Any suggestions for a guitarist who wants to learn some bass and looking for a cheaper bass? Checked out a few Yamaha (RBX174, 274 and 374) and Ibanez (GSR200FM, SRX300)..

QUOTE(Bassix @ Jul 6 2008, 02:57 AM) I still hold true to my philosophy for beginners of getting the cheapest bass you can find regardless of brand and sound and quality. Only thing to look for is a smooth neck and fretboard so you don't get splinters in your fingers when you play. Yeah but won't you want to change gear when you get better so isn't it better to get like a low-mid range axe so you won't upgrade in like 1-2 months? Any recommendations of models other than the ones I tested? The cheaper the better. Btw, heard the Squires have electronics issues and the Ibanez/Yamahas are more reliable. Have you guys found that to be true? |

QUOTE(liew90kw @ Jul 7 2008, 06:04 AM) that's a good start, but im kinda into getting beginners to start with the lower-midrange items instead of complete beginner stuff. So what is a good cheaper bass for a beginner in terms of brand and model? The saleperson is also asking me to get a 5 string instead of a 4 but isn't it harder to learn?that way when they improve they wont have to blast more cash to upgrade for something more suiting to their current ability. that only applies if you're dead ass serious about taking up the instrument though |

QUOTE(Bassix @ Jul 10 2008, 02:21 AM) The main difference is active is more transparent and volume and tone are independent of one another. Passive instruments tend to change their tonal characteristics when you adjust the volume knob on the bass. This effect is however not to be seen as a minus point. In fact many people go after passive basses just because of this effect. All depends on music style and taste. There is no general rule that active is better than passive. Any salesman who tells you that doesn't know anything. Thanks for the explanation bro. Really appreciate your feedback. I did notice that Fenders are still pretty much passive basses and are used by many many bands on the planet!Guess budget wise, I'm looking at something sub RM1k and so far, the Yamaha RBX270 and Ibanez GSR200FM have caught my attention. Will try some others later during the weekend, I hope. Not much choice in Malaysia unfortunately... so was wondering if things are cheaper in Singapore? Probably the variety of models is better there? Added on July 10, 2008, 11:38 am QUOTE(soundaddict @ Jul 8 2008, 02:57 PM) Welcome my friend. Maybe you have some advice for a newbie like me on what axe to get for a beginner (though I've played guitar for quite a while now). Cheers! QUOTE(signither @ Jul 11 2008, 01:27 AM) i'm a beginner with limited budget and can't find cheap bass amp for practice/learning.. There's a cheap RM300 Smarvo one in The Guitar Store. Ok for 4 string but when testing a 5 string, the sound became distorted...how bad does it sound if we use guitar amp for bass?? Added on July 11, 2008, 11:20 pm QUOTE(lordie @ Jul 10 2008, 01:09 PM) i play both passive and active and now i am slanted towards passive more, the active bassist signals might get too hot and screw up my sound when it goes thru the pedalboard. Passive wins for me right now. Emm... hopefully I'll have a chance to test something this weekend. Your comments ahve made me think again about the Yamaha ones... since going down to SG already costs RM100-200... and not to mention the tax coming back.. sigh...yes and singapore got very nice basses, extremely nice basses for all soft of budgets and are so much cheaper than most stores in KL but Yamaha store the prices are reasonble and carries almost the same price tag in singapore so buying a yammy stuff guarantee not heart pain when u see the price different from sg to kl, but bear in mind you get what you pay for. LTD's are good, Fender Squier are great. not sure abt how u like it when u play it, ultimately u need to pick one up and test it 1st and see how u confortable with the neck, weight, bass contour, test playing standing up and sitting down. a lot of difference. QUOTE(signither @ Jul 12 2008, 11:24 PM) thanks.. i'll check them out later Guitar collection also has a small Kustom amp for around 390 I think...Added on July 13, 2008, 7:24 pmwent to TGS at damansara today and check out that smarvo amp.. the sound is pretty good i guess (at least for my newbie ears) and the tag is at RM360 Btw, you can bargain at TGS... I'm sure you can get lower than the 360 offered if you show real interest. That's the style of doing business in Malaysia unfortunately... |

I tested the RM790 Squire P-bass last weekend and the sound was quite good. Action was good and I would say that the tone is more mellow and old school.
I compared that to a RM1100 Ibanez GSR205 bass (active) and wow, active basses are way louder for the same settings! More for modern stuff like rock I guess cos I couldn't get that jazzy bassy sound as I did with the Squire. I then tried a cheaper Stagg bass just to compare and I thought the RM680 tag would result in a bad instrument. Boy was I wrong! Much more versatile than the Squire and less metallic sounding than the Ibanez. Only thing was it weighs a ton and the action wasn't as good as the Squire or Ibanez. I think I'm going to try the Yamaha RBX270 one more time and then I'll make my decision but for RM680 before discount, the Stagg is beginning to look like my choice purchase for a beginner like myself! QUOTE(Bassix @ Jul 16 2008, 11:00 PM) I have a stagg fretless. Paid an equivalent of about RM750 for it. Can't really complain apart from the fact that they glued the 3-piece body senget. But soundwise it's ok. Although i did completely do away with the electronics. Now i'm running a bartolini on the bridge. But even the original PUs were decent enough to begin with. Where's the cheapest place to buy a Stagg? Of course, I don't mind spending more if the service is good... No Woh Fatt thank you very mcuh... |

QUOTE(Bassix @ Jul 17 2008, 11:36 PM) Guten Tag! Thx for the reply my friend. Actually, I tried the Yamaha RBX170 and 270 today and you know what? I actually prefer the cheaper RBX170 because it was set up better. Man, some shops really don't know how to set up their products for demo and it was disappointing that all 3 RBX270 models I tested had intonation problems. Even the sales-person didn't know how to tune properly! So, I couldn't really test the difference between the 170 and 270 but both 170 I tried (black and blue) had better set up, pretty good sound and playability. I think I'll just get a beginner bass for learning since I can't appreciate the tone, etc of a better instrument. One more round of testing with the Ibanez GSR200FM and GSR100 and I'll make my decision.... |

Tried the Yamaha RBX170 and 270 again a few days back. Very surprised the sound wasn't as good as I orginally thought.
Was blown away by the RBX370 though. Much more punch and clarity of tone. Very versatile too! Pity about the price tag... Guess it's now either the Ibanez GSR200 or GSR200FM... |
