about stabilizer band-aid mod, i use ptfe tape instead of lubed fabric band-aid, because i want a clean, not mushy, feel when i bottom out.

for wire tip band-aid mod, it's better to test the outcomes first. this is because if the tap is too thick it will cause mushiness. i am still experimenting with heat shrink mod. a shorter (5mm) tube will get rid of mushiness, but somehow ticking sound comes back. will adjust the location of shrinks on the tips to see if it helps.

glad to see more people are modifying their boards. it's really worth the efforts smile.gif

how do you secure your PTfe tape on the board?
put on double sided tape?

the one i have was from taobao, with single-sided adhesive. its thickness is 0.25mm.

edit: the item link at taobao is invalid/no more now. keywords that i used are 加厚 特氟龙高温胶带 隔热耐高温胶布 封口机真空机配件 0.25厚 (note that not all are with single-sided adhesive)

just curious, what are you guys talking about? the stabilizers thingy?

My spacebar rattles a little if i tap on both ends.... the switch for the Spacebar is okay though.

yes i use that ptfe tape to do band-aid mod for stabilizers.

stabilizer tuning is to ensure keys with stabilizers to feel like 1-u keys when typing. when you have tuned linear and tactile switches, the differences are obvious. (hence, inconsistency of typing experience)

tbh you can use anything that works for you for this, as long as it provide outcomes that you want. i did use electrical tape previously. (mainly to get rid of mushy feel)

taobao is a good source for almost everything that i use in board tuning, including hex screws, nylon washers, rubber feet, eva foams, ptfe tapes, o-rings, heat shrinks, and others.

edit: no i didn't use lube on the tapes.

i use taobao using google translate rclxms.gif

actually i`m not sure what has happen to me, ever since i manage to buy keyboard stuff from taobao,
i feel like my interest in mechanical keyboard is growing biggrin.gif
last time i felt like this was back in 2013.
then busy working.

bought keycaps, switches, stablizers and many more from there since early this year.
even manage to get Maxkey SA keycaps base set for RM 230.

my latest work is reviving old CM storm quickfire stealth - bought in 2013
desolder old chery swistches and replace with gateron brown. ( lubed, filmed)
+ lubed costar stabilizer biggrin.gif

mechanical keyboard hobby indeed cost me a lot of money.
and right now i`m thinking of buying GMK set + KBDfans KBD8x mkii devil.gif

.. my desoldering iron is working like magic once again. I think for some reason it doesn't like the KPrepublic PCBs? No problem desoldering my IKBC with either lead free solder or my generic  63/37 solder. Curiouser and curiouser.

this part actually keep me thinking for a while. is it possible that the heat conductivity is a actual problem, because pads on kprepublic pcbs are made of less optimal materials?

Got my first ever artisan keycap. KAT Atlantis Aweigh from Fraktal. B stock because of bubbles in the resin.
Attached Image

Bubbles? In an ocean themed keycap? I call that a charming detail, not a flaw!

Now just waiting for KAT Atlantis to ship in October...

this is my latest build, a 65-key 60%.

to me, for 60%, 64-key is really good enough.

niakulah I saw you bought a IKBC CD108 MX Brown , good in typing what are you modding ? Can recommend a any other brand or similar keyboard which have a same layout key as it ? For office use , mx brown with tactile , black color as basic need , do not need rgb and programmable keys since it's just for office typing.
horns Not so knowledgeable on keyboard.

How do we measure keywide and size of the keyboard ? As for the keys , a fullsize 104 keys is enough for daily use.

Current key board size not including the border from 'CTRL' key to last numberpad 'Enter' is 43cm width and 'CTRL' to 'Esc' key is 12cm.
Key cap height is 1cm.Key spacing between other key is 0.5cm.
Which MX brown tactile having this kind of wide ? i don't want to readjust and get use again the typing key wide with a new keyboard
Keyboard height including stand not over 4.5cm at Esc key and bottom the Ctrl key 1.5cm.

Also how do we measure the actuation force with tactile included ? Saw some ask to stack some coins , but which coins need to stack every key is different size and new rm0.10 cents size or older one ? since it's the only size around a single key size. How do you test it ?

When comes to budget , first is to find the same key layout slowly choose which is suitable budget.I know some have custom made keyboard but i just need for office typing use.

That keyboard suffered from death by modding. Lol

Currently on a IKBC F108. Decided I liked RGB after all. I can always switch it off if I want to. And since my keycaps are not shine through, the effect is subtle. Good enough for office use.

My current list of mods on my IKBC F108 with Cherry MX RGB Brown switches:
Spring swapped to generic 67g springs. Lubed with Krytox GPL105.
Lubed stem with Krytox GPL205G0.
Filmed with clear TX films.
Caps Lock, Num Lock and Scroll Lock have been changed to Kailh Box Navy switches.
Stab housings lubed with Krytox GPL205G0
Stab wires lubed and packed with Superlube where it clips into stab housing.
Tips of stab wires covered in plumbing PTFE tape.
Plumbing PTFE tape around stab housings to eliminate wobble when stabs are mounted on the plate.
Band aid mod on the PCB with superlube as per Taeha Types youtube tutorial has been removed due to keys sticking. Probably will redo with cloth tape and no lube when I get in new stabs.
EVA foam between PCB and plate.
EVA foam beneath PCB to fill up gaps in casing.
Spray painted top case.
Coiled the existing cable. Did a terrible job. A different cable mod in the works (waiting for crimping tool for the connector)
Also waiting for original Cherry plate mounted stabs otw.
Also waiting for KAT Atlantis keycaps group buy which are expected to start shipping in October.

i'm not good at measuring keyboards in details. i mean, it's still a keyboard. basically the main things that we should care for is the comforts when we type on them (e.g., sound. feel, typing angles), with the right keys at the right places (e.g., layout).

not everything needs precision, unless you want to design your own builds from scratch, with everything matches your own preferences. if you intended to do that, then there are a lot of variables that you need to check out:

1. key caps, there are many profiles, e.g. cherry, oem, sa, dsa, xda, mda, osa, etc. they all have their own measurements.
2. cases, they have different thickness, and typing angles.
3. etc.

normally the unit for key caps is u (e.g. 1u, 2u, 2.75u); 1u is about 19mm. it's a standard based on caps from cherry. different profiles usually mean they have different thickness, and heights.

the better way to measure actuation force is to use scientific measurement tools. the coin stacking way is a way for estimation, with the assumption that each coin weights the same.

we chose customs because there are better layouts, parts, etc. that suit our preferences. in terms of layout alone, i rather have a board with all the keys being typed on, than those with keys that i never touch once. as for your requirements, you can just get a good mkb and be done with it. you can still modify it like what niakulah did to his, to have much better typing experience.

Hi,

I am new to mechanical keyboard and planning to get one myself. I found one that I like (Leopold fc750r pd white) but there is no brown switch available for this model, I was wondering if red switch will be a lot different from brown for a newcomer like me? or it doesn't really matter. My usage is 50% office work 50% gaming.

It's a tactile switch, so cherry mx browns? Never owned it myself (well, not yet, getting the one from drop) for my build

Never tried HPs, but theoretically, I'd say ergo clears. Then clears, then maybe browns.
