I don't recommend RGB SSDs due to potential overheating concerns (see: HyperX Fury RGB SSD) icon_idea.gif

Also, RGB LEDs + M.2 NVME drives (which can get quite hot) = bad for thermals IMHO icon_idea.gif

Note: The PNY drive is a double sided drive (which mean the chips are on both sides of the PCB), which may not fit on certain laptops (usually those slim and light models) icon_idea.gif

In light of the ADATA 8200 Pro downgrading, what's the go-to alternative for the price vs performance sweet spot with NVME drives? I presume the HP EX950 since it has a similar controller etc to the 8200 Pro?

if 500gb ssd and i partition it to 400gb and leave 100gb unused.
the lifespan & speed can maintain longer then full partition 500g or die faster due to limited range ?

its read/write cycle.. not the space...

based on logic.. if you have e.g 100TB of data to write.. if you write to 400GB instead to 500GB.. then yes, you tend to fail faster as each sector is written more on 400GB

this is called over-provisioning. it's used to maintain speed and prolong shelf life of nand flash.

have a look at this, https://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/globa...White-paper.pdf

that's why we buy ssds that have higher capacities than expected. we will do over-provisioning of 10 to 25%, or more, depending on what they are used for.

how to play OP:

if you are working backwards you can always create the spare area partition, format it to TRIM it, then delete the partition.

yes, the key to do for OP is to leave some unallocated space, so that user have no access to it, but controller does.

this is a basic thing to do for nand-based ssds.
