlled. I've never practiced above 100bpm before. The only time i turn the metronome up is to test myself on how fast i can go. But the real practice takes place at 100bpm and most of the time even slower about 60 or so.

And now i've totally gone back to stone age with my bass playing because of neglecting rudiments. So busy with other stuff *sigh*... mad.gif
So don't neglect your rudiments, it could be disastrous to your playing.

Happy 2008 indeed, my fellow low end assasins tongue.gif.

May 2008 be a year where you receive lots of bassing goodies from your parents, loved ones, etc. May it be a year where all of your bass needs are met, especially in the area of tones, lines, techniques and stuffs. May you continue to find new possibilities in your daily GAS for newer and more different sounding stuffs than what you already have, even though you don't really need them. May all your strings stay intact, all your necks in proper bend, and all your fingers in one piece (as in, 5 left fingers, and at least 3 right fingers for obvious reasons). Have a great low end 2008 my dear low end sifus, even though u guys are extremely cruel in the area of intimidation.... I forgive yall, for it drives me to learn, learn, and LEARN! biggrin.gif. So, thanks guys, without u guys, how boring can bassing be? tongue.gif

no wonder la there are people saying "the warmth of paper, and the clear punchy attack of aluminum".. huhu

was wondering where this thread went.

anyways, how many bassists at LYN use distortion frequently?
and how many of you (like me) think the Effects companies should put more effort into bass pedals. Make them sound like distortion, not shytfuzz.

tube mahal la bang.....

I'm looking for distortions that can give me a good, precise tone but it still has that nasty crunch.

As far as i know, only boss has them....and the ODB-3 sounds like shytfuzz.

the easiest way of knowing what to get is to check out the gear of artists with the tone you want.

The general rule is, sound and price are proportionally related. The better the sound, the higher the price.

But all this coming from an anti-pedal person; so you might just want to ignore me on this tongue.gif

you're looking for bass distortion/overdrive?

Gallien Krueger DieselDawg - pure evil distortion

EBS ValveDrive & MultiDrive - tasty OD and distortion. ValveDrive is tube and I have one.

MXR DI80 - a DI box and distortion, quite useable.

Fulltone - rated pretty highly.

Boss, Behringer distortion for teenage girls on helium ... smile.gif

hmmmm, any sound samples for them?
I'm living off my ODB-3 sampling on my Zoom and I'm trying hard not to commit suicide from the fact it sounds so.......bad... when i turn the gain up.

I almost bought a MT-2 for my bass. doh.gif

You planning on ordering from net?

It's always better to test it before you buy it. Especially if you're intending on using it as your main instrument and not for fun/show/etc. But I don't really think it's that much lighter than your regular RBX models. Just a little lighter. It's still solid wood after all. Just a different type of wood.

dude, it looks like an XboX 360 controller =.=

If you like it, why not?

But I personally prefer the "american" brands, so to speak. I prefer large fret scaling, and asian brands usually have smaller fret scaling (since we all have small hands, duh).

Uhh that 1 you meant as in Ibanez' BTB range right? I think for Yamaha it's BB.

I held one of those Yamaha game console controllers at a shop, didnt test it tho coz i only saw it on the way out. It REALLY is light!!! I dunno if i can accurately say its neck heavy or not but i've been playing the usual basses all my life and it feels neck heavy to me. Not sure if the neck will dive when u wear it on a strap tho. As i know, the top n bottom sides and hardwood, sandwiching soft "tonewoods" in the middle. Dats wut makes it so light. I think it will will definately take the spotlight away from lead vocals/guitars when u gig with one of those =)

The yamaha shop in mid valley has one there, dats where i saw it, go n test n tell us how it is lar. OOh, and i forgot the shops name lar, only know its owned by yamaha music. They dun call the shop yamaha coz they also sell Fenders and Ibz there. But theres lots of Yamahas there of coz, a 12k BB2NE and a JM2 also. I tested the TRB1004, i like!!!! tapi 3.7k!!!! =(

edit:
OOh yeah, any idea how much changing the nut for a J bazz would cost? Wuts better or more cost effective? bone? brass?

any tips on how to make a J sound as close as it can to a P without rewiring it? anyone? R korean made Squires good? Im guessing better than Indon/China ones lar, true? did any MIK squire P's come with basswood body?

thanks!!!

Not a Fender pro (far from it really...) here but I had my fair share. Can't really say about those bone or brass nuts.

Ps got some added mids growl (at least that's how I can describe it), I happen to own an old Yamaha ERB 300II PJ for years and had played both Fender and Squire Js and Ps. Thing is when it comes to tonal choices, I personally think that a J can easily cover that aspect over a P. Of course I can't say this out loud for everyone. Tried a J with hotter (I forgot which; Basslines or DiMarzio) pup set, it can give a P a good run but that still means that you should consider a pup transplant. The easiest method maybe is to notch up some more mids, level the lows and kill off the highs at EQs (choose your way; preamp or amp w/e works). Won't simulate a P exactly for sure but hey almost there is better than nowhere.

IMO these days, Squires are generally fine wherever MIx they'd come from. I'd just worry about the woods and assembly quality.

My 2 centslah. Let's wait for other low end gurus like bassraptor or bassix bros' posts. Should be interesting.

My question is, why would you want to make a Jazz bass sound like a P bass?

A P bass is like meat, fat and potatoes. A Jazz bass is like that, but with leaner meat and enough room left for some dessert. Which means you can't have your fat and eat it ... smile.gif

The idea is to find the sort of bass that takes the bass out of the equation - it's just you, your hands and fingers, your creativity and the bloody amp. The bass does what you want it do to. Not all basses to that, but someday you'll find that bass, and then, you'll find it pointless to get any other bass. so keep playing and looking ... no shortcuts.

And to add to that, here's a little story. I always wanted the P-sound. But i bought an L-2000 (because the colour was cool). And then a fretless (because it looked cool). And then a hollow-body with J-style PUs (because it also looked cool). Guess what, still no P-sound today.

Moral: If you want P-sound get a P.

oh, i'm not a guru ... just a helpless sod struggling to play better bass. the more i learn, the more of what i already know becomes less significant ... so all i have is a backlog of insignificant knowledge, collected over the years. sometimes, it's nicer to be young and naive, and to be dangerous with what you think know for sure ... you can be gungho and impress the world that way ... smile.gif

I kinda did something opposite, to some degree. I hate how the strings all have different volumes because of the pickup's natural conditioning, and i can't fit an active into my bass (not that i want one tho). What i tried to do was balance out all the string volume with my EQ. Heres the story lol:
Mine came with a single P in mid position, so I started with an advantage. P already has a darker sound with more midrange and bass than a J, and it was parked in the middle, so I got an equal natural balance from the strings laugh.gif
so my EQ is now a / line.

Just me, but I liked the idea of balancing string volumes so there wont be an awkward change in volume as i string skip and jump all over the place.

I was actually wondering what would happen if you had a P at bridge and a J at neck, since that would be a natural balancing of string tonality and pickup attributes. Anyone has a bass with that setup?

i usually see basses with the following setups:

1. single J at bridge
2. single P at neck
3. J bridge P neck
4. dual Js

I don't think I've seen a P at bridge and J at neck before.

i would add double 'P' to this ... Warwick had a limited edition model and Fender used to make one in the 1980s. as for P at bridge and J at neck, Leo and his ilk may have experimented and found no merit to further pursue it ... which is not to say you still cannot persuade a custom maker, like GIM, to make a bass with a such a configuration.

there's also MM, J & MM, P & MM, double MM ...

i was actually considering approaching GIM after a save up more money (no thanks to GASing lately), but I wanted to hear for myself what a bass with that configuration would do.
I'm still at the "let's experiment and find some weird wacky sounds" stage in my musical life laugh.gif

never really took a liking to MMs cause i think they look like super-sized humbuckers.

maybe the "single J" on the tele bass is actually a vintage single-coil P thingie ... like this?

sounds like a good thing. i'll keep in touch for arranging a drop-by to test whenever i'm free.

the single J looked more like the standard Js you'd see come stock on a bass. more like:

http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/bass...sjb5_stack_for/

minus the fact that this one is branded and is really good, but yeah.
The bass wasn't a tele, but it sure as heck sounded like a bass version of it. that thing was so bright i could have cut through a mosh pit with it.

you're looking for bass distortion/overdrive?

Gallien Krueger DieselDawg - pure evil distortion

EBS ValveDrive & MultiDrive - tasty OD and distortion. ValveDrive is tube and I have one.

MXR DI80 - a DI box and distortion, quite useable.

Fulltone - rated pretty highly.
Boss, Behringer distortion for teenage girls on helium ... smile.gif

hissing is usually an electronics problem, humming is usually a shielding/grounding problem. So if you have both, then buy a new bass laugh.gif

Just kidding. Since it's double single coil, there are some websites on DIY shielding using aluminium and copper foils. Doesn't require any drilling or destroying of your body. Basically foil and double sided tape/glue. I read one but it's for a strat. http://www.guitarnuts.com/wiring/shielding/shield3.php

But a little modifications and it should work for any other guitar/bass.

Mainly I want to shield it with an aluminium foil but my bass doesnt have pickup guard like the strat..
or is it the same as I can open it from the back.. I guest I'm gonna try it..

For the soldering things.. its kinda scary to do la... sweat.gif

Otherwise, I'll met Christ and get a little discount eh.. hehe

I'm not very informed on technical stuff, but i think if the problem is with your PUs, then no matter how you shield it, it will still hum. Only abit softer. So before you spend money trying to fix this problem, ask yourself if it's absolutely necessary to have a hum free instrument. I read an article where Marcus Miller was ask about his tone. He uses a jazz bass and whenever he turns the volumes of the PUs to different levels, the humbucking effect disappears. And so he always got complaints from his soundman. But he said when the music starts the hum is not noticable anyway, so it doesn't matter. So what he does is balance them when the soundman complains, and turn it back down when the music starts and the soundman won't notice anything anyway. tongue.gif

well, bass effects are generally ignored, so i've been resorting to using guitar effects for my bass most of the time.
i was so desperate to get a good bass distortion for my lead parts that i almost bought a digitech death metal for it.

Ahaks, your words truly make me think for this couple of days.. hehe
actually the thing doesnt seems to have problem while i'm using my 70watt harke.. but when using it with laney stack at the studio and its also connected to the PA, the humming from the PA kinda annoying. but still, i can control it with my volume knob while not playing.. while play, it doesnt too noticeable lorr. biggrin.gif
yah, single PU does humming! so do buying humbucker like MM if you are consider humming thing rite.. huhu

but i still keen to try those NS-2 la.. anyone have tried it with any bass might shared.. hmm.gif
bcoz some noise gate heard seems to kill the tone..

Thanks for the advice bro.. i've learn something.. thumbup.gif

check this connection again. Ground loops usually cause humming problems. However i think it's not affected by the volume knobs. It's just a constant hum. But just double check it. You never know maybe that's the cause after all. No harm checking.

well depends i use a lot of distortion. but lately i just use the Zoom B2.1u and a Boss limiter to tweak the sound. so far so good in live. and too many effects to leceh to set-up on stage i dun have like a roadie or anything ;p

it kinda depends on what im looking for at that particular moment... sometimes i just want a plain volume boodt, sometimes i want a vintage overdrive, sometimes i want pure death growl. Basically, i'm hoping some efects maker gets kind enough to design bass versions of their distortion pedals, and actually give them gain controls and so on so forth. laugh.gif

The most disappointing one so far for me is the Boss ODB-3. The "distortion" knob is actually just a mixer of the clean sound and a crunchy, horrible-fuzz-from-hell tone that you can't make sense out of. I'd really like to see more advances in the bass effects market (that i think has been really ignored), but i think it'll only happen if some virtuoso bassist gets famous to the same level as the guitar greats. Maybe then they'll pay more attention to us laugh.gif

height of 3rd string too low at the bridge maybe? Or maybe fret wear? Maybe neck warp (hopefully not)? Could be alot of stuff.

having used SWR amps extensively, let me first warn you that the LA series is the worst possible kind of rubbish to have emerged with the SWR name on it.

as for the ampeg, you'll be paying loads of money for a name that's now being made in vietnam.

explore the line 6 lowdown 10 and roland's cube series instead ... or even the fender bassman series ... all better value

then again, it's your money ... biggrin.gif

Aren't all strings standard? I thought for a headless bass you just string it upside down. No?

You need double-ball end strings for headless basses ... there're no conventional machines heads to wrap them around ... hard to find here, maybe in s'pore ...

You need double-ball end strings for headless basses ... there're no conventional machines heads to wrap them around ... hard to find here, maybe in s'pore ...
aahh...singapore.... haiz... unfortunately i dun have any friend that i can ask to tapau the string for me.. is there anyone knows any shop in singapore that have those strings and the provide delivery to malaysia with an online purchase order? >_<

and lordie, i cant find any headless steinberger either around. mine one is a Hohner B2A with a Steinberger bridge which actually does looks like the stenberger. the small bass guitar which when u carry it with a gigbag, looks like you;re carrying a gun..... hahaha....

Any suggestions for a guitarist who wants to learn some bass and looking for a cheaper bass? Checked out a few Yamaha (RBX174, 274 and 374) and Ibanez (GSR200FM, SRX300)..

Ask me anything about guitar and I'll know but bass... 4 string, 5 string?... active, passive... argghhh... I'm lost!! smile.gif

I still hold true to my philosophy for beginners of getting the cheapest bass you can find regardless of brand and sound and quality. Only thing to look for is a smooth neck and fretboard so you don't get splinters in your fingers when you play.

The cheaper the better.

Yeah but won't you want to change gear when you get better so isn't it better to get like a low-mid range axe so you won't upgrade in like 1-2 months? Any recommendations of models other than the ones I tested?

Btw, heard the Squires have electronics issues and the Ibanez/Yamahas are more reliable. Have you guys found that to be true?

in my opinion, start off with a low range guitar but not too low untill you don't feel like playing that piece of wood. this way, you will feel more motivated by being able to "upgrade" to a better guitar, kinda like rewarding yourself for improving smile.gif

Well, i guess i'm speaking for myself. I've bought lot's of things only to find out that i'm not really interested after all. So i have plenty of things lying all over the place. Just trying to save you some money. A cheap brandless bass doesn't necessarily have to sound bad. And if it does and you find out "Hey bass is quite cool after all" then upgrading it (even after 2 months) won't be such a problem since you didn't spend that much money on it after all.

that's a good start, but im kinda into getting beginners to start with the lower-midrange items instead of complete beginner stuff.
that way when they improve they wont have to blast more cash to upgrade for something more suiting to their current ability.

that only applies if you're dead ass serious about taking up the instrument though laugh.gif

So what is a good cheaper bass for a beginner in terms of brand and model? The saleperson is also asking me to get a 5 string instead of a 4 but isn't it harder to learn?

Well low end branded instruments (example yamaha low end BBs or ibanez sdgr) cost more than most brandless ones and sometimes sound worse than them too. There is no particular brand i'd recommend because i believe in testing out to see if i like the sound or not. But if i were you, i wouldn't spend more than RM500 on one. But that's also because i'm just plain broke.

A 5 string is not harder to learn than a 4 string. And many many times the low B comes in very very handy (because of idiot vocalists who have to transpose because they can't hit the notes tongue.gif ). My advice is to get a 5 string. But i personally wouldn't because i'm a 4 string purist tongue.gif. Although i am looking for a 6 or 7 string now. Ok i'm done contradicting myself now... rclxub.gif

Was in Guitar Collection the other day and the guy was recommending this LTD one. RM990 I think. Of course, he could play and appreciate it and it was a passive one too.

Active or passive? What's the dif?

The main difference is active is more transparent and volume and tone are independent of one another. Passive instruments tend to change their tonal characteristics when you adjust the volume knob on the bass. This effect is however not to be seen as a minus point. In fact many people go after passive basses just because of this effect. All depends on music style and taste. There is no general rule that active is better than passive. Any salesman who tells you that doesn't know anything.

Thanks for the explanation bro. Really appreciate your feedback. I did notice that Fenders are still pretty much passive basses and are used by many many bands on the planet!

Guess budget wise, I'm looking at something sub RM1k and so far, the Yamaha RBX270 and Ibanez GSR200FM have caught my attention. Will try some others later during the weekend, I hope. Not much choice in Malaysia unfortunately... so was wondering if things are cheaper in Singapore? Probably the variety of models is better there?

i play both passive and active and now i am slanted towards passive more, the active bassist signals might get too hot and screw up my sound when it goes thru the pedalboard. Passive wins for me right now.

yes and singapore got very nice basses, extremely nice basses for all soft of budgets and are so much cheaper than most stores in KL but Yamaha store the prices are reasonble and carries almost the same price tag in singapore so buying a yammy stuff guarantee not heart pain when u see the price different from sg to kl, but bear in mind you get what you pay for. LTD's are good, Fender Squier are great. not sure abt how u like it when u play it, ultimately u need to pick one up and test it 1st and see how u confortable with the neck, weight, bass contour, test playing standing up and sitting down. a lot of difference.

Emm... hopefully I'll have a chance to test something this weekend. Your comments ahve made me think again about the Yamaha ones... since going down to SG already costs RM100-200... and not to mention the tax coming back.. sigh...

Guitar collection also has a small Kustom amp for around 390 I think...

Btw, you can bargain at TGS... I'm sure you can get lower than the 360 offered if you show real interest. That's the style of doing business in Malaysia unfortunately... sad.gif

usually the low notes tend to be distorted. But other than that i use my 25W Kustom (can't remember the model) for practice if i have to.

I tested the RM790 Squire P-bass last weekend and the sound was quite good. Action was good and I would say that the tone is more mellow and old school.

I compared that to a RM1100 Ibanez GSR205 bass (active) and wow, active basses are way louder for the same settings! More for modern stuff like rock I guess cos I couldn't get that jazzy bassy sound as I did with the Squire.

I then tried a cheaper Stagg bass just to compare and I thought the RM680 tag would result in a bad instrument. Boy was I wrong! Much more versatile than the Squire and less metallic sounding than the Ibanez. Only thing was it weighs a ton and the action wasn't as good as the Squire or Ibanez.

I think I'm going to try the Yamaha RBX270 one more time and then I'll make my decision but for RM680 before discount, the Stagg is beginning to look like my choice purchase for a beginner like myself!

I have a stagg fretless. Paid an equivalent of about RM750 for it. Can't really complain apart from the fact that they glued the 3-piece body senget. But soundwise it's ok. Although i did completely do away with the electronics. Now i'm running a bartolini on the bridge. But even the original PUs were decent enough to begin with.

Guten Tag! Thx for the reply my friend.

Actually, I tried the Yamaha RBX170 and 270 today and you know what? I actually prefer the cheaper RBX170 because it was set up better. Man, some shops really don't know how to set up their products for demo and it was disappointing that all 3 RBX270 models I tested had intonation problems. Even the sales-person didn't know how to tune properly!

So, I couldn't really test the difference between the 170 and 270 but both 170 I tried (black and blue) had better set up, pretty good sound and playability. I think I'll just get a beginner bass for learning since I can't appreciate the tone, etc of a better instrument.

One more round of testing with the Ibanez GSR200FM and GSR100 and I'll make my decision.... smile.gif

Tried the Yamaha RBX170 and 270 again a few days back. Very surprised the sound wasn't as good as I orginally thought.

Was blown away by the RBX370 though. Much more punch and clarity of tone. Very versatile too! Pity about the price tag...

Guess it's now either the Ibanez GSR200 or GSR200FM...

Kinda... when most Ps packs that ever lovely mids and picks usually adds that hefty clicks which in turn rounds off a nice drive. Things is it's still is a preferential thing.

and the thread keeps record, the same old post. They said, ah-ha! Ah-ha!

Alright, most people thinks that playing the Percision Bass with picks are the best. What do you think?

I am reviving this thread anyway..

I then tried a cheaper Stagg bass just to compare and I thought the RM680 tag would result in a bad instrument.  Boy was I wrong!  Much more versatile than the Squire and less metallic sounding than the Ibanez.  Only thing was it weighs a ton and the action wasn't as good as the Squire or Ibanez.

drool.gif yea, it really weights a ton.. doh.gif cry.gif
