Hi,

I am new to mechanical keyboard and planning to get one myself. I found one that I like (Leopold fc750r pd white) but there is no brown switch available for this model, I was wondering if red switch will be a lot different from brown for a newcomer like me? or it doesn't really matter. My usage is 50% office work 50% gaming.

technically, the question is for you to answer, not us. however, you should start somewhere, since you're new. hence i think it's ok for you to start with linear. leopold's red is not bad.

yes, i am a linear switch user hahaha

i am brown switch(cherry mx brown) and linear switch(gateron black and TTC gold pink) user.

My comment is both tactile and linear feel are different.

If you only plan to get one keyboard, better buy the switch tester to feel it before make the final purchase.

my personal picks of housings for linear switches (switch top, bottom):

1. nylon housings - cherry mx;
2. pc housings - jwk's pc housings, including those durock, and custom offers; and
3. uhmwpe housings - c3 tangerine rev 2. (the one and only, for now)

i like them because they have the characteristics that i prefer, compared to other brands:

1. relatively less stem wobbles;
2. relatively less switch top wobbles after filmed;
3. each with their sound profiles (pc is similar to uhmwpe tbh).

all the above shall be tuned before use. no stock switch can beat its tuned version. always.

note that the above are based on my preferences for linear switches. it doesn't mean others are bad.

.. and about switch films, watch this video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiecBEnHYPA

It's a tactile switch, so cherry mx browns? Never owned it myself (well, not yet, getting the one from drop) for my build

Never tried HPs, but theoretically, I'd say ergo clears. Then clears, then maybe browns.

ahh, if they're close to ergo clears.. then id be really interested

Just wondering for the ptfe/fabric tape mod at the tips of stab wires, how thick/how many rounds should I go around the stab wire or is that different from stab to stab and I have to trial and error to get it right?

not sure about the thickness, but the fabric tape that i use is the typical hansaplast that can be found everywhere. (use the sides, not the center part) you just cover a layer of it on the top part of wire tip.

Shortie cable mod. Long enough to comfortably plug in to a laptop. At the office I can plug in to the USB port on my monitor. Who needs aviators/lemos?

I prefer Gaterons anyday over Outemu browns.

Outemu spring force is too strong, so lots of the time the keys bounce back too fast, making it "stick" to your fingers when u lift it after pushing the keys down, quite unpleasant.

Gateron and Cherry Browns on the other hand do not have this problem, the lightness of gaterons also fit my preference more.

i dont understand with the mechanical key switches; cherry, gateron etc

watched the youtube once and its more related to the clicking sound difference. any other advantages with mechanical key switches apart from sound alone?

Aliexpress strikes again! Finally got my Outemu Skies and no slot clear PC tops I ordered in May!
Attached Image

This had so much potential in my head. Big tactile bump. Nylon bottom housing for the thock. SMD RGB cutout matched with a clear top for light diffusion. And you could lube and put on virgin tops that would theoretically be tight and wouldn't need filming.

Alas the reality was underwhelming. The tactile bump really is huge and feels very much like Zealios. But oh so loose! And scratchy! How the heck did they achieve that? I thought that was one of the claims of fame of Gaterons? Mildly looser tolerances to make them less scratchy relative to Cherry? Haven't tried lubing yet. Can't be bothered to clean up after. Maybe this weekend.

And the plop sound it makes when returning is a bit annoying.

Also read that for maximum thock, pairing them with the extra long Kailh Pro stems is a good idea. I did try it with a Kailh Pro Purple stem. Slightly less loose, a lot less tactile. Bottom out sound has good potential. Plop return sound still there though.

first-person experience should help, especially with a tuned build. commercial boards usually just tell a small part of story, except for some good ones.

a good (or bad) typing experience is from the result of the combination of switches and other equally important parts in a mechanical keyboard.

wow they really took a while.

i'm not familiar with tactile switches. there are tactile switch users in mymkb that can share better insights about parts.

yes for one reason in many other reason of having a mkb.

as for me, i have a mkb bcoz how it feels better than a membrane.
and also it "reacts" better in a sense u dont have to bottom out every keystroke to register a keystroke. this reason helps u both in typing and gaming.
the beauty of mkb is u can fine tune the feels of typing the way u like it. the more u fine tune it, the better it gets.
